Recently visited with my family and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd never been to this L.A. classic before and immediately saw what everyone was talking about. Classic L.A. Mexican restaurant with excellent food, strong margaritas and great ambience. The food was served piping hot. Delicious and fresh guac made to order. Crispy beef tacos that were delectable. No complaints whatsoever. Definitely making this apart of my routine when I want Mexican food.

As soon as you walk in, the vibe is amazing--live music and that classic old-school Mexican restaurant atmosphere. The only thing I'd mention is that parking is in the back, but the host stand is in the front, so it felt a little awkward walking through the restaurant to check in. The margaritas were on fire--literally! One of the staff members (I wish I remembered his name--it started with a D) was super energetic and checked in on us every 30 minutes. The waitress was also super friendly and positive. The whole staff had such great energy--it was truly a vibe. The food was good! The chips and salsa were so good, I think I filled up just on those. I loved everything about this place. I'll be back! It's right next to Dodger Stadium, so it's the perfect pre-game stop for a drink. I also really appreciated the family-owned feel.

Menu

We have been coming to the wonderful establishment for about 20 years now! And it is hands down our favorite restaurant of all time!!! The place has a home feel, the service is on point, always making sure you have fresh chips n salsa or refilling your cup with water or soda. The alcoholic drinks are top notch especially there flaming margaritas. And the food is just like mom or grandma use to make. You cant go wrong with whatever you choose to eat? The Pollo ala plancha is a always a good go 2! or the shrimp cocktail, steak salad or my favorite? Then padrino It comes with a steak an enchilada, hard shell taco, with rice and beans. The price for everything is responsible, not expensive at all. Come on down for some of the best authentic Mexican food echo park had to offer.

Was here last week with a friend, nice little spot pretty busy. It was really loud as they had a group singing and playing instruments so you are pretty much yelling so you can hear when speaking. The drinks were really good and the food was okay. Parking is $5 bucks Ill probably be back For the vibes and drinks maybe not for food. Shou out to our server really nice and attentive Santiago

I've been coming here for years and absolutely love each visit. Many memories made here in those big comfortable red tufted booths! The staff are friendly and make you feel like family. The food is delicious! Tasty chips and salsa, legendary margaritas (on fire), and a huge menu that's sure to please everyone. My favorite dish is the lobster enchiladas. El Compadre is a Los Angeles gem.

El Padrino combo

Went to El Compadre after taking a tour of Dodgers stadium. The restaurant has an old time feel to it. The lighting was very dim and hard to see menu. But the staff was very friendly and brought our drinks along with salsa and chips right away. I ordered the "El Padrino" combo. It came with a grilled steak, crunchy beef taco, cheese enchilada, rice ,beans , and guacamole. The food was really good and recommend you stop by if you're in the area. It has a small parking lot in the back. Luckily it wasn't busy when we went.

Came to try the famous Marg's!

Honestly not great. Chips and guac were subpar. Tacos also not great. Best part was the staff. Don't recommend if you like real Mexican food

The fried burrito wasn't any good. I wouldn't come here for the food but they have live music could be a fun place to get drinks.

Indoor and outdoor seating available, Bar Henry is a cool little for in Echo Park serving up tasty cocktails in a friendly, local feeling environment. We tried a few cocktails when we visited. The Butthole Surfer is their version of a pina colada which, while decent, could have been a little more flavor forward. Feel it is premade in batches as I didn't see it made fresh but was brought getting the back, but still decent. The Lucid Dream had the smokiness from the mezcal posted with the mandarin, but then the rosemary comes in and helps add a little balance to the drink. The Swimsuit Edition was more flavor forward, but the passion fruit didn't necessarily pop in the drink for us. And finally was the Snitches Get Stitches, another mezcal drink with mango and horchats. Interesting was my first thought, then you start getting the nuances of the different interested and it's a respectable cocktail. Overall, good drinks, friendly people, chill atmosphere, and a nice addition to the bar scene in Echo Park

We decided to get a drink to celebrate Father's Day, only to strike out at the first two bars we tried--I guess a lot of places are closed at 9:30 on a Sunday. This is how we ended up at Thunderbolt, a buzzy bar in Echo Park, just far enough away that we'd never made our way over. I loved it immediately. Thunderbolt has the friendly, comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood bar and the hip aesthetic and high-level cocktails of a millennial boozer destination. (Not that young people can't or shouldn't hang out here, but it seems especially geared toward people like us, who drank at Walker Inn a decade ago.) We ended up sitting next to a guy who regularly drives up from Palos Verdes. I guess the place gets pretty busy, but it was ideal on a Sunday night. Happening but not crowded, with just enough space at the bar for us to grab two seats together. The bartender was great, super helpful and welcoming. He also made excellent drinks. Thunderbolt is one of those bars with an encyclopedic illustrated book for a menu. Not a long menu, just a detailed one, with a lot of information available about each drink. We got a Liquid Picnic and a Barcelonnette--just one round to close out the weekend. Both were delicious. The Liquid Picnic was a smooth, savory gin martini made with London dry gin, tomato, citron, vermouth, rosemary, and black pepper. I learned from the book that it used clarified tomato water. (There was also further reading about the clarification process.) The Barcelonnette was a mezcal sour with Suze, passionfruit, and lime, the foam made without egg white through some geeky mixologist process. Thunderbolt is not our neighborhood bar, but we plan to go back when we can to check out the rest of the menu. It's a wonderful place, well worth a jaunt on the freeway.

We let the bartender know that we don't drink and she offered to make these ice cold tea drinks and she killed it! Whatever she made, refreshed the hell out of me and I loved it! She was pretty chill and made us feel welcome. There was another gentleman there that took our food orders and I'm not sure if he was another bartender or the owner, but he was pretty chill, too. We didn't want to be in the way at the bar with all of our food while everyone was having a good time, so we moved to a table. People were having cold ones and dancing. It was good to see everyone enjoying themselves! I told yall---vibes! Little did we know at the end of the bar is a whole dining area! This joint was pretty big! So that's where you would pick up your food. When I tell yall we ate it down, we ate it dowwwwwnn! We ordered a half shrimp/half oysters po boy, fried pickles, charbroiled oysters, wings, and I forget what it was called but we had another po boy with everything from shrimp to gator....washed it all down with a cold Dr Pepper..don't hate. lol They already had me on the fried pickles, so I don't know what else to tell you except not to sleep on this place!****sings I'm going going, back back, to Cali Cali***

To end the night before we headed off to dinner, we stopped by The Semi- Tropic bar for drinks. The parking situation was difficult to say the least-- there is no street parking or parking lot. And the neighborhood behind the bar is filled with park cars. We were lucky and parked at a parking lot that was for the surrounding business (so sorry to the pizza/ weed shop!). We arrived at around 6:30 PM so it wasn't too busy. We were greeted by one of the servers and she gave us options to either sit at a lounge table area or hightop tables. We opted for the hightop tables because we knew we weren't staying there for long. The server was friendly and patient as we looked over the menu for drinks. I've been sober for about a year so I only had water, my boyfriend ordered a Naoshima Dream, his cousin ordered a Mango Cart, and his cousin's girlfriend ordered a Lemon Drop Martini. The bar was super cute and hipster! I honestly would have loved going to this bar back when I used to drink. It's dimly lit, had a vintage 20's speakeasy feel to it and the music was a vibe. I'd recommend coming here for a little date with your partner or even coming with a group of friends. My boyfriend had been here once before and he said the food was really good and affordable. He had a panini and said for bar food it was a 10/10. We waited maybe like 10 minutes for our drinks to come, we were having such a fun time chatting and enjoying the environment that it didn't feel long at all. My boyfriend, his cousin, and his cousin's girlfriend really enjoyed their drinks. They said the drinks tasted "light" insinuating that there was barely any alcohol in it. Don't let the taste fool you, after finishing half of their drink there were full of smiles, giggles, and had a great buzz going. The prices here were all pretty fair for the cost and quality of the drinks. Would defintely recommend coming here for drinks and dinner for a date night or a night out with friends!
