I came here to the El herradero on Jefferson and the food that I ordered was disgusting Not only was that the case I specifically told them not to put two specific ingredients on my plate due to allergies and yet the lady still put them on there and was real rude one addressed about the situation. Since arriving attitude was really rude Snappy and not very polite. If I could give her no stars I would. I do not recommend this restaurant. I came here after work trying to have a good dinner with my boyfriend and all I got was crappy service. Didn't get to eat any of the food and it was really busy on Cinco de Mayo. My only criticism is they need to update their website and online menu as well as phone numbers & addresses of their businesses. While in line patrons had nothing but good to say about the food. We enjoyed our meal here, it was recommended on Yelp and on a brochure we got from the Visitor's Center. It is a fairly small, casual Mexican restaurant with quick service and solid Mexican fare. The menu had a lot of choices which I liked. I settled on the Chicken al Mojo de ajo and it was very good. I also ordered a Mexican coke; I am very mistrustful of Mexican restaurants that don't stock pop with real sugar imported from Mexico. Happily, this one did. (In fact the whole city of Pocatello was wonderful in this respect. The coffee shop had Mexican coke as well as our hotel's "pantry" - but I digress.) The food was served hot and quickly by a friendly guy, he and a very nice woman seemed to work in tandem, seating clients, taking orders, serving and bussing the tables. Decent Mexican eats at incredibly reasonable prices. I ordered their chicken nachos (minus the refried beans). The chicken was flavorful, the portion was ample (I couldn't finish it) and with a nice sprinkling of cilantro atop it--overall, a solid dish. My dining companion got their veggie burrito, which he also reported as solid. Two children in our party ordered their horchata which they enjoyed with much lip smacking delight. The ambiance is all sombreros and mariachi music (as it should be). The service was a bit slow. And, apparently, you just go to the counter to pay when your done as we waited a bit and no bill ever materialized. The price was right though--4 of us were amply fed for $28. read more

Excellent food. Had the "Diablo Pollo" which had a nice authentic flavor with some good heat behind it. Rice and beans were solid but not out of this world. However, when I come back It will be near impossible to not order a plethora of the spicy pork tacos. Friggin awesome. Perfectly tenderized and seasoned on a fresh corn tort.....simply amazing. Stopped here for lunch on our family vacation road trip as we were impressed with the Yelp reviews and were in the mood for Mexican. Food was very authentic and the decor as well. Seems also like a very popular local lunch stop as well. Service was excellent during the meal but what happened after impressed us the most. Later that day and many miles down the road, my wife noticed that she had forgotten her prescription reading glasses on her chair at the restaurant. We called the restaurant to see if they had happened to pick them up and they had. To save us driving back, Karim, our waitress volunteered to go to the Post Office on her day off and mail them to our home in Southern California. When we asked if we could repay her and her husband for their trouble, the only thing they asked was that we pay it forward. Thank you. Surely we will do so! read more

Came in for dinner on a week night and there was plenty of seating available. I thought this place was like a normal restaurant but it's a smaller Mexican spot without a drive thru. The waitress was quick to get our drink and meal orders in. I ordered the chicken and steak fajitas and i had high expectations but both the chicken and steak were over cooked. The sides were good but the veggies tasted fresh. Most people who came in were grabbing to go orders and I regret not getting a burrito because they looked good. read more

Surprisingly good food in Pocatello. We drive up to Rexburg for memorial day each year and this year we decided to stop here for dinner. I had the wet chimichangas with pastor (spicy pork). To start off they give you chips, beans, and salsa verde, all of which was fantastic. The basket was a little light for the three of us, but that was fine because the meals were huge. The menu has a good selection of familiar and some not so familiar Mexican food. The prices are fantastic. I didn't notice anything above $12, and a lot of the combos were in the $6-$10 range. Our order consisted of a wet chimichanga combo (served with rice and beans), a shrimp dish, and three or four tacos. The check was only $23.85, a great deal for the amount and quality of food. Service was okay. The food came out in a decent time, but there was a point where all three of our empty drinks went unnoticed for 7-10 minutes, which can be a killer with spicy food. The ambience was also okay. The decorations give a nice touch to the building, but the seats are a little too upright and hard. Piñatas and paintings cover the walls. The one huge negative for me was the noise. It's fairly loud and crowded, and the chairs make a ear shattering screech when someone scrapes them across the floor. The food was fantastic. We weren't expecting much from a small place in a small town, but we all left happy. The rice and beans on the side were great, especially with some of the salsa verde drizzled on them. My main course was excellent. I think that about covers it. The food is great and definitely worth a try if you're passing through town! Bye bye!! read more

I'm really not sure what happened. The food here used to be great, but over the last week I've eaten here twice and everything just kind of fell flat. They've changed their salsa recipe, I remember there being more garlic and lime, and now it basically just tastes like blended pickled jalapeno with a little bit of tomatillo. There's no tang anymore, and the mark of a good Mexican restaurant is an excellent salsa, and it's no longer very excellent. The carne asada and pastor in my street tacos was dry, under salted, and under seasoned, and the friend I brought with me the last time was not impressed with the quality of the food. The service was still great, and the food is still decent, so I will more than likely go here again if I'm hungry and in Pocatello for some event. read more

I ordered 3 chicken enchiladas smothered in chili verde. What I got, and happily ate, were 3 chili verde enchiladas smothered in, you guessed it, chili verde. I definitely cannot complain about getting 3 yummy enchiladas, rice and beans for 8 bucks! I think I'll come back next time I'm in town. read more

Went in Saturday night for a date night with my honey and was NOT disappointed! Their chips and salsa are delish, I ordered the cheese enchiladas and they were awesome. The rice is good. My partner ordered the burrito trio (I tasted each one), and that was awesome. We really look forward to making this place our new date night staple. The service was awesome, the place has an intimate and quaint feel, and the food was just outstanding. Can't wait to go back and try more items on their menu! Oh yeah... the best part? We left spending no more than $25 including the tip. HIGHLY recommend! Great place to bring visitors too... we all know good Mexican food in Pocatello is in short supply. I really was excited about this place. Little hole in the wall, smelled awesome. I got the chili rellenos, and the rest of the table got macho burrito. Pollo crema, and wet chimichangas. Everyone said their food was delicious!! I had some of the chicken and it was good. My rellenos were not what I expected. Instead of a lovely beer batter on the outside it was egg, so u get that weird egg smell as soon as it arrives which can be a turnoff. I'd go again, but get something else. Solid Mexican food in pleasant surroundings. The hostess and server were very friendly and efficient and I liked being able to choose my own seat. I was glad we were there a bit early as the place filled up. I had the Shrimp al mojo y ajo and it was very good. Taco Bell is 5 stars compared to this garbage. Came here because of the reviews was so good. If this is the best I feel sorry for anybody that walks in. I ordered cheese enchiladas and a chile relleno . There was no flavor it was so bland. I tried to salt it put hot sauce on it but still could not past 2-3 bites. The chile relleno was like nothing I ever seen before it was a egg omelet with a chile in the middle with some cheese. There was no batter on the chile. I've had my fair share of Mexican food ( lived along the border most of my life) good and bad but this was the worst. I feel bad writing this but save your money and time. read more

If this is the best Mexican food in Pocatello, you poor people are missing out. I really should know better than to eat Mexican food outside of the Southwest, but I figured hey, how badly could they screw it up? Ugh, dumb mistake. The chips were served with salsa verde and a refried bean dip. The chips and salsa were pretty good, but the bean dip was indistinguishable from cheap stuff out of a can. Edible, but nothing to write home about. I ordered the the enchiladas rojas as my entree, with steak as my meat of choice. The salsa rojas was strangely bitter, with very little heat. I was willing to scrape it off and substitute my leftover salsa verde from the chips, but I could barely stomach the filling either. The steak was completely dry, like every drop of grease had been pressed out of it. It had ok flavor, but the texture was completely off-putting. As for the sides of rice and beans? More canned bean slop and pretty mediocre, flavorless rice. While I was eating, a server sat in a booth across from me (on break?), sucking down a soda, texting, and studiously ignoring anything or anyone outside of her phone. I was effectively ignored by her and everyone else in the restaurant after my food was delivered. read more

Food ranges from 2/5 to 3/5 stars. If you order your food close to closing time beware. I've gotten hard rice and tortillas in/on my burrito a few times and it was always close to closing time. The chicken is usually decent. The horchata is decent too; though, I've never had bad horchata come to think of it... I've eaten in a few times and the service has always been pretty good. Adjacent parking can be hard to find sometimes. It shares it's parking lot with a gas station. You may have to park across the street. Their super burrito is the best deal around (food to price ratio). They can be really hard to understand over the phone. Though, they have never messed up my order. I've asked for them to substitute guacamole for cheese a few times. They say, "that's fine" and then leave the cheese out and charge me for the guacamole. I've had it happen more than twice even when I explained myself again so i've given up. I just get extra guacamole at times and leave the cheese in if I want it. The best Mexican food I've had *in Pocatello* so far. It's a step up from taco bell type fast food style "Mexican" but it will probably be disappointing to people who have had food in southern areas like Texas, Arizona, so cal, Mexico, etc like I have. I've eaten a lot of good Mexican food in my life (often in Mexico before they got into shot-putting severed heads) and I don't think it exists in Pocatello. EDITED 21 SEP 2013. read more

The salsa verde at El Herradero is some of the best I've ever had. Spending the last couple of decades in South Texas means that's some seriously good salsa! Came in by myself while visiting family in Poky, and picked up to go for two others. The pacing of the to go was perfect, even though I told the server at the time I ordered my food, which can be tricky to do. Service was overall quick and friendly. The steak fajita was a bit overdone, but the salsa and the legit frijoles made up for it. read more

I can go to El Herradero for dinner every night of the week and not get sick of it. They start you off with a basket of chips and some good tomatillo salsa. Looking over the menu, the ala carte options are usually the best for me. A typical dinner for me includes at least two chicken soft tacos. These chicken tacos are a meat lover's dream. Two small corn tortillas gently cradle a handful of divine chicken meat. Drizzled over the top is another tasty salsa. Served with a lime wedge these tacos never disappoint. For $1.25 for each taco, you could eat yourself stupid for $6. So tasty. So affordable. I have no bad comments for El Herradero. read more

This is an incredible Mexican restaurant here in Pocatello. Great food, huge portions and very, very low prices. I was introduced to El Herradero by a friend of mine and was thrilled. A veggie burrito for $3.50- say WHAT?! Even a poor university student like me can afford that!!! I really enjoy the food. The service is good- but it can be VERY busy at lunch time. Weird spot can be difficult to park as they share a parking lot with a gas station. People will double park and park you in without hesitating. I ordered the colorado burrito the food is amazing and the price is even better. The service was fine except i didn't know you just got up to pay. If you like green chili from a can then this is the place for you. Beans were ok, a little bland. Rice was fine. They don't have air conditioning and it was sweltering in there and there were dead flies in the windowsill. Our server acted like she had better things to do than wait on her customers.
