Came here for brunch this morning with out of town family friends. I have lived in the area and have only stepped foot in here with a friend so she could get a coffee. I was so happy we were able to get a table this morning. I got the egg white with cheese, avocado and tomatoes wrap. It was tasty. I also got an iced latte which was pretty to me. My family friends really enjoyed their meal and the atmosphere and feel of the place. I deff recommend this place to out of towners and of course to locals. read more

Food was great and it is never too busy. However after 3 times there, I didn't return after seeing mice scurry around the dining area.

I went here with my mother-in-law for the first time today for brunch and we both enjoyed our meals. She ordered a portobello mushroom burger with fries, which I tried and loved. The seasoning was delicious, the buns done just right and the fries stayed crispy even when it was no longer hot. I ordered a simple avocado toast with a sunny side up egg and at was also tasty! I liked the unassuming attitude of the restaurant, too! All around great experience. We will be coming back! read more

Tasty food in a nice restaurant. Very clean and quaint inside. Also outdoor seating is available. The challah French toast was nicely cooked. Rich and eggy just the way it should be. The shashuka was flavorful and a slight hint of spicy flavor. The eggs were a little over cooked for me. The shashuka also came with a side of humus and whole wheat pita. The smoked fish platter was a nice size portion of smoke white fish salad, smoked baked salmon salad, cream cheese, lox, and a bagel. Capers, onions and sliced green olives we also on the plate. Great smoothies, juices, and salads! The smoothie was $7. I like their Greek salad too. Wish they had gluten free bread options, but overall a nice cafe. Most of the restaurant has the uncomfortable rounded metal black chairs that dig into your hips if you happen to have hips. I noticed a few comfy chairs on the upper level. Hope they change all of the chairs soon. Will come more often if they do. read more

Great addition to the UES! Good size cafe with an open layout with ample outdoor seating! Stop by for a coffee, quick lunch, or sit for a while and work. The iced coffee ($3.5) and chai lattes ($5) are amazing! We ordered the Smoked Fish Platter ($16.95) and the Grilled Fish Sandwich ($13.95). Both were great and well-priced! This is my go-to restaurant when I come to NYC to visit family as it is close to my hotel. The ambiance is quaint with outdoor seating. The service was quick and welcoming. The vegetarian shawarma platter with seitan, labneh, Israeli salad and much more is fantastic. The challah French toast with fresh strawberries, blueberries and bananas is wonderful and very filling. The portions are large and very reasonably priced. Note: this is a Kosher Israeli restaurant, so no meat will be served with dairy on the menu. Highly recommend. read more

Love the new location! We came for a late lunch and we were very happy with our meal. The inside of the restaurant doesn't appear to have a/c or it wasn't on. We opted to sit outside. Effy's Cafe is over the top in most things. Their York Ave. location is finally opened. Me and my husband lived around here and we always come to west side location for years. They consistently offer affordable, scrumptious and reasonable price on the menu. I personally love the Challah french toast, Falafel platter and Shakshuka. I see a lot of very good reviews for this "bistro". I wish I could give them one-but I can't. In fact, I'm taking the time to write a review because of the lousy experience I and my three guests had. My biggest complaint is we all got lukewarm food. The place wasn't THAT busy but yes, the tables were mostly full. Still I expect a hot, at least a very warm plate. Two orders of pancakes were not even warml. I guess the waited until my other guest's fish and chips was ready to bring the food. My daughter's stew type dish was also just warm and she didn't end up eating much of it as it was very bland and tasteless. The service was lousy. We were very near the kitchen so they could see us but no one checked on us. We got water when we sat down but never a refill. When the food arrived, we still didn't have silverware and it was very frustrating to see the waitress with our silverware, shooting the breeze with another waitperson while we were waiting to eat. Nobody came by to ask how the food was or if we needed everything. Had they, I would have asked them to warm it all up but no, they just brought the check. Conclusion- it was a lousy afternoon meal for us all. I'd say, if you want to support this business, come for coffee or tea but don't order anything to eat! read more

I'm so happy we spotted this place during a Saturday morning stroll. Effy's Cafe has lots of things going for it. 1. Prices are great! The bill for two entrees and two drinks was $35 and they offer a 10% discount if you pay with cash. 2. The food is fresh and delicious. My challah French toast was covered in a generous portions of fresh berries and banana. Not a mushy or frozen & thawed piece of fruit in the bunch. Plus with 3 huge pieces of French toast I was able to save half of this for breakfast the next day. 3. The selection of dishes. We went for an early brunch and stuck with breakfast dishes but I can't wait to go back for lunch and dinner. They have lots of vegan and vegetarian options as well as pescatarian but everything sounds so delicious it's not a place where you will miss having (red) meat. Plus, they have fried pickles on the menu so I need to go back and try those! I'm mad. I've lived 4 blocks away from this restaurant for 2 years and I only just tried it recently. It's SO GOOD. I originally didn't try it because I don't consider myself a huge fan of Mediterranean but they have something for everyone. After I tried it for the first time I have been back 4 times within the span of a week. I had been looking for a quality grilled cheese in the area and had been SO disappointed until Effy's. They make the most delicious mozzarella tomato pesto. Perfect. I've also ordered the vegan shawarma and loved it. Also got the Mac and cheese in the restaurant. PERFECT. Every time I go in there the workers are so nice and efficient. The digs are super simple, clean and inviting. I'm usually not this impressed with places. It almost feels too good to be true. The waiters are helpful, kindly taking our order, even though they mentioned we were supposed to go inside and check-in first. It is kosher so because they serve dairy, they don't have meats, but they do have fish so there are plenty of ways to get protein. The food is fresh and tasty. Unbelievable. Me and my partner sat down to eat and dine in for some breakfast. After sitting and waiting for over thirty minutes for French toast and pancakes, we see people order after us and still get their orders before us. Okay we understand it can get busy sometimes. But for a group of 10+ to walk in and the waiter to ask us to move to accommodate people that just walked in when we were already sitting in a corner because the other two tables were filthy is hilarious. We were already trying to take less space to help blend in since we obviously stood out. We asked to sit in the corner to ease the waiters job because of the dirty tables that we were told to sit at by the waiter. Obviously we were fine when we asked the waiter if we could sit by the corner ... so why would you ask us if we were "comfortable" when the group of people asked the same waiter if we could move somewhere else to accommodate them knowing we asked to sit there to begin with? What a way to start the New Year. Do not Recommend. Waste of time. read more
