I was meeting a friend to chat up on things so we decided to try this Egg Harbor Cafe location. We didn't have to wait long for a table. We timed it perfectly. If you do have to wait, they have fresh coffee available for you. There is room inside or outside, depending on the weather, to rest your hungry feet. I had a very hard time deciding what to order. Too many lovely choices. Guess I have to go back with the husband. ;) They have lots of healthy options as well. Not the usual oatmeal. I ended up trying the Georgia's Grits. It was unique for this area and had a little bit of everything. Just was I was looking for. A good choice. However, there a few others I still want to try. One thing I also liked is that stated on the menu it says you can add any style eggs and breakfast meat to a pancake or French toast choice. Cool! They have an interesting process for serving guests. My husband and mother-in-law said the salmon Benedict was phenomenal. The only complaint they had was that they wished they had more sauce for the potatoes. This is an impromptu review, but I'll definitely have to revisit here. I took my mom out here since we wanted pancakes. Some things to note: Coffee served here is Intelligentsia; that is, it's high quality and tasty. Served in an insulated carafe with mugs, there's less waving down the staff for a refill, which is considerate and also efficient. I ordered Swedish style pancakes as a combo with eggs and bacon. Perfectly cooked crepes, with good bounce and excellent texture, were brought out alongside lingonberry jam and similarly infused butter. The eggs were ordered over easy (and they were perfectly so), the bacon perfectly crisped and drained. Mom ordered blueberry pancakes... three giant 8-10 inch fluffly discs came out. I had to help her finish them; also delicious, fresh blueberries alongside enough food to easily feed two. Service was very prompt, professional and friendly. No needlessly pestering people to check up. The place is cozy and not too loud despite being fairly busy for Monday brunch service (11 am). Excellent value as well, and a large menu that isn't overwhelming. Only small gripe is that the water on the table pitchers tasted strongly of tap; I'm just picky with water. In the interest of total transparency, I've spent some pretty significant occasions at this place: my parents surprised me with a brand-new car here for my 17th birthday, my boyfriend and I ate here the morning after we got together, and it's always the last place I chose to eat before starting out on the road to head back to college. It's not very often you come to a breakfast place and are surprised at the different offerings they have (usually, you expect the standard omelette varieties, the make-your-own, a benedict, some frittatas, the griddle section, etc etc.) But here they have so many different KINDS of benedict, so many options for customization... Even with their beverages! They have fresh-squeezed strawberry orange juice, and their hot chocolate comes in a stout little ceramic mug. Here's the clincher, though: down the road, there's another beloved breakfast institution that bills itself as a pancake house. Egg Harbor outdoes Walker Bros. even in the griddle department. The cinnamon roll french toast is worth every glazey bite, and, unlike some sweet breakfasts, doesn't put you down for the rest of the day. The banana bread french toast is a little less sweet, a little less dense, but every moist, eggy, syrupy bite demands to be savored. My favorite little breakfast place!!! I live downtown Highland Park, but it's worth passing the local diners and heading over to Lake Forest. The staff is wonderful, from the moment you walk in the door, everyone is helpful and welcoming. The place is very clean and just small enough to still feel cozy but not so small that you can't push a stroller or wheelchair through. The food is excellent! They always have specials made from fresh seasonal ingredients, most of which are bought locally! I don't know if I can even list my favorites because they are all so good. I especially like the frittata with the avocado, bacon, and chives. Also, whenever they use a speciality bread for French toast..amazing things happen! (Think cinnamon and cream cheese French toast) Another favorite thing of mine is the Intelligentsia coffee that they are always serving. It makes a world of difference to have great coffee ( also a local Chicagoland company ) instead of the bitter brown water most places serve. They serve all of their English muffins with some sort of magical homemade berry jam/compote. They brew Intelligentisa coffee. Even the mints they leave with your check are great. Service is generally good, though I wish they could show a bit of discretion. I can't imagine we're the only ones bringing potential employees in. While it's certainly no secret to our candidates that they aren't the only one we entertain, it gets awkward when a server asks what happened to our friend from the previous day. The food is great and it has a unique atmosphere. It can feel a little cramped at times though during busy hours. On the bright side, I've never had to wait really long for seats and parking has never been a problem. In terms of food I usually stick to ordering their ultimate skillet and sub in avocado instead of ham and it comes with an english muffin and jelly. Sooo good. Looking at this restaurant, I would've never guessed that it was part of a chain. The inside was very homey looking and there were lots of unique decorations and pictures hung up around the walls. I can't believe I am leaving this review and it makes me sad to do so. This is maybe the 2nd review I have ever posted. I have been to Egg Harbor in all of their locations way too many times to count. My son, who is a proud gay man worked there for a while along with many other proud members of the lgbtq community. When I saw the article about the mural representing inclusion and human rights that was beautifully painted by the Lake Forest High School Human Rights Club in the window of EHC in Lake Forest was taken down quickly after it was completed due to the complaints of a few bigots I was truly flabbergasted and I still am. There is an article that is in the Lake Forest Scout (high school newspaper - link below) about this. As the father of two kids that grew up around here that are both proud members of the lgbtq community, as well as given that we live in 2021, there is no reason that this mural should have been removed. The excuses made by management are simply not good enough. There is a long tradition in the north suburbs (like all of them) that clubs paint windows in town during homecoming and they are left up for a length of time - there was nothing that was on this mural that is hurtful to anyone or any group. The issue people had was clear - and unfortunately this is not the first time this bigoted behavior has been seen in Lake Forest and there is no reason that a local business should have made this snap decision when Human Rights is a subject that is obviously so personal to the members of this club. As the other reviewer said - in my opinion EHC management owes this club and these kids a formal apology. They owe them the opportunity to repaint their mural and should offer to leave it up for a meaningful length of time. Anything less is simply not enough and is a cop out on the behalf of management. Let's see if they do the right thing.
