We are supporting our local restaurants during the coronavirus shut-down and enjoyed a fabulous take-out meal tonight. The mixed green salad was creative and delicious with dressing thoughtfully provided in a separate container. We ordered the taco plate - one each of six varieties. Each taco was loaded with meat and slaw; we could finish only half of them. We topped it off with the churros and caramel sauce - yummy! Four stars instead of five only because of a mixup in the pickup time. The food was excellent and helped make a lonely night at home special. Thank you EDK! read more

A small gathering of family and friends to celebrate my mother's 98th birthday. A larger table in the center of the dining area was set for 10. Our waiter was "on it" from start to finish. Friendly, ready with recommendations and precise with his timing. Appetizers included the tuna tartare and ceviche - sublime. Entrees varied down the table and all were quite pleased with the presentation and flavors. Duh! I forgot to order a cake. Not a problem. Two to three servings of three different desserts caught the attention of a rather discriminating Berkeley restaurant group. Nice work and thank you to all on the floor and in the kitchen. El Dorado kitchen opened around the same time I move to Sonoma 2000. Earlier this year another concierge and I and his lovely wife but there for dinner. I have a problem with restaurants to stop taking care of locals well. The count on tourism to make their business, and then there some kind of crash in the financial marketAnd they start scrambling to be nice to locals again. I won't go across the street to girl and the fig because they haven't learned their lesson yet. El Dorado kitchen made a point of taking care of lot locals. The service was immaculate, and I can comment on that since I grew up and find restaurants. I worked for the general counsel at the British consulate in my early 20s and was trained to serve the queen. The food was spectacular the service immaculate and friendly. I'll certainly become regular in this lovely restaurant. From a native Californian, who moved to a sleepy little village, Griffin Santa Cruz where people were nice to each other. Our family moved here because I was on the road all the time driving back-and-forth between San Francisco and Sacramento. Remember the first day I went out and came to a four-way stop sign, every direction was filled, one of the women was standing outside her car talking to the woman at the other stop sign. When I drove up they all started laughing and running to their cars and then they all started waving me up. I knew I'd move to the right place, I needed a home. If you're from out of town come join us at the Eldorado kitchen, if you're dying to eat pretty good food and it's super crowded more like bucket list up, go to girl and the fig. I wish I could say I enjoyed EDK since I was looking forward to dining there for a while. But if I said that, I'd be lying. When I arrived a little early and checked in, the hostess was really snappy and unpleasant. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated even though the house wasn't full. Our server wasn't very friendly either which was a let down. Having worked in the service industry, I expect more from the front of house at a nice restaurant regardless of the day or time. It's common sense, it's a face forward industry! Something about living in the bay area really draws me to the seafood selection on fine dining menus. Unfortunately, the alaskan halibut I ordered tasted like...nothing. The description on the menu was enough to get me excited for dinner but the first bite was more than enough to let me down. I'm not sure if it was just an off night but I do know it wasn't just the fish. My date ordered the short ribs and neither of us were impressed. The truffle fries on the side had no crispness and reminded me of a soggy drive through order. We skipped dessert and cocktails to go be had elsewhere but you wouldn't know it from the tab we paid. Truly overpriced for bad service and a bland, let down of a meal. Take my advice: hop over to The Girl and the Fig or LaSalette. The creme brulee at the latter was to die for and besides my lovely company for the evening, it was really the only think that helped cheer me up after an awful dinner at EDK. read more

My brother and I had a wonderful weekend anniversary celebration lunch at El Dorado Kitchen! What a surprise dining experience and superb service. We started with soups and I had the mussels/frites appetizer, while my brother enjoyed the seafood special of the day. The little dish of pistachios was nice and different than usual table fare. No wait for reservation seating, nice table setting, ambience, and what you'd expect at somewhere like the Ritz. Enjoyed it, no rush on a rainy day, and dessert was special. We will definitely return and look forward to perhaps staying at the hotel above the restaurant another long weekend. read more

What a fun trendy place. I recommend it. Order the lobster tail. Its cooked to perfection, with a warm lemon butter sauce. The meat is so tender its spreadable. The service was on point. I told the wait staff my husband and I were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary and they brought out complementary champagne, which was a sweet touch. It is hard to say anything but good things about this very nice spot. To begin with it has a nice style that accents its spot on the square. Variety is the spice of life and the El Dorado is a great place to go spice your life up at. The staff was very attentive and even though it was busy, my date and I felt the service was good and not rushed. Both of our cocktails were exceptional and quickly delivered (and then quickly consumed). Then the food arrived and we were in a little bit of consumption heaven. She had some wonderful pasta and I had a delicious bit of pork that was well cooked. We were very stuffed (good portion size) and unable to even try the dessert which was a shame. So why not a 5 star rating? For food spots I try not to toss them around like candy at a parade because I like to see consistency. But this spot is definitely a high end 4. With a few more visits like this one and I can easily see them getting a bump. read more

El Dorado is really wonderful. It's not a fancy schmancy spot - but the food is good and the service is great. You can grab a really well-rounded meal and enjoy some drinks and know that you're not going to break the bank. It's definitely not expensive, but it ain't cheap. on our way to fabulous auberge du soleil for lunch on their beautiful patio, we took a wrong turn as the gps unit was out of order. by the time the signs turned into 101 south san francisco, we realized that we were 20 miles off course. with only 30 mins left for lunch time seating, we headed towards sonoma. again, a little wrong turn and we were hot and hungry. my boyfriend called the el dorado and the front desk was so ever patient and guided us the whole way to the hotel. once in, the hostess who was on the phone quickly lead us to a lovely table and let the server know to take care of us. the ambiance was cool and cali chic. we shared the mixed greens with pickled pears and candied nuts. perfect for another scorcher even in the shade. the fried egg thin crust pizza was large enough to share for two. good but probably not the best pick for a hot day. instead, go for the gazpacho with tiger prawns and clams which was light and flavorful. do watch out for the garlic cloves. they are soft and delicious but pack some gum for afterwards. with the overpowering heat, we scouted inside to have dessert. the strawberry crepes with vanilla icecream was perfect. sweet, tart, and creamy. we left happy and well fed but not before...getting some directions. read more

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the restaurant star competition. At the break we watched as El Dorado Kitchen missed a full five stars by one so-so dessert and a terrible wine recommendation. Let's listen in as the judges analyze the decision: Judge #1: Such a heartbreaking lapse. Judge #2: I know, they had such promise. A hip, swanky interior. Mood lighting that was actually mood lighting as opposed to squint lighting. Some really nice menu options. J1: And don't forget that cute bartender from the short dessert-only program. Judge #3: You mean the one who relied on his dimples and let the other bartender do all the work? J2: He did not! He recommended some fantastic wines to go with the desserts! J3: Fine, fine - you're right. He did, indeed, select the perfect dessert wines. Too bad the S'mores Tart move was bungled so badly it set them back for the long dinner program. J1: That is true. If they had only nailed all the desserts. But that Tart - wow - that tasted like jello pie. Truly terrible for the price even if everything else was exquisite. J3: And let's not forget the fumble on the wine with dinner. J2: I know, I know. So sad. So heartbreaking! They started off so well with wonderful service, fantastic appetizers, and the mains looked great too. J3: All that falls away when all you can remember is being served a sweet German Riesling after describing your preference for crisp, dry whites. J1: Let's take a look at that again...yes, see? Right there - wrong footing and everything. And the recovery just wasn't there. Too bad. J2: Well, they always have the next trip to try again. This time, however, they lost that 5th star. I had a stage' here and it is very loud. The workers are rude, including the manager. While working there for a few hours, a couple of them were talking about customers and would say very inappropriate context about them. They also said they would get back to me but they never did and they never returned my calls nor called me just to at least give me an answer. read more

We are locals and have been going for years... A few reasons for the two stars; 1) they really need to come up with a better system for dealing with busy times... Hovering over tables in order to get a seat in the bar area is neither fun or relaxing for either the party sitting trying to enjoy themselves or for the people waiting... Maybe try a paging system or ?? We have seen numerous altercations that are uncomfortable and unnecessary. 2) quality of food is inconsistent. 3) front house staff could be more professional. read more

Yesterday I tried EDK for the first time and loved it! the service was exception, the staff were very friendly and informative; and the food was amazing. I had the carpaccio and my friend had the ceviche. Both dishes were fresh and very tasty. We ended up sharing the jambalaya, which came recommended and was very very good. The jambalaya is not as big as suggested and in hindsight I probably would have ordered two entrees because the food is just so good. The wine recommendation was very good as well. Overall an excellent experience. read more

So loved the look of the place, loved the menu. Not sure if it was just a bad day for the kitchen, or if Friday Night isn't the best time to go. But we had some issues. My wife ordered a salad that was supposed to come with goats cheese, it had one tiny piece on it. She asked if that was normal for our server and he said no. He offered to get more cheese, but we declined and so removed it from out bill (great service). I had a watermelon and Belly pork dish, great flavors, but two pieces of the pork weren't rendered all the way through. Out two mains were excellent, but I did notice other tables returning food. Overall, a lovely place to eat, just missing on a few details. read more

We've visited the El Dorado Kitchen every time we've come to Sonoma. It's so delicious and never disappoints. The outdoor patio is super cute. The food is absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the tuna tartare as an appetizer. The carbonara and steak entree are both delicious as well. Wait staff is always friendly and they give great recommendations. I had a such a great experience here for a Sunday brunch sitting outside in the sun. We had the eggs benedict, prosciutto pizza, and french toast. The first two were definitely my favorite with the perfect flavors although I didn't care for the soft country potatoes that came with the eggs benedict. There wasn't anything remarkable about the french toast in my opinion so I could've definitely passed on it altogether. I loved how smooth the water was and that they filter and bottle on-site -- never thought I would comment on a restaurant's water until now. Service was absolutely excellent. Yum, is what I have to say about El Dorado Kitchen. We were a party of 9, all women; yes, it was a bachelorette party. A very well-behaved and quiet bachelorette party. I'm sure we struck fear into the staff when we arrived, because who wouldn't worry that 9 tiara-wearing ladies might ruin the atmosphere for all of the other customers' pleasant and tasty lunches. So with that picture painted, the service here was great. In fact, our server came over to tell us exactly how many more minutes we would be waiting for our next course to arrive. These were numbers like 2-3 or 6 minutes. So, I think you can say their service is like clockwork. The food was also great. As I just posted in another review, we liked it better than the Michelin star-holding Acquerello in SF. Here's what I ate: house-made charcuterie (my favorite was the ham hock rillette), roasted beet and goat cheese salad (yum! ...and pretty...the beets were cut and perched on top of little goat cheese mounds like the ramparts of a castle), gnocchi with mushrooms, squash, and leek cream (Mmmmm), and an apricot tart with brown butter filling. The rolls here are to die for. I was a tiny bit disappointed with the tart, as the brown butter filling was not what I had hoped for. But, we shared our desserts and I got to have some caramel from a s'mores tart (caramel is great, tart is too rich for me), a few bites of the vanilla crepes (Mmmm), and--my favorite--some of the vanilla panna cotta. The panna cotta was so good, and I'm glad someone ordered it, because I would never have picked it out on my own. It is excellent! read more

I did not have a good experience here. Even though every thing looks very fancy and delicious, I was not satisfied. I came here for my xmas dinner with a party of ten. We all shared appetizers and the best thing I had was the mac and cheese and the truffle fries. The other appetizers were very bland. Once we got our dinner, all of the steaks were rare and had to get sent back. I had a pasta and the noodles were so hard probably from sitting under a heat lap for too long. I want to clarify that this review is based solely on my only time dining at El Dorado Kitchen that happened to be on New Year's Eve. On New Year's Eve, EDK was only offering a prix fix menu that cost a total of $75 (no drink paring of any sort - just starter, entree and dessert). Here are my two complaints: 1.) The value was not there from a perspective of taste and plain logic. While they plated most of the items quite nicely... in general, the taste of the food we had was not as elegant or sophisticated as we had expected from what we had paid. Lastly, I noticed about half of the prix fix menu items were the same items they offer on their regular menu or pretty comparable... see below: http://imgur.com/AM4oVFO Yet, for some reason the NYE's menu overall ($75) was MUCH more expensive.... (again, see the above menu). I understand EDK reserves the right to make things more expensive on New Year's Eve, but it went too far and I simply didn't feel I got my money's worth. In hindsight, we should have looked at the prix fix menu before we booked our reservation - but I still think it was a poor call from management's perspective to have that NYE's menu so similar to their regular menu and at a way higher price point. 2.) My boyfriend and I ordered two different desserts and unbeknownst to us, it turned out they ran out of one. So when the desserts came to our table, we were puzzled on one of them. We tried both and then confirmed that one of them did not taste like what we ordered. We immediately asked our server after the first bite and she said "We ran out of the Coconut Tapioca dessert, but that one [the one they put on our table without even telling us it was a replacement] is much better". When charging $75 for 3 courses please do not put a replacement item on our table without telling us that it's a replacement item and also what the item is... esp. in this case whether it was "much better" or not, we would have probably ordered something different. Two stars because we were late to our reservations and they were still able to accommodate us. For being in Sonoma, I feel EDK is using San Francisco pricing too much as their comps and it is Sonoma not SF. If pricing is that high then service and expectations should be met. I think the menu would have been more reasonable around $60. Nothing was horrible but taking into consideration the price paid, value, and service the meal did not quite meet our expectations. read more

Came here for lunch on a Saturday. Since we made a reservation, we were seated promptly. Even though the wine list looked good, we declined because we were going to be drinking throughout the day. We started with the Burrata. It was an interesting but very good dish They served it with toasted baguettes the jam and accompanying sauce just brought it altogether nicely. The wife also had a couple oysters and said they were fresh and tasty. I had the fish and chips. The fish was fresh and nicely fried with a lot of flavor. I change the fries to truffle fries and they were quite nice. The coleslaw was a little too bitter for me. The wife had the pasta. She loved the sauce and the clams and the sausage and everything about it. Service was good and the dining room was nice and bright. I highly recommend this place in downtown Sonoma and would love to return some time soon. read more

We had an excellent dinner here, and I wish I had eaten here more than once on our trip. We sat outside on the patio, which was extremely pleasant, as the weather was great and it was nice and quiet. Everything on the menu looked good so we ended up going with the tasting menu, which was absolutely fantastic. It was just the right amount of food, dishes came out at a good pace, and everything was scrumptious. The wine pairings were OK, but one of the things that was really nice is that our server brought us each different wines with most of the dishes, so we got to try twice as many wines as we would have otherwise. Our server was very friendly, and she as well as the chef gave us a lot of information about each dish as it came out. I agree with Liz S's comparison to the Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg, which I also enjoyed. read more
