Food is bland. Service is awful. Price is ok. They always mess up my to go orders. I have to check it everytime. Normally they have to remake my order 2 or 3 times before I'm able to go. So if you are going to order a lunch and expect to be back with what you ordered within a half hour or 45 minutes, you were wrong and I'm sorry. Don't bother going to this place. read more

This was mine and my husband's first time to this restaurant and we were pretty excited because it was packed, we also had to wait 25 minutes to get a seat, but we thought "what the heck, at least the food will be good!" The staff was very friendly and accommodating and once we were seated we began to notice that for this to be a Mexican restaurant, none of the staff was. We brushed it off and was still optimistic. I ordered the Mexican sandwich and my husband ordered the combination platter. First the lady came out with a tostada with some melted cheese on it. We asked what it was since the menu said our food came with cheese nachos. That was it! A SINGULAR "nacho" with some cheese on it! Then our food came out, mine was literally two tortillas with a layer of puréed beans, some old rice that was mushy and hard at the same time and chicken with some type of gravy sauce on top! This is NOT Mexican food!!!! My husband said his food was so bad, he couldn't stomach to finish, and my husband ALWAYS cleans his plate!! The food was terrible, and maybe because we've just moved here from Florida and know good Mexican food, we are critical, I don't know. But this is bad, I would have rather just gone to Taco Bell! read more

I was not impressed with El Charro at all. I was told that the food was authentic, but it is not in the least!!! The side cheese nachos that comes with the meal was a joke!! It consisted of four tortilla chips on a plate with burnt melted cheese on them. The margarita basically tasted like a virgin margarita and the chimichangas I ordered were tasteless. The rice and beans were "ok." In additon, the food is overpriced, especially for the cheap quality. The only good thing about the restaurant was the waitress, who was very kind. My mother and sister were not impressed with their food either. We will not make another trip to this restaurant ever again and I wouldn't recommend anyone to eat here. read more

Absolutely horrible. We had a carry out order. The 'nacho' is a hard taco shell with shredded cheese that's only 50% melted. The beans still had the marks from the can on them. The rice had so much black pepper on it, we couldn't eat it! It's false advertisement to call this 'authentic Mexican food'! I was bummed because we had heard good things about the other locations, so maybe it's just the Macomb location that's this bad. read more

Over Priced and Under Par Let me first address "Over Priced" by stating that I am perfectly willing to spend good money for a good meal. However, that was not the case here. A family of four (2 adults, a 12 year old and a 14 year old) that orders no appetizers, 3 soft drinks, non-extravagant entrees (burritos, tacos... nothing even in the fajita or better category) and a small side of guacamole should not expect to pay $76 in a strip mall, chain Mexican restaurant. The same meal at a more authentic Mexican Village, just 5 or 6 miles down 21 Mile Rd. has typically cost us just over half of that (in the $40 range) and would have far exceeded the quality delivered here. Which leads me to address my "Under Par" comment. First, walking into a restaurant in a strip mall feels no different than walking into a cleaners, a hair salon or a dialysis center. I can more accept that for, let's say, a $35 coney island meal, but again, not for $76. So, when walking in on a Wednesday night at 7:00pm, we are greeted with a 20-25 minute wait. The wait was partially due to the fact that were at least 3 empty tables waiting to be bused at any time, but also because there were actually (for some reason) a number of other patrons willing to be duped out of their money. The ambience was fine. There were ceramic Aztec masks hanging above the tables, other Mexican decor, along with some not-so-Mexican decor, such as a large aquarium with tropical fish, more commonly found in a Chinese restaurant. But that was fine too, since the water was clean and the fish were colorful. And let me also say that the staff was pleasant and the waitress was attentive (always ready with a refill when we needed one). But the food,... in a word, was lousy. As is the case for most Mexican restaurants, your meal begins with a basket of chips and some salsa. The salsa was average, but the chips were literally right out of a bag. Not the homemade, warm nacho chips found at better Mexican restaurants. And the entrees came with salads, but they shouldn't have even bothered. These obligatory salads were small and unoriginal, reminiscent of the ones you'd put on your tray (or wouldn't put on your tray) in a hospital cafeteria line. But worst of all, the entrees were very disappointing. Ours contained ground beef and chicken which had very little taste, were topped with hardened, room-temperature cheese that had lost all its gooeyness by the time it arrived at the table from the microwave. To wrap this up, let me say that when the evening began, I was excited to drive up and try a new place, but as the evening progressed, I was more excited to drive away, never to return. read more

Not bad but I prefer the meat to be grilled and not shredded. Salsa and chips were good and so was the ground beef burrito. We went with a party of 5 at noon on a Friday and the restaurant was busy but we were seated quickly. The waitress was very good and fast. read more

Always have a good meal here. Puffy taco's are super as are the fajitas. Pricing is a bit high in comparison with some of our other favorite Mexican places and the menu is smaller. Great place for carry out on busy week nights especially if you have a favorite. Many of the dishes use the same sauces so they are all very closely related but good all the same. read more

We hadn't been in since the remodel and just recently visited. They sat us a family of 5, right in front of the doorway where the staff walks in and out of...there were plenty of other tables available so I would assume this should be the last table seated? It was frustrating because it was so busy right by where we sat. Our waitress wasn't that friendly but she was good at what she did. The food was OK but not what we are accustom to when we come here. Not sure we will be back. I am hoping this was just an off day...but I would suggest seating that table as a last resort. Too crazy for those who pay $65 for our meals that want to relax while there and not constantly have people walking around our table. read more

Good place, but not a must eat. Best things in the menu are botana, super nacho, and tortillas soup. Feels like a family restaurant inside with lots of TVs. Don't expect the "best" food or service. Again, good just not great. Oh and skip the old world sauce which is salty brown gravy. Helps keep the dry food moist but ruins the flavor. read more

You have to try the soft shell tacos. They are fantastic. The Macomb location has great food just like the original in Fraser but the I've never had to wait at this location. This place is well worth the travel from anywhere in Metro Detroit. read more

We went to El Charro after reading some Yelp reviews. Maybe it's because we've lived in the south for the previous 18 years, but the food was incredibly bland, almost as if they had to "Midwest" their food. Chicken burrito was just chicken wrapped with flour tortilla. Beef enchilada was just like the burrito, just meat. Retried beans and rice okay. Chips not warm but one of the salsas was good. My wife poured the salsa over her enchilada to give it some flavor. She also added it to the puffy taco that the restaurant claims as their signature dish. Like the burrito and enchilada, the tacos were boringly bland. We like the much more flavorful Mexican food we ate in many restaurants in Louisiana, Mississippi and New Mexico, I guess Tex-Mex and Mexico City cuisines are for us. The people were phenomenal. Wait staff fast and courteous and either the owner or manager very friendly and welcoming. If our decision to eat somewhere was based solely on how inviting a place was, we'd go there all the time. Been eating at El Charro for many years. The last three times the food has been bland and not the same. Service touch and go. It's a shame.

The food here was good, but underwhelming in certain aspects. I ordered the chicken burritoes for 13.99. Although the chicken was well seasoned and highly flavorful, the burritoes were only rolled up with a tortilla covered in this nasty oozy cheese. The beans were on a similar quality with taco bell, highly processed and pastelike. The rice was decent, and the alsa was quite good, but the side salad was very plain. Although the serving staff were polite and helpful, the manager seemed annoyed and told me to leave if I kept bothering him because it was past closing. This conduct is unprofessional in its essence, but the staff seemed more than competent. Although the food is quite standard, it would be a better choice to go to a taco bell or chipotle if you are crazing some Mexican food as their food is cheaper and more tastier. The staff seemed real nice, which convinced me to write it as 3 stars. read more

LOVE El Charro. BEST Mexican food in Macomb county, hands down. I have been eating at the Fraser and now Macomb locations for years. and I'm never ever disappointed. My father worked for a mexican company and traveled to mexico a lot, and he finds their food to be very authentic. From their salsa, rice and beans, to their enchiladas, burritos, chimichangas, chiles relleno, mexican pizza and unique soft shell tacos (of all varieties, including the mahi mahi fish tacos), their food is consistently deliciously good. You can't go wrong with any of their meals, and you get a ton of food with your meal. I would agree that the Macomb location has super fast service, which makes it very family friendly, and with a 3.5 year-old, I like that. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves good Mexican food! read more

Thank goodness I live 2 miles away from El Charros because I order carry-out from this place at least once a week. Their soft shell taco is amazing, its like no other soft shell you have had before. Huge portions and is as authentic you can get with American owners! Highly recommend! read more

From where we live it's about a 1/2 hour drive but sooooooo worth it! The chips & salsa are always great & the food comes so fast! Will be back soon! One of my favorite restaurants around there ! read more
