Finally stopped in for a quick lunch after hearing about this place for over a year from our friend. Food was delicious and drinks were fresh and flavorful. Don't miss this stop. We had a couple of micheladas and shared the ceviche (best in sonoma county) and a Chile rellano. Have to come back to try the barbacoa enchiladas that walked by in our way out. Ok The carnitas nachos, amazing! But the margaritas, as cute and mouthwatering as they look are very sour. I got the passion fruit flavor so don't think it was that but I would def try a new flavor. It's still fun to get a margarita in a mason jar thru a drive-thru. The women that helped us was really nice to. The food was decent here. Definitely not my top pick for Mexican food, but okay if you don't want to leave Windsor. There is certainly better Mexican food in Windsor if you don't care to dine in, but not many nice dine-ins. With that said, the restaurant itself was nice. I loved the outdoor setting. We had a waiter and waitress tend to us. The waiter was kind, fun, and engaging--which is why I'm even giving 3 stars to begin with. However, the waitress didn't seem like she wanted to serve us. We asked for plates for our appetizers multiple times and were not given them until the fourth time we asked. Same with water--asked multiple times and just gave up, didn't have water with our meals, just cocktails (though I thought serving water before food was a common practice anywhere you go). Anyways, probably wouldn't choose to come here again because of the quality of food and service. However, I would come back for mixed drinks & the bar. read more

Well now they reduced the size of their tacos to street size. I am no way paying 4.50 for a street size taco. They now are charging for their chips too. I am so done with this place. Been coming for quite a while here as it was two previous names. Since it has been El Gallo it is the best. We had the Mole Burrito which was one of the best I've ever had. The different Margarita options are incredible. The staff on top of it, always refilling chips/salsa/water etc. inside area is spacious and bar area is where we go which is great. Went there yesterday afternoon since we were hungry but we didn't want anything big and they have tacos you can order a la cart. The drinks were good and the service was good as well. The only down side was that they were having some trouble with the AC and on the hottest day that was not good. They also lost their interest so they couldn't run the cards for a little while. Ok, food is almost always a 4, dine-in service is always a 1 or barely a 2 (drive thru service is a one-million...not sure how that miracle happens). I've hesitated on reviewing them for a decade, even when they were El Farlito (menu change, but not much else) because the great food always outweighed the crappy service. But this is just a never-ending issue with the poor service. I just don't know why every time we are dining in, the service is short/condescending/forgetful/etc. So tonight, three of us came in for a very quick bite...we already knew our orders and they were simple. We are seated and immediately told that they close in 40 minutes and asked for our orders before menus are even delivered. Ok, no prob, regulars here so we got this...but he runs off without taking them. Anyway, he comes back to take orders and we give them...he doesn't write them down. I ask very clearly for a fajita salad, which I repeat twice and he parrots back once. We are on the same page...fajita salad (which is amazing...if you can get it). So when I was handed a taco salad and the server ran off before I could say anything, I wasn't pleased. I took a few bites because I was starving, but something tasted off...I think the sour cream had been out too long or too warm prior to being put on the salad. Well, it wasn't until he delivered the check that I was able to advise of the two mistakes, the wrong order and quality of the delivered product...then he tried to put it on me that I said the wrong thing. My table mates backed me up, so he tried to offer me free stuff the "next time" I'm in. He was very much still in the it was my fault state of mind so he resorted to a condescending "customer is always right but also always an idiot" tone, and was rushing us out, even though we were all done and ready for our check more than 10 minutes before closing. Their only saving grace was we weren't charged for the salad I couldn't eat, and I didn't have to ask for that accommodation. But, I've also gotten sick twice since I left, which is just salt in the wound. Yes, I will continue to patronize this place...but only for take out and drive through. For some reason, that part of the kitchen/staff never makes mistakes for me. The food, when it's done right, is amazing. This was the first time ever that my food tasted "off" but it may be because the salad I was given (not ordered) had dairy products in it, and I now realize I've unintentionally not had dairy in over a month. Could be me, could be "sour" sour cream. Regardless, in the over two-dozen times I've been here over the years, I have never once left a dine-in evening being pleased with the service. Dine-in is just not very welcoming, accurate, or attentive. Ever. read more

I was in Mexico in August, and Gallo Negro kinda reminded me of going to Mexico. It has the vibe for sure. First of all, the drinks are really excellent. Margaritas obviously. Second of all, I felt like the food was really good. I don't know about these haters saying it isn't good. It was tasty. In fact, they give you a lot of it. I'd say if you are a light eater, then go a la carte. But fine, it wasn't Michelin star, but it was totally legitimate Mexican food (remember, I was just there). Lastly, the last time I saw anyone get alcohol via drive up was back in my podunk hometown that was 90 miles from the Wyoming border (no, not in Colorado). The fact that you can "get" margaritas from a drive-thru in California? Well, I'm struggling with that personally, but I'd say it makes for some solid uniqueness stars on this one. The only good thing about this restaurant is the drive thru. Other than that the food is just ok. The barbacoa is good but everything else is overpriced for what it is. Their agua de horchata always tastes like sour milk. Only place I have ever been to that consistently has this drink taste spoiled. If you can. Go across the street and park at Diana's. I want to like this place. I really do. We live across the street from it and it looks like such a fun spot. However, every time I come I feel like it's a hit or a miss, and sadly, more miss than hit. Overall, I would say the bar has better service than the restaurant, and lunch (read weekday, not really busy) is a better option than dinner. The food is "meh" at best. Fajita salad is good (dressing and prawns), burritos are decent (hard to mess up a burrito). Drinks are probably the best, all other things considered. However, tonight we ordered the ceviche and it only lasted a few bites between my husband and me. First, the presentation - a ceviche in a cereal bowl???? Next, the texture - giant uncut strips of red onion - not good. The flavor - good amount of lime but very uneven spice depending on whether you got a slice of jalapeño (so one bit would be tasteless and the next would burn your mouth), and definitely largely lacking in salt. And it didn't come with any kind of "vessel" to eat it with - chips? tortilla strips? anything? The molcajete was ok - spicy (although like the ceviche, pockets of spice, not uniform flavor throughout), and came with only 4 tortillas (although my husband and I said we were sharing it, and way the rest of the service went, asking for more was just not going to happen). And speaking of service, tonight was by far the worst - minimal communication, I had to go "steal" my own silverware from the server station, chips were never refilled (had to go ask), although if the food had arrived in a timely manner, we wouldn't have needed more chips (except for the ceviche, I guess). Asked for straws for the kids' drinks - had to get them myself from the bar. Food came out very disjointed and was literally pretty much thrown in front of us. Like I said, I want to like this place because it's close, it's convenient and when they're good, they're really good, but unfortunately there's been just as many not so good days so I'm not sure that I would recommend it to other people. read more

I made a Yelp account specifically for El Gallo Negro. This is without a doubt some of the best Mexican food I've ever had over the course of my entire life... and my party stumbled upon it completely by accident! First impressions, they've got an amazing atmosphere--staff was smiling at us and welcoming us in as soon as we arrived. Felt very homey. As they seated us, we noticed how generous they were with their servings of chips and salsa to tide us over while we waited for our drinks and entrees. I'm not sure a Mexican restaurant has ever given me such a big bowl of salsa to enjoy--awesome! The atmosphere itself is capped off by a spacious, lively dining area (indoor or outdoor) with calm lighting and enjoyable traditional music. We sat by the fountain and chatted within the outdoor seating area while we waited. I was so surprised there weren't more people eating here at 5:30 PM! From sitting to dessert, service was top-notch--servers kept good track of our table and made sure we were satisfied. The welcoming family atmosphere persisted throughout the evening and I told our server to give my compliments to the kitchen for the excellent meal. Ample portions of delicious cuisine. I had the Mole Oaxaqueño and highly recommend it. The smallish food menu contains nary a misstep - ingredients are fresh, flavors are complex and intense, and presentation is pretty as a picture. However, the interior decor is rather plain and unexceptional, the staff is lackadaisical to the point of bordering on inattentive, and the upcharge for "extra chips and salsa" always seems like nickel and diming wherever restaurants do that.
