Hostage is in rough shape. Several puzzles were either held together by clear or duct tape, if working at all. The GM gave less than ideal hints, and even admitted to not hearing players very well. We could hear our GM talking about us throughout the game due to thin walls, and it did not add to the experience. Tech wasn't working, the set was in poor condition, and the puzzle flow was confusing at best. I don't know if there was an adult on site at any point during our game. For $100, I expected more. Even with how much I've heard about their other game, Nursery, I doubt I will return due to the lackluster first experience. read more

I absolutely loved this escape room! My group and I did the hostage escape. The employees put a huge emphasis on the experience of your escape room from start to finish. It was unlike other escape rooms I've been to because they gave hints that made sense, and were always involved in the process of our escape. I would highly recommend this escape room over others because they didn't have random hints that lead to dead ends. Just finished playing Nursery (Beta Version) tonight. Let me begin this review with a quote from the employee at the end of the game, "this game best shines after you already know the game flow and come back to do it a second time". I am sorry but at a price tag of $50 per person, I can't justify the cost to return. I appreciate the replayability aspect, because that's something you don't find in most rooms. They are mostly one and done. I've been looking for one that I can play multiple times. However, this is one of the highest prices rooms. With its current stage, I don't think it's worth another $50. I have done many escape rooms all across the country and unfortunately this is the only escape room that I wanted to end early. I did not feel comfortable in the room and as I've stated in a previous review of 'Hostage', I don't believe this company keeps their customers safety a priority. In every game that I have ever done, there is always a briefing on how to get out of the room in case of an emergency. Usually the door you entered from is actually unlocked, but some rooms the door needs to be locked to keep the immersion. In those types of rooms, there is always an emergency release just in case you need to leave. Not in the nursery. You are held captive at the Game Masters will, not your own. This really made me feel uncomfortable and eventually led me to giving up because it bothered me so much. I addressed this with the staff at the end, and they said that in the event of an emergency the entrance door would have unlocked. They have manual overrides in the control room to unlock the door. However, this still does not address my concern. At anytime, an individual should be able to leave the space if they wish. There is no place that you should ever be held captive unless you are in actual prison. I really don't think there current system is legal or up to code. As for the room itself: Trust the warnings!! This is a very scary experience with live actors and you will be separated from your group at times. This is not like any other escape room and I would not recommend it for beginners. This is more of a horror experience than an escape room. I appreciated this new type of experience but wished the game flowed better. In a dark and foggy experience like this, you need to have extremely clear game flow. I would suggest that these game designers visit the Apartment Next Door by Omescape to get some ideas on how clear game flow works in dark. The objectives were unclear and made complicated due to the room being very difficult to navigate. When we did have an objective, it was difficult to achieve due to the fog, very low lighting and compounded with the fact that you need to avoid the 'ghosts'. There are too many factors that make this room difficult just for the sake of it being difficult, not because the puzzles were difficult. The Pros: Good props, well built, great immersion, and great overall idea. Just poorly executed. This room has been in Beta testing for about 4 months now. I've looked at other reviews of Nursery and they are mostly negative. As an escape game enthusiast , I would give 3 recommendations to the business owners to make the Nursery better. 1.) Make it clear to customers that their safety is a top priority of the company and that there is always a way to exit the room in case of an emergency. This needs to be a clear message for people to feel comfortable playing the game. 2.) Improve game flow and make puzzles feel less like "trial & error". This includes having clear objectives. An ambiguous game flow works in a traditional escape room, but this experience should have very clear game flow to improve the experience. You need to always have a clear understanding of what to do next in this type of experience. 3.) If you are going to have locks in a dark room, provide some light source that does not diminish the sanity level. (Maybe a special color flashlight that the ghost cannot see). read more

Minh is by far the best host I have ever had at any escape room. I have been to Escape rooms in SF,LA, Irvine, and none of them compare to the hosting quality of this one. We had a fantastic time in the BOX room. The experience was much different compared to the many other escape rooms we've been in since many of the tasks require intervention with the game master. The experience was much more interactive this way. Marissa was a great game master! She answered all of our questions we had prior and made sure we were having a great time. She made sure we had appropriate pacing to try and finish on time since we got distracted with the other goodies within the room. We couldn't have asked for a better game master! read more

Shoutout to Hannah and Caitlin who were our game masters, we had a wonderful experience doing 'Hostage'. It is truly not for the faint-hearted and provides an experience beyond just solving puzzles. We ended up going back for the Battle of Xu'qua the very next weekend and had an absolutely great time as well with the same game masters. I thought that this escape room was excellent. They put so much effort into making it interactive in a non-traditional way (more tactile, not completely visual). I would say this is unlike most escape rooms in terms of the details in the ambience. We did the horror themed one and it was genuinely scary at several moments. This escape room let us schedule a 7th person. They warned us that it wouldn't be as good with a 7th but I was so grateful that I didn't have to leave anyone out. Thank you for doing that! read more

Jonathan and Tim were so awesome! My group and I went for the "Hostage" experience for one of my cousin's bachelorette activities and it was so fun! Props to Jonathan for being a great host and Tim was funny and amazing as our game master! I've gone to escape rooms before, but this is by far the most fun I've ever had! It was scary, it makes you think, and it's consistent. They have another scary room "Nursery" which I would love to do next and there was also a family friendly one that I want to bring my kids to. Jonathan's says it's a mix of Harry Potter and Dungeons and Dragons I believe, so I really want to bring my kids to that. Bonus is that everyone who works here will have their education paid for! I am such an advocate for education so I really love that about Edscapade! Very fun and worth it! Will be coming back again soon! read more

I had a visit today for The Hostage room, it was super cool and a little scary. Nothing much really happened during the game scene. It's just us trying to solve the puzzle in the dark knowing someone is coming if we dont make it on time. A big shout out to our host, Jenny Nguyen, she was super nice and care. For context, I've done 40-50 escape rooms. My cousin and I completed the B.o.X. room (castle/fantasy theme). Theme: I have mixed feeling about this area. There were some features that fix with the theme and I've never seen in other rooms, but there were other features that stuck out like a sore thumb to the point I couldn't figure out the puzzle because it was so out of place. The decorations were immersive. Difficulty: Most of the puzzles made sense, but we were stuck on some that just didn't make any sense. Miscellany: The room just didn't seem well built. Many of the triggers had to be manually tripped by the GM. One door didn't open after we triggered it because we had placed a heavy item on top of the door. It just didn't seem streamlined. If you're a serious escape room enthusiast, I don't think you'll like the room. If you're looking for an immersive experience that's fun but not very logical, you might enjoy it. read more

My boyfriend and I played Hostage today, and it was so much fun! Our game master and host was Quang, and he was great and stayed in character the whole time. My boyfriend and I are quite new to escape rooms (we've only played one before). We were lost most of the time, but Quang was AMAZING at guiding us through whilst staying in character and keeping the experience fun! The puzzles were also very unique and challenging, and there were a lot to go through, so I would say having a big group of players would be helpful. We didn't get to escape, but we were able to get to the last puzzle (with a lot of help!) The set of the room itself is also very immersive, and I was scared nearly all of the time. Hostage is definitely not a room for the light-hearted! :-) Overall, 10/10, and I can't wait to try their other rooms! read more

Escapade is insanely fun! 'Hostages' is a must-try. While the others are easier, this one is the hardest designed escape room I've ever been to! It takes time and I recommend going in a group of at least 4. The hosts are brilliant! We were given a set of very understandable instructions in the beginning. The set up was not only extra safe but full of thrill. We had a good rush of adrenaline by the end of it and enjoyed every minute of the hour. I must say it was a good idea to go with my husband.
