Goodness... This post makes me so sad because I had "HIGH Hopes" when I brought my Chef friend here yesterday for some good food! She's German, so the stakes were up, and then they were down... I bragged to her about how awesome the food && service was from the two times I dined here, in the last 3 months. I ordered the beef stroganoff... it was grizzly and made me sick. When I brought it to the attention of our server, she had mentioned to me that somebody else didn't like it either! Then she came back with me with a question, "how about a 20 % discount on your meal?" Um NO... My guest and I were shocked that she didn't "comp" the meal... We ordered Mimosas, our server, tipped the entire try of drinks (for 4 tables) so we had to wait longer...luckily, the second time around they were really good. Then I went to the Restroom...OY...it was like someone peed everywhere! I had to hold my breath! I remember when I first ate here, she told me they had changed ownership. Yeah, like overnight, everything was very bad && sad. Even the website doesn't work when you look it up. I'm not coming g back. RIP. read more

The best I can say is "Meh" It wasn't awful...Or Meh it wasn't great... The food was ok nothing to write home about and at the same time good enough to keep you eating not just push it away and stop for a fast food burger on your way home... They do have an impressive beer menu if you like German beers ... The place is worn and very outdated but clean and comfortable... Service was the stand out quality of the place we had a great server fast, friendly and very attentive.. I was in Germany in the mid 80's and this place felt kinda like the small family eatery's that the locals would go to ... The Food is absolutely wonderful. Reminded me of my Great-Grandma's cooking paired with an amazing beer selection! First time here so I did my pre-work and scoured these Yelp pics and reviews. We came in for the giant Bavarian pretzel with the beer cheese. So hot and fresh, nom nom nom. Edelweiss has a great selection of beers, but they're the only reason I'd come back. When we arrived, they said they would need a minute to clear a table outside. Ten minutes later we walk out back to numerous empty tables; some clean while most were still covered with dirty dishes. Mind you, we didn't see a single person leave since we had gotten there. We ordered our beers and some pretzel bites. Beers came but pretzel bites didn't, so we asked our server if we could order another round of beer and dinner. We also asked if our pretzel bites were ready and he said he would check. Came back with our beers but didn't say anything about the bites, so we asked again and he said he would check. Rather than checking he rounds on other tables, goes back inside, and doesn't come out until 10 minutes later with the bites and our food; both of which were cold at this point. Food probably would've been a lot better had it not been cold. However, 17 bucks for a bowl of French fries and sausages, that tasted like plain hot dog meat, isn't worth the price. We found this lovely restaurant one Friday while running errands. The food is so good, and it harkens back to my many visits to Germany. It is not the easiest feat to find authentic German and Hungarian cuisine in AZ (please note that I live in Tucson, where we have no German restaurants). The ambiance is pleasant, and the server was attentive. I enjoyed a schnitzel while my husband had sausage. And, it was delicious!!!! The mushroom sauce for the schnitzel was served on the side -- I guess some diners have complained about having the sauce on the meat, which is actually a little sad -- it is supposed to be on the meat!!! No complaints from me though. The potatoes were thinly sliced and tasty. The cucumber salad on the side was refreshing. For dessert, we had the Black Forest cake, which was sublime! As it is winter, we did not opt for the Biergarten, but it looks like a marvelous place to enjoy when the weather is warmer. To their credit, portions are good which makes the pricing a bit more tolerable. The cabbage and sauerkraut were very tasty, as was the tender Jager schnitzel. Although I chose the sausage that promised to be the most flavorful, it was extremely mild (not what I was hoping for). This place could very easily structure the menu differently and, with a few simple adjustments, have much more satisfying offerings. The facility is "rustic", and by that I mean old and grungy. The parking lot is off-putting and serves as a reminder to lock your car. There are not a lot of German restaurants around so this will do in a pinch but mostly cuz there isn't another choice. read more

We LOVE good German food and we're so excited to try this spot when we were in Phoenix recently. We were sorely disappointed. The pretzel nubs were very good, but....that was it. I had order weiner schnitzel, spaetzle and red cabbage. The spaetzle was cold, the schnitzel was luke warm and the breading completely fell off as soon as my fork touched it. My husband had a mixed meat stew ......also on cold spaetzle. The gravy was very salty. It was a very disappointing visit. I doubt we will return. Great food and live entertainment makes for a wonderful evening out! We especially enjoyed the jagerschnitzel and pretzel.

I took two coworkers to Edelweiss that have never had German food before. I helped them order based on their taste preferences. Overall, we all enjoyed. As always, I ate everything on my plate which nearly put me into a food coma due to the large serving portions. We started with the large pretzel and beer cheese. Surprisingly, the pretzel was doughy, hot and tasted homemade. It was the perfect start. My go to is the Weinersnitzel mit spatzel and cucumber salad, and I ordered a side of sauerkraut and red cabbage and extra lemons because I believe this to be what makes for the perfect Weinersnitzel bite. I also ordered a large side of German fried potatoes to share with the table. This was my only disappointment. German fried potatoes preferred to have been crisp and crunchy; instead, these were tender with a light charge. Again my only disappointment; oh and the water tasted like it was filtered straight from a mud puddle. Ick! So I got some ice teas and a Dunkle beer to cleanse the pallet. One coworker ordered the same meal and another ordered the Chicken Paprikash mit spatzel. He finished so he must have also enjoyed; though a man of few words. Service was excellent and the team did a good job of ensuring apparent sanitation before we were seated and multiple hand sanitizer bottles around to help guests feel safe. Well done! I've only been here once, but the experience has lingered in my mind. I loved hanging out on the patio, but there was a very very loud, crude, group that made it difficult to converse, and frankly, I couldn't believe that they weren't kicked out-they were very far over the line. This was a hard one for me because I had such a good experience the first time and I was proud that I discovered this place for my friends to try, but I have to tell it like it is! I've been here twice now. The first time was a solid four star experience. Five of us dined here. All of my friends loved it here with the authentic German/Hungarian vibe of the place. I arrived early the first time and ordered a nice German Weihenstephaner beer and pretzel bites with beer cheese and mustard to dip them in. My friends arrived about an hour later. We were seated at a nice round table. We ordered beer and iced teas. After we looked over the menus, we ordered, Jagerschnitzels, German sausages, and Apple Strudel. Everything was delicious from the gravy on the schnitzels to the spatzel. The schnitzels were lightly breaded and fried perfectly. Everyone loved the apple strudel! The second time we dined here just a few days ago; there were nine of us. One of my friends who dined with us the first time, brought his father who was stationed in Germany. We were seated at a large round table and brought water. A few of us ordered beer with shots of apfelkorn an apple liquor traditionally served with beer in Germany. I had a Bitberger Pilsner. After browsing the menu, we started with two large pretzels with beer cheese. We also ordered Pogi, (Hungarian surf cakes with cranberry sauce). Everyone loved the Pogi. The pretzels were also a hit. I decided to try something different for my main course. I ordered sauerbraten and my wife ordered Budapest salad. Others ordered jagerschnitzels. The saurerbraten looked appealing when delivered. But I was in for a disappointment. The meat was so so dry! I tried eating each bite with a much gravy as I could, but the dryness of the meat was just too overwhelming. Not only that, but the spatzel had a lot of hard pieces. I experienced hard pieces with every forkful. My friend who brought his father experienced the same thing. He said his schnitzel was also dry. I did complain and I was comped an apple strudel. We ordered three apple strudels. They were not the same. they seemed just a little undercooked. I don't know what happened that night, but it did not come close to the awesome experience we had approximately a month earlier. Consistency is so important. Its what keeps your patrons coming back. I hope they figure out what went wrong because I want to try their currywurst. Most of our group liked their meals, so that will keep their four star rating from me. read more

We were given a gift card for this restaurant and we were saving it for an occasion to take my daughter and her husband out and with our busy schedules the opportunity finally came around. We all ordered a meal and beverage and then when the check came we presented our Edelweiss gift card and the waitress told us that they couldn't honor the card because the restaurant was bought by a new owner! The restaurant is still Edelweiss so one would think if you take over the same restaurant, with the same name you would honor that card. It's just good business. I could see if it was The Wagon Yard still but it's the SAME named restaurant on the gift card. We are retirees on a limited income so needless to say it was a shock. This building has been around for years! It could use a major renovation. Curb appeal is seriously lacking, but I like holes in the wall. What I don't like is walking in and it smells musty and you can see the dirt build up. We chose to sit outside due to the smell and honestly the weather was perfect. We were only stopping by to check it out with the idea to just have a couple beers and an appetizer. We were greeted right away and sat outside with menus. We asked some questions and the server was knowledgeable. We decided on the GIANT pretzel and paid extra for beer cheese. The pretzel was actually giant - one of the biggest we have seen. It just wasn't very good - maybe frozen previously? Highly doubtful the beer cheese is made in house. It was served in a plastic container and we saw one in the parking lot that had a label on it. It was not good either. So, what was good? The service was good. The beer was good. The dog and Pig (yes pig) that also reside in the outside seating area were good. Well, the pig had no desire to acknowledge me, but the dog hung out. :) While I would be back for beer - I am just not sure I am up for the food challenge. read more

My friends were in town visiting from Ohio and my one friend was really craving a good soft pretzel. I told her I'd do some research and take her somewhere the following day. My boyfriend and I both did some work on Yelp and figured a German place would have a good pretzel, right?! I am actually from Ohio and am a mega-fan of Schmidts (it's a German restaurant in Columbus that everyone knows and it's been around for over 150 years. It's awesome!). So I was excited to see a German restaurant the PHX area. We went here on a Saturday afternoon around 1p. It was a gorgeous day in January so we sat outside. The place wasn't busy at all. They have a massive patio, but there were only about 4 tables full. I loved that they have the Schofferhofer beers here. I fell in love with the Grapefruit one when I had it at the Germany Pavilion at Epcot. Bonus that they have additional flavors here! I got the pomegranate one and it was fantastic! We ordered the giant soft pretzel (obviously), the fried cauliflower, and Opa's favorite (basically fried gouda). We really enjoyed all of our snacks and my friend was very impressed with the pretzel. I am SOOOO bummed though because after looking at this place on Yelp, I had been salivating over the Apple Strudel. I wanted to try it so bad! But once we were there, it TOTALLY escaped my mind. So best believe I will be back so I can test that out. Only reason they lose a star is because the service was not attentive. They had one waiter for the patio and we had to flag him down quite a few times. Also, my friend had a fly fly into her beer before she even took a sip. She told the waiter and he basically said that because we chose to sit on the patio, there is nothing he can do and she'd have to pay for another one. I get what he's saying (to an extent). I just felt bad because she hadn't even taken a sip of it yet and it was immediately after he placed it down and walked away from the table. Having lived in The Black Forrest region of Germany I think I would Recommend this place for the general public. Walking in the atmospheres Is very pleasant. My Frau ordered the Jaegger (hunter) schnitzel which was Done decently and crisp. It was outstanding. My wife being European and Having eaten them since child hood agreed. I had the Hungarian schnitzel Was pleased with that. The service was awesome. My only thing I didn't Like was the spaetze (egg noodles) were so so. In Germany many gesthauses boil their noodles then soak them in butter, and season them. Every German restaurant I have been to here in the states does it the same. Boil then serve. It would be equivalent of ordering Mexican food in let's say Maine and expect it to taste the same as here in Phoenix. read more

The beer is phenomenal. The atmosphere is lovely. Here on a Saturday night, the accordion player is a great touch. If I'm here for beer and atmosphere, this is a solid venue. The food here is dreadful. Slimy cabbage, tasteless schnitzel, cucumbers in water. Service was alright. No waters with the meal. No condiments. No dessert. We have been to Germany multiple times and this is about as authentic as Taco Bell is for Mexican food. We have eaten at many German restaurants in the US and this is in the bottom 3. read more

The fried potatoes were okay, but would have been better with more flavor. We started with pretzel bites with beer cheese, which was very good. The sauce that accompanied my Huhner Schnitzel was good but a little bland. Cute atmosphere, with a clear German theme and a fun outdoor patio designed like a German biergarten. We were there on a Friday night and really enjoyed the accordion player who was playing polkas and other tunes (and the volume was nice, we could hear the music but were still able to talk comfortably)!
