I haven't been to El Caporal for several years.......love the new location. The building is bright and cheery and the food was delicious!

Chips and salsa were good with a cabbage dip. Very disappointed with the fish tacos...dry fish in a taco with no sauce, a small amount of salsa, beans and dry rice. Lovely building. Sorry for the not so good review read more

What can I say about this place except great! A little off the beaten path so feels more like a locals place which is nice. Have also overheard locals bringing their out of town friends in for some good food. We have been a little let down with some other Mexican food places in town, most are just ok an nothing to write home about, but El Caporal seems like an old friend. We love to sit in the lounge which is very comfortable, colorful and have the services of our favorite waiter and bar tender. Always knows our drink choice, talks about family very outgoing. We have sampled several dishes and every one was very tasty. Carne Asada, Chili Colorado and Flautus being our go too meals. Very generous portions, chips and salsa are nice, comes with a red salsa and Salsa Fresca. Wide variety of margaritas, our favorite being the perfect and perfect hibiscus Margarita's. Gets very busy on Friday nights and Saturday. We visit (at least) once a week. Always a pleasant experience. read more

I love this restaurant! I eat here with my friends and family at least a couple times a month. The food is always great and the service is even better. Even when you order food to go, they offer you water while you wait and update you on how long it will be if they are really busy. This is my favorite Tex-Mex style restaurant in Bend. read more

Food was delayed twice and then cancelled. Very very poor customer service. Restaurant would not receive calls. Very disappointed.

They claim to have the best Margaritas in town. NOT! I ordered a Cuervo Gold strawberry margarita, did not taste much (If any) tequila. Ordered a second one and asked the server to please make sure there was Cuervo Gold in it because the first did not taste like it had any in it. When she brought it she assured me it was a "Good one" but once again I got a strawberry smoothie. Very disappointing. Upon arriving they brought chips and a cabbage concoction but no salsa, go figure. We ordered been dip and they brought a small saucer (not a small plate, but a saucer like you use to put a coffee cup on) with beans. The food was ok, nothing spectacular and a bit over priced for the portion size. Apparently they are trying to save money for their new building. Service was also lacking a bit as we had to flag down our server for drink refills, more chips, check, etc. We used to come here often because it is close to our house but have found better food at other Mexican restaurants (El Rancho Grande, El Rodeo) and next time we're in the mood for Mexican food we'll make the drive to one of them. read more

I used to be a regular at their old location across the street. I'm never disappointed with the chile colorado, carne asada, or sopa de albondigas. Food is still good after the big move. Service is still friendly. But the new space is just big enough that the staff is spread too thin. Takes a while for someone to take your order. Food comes super fast, still. But it'll be awhile before someone shows up to give you the bill. Not a big deal if you're not in a hurry. but I'm sure they want to turn the tables. PS: they could use a bigger parking lot. read more

Salsa: gross. Mild Salsa: tastes like cocktail sauce. Flank steak fajitas taste like a Cinnabon and the rice is hard and clumpy. If you like this place you have no idea what good Mexican food is. I wish it was better since it's so close to home. read more

Bland plain and nothing special. Way over priced for the quality of food. Sent my 10yr old to buy nachos and they over charged him. Pretty sad they are still in business, as there are plenty of true authentic Mexican in town worthy of your tummies. read more

Just left this place. Got a horrible waiter. Charged us a gratuity fee for 4 adults and 2 kids. I asked if i could have my kids food split into 2 plates and he said ill just give you 2 plates. He was rude the whole time. ddnt check to see if we needed anything until we were almost all done eating. Took all of our plates and waited about 10 mins and we had to go get him to give us our check. Walked up to him so i can sign the reciept and he walked past me to give the reciept to my wife. We're from Southern California where Mexican food is excellent - El Caporal is "honky" Mexican food. There is nothing memorable about their food. They are lucky there aren't many good Mexican restaurants in Bend. They'll survive because Bendites don't know true good Mexican food. read more

Tasteless dinner and horrible margaritas made with bad mix and very little tequila. We had soggy chimichangas and undercooked chili rellenos. The guy behind us said his drink was unidentifiable as a margarita. We told the manager the food had really gone down hill. She said there had been no changes even though our previous experience was much better. We won't ever return. read more

This is the ONLY place we go for Mexican food in Bend, and we go there once a week on average. The service is incredibly fast and the food is great! The cocktails are some of the best in town as well. The staff is friendly and efficient; they remember us and our preferences well enough that they don't need to ask us for clarifications. Because this location isn't directly on one of the major arterials in Bend, we get the impression that it's mostly local folks who patronize this tucked away place. The atmosphere and decor is typical, in a good way. Also - good to note that their restaurant inspection scores done by the County are better than many places in town - a bonus in my book. All around, one of our favorites! read more

The margaritas taste like countrytime lemonade.... they claim to be made from scratch. There were five of us and we all ordered different kinds of margaritas and they all tasted the same. The food was average, nothing special. Have yet to find a place in Bend that makes a great margarita. read more

This is one of the better Mexican food places in bend. It certainly isn't authentic, so if that's what you're looking for I'd try somewhere else. However, I think most Mexican food places around here are mediocre at best. They've always provided excellent customer service and the food has always been good and hot. read more

Arrived at 2pm. Hostess in middle of empty dining room talking on phone. She walks to us grabs two menus and walks away no eye contact and did not speak to us. We followed just because we felt we should. She continued with an obvious personal conversation. She set the menus on the table and walked away still without acknowledging us. The salsa and cabbage was very good. The rest of the food a definite two star. Waitress a two and half star. Hostess 0 stars. Amazing service. Above all the food is delicious. Being a vegetarian had a lot of choice. Would recommend any day of the week.

I'd have to say the food is mediocre. I've been to both locations in Bend. La Rosa is more on par with good authentic Mexican. Baltazar's is definitely the best of the bunch but you're gonna pay for it. read more

I will have to agree with Gerry on this one, although mediocre may be a compliment. We decided to try it one night for a quick bite in the bar thinking it would be your standard Mexican fare and could end up being one of our constant go-to's (Seattle-ites think Azteca). It wasn't even that good. The chips were stale. The salsa was so-so. I had the chicken taco salad and Al had the espresso taco salad. The chicken was overcooked and there was hardly any flavor to speak of. The service was fast, but it felt like they just wanted us to hurry up and get out of there. There seemed to be a lot of locals in the bar and even a group of women playing cards, but we couldn't see why unless all they were doing was drinking. Unfortunately for this establishment, we won't be back and we won't be able to spread a good word because there aren't any. read more

Don't bother. When the new restaurant opened, it was terrific. But our last 3 visits over 3 months have ensured we'll never go back. The food was bland. Once our order was delivered, we never saw our waiter again. If we were there when El Cap was slammed, I'd be more understanding. But each time there have been only 2 or 3 small tables in our section and other servers are standing around talking with each other. We're now driving to El Rodeo where the food is flavorful and it is obvious our patronage is appreciated. read more

Hostess was great. Got seated and received chips and salsa within a minute. For the next 25 minutes we waited for a server to take our order. Unbelievable....25 minutes! After taking our order the food came out pretty quick. Server never came back around to check on us. I noticed the people sitting next to us were waiting forever for the server to collect their payment . So I decided to take my credit card out and put it on the table so that when the check arrived I could just give him my credit card. Server eventually came by...never gave us the check....just took the credit card. Really? Was by far the worst service I had ever experienced. We have been here several times. Food is okay considering there really is no good Mexican food in Bend. The service is always below par. All the servers seem miserable to be working there. I have never seen any of them actually crack a smile. read more

Horrible place. Forgot my beer. Furthermore, my wife is allergic to dairy products which we mentioned to the waiter multiple times. Guess what...sour cream under the lettuce and avocado. When we told the waiter, he told us that he specifically told the cooks to scoop out the sour cream. Seriously??? The food itself is mass produced and subpar. read more

I'm sitting here eating my leftovers from El Caporal for lunch and decided to say a few words about this lovely looking Mexican restaurant. This was our second visit and I was much happier on this visit. The first was just beer and appetizers. No problem it was filling and fast and OK. But I intended to give them a real try on the second visit. All Mexican restaurants, in my book, are judged by their Rellenos and yes this one passed. Large peppers that are cooked perfectly and filled with you choice of meats. Next tacos must be right, crispy & good shredded beef and I was happy! Last are the enchiladas, always filled with ground beef, cheese and a great sauce! Oops where's the sauce? I asked our waiter and he didn't seem surprised but said he'd bring me more sauce. I waited & waited but the sauce came too late so I didn't finish my very dry enchilada. BTW another import part of a good Mexican restaurants are the margaritas and so I tried the happy hour house margarita and should have had a beer. My husband tried the El Caporal margarita and was very happy. Overall I'd go back for a good margarita, tacos, great rice, rellenos & a nice environment. read more

Usually, I LOVE El Caporal. Today, my pregnancy craving had me desiring a crispy, hot, Asada Quesadilla! Instead, I got a yucky, soggy, cold wet tortilla, cheese, and meat "quesadilla." When I picked up my food to go, it was super soggy. Whoever boxed it up to go put a heap of lettuce underneath as well as a large dollup of sour cream and guacamole. Now, don't get me wrong; I LOVE sour cream and guacamole, but on a TOGO quesadilla, I expected it to be in a container on the side so that it wouldn't make my quesadilla soggy. Nonetheless, I didn't get to enjoy my quesadilla. It was gross, even worse, I paid $17.50 for this soggy heap of yuck. :-( read more

Food is good. Drinks are not very good but the service is really bad! Took 10 minutes to get water. Got our bill as we were eating which was good but then it took 15 minutes to have it picked up, finally hand it to someone and the our server brings us another bill.
