I went to see Ed based upon the many favorable reviews I've seen on the internet. I was not disappointed. Ed is "old school". By that, I mean that he values old school values such as integrity, service, character, kindness, and the ability to listen. I went in to ask about a 45 year old AMF ball that I had drilled for me when I was in college. My fingers have since gotten a bit "fat" and I needed an adjustment. I thought Ed might get me to buy a new ball but no. Ed said he just wanted me to get bowling again and that it was a relatively simple matter to widen the existing holes. I really appreciated that! I was looking for mucho bucks to be spent but he charged me a very nominal amount to widen the three holes. And, he promised to have it done in a few days! When I asked about a particular new ball brand, Ed gave me the rundown on why it was a good ball and how he could order the proper specs for me. I was impressed (being a retired engineer) and this guy has me sold. I heard that he might be retiring from another post. I hope he goes on as long as he wishes and cares to, he's a precious resource in the community of bowlers. He will be getting more business from me in the near future! Ed's shop is located inside the AMF on Baldwin Ave. My husband and I each got a "bowler's package" from Ed about a month ago. You get a bag, shoes, and a ball that is custom drilled to your hand with initials engraving all for $130. Ed was super helpful throughout the whole process and was patient in answering any questions we had. He never once tried to upsell us, even though my husband of his own accord decided to upgrade to the next level ball. I took a hiatus from bowling for about four years after my long time house closed down. I wasn't sure if I wanted to get back into it, but my brother gave me a gift certificate for a new bowling ball last Christmas. The only problem: the pro shop where it came from was about 25 miles away at a house I haven't been to in about 30 years. It sat on my desk for about eight months. Winter leagues were getting ready to start, so I figured I'd take a trip, get a ball, and find a league for exercise, if nothing else. It had been at least 15 years since I'd been ball shopping, so I had no idea what was available. Fortunately, I caught him at a slow time, because we had time to talk...quite a bit of time. I told Ed about my situation and what kind of reaction I was looking for. He had a few recommendations and we decided on a ball. It's been less than two months, and I can honestly say I've NEVER had a ball fit as well as this one (and the two I bought subsequently) does. I am already over my average from four years ago, and I have never felt so comfortable and confident rolling a ball since I started bowling 37 years ago. I've dealt with a number of pro shop professionals over the years, and they've all been good. Ed, however, is different. Ed doesn't just talk...Ed listens. Ed doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions. Ed engages you in conversation to find out what you're looking for so he can give you what you want. Ed is also knowledgeable enough to recognize that if what you want doesn't make sense, he'll tell you why it doesn't and suggest something different. If you still want it, he'll do it. As your history increases with Ed, he gets to know you and almost anticipate your needs. (I've watched him with some of his customers while waiting for my turn.) Ed gets busy, which is not a bad thing. He's busy because he's that good. If you get the opportunity to catch him with no customers waiting, you have truly been given a gift. Do not waste it. Talk to the man. Learn from the man. If there are customers waiting, pull up a chair as close to the counter as you can, watch, and listen. I was bowling with members from my church. I met Ed inside his shop to get some pointers about a hand brace. Ed hooked me cause we have a common interest in racing and winning. After an 30 minute conversation with Ed he had me bowing correctly knocking down pins against my church members. I purchased a ball from his shop that will keep me in the game and other items to get me going. I appreciate it that, he was not just selling me a ball so that I could return, but he made a friend. GREAT SERVICE! I am only 18 but come here often because Ed treats me with the utmost respect, unlike many other pro shop operators who look down upon the younger bowlers who go into their shops. He really knows his stuff and is as helpful as can be. He gives you exactly what you need based on your skill level and really urges you to buy only what you NEED not what's the most expensive. Even though if you're set on buying a certain ball or shoes he will make sure you get what you want as well. Once you buy a ball from here many of the little ball care services that he has to offer are free of charge. Ed is very friendly with all of his customers and gets to know everyone on a first name basis. His shop may not have the long racks of bowling balls many stores have, but he has a catalog and will order and drill any ball of your choosing for you. Service is VERY quick as well. You can take a ball there to be drilled and have it done by the next afternoon, or order a ball and have it drilled and ready in just a few days. I have known Ed for over a dozen years and he is not only very knowledgable about the sport and drilling, but has a very high ethic. I see comments about him having a peculiar personality, but what may be viewed as peculiar, is a man who has a passion for doing the right thing for his customers. Ed Williamson is very attentive and very easy going. I went in with my cracked ball and he was able to map out my bowl style and oil patterns from that ball first. Ed then spent some time and helped me pick out my new ball online. Everything was smooth from start to finish. We found Ed by all the positive reviews on yelp. We were looking for a pro shop to drill our balls. We live in east la and Ed's worth the drive. My wife and I are new to bowling and he never once made us feel uncomfortable. He is very knowledgeable and gets to the point. He makes you feel very relaxed and has a teachers persona to him. I've been going to Ed for years, even when he used to be at columbia bowl. Ed is a master when it comes to drilling bowling balls. I've NEVER had a blister or any other issue with my several bowling balls he's drilled for me. Fits like a glove.
