El Forastero I love you. The California burrito is pretty much the only thing I ever get. There is a difference in my experience between the service and quality of food depending on the time of day. During normal walk-in hours my burritos are piping hot and everything is very fresh. At 2:00 p.m. everything still tastes good but it's just not like it is during the day. During the day you can also get chips and salsa so it's best to go during this time. The staff are very nice and helpful. I have been here many times and they are always good, although they have gotten my order wrong just a few times, it's never anything that big; like a side of rice or no onions. One of the only places I get Mexican food in Sacramento! When I first moved to Sacramento this was the first 24 hour restaurant I discovered, aside from IHOP and Denny's. This place has saved my life so many times. not literally. well sort of. The place provides the freshest ingredients for a late night grub. Skip the fast food and the breakfast restaurants and come here to fulfill your hunger. Pico de gallo, rolled tacos with guac, soft tacos, shrimp burrito, green sauce, red sauce, and California burrito! Need I say more? If you happen to eat inside, free chips and salsa! The chips are divine simply because its not tough to bite on. Very thin and lightly salted chips and always kept warm. At least five different salsa to choose from and all are extremely flavorful with its own fresh taste. I love this place simply because its open 24/7. I don't mind driving pass four other twenty four hour fast food chains to get to here. Multiple times I've driven all the way from downtown. The service is excellent but sometimes the drive thru could get a little backed up and you can be in the drive thru for a minute or so but its only because every time I go to this place its after midnight and they have about two maybe three workers at a time. As you're waiting at the drive thru, just be warned and you can come back and thank me later, watch out for the homeless people roaming around. They're harmless but that's only because I roll up my window everytime they start coming towards my car in the drive thru. In my defense, they've asked me for money once before but instead of feeding their alcoholism by giving them money, I've bought them a burrito and taco. I know they don't remember me, and I'm glad or else they'd asked for a burrito every time I'm there and that' would be a lot of burritos! I stop here for lunch whenever I pass through Sacramento. My older son introduced me to this place when he went to school at Sac State. His roommates would go here in the middle of the night. They are open rather late, I presume. I just love their burritos, especially the super burrito with Adobada, which is marinated pork.... YUM! I tried the California burrito since I love french fries, but there are no beans. I would love to exchange rice for potato but Mexican food isn't Mexican food without the beans, at least for me. Maybe I will try again but ask for beans too. Their salsa is very good; four different types but I like the hotter red salsa the best. None are too hot. Sundays (I think) there is a almost free taco day. We came in for our usual and the guy in front of me told me about the deal. I think they were $1 each.... They were great. There usually is a sign out about the special of the day but maybe that special has become too popular, lol. There was no sign that day. I fed my younger son and his roommate (who are now going to school there) for the price of a burrito. Can't beat that! I did miss my standard AND my leftovers... but I will be back again. read more

Pretty damn good! 2 enchiladas plate and a horchata for me & my Lil one for breakfast. The enchiladas have red sauce...not sure if it is home made or not? A Lil darker than I prefer..but still good. My favorite part were the rice & beans. They were super fresh with a great consistency. Horchata was pretty good too! The 2 enchiladas, beans & rice servings took up the ENTIRE box..nice size portions..so why, oh why do you pile on more than a handful of shredded lettuce on top of my enchiladas? Eew! Leave that ish off next time (note to self* if I want to recover any of the sauce or shredded cheese on top of my enchiladas next time, ask for NO LETTUCE!) Other than this. Just be careful not to discover the tip of a syringe in your taco. I doubt it came from them, more than likely from the meat packing plant. My other rant is for the County Heath Dept and USDA who did absolutely NOTHING to deal with this, after many attempts. They are good people here and their food is OK..good place for lunch. El Forastero changed my life. It is the best authentic Mexican food in the Sacramento area hands down. Everything they have is nearly orgasmic, and their guacamole and cheese nachos are orgasmic! They load their carne asada tacos down with [carne asada], delicious pico de gallo and they are only 3.00! Their #25 Steak, egg, potato, and cheese burrito is the shit, especially for hangovers. NOT TO MENTION IT"S OPEN 24 HOURS!!!! Also try the flautas and chicken taco, pretty much everything on their menu is the BOMB. I eat here at least three times a week. Had the cheese in the enchiladas been thorough melted and hot, I would be raving about this place. The taste of the food was delicious: including excellent beans, rice, pico, and the green sauce on the side that was my choice. What I have eaten; 5 rolled tacos with guac. 3.00 stars. Nice taste,always crunchy,minus for not being hot enough when served. Regular ground beef tacos 2.50 stars. Taste just ok, they need to season ground beef (more ?). Combo dinners, 3.50 stars. Dinners portions are nice, I wish they had more combinations, they would really stand out if they added tamales. El Forastero cost less than Jimboys with a somewhat better taste. I like Taco Bell better because of the price. Mexican Fast food in Sacramento is just mediocre-average. I am giving only the food 4 stars. The service gets 2 stars for being friendly. They are sooo slow though. I have actually only been inside this place 1 time. All other times I go through the drive-thru. I come here because it's right down the street from my office complex. I have tried the tacos, enchiladas and burritos and all are yummy. I don't come here often though because I don't enjoy sitting in a drive-thru for such a long time that people turn off their engines for the wait. Today was bad because I was sitting at the order board for at least 5 minutes before anyone helped me and I was yelling for help. I don't know if they heard me and just ignored me or what. This place has a 24 hour drive thru. I came at 2:30 am and the line was 7 cars long. Prices are expensive compared to other late night mexican places, but I wanted to give this place another chance since it's around the corner from my house. When it first opened the wait was super long and everything we ordered was blah. This time the drive thru line moved pretty quickly. I ordered the carne asada fries before I checked the reviews. They turned out just okay. With tax it was $8.23. The guy working the window spoke English fluently which always makes ordering easier. While I waited in line I logged into their free wifi. I love free wifi! Got home and ate it all cause I was hungry, but the carne asada was not grilled. It appeared to be stewed or pre-cooked in a large batch and left sitting in a marinade/sauce because it was really salty and didn't have that grilled texture a good asada would have. The fries were the nice thick fries. It came with plenty of fries and guac, but no sour cream. They sent me home with lots of salsa too. But with this kind of carne asada I probably would not order it again. They put lots of meat on there and I had some leftovers, but I just gave it to my pups. From what I recall Beto's has better carne asada fries. read more

I keep forgetting that El Forastero is right around the corner from me. It's in a bit of an odd spot, so I guess that's to be expected. The biggest pull for me? It's open 24 hours. With a new baby in the house, food timing isn't always normal. And the food here is pretty tasty, though a bit unremarkable. I always have trouble remembering what I had the last time, because it just doesn't stand out. Am I ever offended by my food? Not at all! But it's not a place that I remember all that well. THE go-to latenight spot in this area. The carnitas are always on point. The carne Asada fries are a must try! The drive thru occasionally has a long wait so perhaps skip if in a taxi.
