We ordered takeout we ordered two chaparral tostadas one pork one beef we got two chicken and the sauce the meat everything was so spicy hot. I ordered crunchy flour tortillas with cheese the cheese was so thick that it was greasy and tasted of soap. Even the guac was so spicy. I paid thirty dollars and it was total crap. The lettuce was wilty and soggy. Meat was in huge chunks. Not happy that is alot of money to throw away. This is the second time I have not been happy. I'm done. read more

Let's be honest...I got off the river late and with a solid buzz, to find out my lovely wife wanted to borrow my truck for some wild CL goose chase. I grabbed a road soda and tagged along for the ride, giddy up! We ended up at the new El Caporal out of necessity, a place that we had honestly already sworn off as the typically bland CO Mexican-American fare. Turns out we were dead wrong and in for a real treat! Yahoo for Billy! I started things off with a habanero margarita, which I thought was pretty legit, could have been the beer talkin' My wife had the spicy shrimp in red sauce, which was cooked to perfection and very tasty. I ordered a combo plate with a chile relleno, beef tostada and chicken enchilada My combination arrived on a huge platter with rice and beans, I was impressed with the large portions. I found every item to be very authentic and flavorful...where you been all my life baby!? The salsa was great and the tortilla chips flowed all night! We've been going to this place for a while, we loved it. Until today. To start with our server was rude, which we thought that was just how he was. Then we noticed he was treating other customers better and he was being rude to us in general. After a while of waiting, we received our food. My little sister was half way through her hotdog when we noticed the bun had MOLD!! When we called the server to let him know, he seemed annoyed and rolled his eyes thinking we wouldn't see it. Loved the food and waiter . All that was great . Why I didn't give them 5 stars ? I ordered 1/2 order of deluxe nachos as a meal off the appetizer list . It was 8.00 for 1/2 order without meat . Meat with the choice of pork , chicken , shredded beef or burger , 1.50 extra . The problem was when I requested shrimp instead of the other meat options . The waiter said , yes no problem , but it will be a small amount higher then the other meat choices . I said no problem as I wouldn't have imagined , 4 shrimp the size of quarters being too much more . He didn't specify " that small amount higher " We got the check , and I was like WOAH ! We were charged the difference of 8.00 plain for deluxe 1/2 order , to 17.95 for 1/2 order deluxe nachos with (4) shrimp !!! I felt entrapped . For another dollar , I could have had another fancier item off the menu with prawns , and probably more then 4 ! Also their was barely any refried beans on the nachos . Beans are inexpensive! One tiny bowl of the beans was expensive @ 1.00 to dip our chips in while we waited for our dinner . Granddaughter had chicken fajitas which the meat was delicious . Can't complain at all about the food taste and quality , but the prices were pretty high , and the deluxe nachos with (4) shrimp was OMG ! That was icing on the cake . They either need to tell you that small charge ( yah right ) ahead of time , so we could have decided if an 8.00 nacho order was worth turning into 17.95 ! Totally redundant " up charge " . Do not waste your time or money here! I went with my son this week for a birthday dinner and had less than great service and the food was not as good as the last time I went. I ended up getting food poisoning within hours of eating- And spent 12 hours vomiting. I called the next day- I also work in food service- And was told a manager would call me back- never happened. I called again- because in the very least- a manager should talk to me. I was told that if I didn't go to the hospital- I wasn't sick. Well- yeah- I was. Incredibly rude! Very disappointing, in both the food and the service, It wasn't busy and it was early evening. We assume the waiter must have been new and never worked before. He definitely needed training in every aspect. We received stale chips and bland salsa. When the food arrived it was cold. The chicken enchiladas were bland with minimal sauce, the tostada was only refried beans, lettuce and some tasteless cheese. This is where my mother in law wanted to go for her birthday dinner. We are from southern California which has some great Mexican food so we have high expectations when it comes to Mexican food. So first they put this cabbage mixture on every plate. Not sure what that's all about but not everyone likes it, it should not be put on the plates all over the food. We had some guacamole which was an avocado mixed with what seemed like an entire onion. It was more like onions with avocado. My son ordered a Colorado burrito, he said it was small compared to our normal place and just ok. My husband said the same about his Colorado. I had the Sopitas and they were average. The rice was undercooked and the cheese on the beans was a big hard solid mess. My father in law ordered 2 tamales and an enchilada. They served him only one tamale and an enchilada. He also asked them to be sure he got pinto beans not black beans. We all got served refried beans but they gave him frijoles de la holla, he was irritated with that. Well I had an lunch apt for work and we planned to have a few drinks and after the meeting lunch. We were not there for more than 30 minutes and the waiter was rushing us to order which we ended up doing and let our meals sit for 10 minutes and grow cold. We ended up moving outside because we felt like we were being pushed out. This is one of my favorite Mexican Restaurants in Bend. Frankly, Bend has a LOT of great Mexican restaurants, but I really like this one. This visit I tried something new. I wanted some spicy chicken flautas and they had them but they were served with a cup of habanero sauce which was a bit TOO spicy so I asked if they had any chipotle sauce and they brought me s bottle similar to a Tabasco sauce bottle. Very dark brown liquid but just the right amount of heat. Kinda hard to shake out any drops but worth the effort. I only wish the portion size was a little bigger. We ordered take out and were STARVING! We called in our order and when we got it home, none of our food was right. My dad ordered a steak dish that was supposed to come with melted cheese, mushrooms, and other toppings which he did not receive any of the toppings. My mom and I both ordered shrimp enchiladas, we received crab enchiladas. The food tasted good because we were tired and hangry, but it was very disappointing to not get what we ordered and paid for, I.e. all the toppings my dad should have received for his steak dish. Affectionately referred to as El Cap East by locals, this place can be a challenge to find if you aren't familiar with the area. See my previous review. It's been a few years since I wrote a review, but our frequency in dining here hasn't changed. Averaging several visits a month, our group of friends goes back and forth between here and El Rancho Grande up at Cascade Village Mall. Same can be said for both places (and El Rodeo) that the food is all similar in price, quality, quantity and selection. The service is always friendly and attentive. This is Mexican in Bend. Read my tirade about people bashing our local establishments in my review for El Rodeo. No need to repeat it here. I'm not going to say this, or any of the other places in Bend are THE BEST because they aren't. Service and food can be hit or miss but most times is spot on. Average Americanized Mexican fare. Midstream flavors, nothing really stands out but nothing was bad. Totally a place I'd come back to for a sit-down burrito or such. Our service was very nice. Beverage-refill gal was on top of it, got our plates cleared and watched in case we needed anything. It's the angry menu that got to me most. Cover starts off with something like "First basket of chips and salsa free, other's $1.50." Seriously, how many people eat Mexican restaurants out of house and home with chips?? Then the top of every section let's you know "No Substitutions". Really, you feel guilty asking for one little change before you've even had a chance to ask! Restaurants are, I'm sorry, the service industry. Now I'm not saying we have the right to go in and get peeved when a Mexican joint won't make us a Spring Roll, but lighten up a little Mr. Menu. Honestly, the request for one chicken & one cheese enchilada came with a super-big PLEASE! and a slight cringe ('cause Mr. Menu seemed pretty set on punishment). 2.5 Stars It's mediocre Mexican food but you may have a hard time finding something better here in Bend. My ground beef burrito came with a side of rice and beans and then a huge slopping of melted cheese, tomato, sour cream and guac on top. After adding in some hot salsa, it wasn't too bad. Texturally, the whole plate was mushy. The moms and her friend eat here a lot, one always gets the enchilada and the other gets shredded chicken wrapped in tortillas and then fried. At the end, along with your bill they bring out a piece of super fried tortilla chip topped with whipped cream and strawberry sauce. When I lived in Bend, El Cap had locations everywhere. Then La Rosa opened followed by Hola and they slowly became less popular. I always loved their spinach enchiladas and tableside guac. Well, even after 5 years of not living in Bend, El Cap remains one of the places I "HAVE" to eat at when I visit and guess what?! Those spinach enchiladas are still awesome as is the guacamole. Prompt and friendly service, great salsa and chips, but the rest of the food fell flat. Everything was bland - the slaw (served with chips) had hardly any flavor, my taco salad shell was delicious, but the pork and iceberg lettuce, teeny bit of cheese and a half slice of tomato inside was pretty dull. Perhaps if I'd paid extra for guac, but I didn't want the added calories of the sour cream, or the $2 extra in price. I lathered on some of the spicy salsa, and it improved somewhat. Hubby had the chicken mole, and it was just "okay". No "kick" to anything, and a little bland overall. The rice on the side was pretty good (typical Mexican style fluffy rice). Tortillas looked fresh. We didn't try the beans, but they look like the typical sloppy brown beans that most American Mexican restaurants prepare. I returned my order, requesting that I have my original order: chicken and steak mixed fajitas with bell peppers and onions with a side of rice and beans and the regular shit that goes on fajitas like lettuce, pico and sour cream. I didn't even ask for guacamole!! This $25 order took 3 managers to comprehend my order and 2 of them were English speaking. I explained my mixed fajita mixup in Spanish to the third manager. She brought back the same flank steak, uncut, with CARROTS, CELERY, and 1 sliver of an onion. At this point it was 8:50 and I was too hungry to care, so I made, using the step by step instructions that the 19 year old hostess explained to me for cutting up my own meat. This isn't a high end traditional Mexican restaurant but they are good at that middle of the road, predictable, slightly americanized Mexican food. We had friendly service that was fast and attentive. Food was mild so it took some Tapatio to spice it up but it tasted fresh and was what I expected. The décor is very cute! I really liked the dining area- it is bright and has great paintings on the wall. I liked the booths and sitting along the windows let in lots of light. The patio looked nice but it was a little windy so we opted for inside. My rating for a 2 is really based on the food. Our service was good and the ambiance was good but I think there is better Mexican food in Bend (even though I know the Mexican here isn't stellar). I liked the rice and the chips. The refried beans were bland. My cheese enchilada was fine but the sauce was pretty mild and not too flavorful. My daughter got the veggie burrito and wished the description in the menu had been more specific. It came with black beans inside as well as carrots and celery. It looked amazing but she found it not very tasty. My husband got the Expresso burrito with ground beef. The ground beef was in large chunks and was not seasoned well. The guacamole on each burrito was very plain and lacking salt and garlic. We didn't try the margaritas but the ones being taken to other tables looked really great. He was more interested in watching soccer and griping at the staff. But our waiter was on it. My husband and I both order things that were not on the menu, an the waiter did not seem to care. Finally went to the new location. Beautifully designed restaurant. Bar is totally separate. Lots of tables in the dining area. Ambiance is similar to old location but not as cozy. Menu has not changed. Food is the same...tasty. Grandeza Margaritas were good. Twice the price for the same amount of alcohol but, wow, they were good. Parking is a bit of a dilemma. Parking lot has only so many parking spaces and the side streets only afford a bit more. Could have been a bit better thought out. Plenty of servers. Very personable. Orders taken in good time and food and drinks arrived in good time and hot (or cold) as desired. I have considered El Caporal my go-to Mexican restaurant on the east side and I have no reason to change my mind. The food is good. The drinks are good. Would I recommend this restaurant?
