Got some food and alcohol here last night after a disappointing (to say the least) experience at Kells Irish Restaurant & Bar. The food was great, service was great, and prices were reasonable for the city. Love that everything there is vegan as well - no guessing and no surprises when it turns out the wait staff forgot there was dairy in something. We ordered the shrymp, seitan, and jackfruit tacos, the shrymp and the potato bowls, chips and salsa, and a horchata. Loved the chips and salsam seitan, shrymp and potato dishes. The jackfruit was a bit flavorless and the horchata was very sweet. But overall, it's still a 5 star review. They also have various hot sauces in their mini fridge that you can self serve - the sauces aren't super hot, at least not for us as we love hot sauce. They also have a large bar offering. And the folks that work there are very nice and welcoming. read more

This place was great people, great drinks, great food. When my girlfriend and I walked in, we were immediately greeted. I don't know the guys name but he seemed like an owner, that's how well he greeted us. We got a full explanation of the restaurant and how there is salsa in the salsa fridge, fresh made everyday! Heck yes! We choose a seat at the bar and order the pineapple jalapeno margarita. It was something I've never had before. They make their flavored sweet and sours in house. I'd love to try them all, too bad I live in California. I ordered the nachos with added beef on top. I have to say it was VERY pricey, but so delicious. We got the happy hour chips and salsa, and quesadilla along with the beef burrito. Everything was devoured. No kids on the patio or around the bar area, we need this rule in California! Visiting my vegan cousin in Seattle, we heard this was THE spot. We had an overall fine experience. The people are nice, and the vibe inside is warm. The food overall wasn't something I'd got back for for seconds. The chips and salsa were my favorite part as they both had nice flavors and a good kick. The jackfruit tacos were a little too cinamony and my vegan shript plate was hard to get through do to the saltiness and texture, but the elements were good and there. Glad we tried it. read more

I just want to know why. This is a painful review to write. I used to come to El Borracho two or three times a week pre-COVID; I'd come over for happy hour after hitting the gym, or take a giant chicken or steak burrito to go with absolutely fantastic guacamole, incredible house chips and delicious salsa, and a huge variety of hot sauces that were on ice nearby, ready to spice everything up. For Happy Hour, the tacos were smaller but cheap and plentiful, and just plain tasty. Now, it's all gone. The people; the meat; the quality; the ambiance. It's an actual shell of what it used to be. I don't blame the service; it's prompt, attentive, friendly and honestly quite pleasant. But after you have a bite of your cold chips, blender-grade guac that you could buy in a packet at a 7-11, and astonishingly unpleasant vegan food, you won't want to stay. I sat and watched three or four couples around me have a drink and chips and maybe a little food, make a face, then immediately disappear. I felt that way myself with my group and we all talked about our great grief, as if we'd lost a familiar friend. I know COVID is hard and has caused a lot of hardship, but something else is happening here. I'm actually sad as I write this and it hurts to see what was once one of my favorite Seattle Institutions fall completely off the map. Do yourself a favor if you've been here before and remember it as it was and don't come back. Or please, ownership, just tell me why this is happening so we can be more understanding. Far from what I expected going to Pike's Place, I thought I was in for touristy restaurants, but found a friendly bar and good people and food. Adam the bartender made my day and had such a great time hanging out that I came back for lunch and dinner. I was excited to try the food here, but this restaurant doesn't allow minors to eat on the patio, so we couldn't eat here. Families with minors need to eat in the back, with no outdoor seating option. Due to Covid, my family is only enjoying outdoor dining since I am immunocompromised, but they wouldn't let us eat on the patio. Also, the staff was uncaring and barely stopped for long enough to even ask one or two questions. I read in a prior review written only two weeks ago that the "no minors on patio" policy was only after 5pm. I came here with my family for lunch and they still wouldn't let us sit on the patio. I mentioned that I'm immunocompromised and we can only eat outside due to Covid, but they still said no. The fact that this policy even exists justifies writing a one star review. I've never been to any restaurant that didn't allow kids, at least during the day before turning into a loud bar or club at night. I could understand if it were a fancy Michelin restaurant or something like that, but for a vegan casual dining restaurant, this policy makes no sense and is unnecessary restrictive. I'd gladly change this review if they update their policy. read more

Vegan Mexican food is the experience you didn't know you needed! No flavour is spared, the portions are large, and the additional selection of sauces provided is fantastic! The location is also wonderful, with a small patio near Pike Place Market. It has a cozy sports bar feel inside, and the servers are very friendly. I arrived for the advertised happy hour - although happy hour deals were somewhat limited (I did take advantage of the $2 nachos and $0.50 off beers) the menu prices were not outrageous to begin with. The margaritas were advertised as incredible, but unfortunately out of my price range so I stuck with a beer. I've been going to El Borracho for years--my friends and I considered it a go-to happy hour staple. The atmosphere, the cheap drinks, the cheap, tasty eats... it was often the perfect end to a long workday downtown. I'm not giving this a one star review as a vegan Mexican place... I'm giving it a one star review as a Mexican place that I'm no longer interested in. More power to those who use their businesses for social awareness and good news for vegans who now can choose anything/everything on the menu, but I'm simply not interested. As a Hispanic woman, Mexican style food is hard to impress me. I have an ideal of what it should be. This didn't disappoint. The salsa was good with just the right amount of heat. We ordered a shrimp taco and a potato taco. Both were delicious. The potato taco was labeled gluten free and that's why I got it. The service was good. It was a self essay and order atmosphere. The nachos: soggy chips, metallic tasting olives, hardly ANY cheese! seriously, what are nachos if not covered in delicious cheese? All in all a serious down grade from my experience getting the vegan nachos at their ballard location years ago... i dont have words for the chikn tinga except bland. 2. The beefy: sigh. a tortilla almost entirely full of unseasoned beyond beefy crumbles and a small portion of refried beans. My partner ate it after a few drinks at a wedding that had no vegan food available, and even then with their drunk munchies, it was unpalatable. 3. The not-so-cheesy bean and rice: absolutely no flavor other than plain, likely canned refried beans. Way overpriced for the lack of flavor and quality. I would have rather drove out of my way and got taco bell or even taco time for some appropriately priced food. This place is right by pike place market so if you're looking for good vegan food it's definitely work checking it out. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We opted to sit out on the patio since it was a nice day. The bartender gave us the rundown when we arrived. You place your order at the table using a QR code and they bring the food out to you. If you want any drinks at the bar you just order them at the bar and they will bring them out to you. There is also self serve water if you just want water to drink. My BF and I ordered the nachos to share and a taco each(seitan barbacoa and chipotle potato) and it was the perfect amount of food for us. We also tried two of their margaritas(Hibiscus one and the pineapple habanero one). Both margaritas were so tasty and if you are worried about the pineapple habanero ones being too spicy, it had the perfect amount of heat to it. They have a mini fridge inside that has self serve salsas. We tried 3 of the salsas(red, green, and chipotle) all were very flavorful. We were checked on a bunch throughout our visit and the service was fantastic. I would definitely return again. read more

I am somewhat sad to write this review about the Pike's Place location, but I think people need to be warned of potential dissapointment. I appreciate that this place went vegan, but I hope they consider giving larger portions and/or making sure the food items (tacos, burritos, etc) include enough of the topping ingredients to make them look like they're worth the money, or at least something special. None of our 4 tacos contained more than 3 tiny pieces of raw onion on top - as a result they came off as less interesting than what I make at home...I won't be ordering them again. The sides of black beans & rice (we bought them separately at $3.50 and $3.25 respectively) - were miniscule. The black bean side was UNDER half full (not sure if this was a mistake) - we're talking like MAYBE 3 tbsp of beans, also very bland tasting. The rice also wasn't full, but it did taste yummy. The other disappointing thing is that when I asked the bartender for a menu (to order to-go) he directed me to the paper menu attached to the OUTSIDE of their window, without letting me know that I could also scan a QR code and read the menu from my phone. This would have been nice to know before trying to reiterate a menu that I couldn't view while ordering - multiple times I couldn't remember what I was ordering. I know I may have overlooked the QR code sign - but please help your customers instead of assuming they are just being annoying by asking extra questions. read more

I've not had a vegan burrito this good since moving to Portland OR 14 years ago. I got the jackfruit and my husband got the chorizo and potato. My 4 yo loved the simple bean, cheese and rice burrito. I really liked the flavor of the jackfruit and the rice was tasty. Frustrating that you can only sit outdoors if you are over 21 - we aren't yet ready to have our kid unmasked indoors but we found a bench not that far to sit and eat. Vegan Mexican food? My boyfriend and I were intrigued and wanted to give it a try. We sat down and one of the employees asked for our ID. We knew this was a 21+ place but when the employee looked at my ID, he immediately said I couldn't sit there and I needed to leave to the back. Keep in mind I'm 23, so he didn't read my ID correctly. We politely told him to look at my ID again as we thought maybe it was an honest mistake, but he was incredibly rude and immediately left our table. You order through a QR code menu, so my boyfriend placed an order for an impossible burger burrito. We wanted drinks and thought we would order with him. When he brought the burrito out, we asked him about drinks and he rudely told us to order at the bar. Since we already paid for the food, we just left. Delicious VEGAN tacos in the heart of Seattle! The Al pastor, barbacoa and shrimp were delicious! Ordering was super quick and easy using the QR code at each table (make sure your phone is charged!). I've been here a few times since they went to a vegan menu and quite enjoyed several of the menu items. Unfortunately, they've changed the menu yet again. This time they got rid of some of the better tacos, and replaced them with both potato based tacos and tacos using potatoes as a filler ingredient. Bottom line, if you're planning to just get drinks at the bar (note: at the bar, this is otherwise a self service restaurant) it's a decent choice.
