Came here for dinner to try some Sonoran style hot dogs, between the two of us we had two hotdogs and a small beef caramelo. This was enough to fill us up. The food came out in a timely matter. The location had a fairly constant stream of people coming in and out. They have a small toppings bar with salsas, pico etc... and a benched area to sit in. The Sonoran hot dog was definitely bigger than I thought it was going to be, the frank was good, the bun was good - I read that some people find the bun too sweet which I didn't. I enjoyed the bacon wrapped around, it was all good just could have been more spicer but I can fix that myself. The caramelo is a Sonoran style quesadilla with meat and cheese then you can choose if you want flour or corn. We went with flour. Again it was another tasty dish. read more

How have I not reviewed this place? I've come here dozens of times over the years. I'm glad it's not closer cuz I'd weigh a lot more than I do now! Let me keep it simple. If you like homemade tortillas, perfectly cooked carne asada, soda from a bottle, and a salsa bar with lots of choices, look no further. After being recommended by everyone, we made our way to El Guero Canelo to try the Sonoran Hot Dog. The staff was very friendly and the dining area was clean. My hot dog was actually handed to me before I finished paying, which was great. I also loved the true soda in glass bottles, which are always better than the cans. I really enjoyed the hot dog and the unique twist of preparing it. The bacon wrap and sauces truly tied the dog together and I quickly finished it. I probably could have ordered another because they are pretty small. The salsa bar was also fully stocked and looked fantastic. Since I only ordered the hot dog, I didn't have a reason to utilize the bar. Overall, I'll definitely be back and I look forward to more Sonoran dogs as well as other menu options. read more

This was my first time having a Sonoran hot dog. I had really high hopes, but this style of dog was just not up my alley all that much. I did appreciate the bacon-wrapped hot dog and the bevy of toppings, but the sweetness of the bun (I'm not that much into sweet foods of any kind) was off-putting. Maybe if it was toasted??? The sauces and spices were a nice combo, but on the spicier side for my tastes. So I've wanted to come here for like 13 years, ever since I saw the sonoran dog on an episode of diners, drive-ins, and dives while at the gym in college. But I didn't have a reason to be in tucson until this week and i'm so glad i finally got to get one. And it was really good! But sadly, the other stuff I got at EGC was just sort of whatever. Namely, the small bean/cheese burrito and carne asada taco i got. The taco, while being pretty loaded with beef, was just sort of tough and not that flavorful. The bean and cheese burrito was also undersalted. But the Sonoran dog was very good (not as good as the BK one though) and if you go to EGC, I'd probably just stick to them vs branching out. read more

This is always our first stop when flying in to Tucson, and El Guero Canelo is near the airport. This family restaurant is now a recipient for one of the James Beard Awards. The ordering area has been enclosed since you order at the window, and come as you are. Picnic tables seat four, and there are plenty. Menu is limited. We like the quick Sonoran hotdog or Sammie (two weenies). A grilled pepper comes on the side. The tacos are the real deal. The guacamole is delicious. Several sauces are included. None are very hot and they're good. Sodas are in glass bottles just like old times. Try this place and become a regular. read more

This is some of the best food in Tucson! They closed the EGC in Phoenix so I decided to finally cruise down to Tucson to hit up the one on the south side. Everything was excellent! The only thing missing was being able to go to the salsa bar because I LOVE those red onions No red onions today but the food was still soooooo delicious! We had a couple carne asada tacos on corn tortillas, a few Sonoran dogs, and a Chico caramelo with carne asada. The food is fresh and came out fast. Came here based on a vlog i saw. The carne asada burros looked amazing on the video and the discussion was about the tortillas and onions being from Mexico. The beef is treated very plainly. So i decided to try this place out. The neighborhood is not your downtown or suburban type hood. In fact while we were eating a homeless woman came in a grabbed a bunch of stuff from the salsa bar and threw it into here plastic bag. Some people may have gotten scared, but being in Philly a lot, I just didn't find this to be appropriate for a restaurant to accept. The folks inside don't speak english well so knowing a little Spanish helps. They were very nice and pleasant to order from. We had the medium burro filled with beef beans and a bit of cabbage. All i tasted was the beef. Beef and tortillas were really good (hence the extra star) There is a salsa bar in the middle of the covered eating area with a few salads, cucumbers, radishes, grilled onions and serrano peppers. Salsas were decent. Overall if you are visiting Tucson and want an authentic Sonoran experience I think there are better places than this. This is an interesting find and it's worth trying even just once. The spot is somewhat a hole in the wall with a really interesting parking lot that's full of murals everywhere. Going in can turn you off; not a date place unless she's a foodie or hot dog aficionado- but you'll notice this place is clean. They have an individual who cleans up and bus the tables the whole time we were there. It has a taco truck kind of feel to it. But keep going. This spot is a James Beard awardee. Menu is small and straightforward. Caramelos, hotdogs, tacos, etc. I ordered the Sonoran hotdog and this is what I think. This is not your ordinary hotdog. The bread bun seems like it's specially made for this hotdog. It holds it perfectly (tucked in there like a bean in a pod) and it doesn't get soaked by the fillings. The sausage itself is not your typical hotdog. It is just way better than your store bought hotdog. It is meatier and has a nice Smokey flavor. The condiments in it look appetizing and didn't overwhelm the bread with moisture. All in all this is your epic hotdog. Utilize items from the Mexican salad bar and your hotdog will be in a different level. I love the pickled onions and salsa in mine. I've never tasted anything like it and I'm sure to replicate it when I get home (Washington State yo!). The caramelo is another epic dish. It was this meaty very satisfying thicker version of a quesadilla and it has beans. My minor complain is it was a little greasy but I'd ignore that given that the food is really good. Even without any salad bar items, this was superb. From what I read in the website, the owner of this restaurant also owns a bakery and a meat market. Of course you must try the Sonoran hot dog here, just to say that you have. Who can say no to bacon-wrapped hot dog? And the bun is just heavenly. Be sure to come back for their caramelo, which is basically a quesadilla. They use such flavorful and fatty cuts of meat. I was very pleased that this will probably be my go-to in the future. You can eat like a king here for less than $5. There's also a salsa bar with lots of delicious and fresh toppings including pico de gallo, creamy avocado, onion, radish, etc. There's lot of parking on the side and behind the street, but it's not very convenient or accessible from the street. read more

Worst customer service ever! Special on drive thru board. I asked what a 'Torton Special' was. Apparently, that pissed the lady off. She yelled, I mean shouted at the top of her lungs, the answer. Then she was snarling when we drove up to pay and slamming machine and my card around. She stuck a pink post it on the side of my SUV and slammed the drive thru window shut. It's our first time here, btw. She opened it a few minutes later to again shout at us because apparently , you're supposed to drive around the corner to get your food. Favorite restaurant in Tucson! Food is fast, delicious, and so fresh. I came here with about 20 people for a late lunch during a mural tour around the city. Our tour guide said we had about 20 minutes, and I thought no way we would all get to eat in that time. The staff moved so quickly through the line! It was incredible! Plus there was plenty of seating for us. I ordered two chicken tacos on corn tortillas with the mango smoothie. The tacos were filled to the max. I had to use the second tortilla on each to make it like an extra long wrap. (I could not get any of the hot dogs due to a gluten allergy, but others said they were great. The double dog version looked best.) My mango smoothie had some spicy sauce in it; so good! In the seating area, there is a bar with salsas and toppings for your food, self-serve. I grabbed some fried jalapenos and cucumbers. Next time: I'll try another meat for the tacos, and not worry about the line. read more

Had an irritating experience. We ordered, wait is already long because they are busy. Our buzzer went off but our food was prepared to eat there and not to go, so they held onto our hotdogs so they could add our tacos to the bag. My husband watched as they took 2 of our hotdogs out of the bag and gave them to a lady that said she had 2 missing. Then the rest of our food was ready, they thought we were done but we were still missing the two hotdogs they took out. We had to wait for them to make those, she said it was ready, but she only added 1 and we were missing two. So now we had to wait a third time. During this time, two different people asked to see our receipt. I understand being busy, but this was just not paying attention and didn't even apologize for the inconvenience. Heard about this place and saw the truck around town, but this was my first dive in of indulgence. Or so I had hoped. The "indulge button" never did get satiated. Went to a wedding yesterday. It was held at a beautiful home on several desert acres. They arrived early and quietly set up shop. A lot of people looked forward to the Sonoran dogs and Carne Asada tacos. But as the time arrived for partaking, I observed a lot of half eaten dogs and tacos left on the tables as people migrated inside for sweets and drinks instead. The flavors or just not that great. Everything was fresh enough, there was just no spice, no variety and absolutely nothing stood out. In fact, it reminded me of the quick easy taco dinners we make it home when we are in a hurry. Basically we got to corner store bought tortillas heated on the flat top, with small chunks of grizzly steak or pork. I heard several people say that wasn't what they thought Carne Asada was supposed to be. Isn't that grilled over an open flame? And all the salsas were pre-made, and placed in plastic tubs. Again, I heard several comments that it taste like it came out of a can or jar. Just tasted more like stewed tomatoes and salsa. Decent but nothing exciting. We ordered two Carne asada burritos @ 11.99 each. Took awhile to get our order. My hubby got his wrapped with bacon so took a little longer. I got regular, came with cabbage and beans. Mine was super full of cabbage which made it come apart!! And the meat i was pulling out so much chopped fat from my mouth! The flavor of the meat not seasoned, not even salt. And it was super greasy. I finally took it apart to dig out the cabbage put on a small plate it was over a cup of cabbage. I dug through the rest of the burro and tried to eat just the meat. The tortilla was good but to much. We haven't been to this place in since 2011. Which now i know why. I have learned my lesson and will never return. Don't recommend it to anyone. read more

Yum! This was our first time having a Sonoran hot dog and we loved it! My husband got the Sammy dog (2:1 dog to bun ratio) and said next time he'd just get the regular dog (1:1.) He's a meat guy but would rather have 2 regulars than 1 Sammy because the Sammy was harder to eat and made the bun kinda soggy. We also got a Carne Asada Burro with beans, cheese and cabbage. We fly out from Chicago, just to get our Sonoran Hot Dog fix. We tried a few other places in Southern Arizona, but we always liked El Guero Canelo the best, even the El Guero Canelo in Phoenix isn't as good as the ones in Tucson. We always order a couple each of Sonoran Hotdogs and Chicken tacos, plus the salad bar equals a perfect lunch. The hotdog buns are fresh and soft and the hotdogs are wrapped in bacon are grilled to perfection. Add the beans and jalapeno sauce (surprisingly mild, as with all Sonoran cooking) and you have the perfect combination! read more

We knew we had to try this place when it got Mark Wiens's seal of approval! We opted for the classic - the Sonoran dog - but without the bacon. The bun is oh-so-soft and fluffy. Why have I never thought to add tomatoes to my hot dogs?! The fried jalapeños are also a great touch, and the drive through makes this a convenient stop for when you're on the go. This truly is A DIVE!!! Small, walk-up place that has a covered area for eating. They have a salsa/condiment bar with several pics de gallo's, four different salsas - one green, two red, an avocado sauce, radishes, cucumbers, pickled jalapeños, grated cheese etc. I wanted to try a Sonoran hot dog after hearing about them earlier in the day. I took one bite and it was so foul tasting I spit it out, had to pull over and rinse my mouth out. I'm not sure if it was spoiled or if some cleaning agent had gotten mixed in, but it was absolutely disgusting. I contacted Gueros immediately via their website. I left my phone number and email. I wanted a refund, but I also wanted to make them aware before they gave rotten chicken to someone else as well. It has been one week and I haven't heard back from them. I'm sad I will NEVER go back there again. If you have a choice, go to BK's. It's very close to this location and even if you're trying to stay loyal to Guero, it's time to let go and find better.
