Traditional Mexican food served by sweet people in huge portions. The Margaritas are cheap and huge - I double dog dare you to drink all of the large one but don't plan on driving afterwards! ** 3.5 Stars ** A long overdue Girls Night Out had us jonesin' for some good food and margaritas. **El Agave enters the scene** All the vibrant colors and decor create such a fun vibe. Food=Good. Drinks=Okay. Prices=Great. We went on a Wednesday night and took advantage of the 2 for 1 margarita special... pour it up, pour it up. Double fisting for the win. They definitely weren't the best margaritas, but for the price we couldn't complain too much. You get what you pay for. The complimentary chips, salsa, and bean dip were decent. The salsa was bold and smoky with a slight kick. It was good but the consistency was too thin for my liking. I'm not a big fan of bean dip but my friends liked it. To start, I ordered two flautas, one chicken and one shredded beef. Both were tasty. For my meal, I ordered Combo E, which consisted of a beef taco, a beef enchilada, and a chile relleno, which is a poblano pepper stuffed with queso, then breaded and deep fried... yum! It was accompanied by a side of refried beans and rice, but I requested double rice instead. Everything was well-seasoned and full of flavor. The service was attentive at first but grew spotty once the food had arrived. We had to flag down a server several times for drink refills and additional food orders. We picked this place due to Yelp reviews. We pulled up and thought it was pretty cute, a converted home. We were seated and the set- ups were brought to the table as well as our drinks. As we were reading the menu, we noticed the people behind us had a pry and asked the waitress to come to their table. He was discreet about it. As the waitress ignore more requests to come to the table, he got louder. He told us and showed us a roach floating in his glass of tea. We don't know if it was in the tea, glass or ice but luckily I had not had a drink yet. Needless to say, we got up and left. read more

Came in at 1130 and the parking lot was full. It was busy inside but I was sat quickly. Drink order was taken right away and food ordered shortly after. I ordered the lunch steak fajita and it was delicious. I've had better salsa but the bean dip was great. I dined alone and was on my phone so the server stayed away and me er checked on me. This was our first time here and we enjoyed every bit of it! The food was delicious and the service was great! There were only 3 people who were working and they were all helping each other. Victor was our host and server and even though he was busy he checked on us regularly. He answered all my questions. We forgot to take pictures, but you know it was really good now! I'll preface this review by adding that I never have set foot in this restaurant, all of my experiences are from going through the Waitr delivery service. Ok, moving on. This restaurant is okay, the food is hit or miss for the most part. Tonight I ordered the fajitas texanas and the flavor was definitely on point, my problem is that the only part of it that wasn't dry was the shrimp. (Which were outstanding). The rice and beans were okay, but the salsa was a huge turn off. Reminded me of ketchup. For $3 the horchata I got was HUGE, but I specifically asked for it to have no ice because of my sensitive teeth and when I got it, it was filled with ice. That place is really great. I love the authentic feel of both the food and service. I had the Arroz con Mariscos which had rice, shrimp, and scallops. Very good. Would order that again next time. The salsa and the cheese dip we had were also just about perfect. You can tell they care about the quality of their food here. If you want an excellent sweet treat, get some of their dessert! This is a barely okay Mexican restaurant. On the plus side, our server was polite and fast, though she did forget one dessert. The bring you complimentary chips, salsa, and mole dip. It was quite good. Things went downhill from there. The guacamole I ordered was not fresh (it had water pooling in the bowl where it had been sitting in a refrigerator). The quesadillas were "meh" to be quite honest. The fried ice cream was frozen solid with stale corn flake covering (also not fresh). The bathroom, well just hope you don't have to go in there. It seems clean, but I'm not convinced. There are better Mexican places in the area that should get your money before trying out this place. read more

Visited for the first time this weekend. The bean dip was the best I've ever had from any of the similar restaurants we've visited. The margaritas were great, not too sweet or too sour. All the food was so fresh and Maggie was the sweetest! We'll be back soon! read more

This is the worst example of Mexican food I've ever experienced. I came in for a taco and got two hard tacos with virtually nothing in it but cheese and lettuce. I asked for two soft tacos with corn tortillas that came to me with tough meet wilted lettuce melted American cheese in the grease was soaking through the Shell you can even pick it up. The flavor was horrible the texture was horrible and the grease was dripping wet really bad I'll never go back. Two hours after getting home I ended up throwing up the tacos that I ate there. read more

El agave has become a favorite for my gal and i. We've yet to have a bad experience and we have gone fairly often. Their prices are good. The quality of food is excellent and the portion size isnt bad either. Very friendly service makes you feel welcome. The chimichanga (spell?) Is my go too here, that and the cheese dip. I have and will continue to recommend this place....if you're ever in the mood for Mexican food, do yourself a favor and try el agave! read more

DO NOT GO HERE.....If it were not for the inability to click 0 stars, this would be a 0 star review. The only positive: the gentleman who served us was polite, efficient and handled our party/parties well. The negative: The manager or lady responsible to take our payment gave us, by far, the worst customer service I've ever received at any establishment. On the other hand, if you would like someone to argue, yell and scream at you, man oh man is this the place for you. To be fair to both sides I will leave the exact details of our encounter below: Once arriving both parties (8 ppl total seated at 2 adjoined tables) placed our coupons on the table. We've grown accustom to doing this at all places we use coupons, because if there's an issue the server will address it immediately. No one spoke of our coupons. We even discussed in front of the server getting 2 tickets to use on separate coupons, no objections. Upon leaving, we were given 2 tickets and put the coupons on top of each. Before standing up from the table a random employee, who had yet to interact with our table at all, approached us. There was no "excuse me" or introduction to who she was. She just blurted out "We will not take 2 coupons on one bill!" The obvious reply, well we have 2 bills so not a problem. The response, "You are at one table and can only use one coupon. It says so on the coupon." In fact it does not. It says only 1 coupon per party of 2. Which if approached originally, we would've been happy to split up tables. Again, it does not say this. The only additional language says "Subject to Rules of Use." Which after I read aloud, the lady responds with "Yes, Rules of Use! Our Rules of Use are you get one coupon!" At this point the entire table is clearly displeased with the handling of the situation. I proceeded to argue our point, "Okay we agree with that. Please provide us with the rules of use where it states per table, and we will happily pay the amount in full." An argument from this employee ensued and she told us she would go write the rules down for us, but they currently do not exist on paper. It is the 'rule' we are telling you now. Confirming to me and others there is no proper procedure or rule in place. The employee mumbled something and walked off. A few moments later, the first party paid their ticket at the front of the restaurant receiving the discount. When our party went to pay I was not present for the first part of the conversation. When I walk up an argument is going on between this same lady and the person trying to pay our bill. I ask, "What's the big deal? It's $8 off a $50 ticket (party or 4) and future business." I hear, "It's a big deal!" from her, and "Apparently it is a big deal because she said she'd call the cops if we didn't pay in full." from the person paying. Obviously there was banter prior to me getting involved, but a threat to this extent is not acceptable to me. Especially when receiving the rude, disrespectful and hostile treatment non stop from the second this lady was involved. I grabbed the ticket and told her, "Call them! Let's go. Get them down here. They will sort it out real quickly." She snatched the ticket out of my hand and threw it in the trash. Then the screaming at us began. So much so the cook had to come upfront and talk to her to get her to stop screaming at us. She didn't let it go and proceeded to yell something as we were walking out. I told her, "You just ruined the reputation here." She seemed to think I meant her and yelled some more. I clarified, "No, this restaurants reputation." We walked out and now I am delivering on showing our experience. The sad part is the whole thing would be avoided by simply confronting us at the beginning or by handling it in a non confrontational manner. read more

Went for dinner last night and we were impressed. First off, the decor is spot on for Mexico with brightly-colored walls and cultural paintings. Spanish on the TV and Mexican people on staff which is a good sign. Service was fast and food was good. From the chips and salsa (comes out with warm bean dip too!) to our fruit filled churro dessert, the meal was just what I wanted. Did I mention that Thursday is $1.50 taco day? What a deal! I love this little spot. Whenever I hit antique row on Navy, I have to stop here. The lunch specials are great. I have been all over the world and had a lot of authentic Mexican food. I will say they do "dumb it down" a bit for the natives. With that said, I am a bit older and get some heartburn, so I LOVE THIS about this place. We each have a favorite that we order each time and it is always wonderful! I love the steak fajitas and he gets another special from the lunch menu. Who serves the lunch specials even on the weekends? I have had fajitas from pricey restaurants and these are very comparable! I had the chimichanga with shredded chicken. I have eaten this particular dish from this restaurant before and have not had reason to complain, but this time was different. They put guacamole on it, which I specifically asked them to omit from the order, and then I found a huge bone in my chimichanga. I do not think I will be eating there again. We used to frequent this restaurant in the past, but haven't been in about a year. Ate there tonight and can say that the quality has gone down drastically! First of all, our food came out in about 5 minutes - which was great because we had our hangry 2 year old with us, but says a lot about the freshness (or lack thereof). My husband's "spicy burrito" had zero heat to it, and when he said something to the server, the guy just laughed and asked if he wanted some hot sauce. Nothing else. Didn't even bring the hot sauce! I had asked for green sauce on my steak enchiladas - they came out with red sauce, which tasted like Ragu with oregano and a touch of Tapatio. The rice was like fried rice with canned green beans/peas/corn in it - was crispy like it had been sitting on a warmer all day and bland to say the least... and the cheese enchilada I ordered for my toddler (which he knew I ordered for my son) came out blazing hot, like it had been sitting under the salamander for 10mins. He couldn't eat it for another 10 mins, even with us blowing on it furiously. Don't know what's changed in the past year, but it definitely wasn't for the better.
