We took our neighbors here on May 10th to celebrate Mother's Day with us. Place was packed "as usual". Special thanks to our waitress Elma for her Outstanding service and attention to our table needs. She is quite the professional. My wife our lady Friend both enjoyed the Alambres steak filets that was mouth watering as usual served with Spanish rice and potatoes. Complimentary Poblano homemade Soup by Mama Garza. I order Chef Luis Garza's El Horno which is salmon on top of white rice smothered in a homemade lobster sauce with a large shrimp on top and wrapped up in a banana leaf. My friend ordered the Steak Fajitas. He enjoyed the sliced steak cooked in butter with onion , bell peppers and covered with a white cheese. Side dishes of salad and poblano soup of course. The entire restaurant had tables filled with various colorful well plated dishes thanks to Chef Luis and His staff. The French say Bon a petite ! In Spanish it is " Disfrute de su comida "! Oh, Oh I almost forgot they have a very hot white creamy Habanero pepper salsa for your homemade and warm corn chips in addition to the two red hot and mild salsas' , I mixed a tad of this with the guacamole . This was my first time trying the steak at ASADOR. I had high hopes, but the meal was just okay. The GoodThe steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare. It had a nice, salty crust on the outside. The meat was also very juicy. The BadThe cut of meat was very stringy. I had to chew each bite for a long time. It was also served warm instead of hot. This is the best spot I would say top two (other is Tacos Wuey) to go for steak in southwest Detroit. You will literally never be disappointed with the steak! However I can say other menu it's are equally just as tasty! The poblano soup is some of my favorite soup to get! I always order it. The ambiance is small inside. This place is such a great "hidden gem" for dinner! Authentic, delicious, relatively high-end Mexican food. The last time I visited, I split the table side guacamole with friends and had the Ranchero New York Steak as my main course. The guacamole is the best in town, and the steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked. A great feature is that you can BYOB (wine and beer) -- I brought a nice bottle of wine from my cellar, which paired perfectly with my meal. Service is friendly and quick, even on a Saturday night. Not gonna lie, though -- the place could use a bit of a facelift, particularly the bathrooms. I hadn't visited in a couple of years and it's definitely starting to feel a bit tired, though it's still comfortable and enjoyable. A must-visit for sure! read more

What a cute and small restaurant! Me and my family were seated immediately and very well taken of. The waitress was attentive but quick with our orders, which were all delicious. We parked in the rear, naturally thought the entrance was in the rear. Came to the open door and saw food(rice and shredded chicken) just sitting there out on trays just waiting to be served. We definitely need to come back for dinner, there are many dishes that caught my eye. El Asador is perfect for an anniversary or a birthday, or even a first date. El Asador is like a hidden treasure of delicious Mexican food. I was very pleased with a recent visit and will definitely return. They have a parking lot in the back and to the side of the restaurant with security. We made a reservation but it turned out it wasn't really needed. Staff were efficient and courteous. We ordered a queso fundido (gooey melty cheese with chorizo and warm tortillas for dipping) appetizer. It was delicious but could have used more tortillas - it came with three and we had a party of three. I ordered the chicken mole and it came with choice of soup or salad. I selected the salad and wow am I glad I did because the salad was an absolute star - lots of fresh ingredients, definitely a step up from your standard garden salad, and an absolutely delicious Caesar dressing. It was so good, I've been thinking about getting just a Caesar salad the next time I visit. The chicken with mole sauce was excellent and substantial. The sauce was layered with flavors and the dish came with some excellent green beans cooked with tomatoes, and seasoned rice. I had leftovers for lunch the next day. The other members of my party ordered enchiladas and chiles rellenos and were both very pleased with their meals. One tried the soup instead of the salad and they thought that was great too. Our waitress overheard that we were celebrating a birthday and she brought out a tres leches cake for dessert with a candle as a nice surprise. The tres leches cake was also excellent. My colleague and I went for dinner on a Tuesday evening. We made reservations ahead of time for 6:30, and we were certainly glad we did. The place was packed...every table full. We were seated right away and greeted by our server. Then we waited...and waited...and waited...a good 30 minutes before she returned to take our order. She was friendly and pleasant, just not anywhere to be seen most of the time we were there. On to the food, which was excellent. I was pleased with the private parking lot which is monitored by a friendly security guard and a cute black cat. Upon entry, I was seated immediately as the Friday night crowd hadn't arrived. While waiting for my dinner companion to arrive, I chatted with the waitress who informed me that it gets really busy on weekend nights. She also explained that diners are welcome to bring their own libations to accompany their meals. There is no corking fee. The food is authentic Mexican cuisine. I ordered steak and chicken fajitas. All entrees come with two sides and a choice of salad or soup. I opted for soup, which was a creamy poblano and corn soup, potatoes and vegetables. Everything was great. My company ordered calamari which he immediately commented was light and fresh, and an appetizer dish with a variety of peppers and chorizo. He loved it all. We had a very enjoyable time. I had Prime and Proper booked with some friends for my birthday. A friend of a friend I met shortly before departing held his head and with much pity in his voice told us we ought to cancel the reservation and get a better meal at El Asador for a fifth of the price. We did not. Months later I decided to take the venture to the previously unknown side of Mexicantown with a friend (turns out it's an area called Springwells, alright). The hostess/waitress asks us if we have a roughly 4:30pm reservation on a Wednesday with two other tables seated in the restaurant. We did not, but it was thankfully not an issue. The ambiance was a bit dollar store with a bunch of odd rules posted on how they take their cash and split parties. I don't know the area, maybe this is somehow necessary. The menus had definitely seen better days. The pricing and initial impressions briefly struck me with a hinted fear of an undesirable meal. The waitress took our drink orders and brought chips and salsa while we figured out what we wanted to eat. The chips and salsa were excellent. She recommended the ribeye as the best steak on the menu and the poblano soup. I usually hate ribeye so we decided to split it and also the fillet, get the soups, and some Ceasar salad. Everything was absolutely phenomenal. Everything down to the beans and rice. The service was actually excellent too. I was window licking shocked at how delicious and enjoyable it was to eat the ribeye. The poblano sauce on it was out of this world. The waitress was right. It's better than the fillet and they still have an excellent perfectly cooked fillet. El Asador really has some heart in it. It's way off the beaten path, but this hidden gem would rule Mexicantown if it went a few miles over. It has some quirks but you're getting incredible uniquely authentic Mexican cuisine at fair prices. I think about this place so often, I'll be back soon. read more

We are greeted upon entering restaurant. Plates, glasses and rolled silverware are already on the table. The lighting is appropriate for the setting. The decor is traditional colors. Plates had dust on them and the glasses had finger prints on them. We didn't let that bother our meal. We just switched items. The soup was creamy and had a little kick. Went here at my partners suggestion last night. We meandered on our route and arrived out front of this unassuming cozy restaurant. We sat inside and lucky for us it wasn't busy. The waitress was prompt and attentive. She was able to describe menu items well. The chips were fresh salty and supportive of the hearty spicy salsa that was served. My partner has the chili releno and ate it until no bites were left. The mole was delicious and filling. Part of it made its way home! Next time I will definitely byb- there is no corking fee! Above the bad service and expensive food is the taste. We took our mother here for her birthday dinner. From the $4 small basket of chips to her soup then finally her greasy flavorless fajita. Watching her face go from excited to disappointed after every dish was disheartening. I'm surprised no one came to ask how everything was considering most of the plates picked up from the table were pretty much full. My mother clearly understood that this food isn't meant for us. it's clearly white washed and high priced intended for those that don't know any better. Phenomenal. Everything was absolutely beautifully delicious. Gabrielle's guacamole was 5 stars as she made it fresh next to our table. The poblano pepper soup that came with our entrées was a delicious surprise & my chile relleno was the best I've ever tasted. Just the right amount of cheese, fresh quality ingredients. (I'm vegetarian and that is my go to!) My husband had the mahi mahi. Incredible. We had to pace ourselves with the guacamole and the complementary chips and salsa bc we nearly left no room for our main. Although quite unassuming on the outside, El Asador is a top notch dining experience tucked away in Mexicantown. Service: Our service was great--our server Doris was friendly and quite thorough in her explanations of the menu. One thing to note: they serve water and a few soft drinks, but encourage guests to bring their own beverages if they want anything outside of that. There is no fee to bring in outside beverages. Ambiance: The restaurant is nice on the inside, with a charming Pueblo style design. You would never know it's like that from driving by. Food: Spectacular. Everything is made fresh, so expect to wait a little to get your food. I had the chicken and steak fajitas. The meat was so tender and seasoned to perfection. The guac was delicious--there's some combination of salt, lime, herbs, and tomato they use that really sets it over the top. One of my favorite restaurants in Detroit! I've been coming here for years and they have something for every mood. Their table side guac service is the BEST - it's so fresh and fun, I brought my parents once and they loved it too! The lobster quesadilla is also one of my favorites. For entrees, the steak alambre is so good and a great portion, and I also love all their fajitas. The Mexican tortilla soup is my absolute favorite but unfortunately has been unavailable the last few times I went - hopefully they bring it back! One of my all time favorite restaurants. I'm kind of a food snob and I can't pick out one bad thing about their food. Chef Garza is a wonderful human and his food is absolute heaven! The filet is my go to favorite, it is so tender and the three Chile butter sauce is so good you'll want to lick the plate clean. The camarones en salsa de langosta is my husbands favorite, it's creamy and delicious, unlike anything you've had before. The poblano soup is amazing! Make sure you get the table side guac. It is so fresh and better than any other place around! The salmon is melt in your mouth. The camarones a la Diabla has a bit of a kick, but mixed with the avocado, it's a wonderful combo!
