Eberle does wine for the middle-class masses with elegance and strength, plus a fair bit of hard-charging grit tossed in for good measure. This is a time-tested recipe for success, whether it be on the gridiron or in the vineyard, and in way, that's what Eberle represents: a creative translation of one kind of talent and location (think: Mid-Atlantic scholar-athlete lineman) to another (UC-Davis trained pioneering 25,000 case premium winemaker). After three decades+ in the Paso Robles wine-making game, and with a highly functional underground wine cave for aging and making excellent vintages, the results are pretty impressive. Red wines that are very expressive of their specific varietals (Cabernet, Zinfandel, Syrah, GSM blends); white and rose wines that are crafted with an awareness of what makes Paso Robles and vicinity such a versatile place for experimentation; and a wealth of reserve, desert (port, muscat) and library vintages that can assume pride of place in a well-stocked wine cellar. But the masses part matters. Wine isn't (only) an idle pursuit of the well manicured rich; at the core it's salt of the earth stuff, a cyclical symphony of dust, soil, rainwater and sunshine orchestrated by a team of hard-working performers rather than the erratic act of a solitary genius. And it should be open to all comers, not something that makes you feel self-conscious. At Eberle, five pours are complimentary, from ca. fifteen wines on offer. You can get a glimpse of the special stuff for $25 (fee waived for club members), and if you want a 90+ wine that has garnered the gold medals, you'll find them among the Cabernets, Zins, and Rhone reds. Every 30 minutes, staff take visitors on tours of the underground facilities, letting you get up close and personal with the oak barrels and stainless steel fermenting tanks and bringing you down to cellar rat level. Then, you climb the stairs to a big walk-up bar and tasting room, with spacious outdoor decks overlooking well trained rows of vines where some of estate grapes grow amidst the sun and heat of Paso's eastside (other grapes are sourced from vineyards on the western rolling hills closer to the fog and cool of the ocean). It's a busy place, but the staff handle the crowds quite well, pouring, informing, smiling, clearly enjoying themselves. And it shows. Lots of contented faces, very few confused looks, and lots of satisfied sippers. On a recent summer afternoon visit, with pleasant skies and moderate midday temperatures in the 70s, I was most impressed by the 2011 reds (spice and cigar box Cotes du Robles, and a winning floral raspberry and cherry blossom Barbera) and the 2012 estate Cabernet and Syrah, from very old and dependable vineyards (Eberle estate and Steinbeck). These two years were very different in California, one very cool, the other dependably warm (to simplify things considerably), both very dry and mild winters, bad for water-intensive crops and cattle ranching, but helpful for wine makers interested in extracting lots of flavor and nuance from deeply-rooted vines cultivated for low yields and high quality fruit rather than maximum tonnage. Eberle's wines from these vintages were across the board attractive, and well priced in the $15-35 range, depending on case or wine club discounts. We left with GSM blends that were a great deal at $10 bottle, and would easily return again in fall or winter to see how the 2012s and 2013s are tasting. Wine making is an art, but it's not effortless. You need to be tough to succeed without sacrificing fingertip feel in the process. Like a versatile tight end on a well-coached football team, you need to run block when duty calls but also be able to stretch high into the air to snag balls when it's third and long, and to fight for those precious few extra yards or inches after you've landed. My sense at Eberle is that they are serious about their commitment to making fine wines for the discerning palate, but they also enjoy sharing them with others for whom drinking wine is only an occasional luxury. People in rural Pennsylvania drink and make fine wine, too, not just coastal Calfornians. It's good to keep this in mind and to embrace the wisdom of the crowd when hitting the Paso wine trail. Eberle, imo, deserves to be part of a well-rounded wine-tasting itinerary, for its accoladed heritage as well as its bright future. read more

I am an absolute fan of this Paso Robles winery. My favorites wines from Eberle are: the Full Boar Red, Côtes-du-Rôbles, Barbera, and Muscat Canelli. In fact, I special ordered the Full Boar Red twice this year. The building is quite beautiful and inviting, never ostentatious. Plus marks for their customer service and friendliness. When you get there, the bronze namesake will "greet" you at the parking lot. It is impossible to miss it. Take a tour of their caves. Complimentary wine tasting (up to five free samples). May not beat the many boutique wineries in the area, but for most palates, a favorite wine can be found among their offerings. Priced right. Very much worth your time to visit, especially if you don't know where any of the boutique winemakers are located. Easy access from the highway. Try the places across the highway, Vina Robles, Robert Hall and especially Mitchella. Great location for the occasional or casual wine drinker. read more

Extremely ticked off at this place. I took some out of town guests here to give them the experience that comes with the caves. Expecting professionalism from other vinters in the area I was quickly agitated and disappointed. I will start with the two positives. #1, bbq'd duck sausage, outstanding. #2, cave tour is cool. Beyond that I found the childishness of the staff to be beyond idiotic. Walking in the door I happened to be wearing the workshirt of a winery I am associated with. The staff at Eberle thought it would be a whole lot of fun to put their stickers all over me without even asking me. Some of these were specifically placed to cover the logos of the other winery. I understand friendly competition and bantering but this was over the top idiotic. read more

Okay, I'm not going to lie: Eberle was our last choice that day for wine tasting. My friend and I had made a list of wineries we wanted to try in Paso Robles, but one after the other, all of them were closing early on New Year's Eve! I'm talking 2:00 or 3:00. What the hell? On a tourist-packed holiday weekend? Anyways, one winery suggested we try Eberle, which is what we did. And boy were we amazed! Eberle is famous for introducing the first modern Syrah vines to the US in the 1970s. Moreover, Mr. Eberle got his PhD from UC Davis, famous for its winemaking, which is also my alma mater. Wines were excellent and prices were very reasonable. I liked the Steinbeck Syrah and the Zinfandel, but all their wines were good. Jeff, our server, was very nice and knew how to carry on a good conversation. And who could beat the fact that our entire wine flight was complementary! That's pretty rare these days. I can't wait to go back the next time in town! read more

I've been passing Eberle on Hwy 46 for as long as I could remember. It was one of the traditional Paso wineries. You could say Eberle is a Paso Pioneer! Eberle was one of the first wineries I ever visited. Their wines were varied; whites, reds, they had it all. I especially liked one of their chardonnay's from 2006/7 (?). It was toasty with just a hint of oak and vanilla; and the perfect white for the red loving wino. The tasting room is just fine by me. It's warm, inviting, and the sweet black poodles make it all the more enjoyable. Wine and dogs? Can't get much better than that! I've only had one incident that was disappointing. Our host/pourer was incredibly cold and rude. During our tasting Kevin P. mentioned something about really liking their Barbera. Our host looked up with disdain commenting that it was a peasant wine. I kid you not - a "peasant wine". What do you even say back to this? We laughed it off and to this day make jokes about that comment. It didn't ruin our experience, or change our feelings about the quality of their wine. But the few times we've been back to Paso we end up driving right by. read more

Amazing winery! They give cave tours every 1/2 hour and they were so much fun. Staff was friendly and very informative.

We decided to spend the afternoon at a winery, and chose this place. The winery has nice landscaping and beautiful views. We arrived by the tasting bar and were asked if we wanted to join the winery tour starting soon, and we said "yes." The winery tour is free, very informative and includes a tour of the winery caves, where the wine is stored. The sommelier/tour guide was very friendly and informative. After the tour, we did the FREE wine tasting of 5 wines. We all loved the Chardonnay and both of us bought a bottle of it. We then sat outside for a few minutes before heading back to the RV park. I recommend this winery to anyone visiting the area who wants to do a free tasting and wine tour, as the wine is very good. The only I did not care for was the presence of dogs in the tasting room area. The owner has his large poodle walking around, and some visitors brought 2 very large dogs in the small tasting room too. I have no problem with dogs being outside on the patio area, but inside the small tasting room made it a little too crowded with 3 large dogs. Some people do not feel comfortable around dogs, especially large ones, so be aware that there may be some present while you enter the tasting room. read more

I absolutely loved everything about this Paso Winery. We visited for zin fest and this place went above and beyond for guests. No pushy employees, everyone was truly warm and friendly and very sincere. I brought home a bottle of their cotes du robles red wine and a blanc. Excellent to have handy for company and just to enjoy a glass after work. The caves are interesting, the staff blew me away with their excellent service. Cute winery with corn hole out front. They have their "cave" tours every 30 minutes, and we were told no need for a reservation (we had a party of 11 too). Their "cave" is actually a tunnel lol and the tour lasted 15 minutes. Not much to see, but the guide gave us just enough history/facts about wine to not bore everyone. He had a good balance of facts vs. humor to keep everyone entertained. Tastings here are free and unfortunately, they were out of the Rose that my friend comes here for. On our way out from Paso Robles and back to Los Angeles, we decided to stop here for the hell of it. Let me say that this was my least favorite of any Paso Robles winery. Their reserves and basic wines were all very mediocre and it was a disappointing stop. We each bought a wine instead of paying for the wine tasting fee, but actually gave away our bottles to friend's that don't have a good wine palette (they won't know the difference). With that said, if you don't have developed taste buds and don't care, it's good grocery store wine. Sorry... Also 2 of the people at the front serving didn't really know much... they couldn't answer many of the questions and just agreed with many comments as if it was better than not knowing. read more

Good wines, but I found the staff here to be unfriendly and a bit brusque. We had two different guys helping us, and both poured the wine into our glasses and promptly left with very little discussion or explanation. Tastings were free, which was nice. I wanted to buy a bottle, but reconsidered. I'd probably get a friendlier "Thank you" buying from the cashier at Safeway or Bev Mo. read more

I have been a long time fan of Eberle Winery! From their fantastic chef dinners in the caves to their lovely patio space with views of the rolling vineyards, their friendly staff, their gorgeous poodles, to their pleasant tasting room, they have got it down in spades! But of course none of that would truly matter if they didn't also have excellent wines, which they do! Skip the whites and go straight for their bold Zinfindels, Syrahs and Cabernets. On my last visit (March 2012) my favs were the 2011 Steinbeck Vineyard Syrah and the '09 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all their tasting is complimentary! read more

We stopped here as our first stop in the day Saturday morning just as the tasting room opened. Kirk was the gentleman pouring our wines and he couldn't be more fun or knowledgeable about wine and specifically the Eberle history. The cave tour with Kirk was a nice way to see behind the curtain and took only 20 minutes. OMG!!! The VIP tasting here is hands down one of the most memorable experiences I've had in wine country anywhere at any price, and here the price is almost nothing. For $25 a person a representative takes you down to a room in their extensive cave and pours a big (and personalized) variety of their top wines from a cart, at a fancy table full of cheese. Our guide David, one of the hospitality managers, was talking a mile a minute about the history of wine, the local winemakers, the history of the winery, the region's history... it almost sounded like a memorized speech but you could ask him any question and he would fill you in at 150 words a minute. Eberle is one of the very first modern wineries (meaning, decades ago) in the region, and one of the most respected. Their wine is mid-priced for what it is, mostly in the twenty-something per bottle range, and as good as fancier wineries that charge fifty. A wide variety of estate wine, because this particular plot of land has many different soil types and elevations. The proprietor, an early graduate of UC Davis' wine program, set out to find the ultimate place to grow grapes and, bypassing Napa and Sonoma, settled here as the perfect climate and soil, back at a time when you could buy and plant a hundred acres of anything for nothing. So here it is. The place is beyond dog friendly, by the way. The owner's (full size) winery poodles roam the property. There are commemorative plaques about former poodles, poodles roaming the grounds, statues of poodles. If you bring a dog, they won't just tolerate your dog, they'll pet it and tell you what a great dog it is, and they'll get to play with the poodles and come into the cave with you. Anyway, if you want the VIP treatment you have to book in advance. Just do it. The people on the normal cave tour will look and point at you and your dog, and wonder if you're a Hollywood star or a tech billionaire. In my neck of the woods, this kind of personal treatment would cost $100 or more a person, or else you'd have to know somebody, and it still wouldn't be this sweet. read more

This was our first stop for our Paso Robles vacation. The tasting was free and all the wines we had were pretty good. We pre-ordered a picnic lunch since we wanted a guaranteed table, and didn't want to deal with bringing food in...it seemed a bit pricey from the website, but it actually came with A LOT of food. For our one order (which we split), we had 2 salads, a sandwich, an apple, a brownie, and a small bottle for pellegrino. It was definitely enough for two. We brought a couple cheeses to supplement the lunch, but we didn't need it. I pretty much liked almost all the wines we tasted, and they even gave us a free glass to have with our picnic! We wound up taking home a bottle of their full boar red, cotes du robles, and the estate cab. I highly recommend this winery as a stop on your wine-tasting experience in Paso Robles. read more

First time at a winery in Paso Robles and had an amazing experience doing the Cave Tour. It's a private/intimate enough for two but fun enough for a group. It's romantic and truly magnificent. I was immediately struck when I entered Eberle by the fact they charged no tasting. You read that correctly, No Tasting Fee! Paso Robles is thriving in the wine industry, and for a winery to be humble enough to not charge you to try their product is refreshing. It should be noted, however, that there is a tasting few applied if one were to try the reserve wines. My wife and I enjoyed a homey feel at this tasting. Paula served us and spoke as if we had been old friends. We laughed and joked and sipped wine for the better part of an hour. To top it off, Paula even took us on a tour of the cellar caves. Talk about cool! The wines were about what you would expect for East Side Paso. Not as deep as what can be found in other areas of town, but very well made. To be blunt, we bought a mixed case and have been happy with our treats. read more

This is a great winery in Paso Robles. I came here without knowing much about the region and am so glad we stopped here. My friend made reservations for a VIP wine cave tour so we got to hear about the history of the winery as well as do the wine tasting downstairs in the wine cave. It was an amazing experience. We had a cheese plate with the wine that was perfect. My favorite cheese served was a raspberry Gouda. Yum! It's not a wine and cheese pairing though. I left with a bottle of the Sangiovese! It was a real treat. Our personal wine person (I'm no expert on wine and don't know the technical terms) was super friendly and easy to talk to. We had a great time with her. She also told us that there are a lot of proposals downstairs in the wine cave though....so there's an idea! There's a great outside area for picnicking with a magnificent view of the estate vineyards. Very romantic. Definitely stop by because it's totally worth it. You think I LIKE drinking that much wine and then petting a bunch of dogs while staring at a gorgeous view??? I'm pretty sure I made a mockery of myself in a cave. If you arrive early in the day the staff is likely to be more enthusiastic about the tour than the end of the day. Imagine repeating yourself for eight hours?! The deck is a great place to have your picnic lunch.... A warning about the Eberle's cat: he is super friendly, will jump in your lap, and will beg for food. Five stars for: service, aesthetics, and wine. We happened to visit when Eberle was hosting a celebratory weekend for winning a prestigious wine award. Despite the fact that the small tasting room was super packed, we were still given individual attention and never felt like we had to flag someone down. Wines were also 20% off! I really enjoyed the reds here - and even the rosé, which did not taste like your typical sparkling fruity wine. The view is beautiful. I prefer tasting rooms where I can see the grapes being grown :) we were also invited on a (free!!) tour of the cellar and shown how the grapes were crushed and barreled. Really cool!
