Hidden gem! I'm from San Diego, so I'm always on the search for Tijuana style street food specifically: burritos / tacos. This was definitely really really close. They even have a "California burrito"! Although their El Gringo burrito was more similar to what a true California burrito is except you have to ask them to stuff it with fries. Their shrimp taco was delicious. Chipotle mayo sauce was good too and I loved that they have corn tortillas (Mexican style is corn and American style is flour). I was curious since I've read a few of the reviews about this restaurant. Well, I was in the area so I was going to try one of the lunch specials. I wanted the steak taco and chile rellano, but they were out of peppers. So, I got a chicken enchilada instead. The comb comes with beans of ur choice, and a small salad. The taco only has flavorless ground beef, did not want ground beef, language barrier! And the taco only had shredded American cheese, not Mexican cheese. My boyfriend and I were hungry when we got to town yesterday. I was craving Mexican food and did some searching for a restaurant not too far from our hotel. I came across this place and we decided to give it a try. When we parked, there weren't many cars around. As you'll find by the end of my review, this will come as a mystifying surprise. Maybe it was the day and time we came in that was less busy, but El Gallo Bar & Grill deserves to be popping with business! We opened the doors and stepped inside what had a "hole-in-the-wall" feel. Since the weather was nice, we asked if we could be seated on the outdoor patio. The host led us out back, which had bright pops of color all around. There was a very cute, fun vibe. I will say, since we were the only ones outside, it was a nice private dining experience. Our polite host told us our waitress would be with us in just a moment. He ended up bringing our chips and salsa to us and then our server arrived: Paola. Just like the host, she was very friendly and kind. I ordered 3 fried shrimp tacos (Mexican style), which came with a side of refried beans and rice. My boyfriend got 3 octopus tacos, also Mexican style, with a side beans and rice. The tacos looked gorgeous and tasted authentic and absolutely delicious! My shrimp was perfectly crispy and juicy. I was blown away by the explosion of flavor. They were very filling. If you like spice, I'd suggest asking for a side of their habanero hot sauce. It packs a ton of heat with great flavor. This place is a hidden(?) gem. If we lived here, we would be weekly patrons. Have been meaning to check this place out for a few weeks now as we've heard great things about it. Love Mexican food like many but authentic is key. I always rate Mexican restaurants on the little things too like how authentic and good their homemade salsa and pico de gallo is so let me tell you that this place delivers. I ordered the shrimp, fish and chicken tacos Mexican style with cilantro lime and onion. Wow, bloody wow. Their house made hot sauce just took them to another level. It's always great when you leave a restaurant and it feels like you have a circus of flavours going on in your mouth. This is one of them The prices are incredibly low, the drink selections abundant and the service was top notch. You also know they are good when you see the counter full of take out orders. The decor has prints/paintings from Mexico on the walls and the wall seats are lined with pillows adorning Sugar Skulls. The women's bathroom is beautiful, shiny crystal accents an almost every wall. It tasted as delicious as it looks :) Steak and chicken fajitas - came out sizzling hot as it should, this dish did not disappoint. "All Fajitas are cooked With Sauteed Onion, Bell Pepper, Tomatoes and served with Mexican Rice, and your choice of Refried Beans, Black Beans, Or Charro Beans. The guy at the counter grabbed it said he was all set....when he arrived home....yup....missing an a Entree!! Kept driving by waiting for them to open and when they did, I noticed the parking lot seemed full most days at lunch and dinner. If you want fresh, made-on-site tortillas and great food, this is for you! Everything on the menu looks great, and the 2 dishes we ordered were delish. They were fresh and crunchy like the salad which came with avocado, yummy!!! I had the chicken fajitas which was a large dinner portion. My husband had the fried flounder. I called them to order takeout and I was unsure of the menu since the place is so new. I asked them if they offered any vegan food & yes yes they do!! Veggies tacos & man were they amazing, flavorful and delicious! The only thing I think I wished they had was better vegan side options (or more sides in general) I asked if I could get a side of rice to try and unfortunately it's only served with chorizo (spicy pork sausage, so not very vegan friendly lol) But besides that the tacos were great & I can't wait to come back with friends bc the atmosphere inside is great, good vibes & music! Plan a visit to this awesome small business today! My son noticed this location opening on the way home from work and we decided to try it out. We moved here from California. The VERY best Mexican restaurant we've found in South Carolina is near Columbia so we're always hoping to find something local that tastes fresh and authentic. Taqueria El Gallo offers a total win. To get a feel for the menu, we ordered a chorizo quesadilla, chicken burrito, shrimp tacos, and carnitas tacos. EVERYTHING was delicious. Well I am glad that the other diners/reviewers had a nice experience. I was looking forward to trying it but what a flop. No beer or wine and you couldn't byob...no deal breaker yet. But they were out of chicken and said all there was was pork. The 'salsa' had cut up hotdogs in it and apparently seasoned with ketchup. No guacamole. Our waiter's priority was to hang out at the register w/ the cashier. This was a few weeks after they opened so hopefully things have or will improve. I've driven by this place since it opened and decided to give it a shot - and I'm glad I did. It was fantastic. I had 3 tacos (steak, carnitas, chorizo) American style with homemade tortillas. The tortillas were great - not too thin, not too thick. The steak was the highlight because it had a terrific grilled flavor. My only complaint was the chorizo was a little salty - it was still good, however. The queso was excellent. Better than what you find at most chain restaurants.
