I liked how they had a stand where you can build your hot dogs with salsa, pico de gallo, cebolla, horse radish, lime, etc. It was so affordable and so good. Service was fast and efficient. It was kinda hot because the interior isn't air conditioned. Just kind of a shaded spot with lots of tables. Restrooms were outside, and they weren't really cleaned. The tacos are very mediocre. Carne asada isn't really flavorful and it's really chewy. Not the worst mexican food i've had but definitely not the favorite. Shame on me for giving them another chance after being previously disappointed multiple other times. We live nearby, so now and then we get a hankering for a couple of Mexican hot dogs; 2 chuchos and 2 sammies, to be specific. I should have known better. For the uninitiated, a sammy dog is a sonoran dog with an extra frank. 2 sammy dogs=4 franks. After waiting 15 minutes to receive my order in a mostly-empty restaurant ~4pm, I got home to discover I received 2 regular, single frank sonoran dogs. My wife is Mexican, a native Spanish speaker. When she places the order, they still get it wrong ~60% of the time. And I mean a standard order; no special requests. When I place the order, the rate falls to about 40%. It's not a language barrier. 'Sammy' is the same in English and Spanish. The errors are the result of a careless and indifferent staff that would rather hablamos behind the counter than give their job the attention it deserves. However, the issue is not the cashier's error. The issue is the manager, Ivan. We called to inform them of the error. "I'm sorry, we'll make you two sammy's. come back when you can and ask for Ivan." That should have been a 2 minute conversation. That's what's a competent manager would have done. But this is Ivan. Ivan proceeded to waste ~10 minutes of our time trying to find a reason why the error is mine and not theirs. As if I'm my motives are to score $10 worth of free hot dogs instead of simply getting home and enjoyed the food I ordered. Ivan offered a refund and a 10% discount to replace the order he messed up. 10% on $10. Ivan offered $1 to compensate me for a slow wait time in a mostly-empty restaurant that yielded an incorrect order, more time wasted on the phone, and several more minutes wasted in person. And they also recently switched to smaller franks. They raised prices and cut portions. The management is careless, rude, and indifferent. It's no surprise the cashiers are a reflection of the poor leadership there. This place has gone steadily downhill in the last 3-4 tears, and we will not be back. El Guero Canelowitz read more

3.5 stars! We were vacationing in Tucson so we thought we should try a Sonoran hotdog and found El Guero Canelo as a worthy place to try (given great reviews for Sonoran dogs in multiple media). I liked that the food there has a local Mexican-ish hole in a wall vibe..and the food is affordable! Everything is pretty much less than $10...even quite lower than that price point! We got Sonoran dogs and a chicken burro to try and it wasn't too long of a wait to get our food at all. I thought the Sonoran dog was just ok. The bread was mushy/softer than any hotdog buns I had elsewhere before. I liked that it had sausage wrapped with bacon and a bit of toppings like beans, tomato, chili, onions in a bun..but overall...the taste was just bland. Same comment for the burro, too.nit wasted good and nothing wrong with it...but even so..more bland than the hot dogs. Overall, it's a good affordable place to grab food..and maybe try the signature Tucson Sonoran dogs..but I wouldn't say it's a place for iconic visit again once you had tried it once in your lifetime already.. The old place on 12th Ave is a must visit. The outside looks dicey, but the inside is freshly painted and extremely clean. A service person cleans constantly in the dining area, and makes sure the salsa bar is organized and everyone uses good hygiene. You have to get a Sonoran hot dog here, with all of the trimmings, including sour cream and jalapeño sauce. Get two, they are not huge or expensive. We were told this is the OG spot for some Sonoran dogs and since we are OGs ourselves we took the trip to South Tucson. I wasn't disappointed in my first Sonoran dog experience in the least. It's the first time I've been to this location and I went back and forth between giving them 3 & 4 stars. Ultimately their warm & friendly customer service bumped them up to a 4. We got a couple of Sonoran hot dogs, one with no onions, and a burrito and chicken caramelo. All the food was fine. Food was served at a great temperature and it was still warm by the time we got home to eat it. The no onion dog was clearly marked, and they packaged all food really well for the trip home. Only exceptions were the sauces. There were spills by the time we got home. I was disappointed by the food itself. The dogs were tasty but nothing exceptional. I've had Güero's dogs before at the other location & thought they were delicious so I was a little bummed. All of the food seemed to lack seasoning but it was cooked well. The chicken in the caramelo was thoroughly cooked but not overdone and same for the meat in the burrito. We all added salt to our food & this did improve the flavor. The sauces were another bland item. My friend ordered extra of the green sauce because they love it so much but it didn't taste like anything. Super bland and forgettable. The drinks, a Jamaica and an Horchata, were delicious. Just the right amount of ice, definitely on the sweet side but not overwhelmingly so. Huge sizes for great price. I'll definitely try this location again because I was really impressed by how friendly all staff interactions were and how well they've adjusted their systems to keep everyone safe and healthy. At the recommendation of Sunset Magazine, our AirBnB host, and the James Beard Foundation, we stopped into El Guero for our first Sonoran dog after a day of hiking in Sabino Canyon (yes, we're tourists). We headed to the counter and ordered a couple of the classics (~ $4 each) and a couple of Cokes, then grabbed a two-seater by the salsa bar. Orders come up fast, thanks to a couple guys working a huge grill out back with dozens of hotdogs. On its face, the Guero dog is everything you'll desire - the bun, the dog, the toppings are spot on. This is the iconic dog, as promised. I threw on some tomatillo salsa for good measure, but it wasn't necessary. Seating is casual, fast-foody. Lots of families are enjoying themselves, and this would be a great casual date spot. That said, there was a certain "je ne sais quoi" that left us wanting from the classic dog, so instead of ordering another, we left and bought our next round at Taqueria de Jason across the street. I was waiting in the drive-through for 25 minutes. A bunch of other people got their food before me. They were in the line behind me which made no sense. After about 20 minutes I asked what was taking so long and they told me it was because they didn't have any hot dogs. I waited another five minutes before I finally had to go inside and ask for a refund because I was tired of waiting. I went across the street to another establishment their competitor and got my food within four minutes. I will not be back that's for sure. read more

But we braved the heat to dine in the tent...or yurt like inside. Aka not really sure it it was cooled by AC or fans or some combination but it wasn't exactly cool in there but it wasn't too hot either. Order up front and they give you a light up puck while you wait in the dining areas. Step down to Costco type bench and table combos laid out in a grid around the Fix-in's bar, chocked full of salsas, fresh sliced and pickled produce, cheese and peppers. I am a Chicago hotdog fan, and snob! I musta booked marked this from some foodie show, No Reservations or Triple D who featured this AZ spot and the main specialties... Sonoran Hotdogs. Considering these puppies earned the restaurant a James Beard Award, I was in the correct spot to sample this desert special. I must say the amalgamation porky salty bacon wrapped around a hotdog, added Mexican beans, topped with sweet reduction of cooked onions along with pungent fresh cut ones, tomato in pico form, and a bit of heat provided by jalapeño sauce, all stuffed inside and on top of that soft funky bun; then a squirt of mustard and mayo; will take you to a new dimension and definitely expand your definition of hotdog. I also sampled a Caramelo, basically a quesadilla with protein of choice where the fixings bar comes in handy to hook it up. This one was chicken which was tender, moist cubes of Breast meat that was bursting with flavor... wow! That in a burrito, which they also have will cause you to slap your Mama Sita! This restaurant came highly rated on Yelp, Google, and other media. We all got the $8.99 deal which included two Sonoran Hot dogs and a soda. My bottle of Coca Cola was terrific! The Sonoran Hot dog was a letdown. There was just a little scrap of bacon wrapped around the tiny hot dog. Tasted very bland overall. In fact, that was the opinion of all five of us who each had a Sonoran Hot Dog. My wife ordered a Carne Asada Torta. The torta was pretty good. Better than the hot dog. Overall, it was a disappointment. Maybe they had a new chef in the kitchen that day, Who knows. Just as good as it ever was! I haven't been back since 2006, but have been craving a Sonoran Dog. So we drove on down from Phoenix just for a bite. Yep. And it was worth every minute of the drive. Soft, incredibly soft bun filled with a savory frank wrapped in bacon, and topped with beans, tomatoes, onions, jalapeno sauce, guacamole, and sour cream. We shared a large horchata and it was cinnamon spiced and refreshing. Service is very friendly, and we loved the drive-thru with masks during Covid-19.
