A delicious addition to the rapidly growing Franklin Avenue line-up of business establishments. And I'm so happy that it's a Mexican food spot! I am a vegan and am very pleased to have another place that is accommodating, but it also seems that people of all dietary adherences would be very satisfied with the options. I had a naked veggie burrito with brown rice and it came with tons of roasted corn, amazing guacamole, squash, cauliflower and other veggies and everything was well-seasoned (although, I added a really good habañera salsa to mine because I love it to be really spicy, and the salsa was also excellent and REALLY hot!) It's like a burrito salad, and that is combining 2 of my favorite culinary staples. WELL DONE, el barrio. I also got a homemade blueberry limeade that was really good and perfect for a summer evening. My friend ordered the strawberry limeade and I was jealous, I'm going to get that next time--and yes there will be a next time, many more next times. It is a small spot, and we did have to wait a little bit (maybe like 10-12 minutes?) but nothing extreme. AND the food was worth the wait. read more

Update: Don't listen to the haters. There are some really unnecessarily harsh reviews on here. I have been back and still really enjoyed my experience. I have friends who live in the area and they are regulars now. The staff has gotten much better since working out the kinks of the first month of business. The wait time is much shorter than it had been. The shrimp burritos are amazing. They would wrap upon request, but i prefered the fork and knife approach. El barrio burritos is overpriced and crappy. Had a steak quesadilla and have nothing good to say about that. There are a million hole in the wall authentic places to get tacos nearby. Before gentrification, you have a regular place with Latino owners and staff who serve better food for less money. A family place. Now, you get a place with crappy food, cookie cutter graphic design and "fast casual" vibe, blaring indie music, and the white employees yell "one steak Q" back into the kitchen after my friend places the order. Something doesn't seem right. I was just struck by the gall of naming this place el barrio burritos. Since the food/experience/ownership is so far from authentic, I wondered whether there choice of name was a winking acknowledgement on the owner's part, saying: we know what we're doing, fuck you. It's just a shame that consumers seem to time and time again choose tired design elements over authenticity. Thankfully no mason jars, plus 1 star for no mason jars. This is the PERFECT local spot!! The staff are wonderful, personable and know how to deliver GREAT service. The staff is just a nice group of people that make this a true gem. The food is the right amount and the right price. As everything in the area continues to increase in price, this spot is still the right price. I've used delivery and everytime the food is still Hot and Fresh. I really can't say enough wonderful things about this place. I always walk in here but one night i decided to have them deliver. My story: I placed an order, food arrived over 1 hour late and it was cold! :( Gave them a call, the manager/partner Daniel told me he would have another order delivered right to me. This is a pickup, or delivery Resturant my husband and I just discovered. It is a vegan neighborhood treasure. We've dropped in to pick up dishes on several occasions. The food is consistently delicious, and flavorful. The portions are just what you need. It's always fresh, and appeals to all your senses. Plus the prices are easy on your wallet. The staff is friendly. If you should make a phone order for delivery, be sure to confirm the order. The one time I did this, I had to repeat the order 5 times before the person on the phone got the 2 dish order correct. The upside to that phone order was the speedy delivery. A small spot in a great location right off the train has become my go-to place for a healthy and quick dinner solution time and time again. We usually order the fajita chicken burrito and grilled chicken hard shell tacos, with their salsa being the perfect add-on. I like what I know, but you don't have to stick to the tried and true. The have an extensive menu that will appeal to carnivores and vegans and all those in between. We know the food is going to be consistently good with fresh ingredients made clean to order. The emphasis is on healthy. It's not the kind of place where all the meats are covered in sodium-heavy sauces or unidentifiable meats are stuck in between some store-bought taco shells. It is a sincere take on Mexican food with a healthier approach, making it easier for vegetarians and vegans as well to enjoy the brilliant combination of peppers, salsa, and tortillas from south of the border. I've yet to try their smoothies, but I have taken home several bottles of the Cholula hot sauce and Jarritos sodas. El Barrio is inexpensive, consistent, quick and a great little mexican spot in the area. It really isn't a place to sit and eat, but it's great to take out either back home or to the park. Everyone who works there is awesome and they play great music! If you order the large guac and chips you get a so much guac and it's delicious! There are great vegan and vegetarian options especially the vegan cookie found in the refrigerator. Definitely give this place a try, it's a staple every weekend! read more

I actually found this place to be ok. I ordered the spicy steak burrito with hot sauce sour, cream, and guac. $12.50 after tax. It held up pretty good on the bike ride home. The burrito was a solid 4 out of 5 donkeys. There could have been more sour cream and guac evenly dispersed, but I could let it slide. I think this place has a better burrito than taqueria de Los muertos and miles better than la burrito which I thoroughly hate. Not taking into account the waiting which felt like The Lord of the rings trilogy, during which, all I could do was make awkward eye contact with the chick with the cool haircut behind the register. On a side note, she's being micromanaged to the power of ten. We're the middle aged men bickering behind the register the owners? Idk. But seriously this place is to small to support the oxygen requirements of of so many damn people working behind the register. In short, I recommended it. Steven: I'm both baffled and amused that you think I'm "not an actual customer" who is trying to "damage [your] business." I know I'm from Cali w/ Louisiana roots. Refried beans are just as much a part of my food history as are sweet potato pies, gumbo and collard greens but this place? You've got to be kidding me. Beans, man, I just wanted beans. This is my go to cooked food treat when in the streets. First, the girl working the cash register went back and got my beans--no gloves and no hand washing. Second, the beans came up to $2.72 (they're $2.45 at bean spot on Vanderbilt). Third, they were runny and pureed, without texture. Fourth, they were also without flavor. I was rushing and headed to the city. I sat down on the subway train and after taking two spoonfuls put the lid back on. Yes, the refried beans were so bad I tossed the container full in the trash can once I got into the city. Tonight I walked in for the first time hopeful to get a good burrito. The person who took my order was a young girl who had no customer service experience whatsoever. When I asked her what was in the surf n turf she said the menu has good details. When my fiancée asked what was in a certain taco her response was the menu helps. Come on girl it's your first week learn the damn menu! Even though I put my order in was still hopeful I would have a yummy treat. 35 minutes later I got my damn burrito and the owner or manager called my name and didn't say not one thing about waiting 35 effing minutes for a damn burrito. Ordered 1 Steak Quesadilla and 3 Chicken Tacos. I reside approx. .4 miles from this establishment. The food arrived COLD/SOGGY/MESSY/FLAVORLESS approximately 1.2 hours after placing this order. The customer service at this location is also terrible. The employees were apathetic regarding the deplorable state of my meal and have dragged their feet, in efforts to refund me the value of my meal. This is the last time I will ever patronize this establishment - and I highly recommend you take your talents to an institution like Gueros, for authentic, high quality, and wonderfully valued fare. El Barrio Burritos is an Imposter. I will be grateful when this establishment closes up, and a more worthy restaurant replaces it. read more

As a rule, I try not to get upset over food - it's just not worth it. However, after my fourth poor experience with this place I feel it's time to speak up. I make it a point to support the local establishments, but sadly El Barrio Burritos will no longer be one of them. The service is poor and the food is seriously lacking. I live across the street and have never had a pick up that was ready on time, and I usually arrive late. Not only that, during my most recent visit my order was actually sitting on the counter for several minutes until I had to remind the staff I was still waiting. I was one of the 3 people there. My biggest annoyance is that the food is both overcooked AND lukewarm. I seriously have not had a hot or warm meal from this place. When they originally opened 6 months ago it was easy to excuse all of the shortcomings. Unfortunately, we are almost into the New Year, and there are plenty of better options in the area. Which is a shame because I like to support the new joints on my block as often as possible. I ordered the beef chili burrito, which supposedly also came with salad or chips and a choice of beans according to the menu. I asked what the "chili" was and they said it's just beans. Ok. I ordered it with the salad and they said because my burrito had beans on it, I didn't get the choice of beans as a side as indicated on the menu. Hmm. I can count on one hand the number of beans I encountered in the burrito. The burrito and ingredients were bland and flavorless. Nothing was fresh.
