The only reason i gave it one star is because the bartender made me a great piña colada with no alcohol and i have to give a star in order to rate and to review. Service was horrible they forgot to put in my order only my boyfriends order came out which makes no sense. Never put in our appetizer, never brought us our drinks, like how do u forget the entire order but one thing? Two friends and I came here a while back to experience what another review website (whose name we need not mention here) called "The best restaurant in LA." While I cannot flat out agree with that assessment, now that I have tried this restaurant, I must say it is perhaps the best sit-down Mexican restaurant LA has to offer. We have been going to El Compadre for years. It has great ambiance--the quintessential old school LA Mexican restaurant. They have a classic menu and the food is solid. The flaming margaritas are great albeit on the small side. Unfortunately tonight the service was atrocious. The bus boy spilled the dish of salsa all over me. He was apologetic and helped clean up but they didn't offer anything for the screw up. It took the waiter over twenty minutes after we set down to come take our drink order. When we finally ordered food I ordered a cup of albondigas and specifically asked that they bring it before my meal. They brought it with the meal. My wife ordered her fajitas without beans. They brought it with beans. A really off night for El Compadre. Totally disappointing. read more

We just stumbled in here for drinks as our dinner spot was not open and they provided great service and free chips and salsa with our drinks. Waiter took our order on a napkin and never returned for 45 minutes. We saw him at the bar chatting it up while new customers were being served immediately with mixed drinks when we ordered bottled drinks. HOWEVER the busboys did amazing and served us chips and salsas and water and consistently served us better than our waiter (who never gave us his name or order and looked under the influence). I ordered a cheese and rajas tamale plate with rice and beans. The tamale was wet and soggy, with barely detectable filling (occasionally I would find a tiny red circle of pepper). The beans were standard-issue Mexican restaurant refried, but had WAY too much cheese covering them, a whole layer, like there was supposed to be a quesadilla and they forgot the tortilla. Rice wasn't great either - it was studded with soggy peas and carrots. However, I enjoyed the table chips and nicely spicy salsa, and the bites I had of my aunt's carnitas and my mom's chicken enchiladas were decent. Went to el compadre before dodger game . Waited 25 minutes before having to stand and search for a waiter. Ordered The Botana which was delicious as always. When asked for bill the waiter came with his hand held bill payer with just the amount (no itemized bill) we asked for the itemizations and found that the double vodka we ordered was $53.00. I showed the waiter and he recalculated the bill. I then notice the 2 glasses of wine I order was $40. The waiter said they charge 20 a glass. I still think that was an error. At any rate, we paid and left. Long story short, don't trust their calculations, I think they try and charge extra without showing the itemizations. The 1 star is for the food. We went on a Sunday night. From the minute we drove into the parking lot to when we closed the door of our car to leave, we received the kindest and authentic welcome, service, and send off. This place felt so inviting. They had an incredible Mexican band playing. The food is top tier. The parking attendants were kind (and hilarious). The hostess was attentive and sweet. The server was a young man who you can tell steps outside of his comfort zone to connect with customers and provided incredible service. He recommended the lobster enchiladas and when I tell you THERE WERE NO REGRETS... I mean it. It was delicious, savory, rich, creamy it came with rice and corn that was absolutely delicious. There were other complimentary sides but I devoured everything so quickly I don't even remember. My family had fajitas and they were amazing. Great quality beef. The Micheladas were ok but I know they're famous for their margaritas. We were taking it easy. Queso fundido and their chips and salsa disappeared at our table within 5 solid minutes. Everything was great. I will always be back when in LA. Also! Loved that I could speak both English and Spanish with everyone there and the decor was so traditional and cool. Great place. read more

Great spot for drinks and a quick dinner before going to a Dodgers game. I had the house margarita to start, and then switch to beer as I didn't like the margarita quite as much as the Cadillac margaritas I make it home. My Fiancée and I shared a chimichanga, and that was delicious! We've been here a few times over the years, If you are planning to go on a Dodgers game day, make sure to get there around three hours prior to opening pitch. What is the notion of making mole sauce with candy bars--I always thought it was unsweetened chocolate that gave the sauce its flavor? It's six hours later, and I have an incredible case of heartburn. Was it the over seasoned Spanish rice, the overcooked chicken enchilada, or the fact that I ate too late? A stomach load of questions to justify what should've been a simple and delicious meal. I'll stick to the original proverb: "In truth, whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well; and nothing can be done well without attention." This classic and traditional Mexican restaurants is one of my favorites in Los Angeles, and everything a Mexican restaurant should be. Classic options, strong drinks, casual service. Hands down my favorite Margarita in town, the Flaming Margarita. They can also do this in a "skinny" version which all my LA peeps love! Crispy Chicken Taco, an absolute favorite here. Traditional, crispy, served with lettuce and cheese. Guac is Guac, and this is pretty solid here. Rice & beans, so much better at this location compared to the Hollywood location.
