This restaurant is just down the street from my home, and it had received such great reviews, that I finally gave it a try. It is obviously very popular -- it is a small place, but was full when I arrived. We got take-out, and tried several dishes. All in all, I would reccomend trying it if you are interested in Peruvian food. Honestly I found the style of food to be just OK (not bad, but not amazing), although they do seem to do a good job of some of the best dishes. Some specific thoughts: Pollo Saltado - This entree was my favorite. It had good marinated chicken, sauteed with some vegetables, and french fries tossed in. It was tasty. I tried dipping the fries in some of the sauces that came with the dish, which was fun. Salad - Skip it. Just a garden salad with italian dressing, and it didn't seem very ethnic at all. Plantain - Very good. Served with a dipping sauce that is sweet. I'd suggest sharing an order of this for dessert. Chicken combination - I think that this is what they are known for. It was OK, and the chicken had several sauces to dip in. However, all things considered, I'd suggest trying an entree specialty instead, to get some variety. All in all, I debated between a 3 and 4-star review. Because the restaurant receives so many perfect scores, I felt like I need to be a dissenting opion and drive down the average a bit, so I went with 3 stars. However, it is borderline. If you want to try a good Peruvian restaurant in the suburbs, I'd recommend giving it a shot. read more

Very good Peruvian street food. The flavors are strong, and the meals filling. The menu is excellent, offering chicken, beef, shrimp, and vegetarian, but a lot of very unique items too (heart skewers anyone?). We started with the Fried Yuca Appetizer which were nicely fried strips in huancaína, a cold white cheese sauce made with garlic and amarillo, accompanied by a sliced boiled egg and lettuce. The flavor was very good, though the portion a bit small at 5 or 6 steak fry sized pieces. I had the #13, which is chicken in vinegar and pepper sauce and she had #37, deep fried plantain and egg. Hers was simple but good, though probably a bit more of a breakfast choice and not exactly what we thought it would be. Mine was exactly what I expected, again simple, a stewed breast of chicken in halves with wing in a sauce that had a strong vinegar and a medium-spicy chile flavor, accompanied by red onions and sliced yuca and carrots. The chile flavor was very rich and deep and balanced well with the vinegar, pretty much the flavor you would expect from a traditional Incan stew. This came with a couple scoops of rice and was rich and hearty. We had a couple cans of Inca Cola with this, and you should try it. It's a bit like Mountain Dew, but with more of a banana overtone to it, which suited the meal very well. All this cost about $25, which is pretty good in my book for the quality and quantity of simple food we got. read more

The small establishment contains a few tables and a grand wood fired rotisserie where the chicken is cooked. The fries are fresh fried potatoes,awesome! The chicken,divine. The service,its good but, being a mom and pop, and the fire to keep,and some language/maybe cultural differences is slightly lacking,but in a good way. They leave you to eat with your family and don't bug you. . .but my water was left unfilled and with no ice, whatever. . I enjoyed the time with my kids. That's not good customer service, I paid 35 dollars for this meal that had dry ass lamb in it and to top it all off, they didn't even give me my most expensive dish on the receipt. 8 tables hole in the wall family run Peruvian restaurant. First time eating Peruvian food and we loved the food from this place. We were tired after a long day of driving and sightseeing. We ordered the fish stew plate, 1/4 roasted chicken, and chicken cilantro soup to go. Everything were delicious, especially the soup. I love cilantro and this soup certainly deliver on the cilantro taste. The 1/4 chicken was moist and flavorful. The fish stew had a big fillet of breaded fish cooked in chili tomato sauce and pickled onion. This restaurant really got us wanting to eating Peruvian food again definitely. read more

Dear Gresham Oregon, I used to refer to you as the linty belly button of Portland. Don't tell my clients, but I was always kind of afraid of you. Last year you had me at Russian Deli and this year you went and outdid yourself by introducing me to El Inka. A nondescript Peruvian hole in the wall nestled tight, almost hidden, inside of a strip mall. Their claim to fame is roasted chicken but they should stop waving their chicken flag and replace it with a ceviche one immediately! Big juicy shrimp cured with lime, celery, red onion and a perfect amount of salty tang on a soft yam patty. Not fishy, not too jam packed with veggies, just a ton of mouth puckering WIN. I was not a fan of the roasted corn on the side. Nor of our waiter who was a Peruvian version of Napoleon Dynamite. He was so earnest, but just all nervous and unsure. I considered faking like I was choking at one point, just to get him to pay attention to me. The restaurant is tiny, paper menus, with a ton of interesting options. The prices don't punch your wallet in the nuts like Andina's do, and they serve Inka cola in 2 liters. Let us not forget the chicken that is slow roasted in a brick oven, right before your eyes. Juicy, flavorful and served with sauces that were not explained to us like they were to the white people. The sauces were good, and in the end, it was more fun making up names for them. Gresham, Oregon! Go to your room, young man! I hope that you are happy with yourself, because you're in trouble! Slowly but surely you have grown on me and now I'm announcing it in public! My first thought upon walking in was "wow." The inside was shiny, colorful, and clean. And there were mouthwatering whole chickens spinning on a spit over a wood (or was it coal?) fire. So of course I ordered chicken, wouldn't you? The chicken was not particularly tender or flavorful. The skin was not crispy. More seasoning, and maybe more brining time before roasting, might've helped. I tried boosting the flavor by heaping on the house sauce. The green sauce was refreshing, but didn't have any kick to it, either. It felt like something was missing. I do have El Inka to thank for introducing me to the alfajores. Having visited many pollerias in Peru and Marlyand (the Peruvian pollo capital of America), I consider myself a bit of a pollo a la brasa aficionado. The first thing I noticed about El Inka is that prices are are a bit higher than I'm used to. For $19 you get a whole chicken, a salad and a side of regular french fries. In my experience, a whole chicken plus a choice of 2 large sides (like rice, beans, yuca fries, plantain) is usually around $16. Having zero interest in a weak iceberg salad, we opted for the "whole chicken only" at $12 plus a $4.50 side of yuca fries, which are the traditional side for pollo a la brasa. The chicken was a pretty standard size, but for $4.50, I expected a reasonable serving of yuca. Instead, we got a tiny styrofoam sandwich box, which wasn't even full with 5-6 fry chunks. They were crisp, and well cooked, but hardly worth the cost. The chicken was well enough executed, and roasted in a wood-fired oven, with brown, adequately crisp skin, but it lacked spice and seasoning. They were there, but not in a quantity to provide the dish's characteristic flavors. El Inka's sauces also missed the mark, which is a real shame, since a good aji can easily fix a broken pollo. Their sauce offerings included a standard yellowish mayo, a diced herb mayo variant, a mild green lettuce/herb sauce, and what I'm sure was an off-brand sriracha. I would have loved to see a spicy jalapeño sauce (like they have at the famous El Pollo Rico) instead, because every pollereia should pack a punch of some kind. Overall, the meal itself was acceptable, but for the price, I will keep looking. read more

Fire roasted chicken as moist, juicy, and well-seasoned Peruvian food at a cheap price. The interior is small and the service is super friendly; for it is best to come here in small groups since the place is not huge. For anyone that is new in coming here - get the whole chicken combo. It can easily feed 4 people for about 20 bucks including the $1.50 2 liter Inca Cola. It comes with about 6 or so pieces of roasted chicken with some of the best homemade fries. The salad is pretty sad, just iceberg lettuce and cucumbers. The salad dressing adds to it. There are about 5 homemade sauces you can add on to the food. I haven't tried the other food yet, the lunch specials sound great. I heard other dishes are delicious too and this will not disappoint one bit! read more

I can die happy right now, haven't had a meal so good in ages. Even though this is peruvian food, really reminded me of the beans, rice and chicken of my time in Brazil. Now El Inka is a bit of a trek for us from our PDX abode, but it I know we'll be coming back really soon. Why? Well, food is outstanding. We had the papas for an app, the cheese and pepper sauce over the simple sliced potatoes, amazing. Then we all had variations on their signature chicken. I had half a chicken with beans, rice and some fried plantains. The chicken is moist, due to the flavorful marinade they use. The beans and rice are simple, well seasoned and comforting. The plantains, well, I could eat them all night long, and the passionfruit/pepper dipping sauce, just finishes them wonderfully. Also can't forget the great sauces: red pepper sauce (spicy w/some vinegar), green (cilantro, peppers), and my favorite the yellow pepper sauce (it's like mayo, mustards and spicy peppers all in one, incredible). Oh and we got some alfajores with our check, that a friend of the owner makes, that were the perfect end to an incredible meal. We also really fell in love with the owners, so friendly and nice. Wow!!! So, sometimes you find things by accident, and have to have an explorers heart in Gresham. Sometimes you strike out hard, and other times, you find the most amzing little places. El Inka is an amazing spot. Hidden in a little strip mall off Division, hides the best chicken I have had for a loooooooong time. The food is delicious, perfectly cooked, and incredibly flavorful. Slightly spicy, with the best sauces to perk it up to whatever hellish level of heat you need. And get the Inka Kola. Very good. This place is great, and I will be heading back again. read more

Authentic, affordable Peruvian food bursting with flavor. There are only three Peruvian restaurants that I know of in the Portland area. This one is by far the most authentic and affordable one. I live in downtown Portland, but it's so worth the drive. I come out here at least once a month. It's a little hole in the wall place ran by a small family that originated from Peru. Since the owners aren't from here, they have no American influence -----meaning they're food is authentically Peruvian and delicious! It may be really busy at times, so I recommend you call in advance to see if there is space. If they are busy, the service is terrible, but the quality of food is still there. read more

Really good food! I'm a vegetarian so I was a little iffy about coming to such a tiny place, but with the vegetarian options a plenty, I couldn't say no. Hubby ordered a quarter of a chicken (he should have gotten a half) with an Inka Cola and I ordered the Locro Serrano (vegetarian dish) with a glass of Maracuya. Hubby's chicken sat a top of a bed of French fries and came with a salad. He ordered a side of beans and was glad he did because he did not realize that a quarter chicken was not that much food. He really enjoyed what he ordered though and could not stop dipping his fries in the beans. My stew was a creamy corn, pea and sweet potato loveliness with rice. Excellent! Service was also pretty great. One guy running all around helping everyone was all it took to get out food and drinks and make sure we were ok, along with everyone else in the place. WOW again I say to you. Got some food to go and had their Arroz con mariscos - spicy seafood and rice, Caucau de mariscos - fish/seafood stew with rice and finally their Ensalada de Quinua. The food also comes with 3 hot type sauces, green (fresh and hot as in spicy), red even more spicy and yellow which was maybe like a mustard. Still not educated enough yet. I'll ask next time I go back. I do think their seafood needs some help however as it was a little on the wimpy side as far as size and also was not the most fresh, though not old if that makes sense. They could work on that a little bit more. Their spicing though is very tasty and unique. I was in there asking a few questions before knowing what I want. The son said he could not tell me what kind of cheese is on the Yuca a la Huancaina as it was some sort of family secret.. hmm.. WHOA! Peruvian home cooking at its finest and most comfortable. My wife and I used to get great Peruvian food from the renowned Mario's in Los Angeles, and we really haven't had it since we moved to Portland. El Inka's food is just as good: absolutely outstanding, flavorful, and authentic. (My wife's been to Peru a few times and LOVES Peruvian food. She noted how authentic it was at El Inka). The moment I stepped out of the door I started to crave the food again. I guarantee El Inka will become a go-to restaurant for us. My wife ordered a cilantro chicken soup with rice. It was thick, more a stew than a soup. And it was absolutely phenomenal. The cilantro flavors, the brown-meat chicken and the soft rice made for such a comfort food. I ordered the Arroz Mariscos (seafood and rice) in a spicy red sauce and OH MAN! So comforting, spiced just right, and the seafood seemed as if it were VERY fresh. It tasted as though it had never even been frozen. At at $9.99, it was a steal! The family that owns and operates El Inka is very friendly and welcoming and the food is some of the best in the Portland Metro area. It's quite inconveniently located for Portland's foodie crowd. Not too many of them make it out to Gresham too often (and who could blame them?) But honestly Portland foodies: you HAVE to make the Peruvian Pilgrimage out here and try this food. Sure Portland's other Peruvian restaurant, Andina (located in the Pearl), gets a lot of press, and they do serve great food, but so does El Inka, at a fraction of the price! At Andina, you'll pay 2-3 times more for your Peruvian food, and frankly I don't know if you'll enjoy it any more than you would at El Inka (unless you're that snobbish that you need an exotic, high-end ambiance to accompany your dinner). El Inka, like 82nd Ave's Ha VL, is one of those small, hole-in-the-wall ethnic Ma-n-Pa's that despite its size and location have managed to catch the eye of Portland's vast and popular culinary scene. I think it's well deserved. Come make the long drive out to Gresham and sample Peruvian comfort food. And be sure to wash it down with some Inka Kola (which tastes a bit like a bubblegum cream soda, if that makes sense) read more

Thank you fellow yelpers for another home-run restaurant recommendation! This place has prompted my husband and I to make a pact that we will not order the same thing from the menu until we've tried everything on it. Except for the ceviche, we will ALWAYS order the ceviche. I ordered the chicken in gravy sauce which was amazing (by the way, it came out the color of Mountain Dew due to the peppers they use in the sauce), It would be impossible to describe this dish due to the complexity of the ingredients and the overall difference from anything else I've ever tried. All I know is that it was delicious! Seriously, yummy. My husband ordered the lamb which was also incredible (although I enjoyed my order a tad more). In addition to our food the waitress brought out a trio of house-made hot sauces which we promptly drowned our food in and, come to think of it, we never did make up our mind as to which one we liked better. So seriously, if anything deserves a drive out to Gresham its El Inka. p.s. They also have take out! read more

Chicken was a little dry. Not much meat on the 1/4 chicken like the usual Peruvian spots I love. The skin was not crispy at all, so it took away from the rotisserie feel, also too it was heavy with a interesting mix of spices, I feel as though it was heavy on it (cumin?). The rice is good but the only thing that saved the experience was the AH-MAZING red sauce they give you. I'd take a bath in that sauce, marry it, die with it its so good. Other than that ... Eh. El Inka serves rustic Peruvian food with love. While some of the dishes are much better than the others, overall, it's a good place. From 11am-3pm, they serve a lunch special for $8.99, which features an appetizer (choose between soup or potatoes), a main dish of the day, and Inka Kola. Today being Thursday, the special was the rotisserie chicken, which came with salad and fries. For the appetizer, I picked the chicken and rice soup. The soup was warm and comforting, but a little bland. I felt like it needed more salt and more spice, alike. While the lime slice they gave on the side helped a bit, it could easily overwhelm the other flavors in the soup without really adding anything that it needed. The rotisserie chicken, meanwhile, was excellent. The skin was nicely seasoned and the meat was very tender. While it takes the various sauces they provide well, it's even good on its own. As for the fries, they were solid and plentiful, with just the right amount of salt. I'd highly recommend dousing them in one of the hot sauces, as they absorb it well. As for the salad, it was pretty mediocre. Relatively tasteless lettuce and a few tomato and radish slices, served with an acidic, Italian-ish dressing that didn't really do much for me. I'd highly recommend the sauces they put out to accompany your food. The three spicy ones go as follows: yellow = mild, green = medium, red = hottest. I recommend liberal dousing of the yellow on the fries and careful use of the red on the chicken. The green was nice as a middle ground, and had a strongly herbaceous quality to it, but the other two were the better options, between the creaminess of the yellow and the good fresh-chili acidity of the red. With the combo, you get the famous Inka Kola to drink, which tastes a little like bubble gum, a little like vanilla, and a little like lemon. That said, I'd recommend getting a chicha morada to drink, if at all possible--it's even worth spending on top of the combo. Made from purple corn, pineapple, and spices, it's fruity, spicy, and sweet, and is equally good cold and hot (they served it cold by default there, but I bet they could heat it for you if you wanted it hot). Overall, the good qualities of the stronger items at El Inka outweigh the problems with their weaker items. Come here if you're looking for a big, hearty meal, and plan your meal around the rotisserie chicken. It's their specialty for a reason. read more

I really wanted to like this place. With all my heart I did! I definitely have a soft spot for Peruvian food... but I'm starting to think maybe just in California... There are literally a handful of peruvian restaurants in the ENTIRE state of Oregon and this little whole in the wall does not do the cultural dishes any justice... Walking in, I was ready to give this place a chance, even though there was a SANITATION "compliance" order sticker on their window. Looking to the right of the table on the windowsill were 3 dead flies and a mountain of cobwebs... I continue to look past all this.... Then our server brings us the sauces after we ordered the Tallarin Saltado (peruvian noodles and chicken) and the Jalea Mixto (deep fried seafood atop french fries) and I was impressed until I tried it. There was a total of 3 bottles of sauces, Sriracha, Yellow buttery sauce with a kick, and the specialty "green" sauce that all peruvian joints have. I was disappointed with all the sauces except for the Sriracha... Not flavorfull, no "mmm" factor to it at all. I guess I've been spoiled with the peruvian eateries in California. The seafood was chewy, the noodles in the tallarin saltado were literally chow mein noodles that they threw some soy sauce and vinegar on... Oh how I hoped this place would be better but it completely let me down from beginning to end. Not to mention, I drove 40 minutes from where I live just to eat here, JUST HERE! Looking for a place to try after a Swim Meet at the MHCC, we decided to give El Inka a try. This place is easy to miss if you're not careful. It's tucked in a small Strip Mall and it's plain on the outside. On the inside, it's a cozy small family owned restaurant with the music blaring out of a small stereo and seat yourself dining area. We were greeted by Luis who promptly gave us our menus. One of my favorites has been Bisteca Apanado con tacu tacu. Oh well... not on the menu, but they did have Bisteca Apanado con papas fritas y salad. That will have to do. But before I could claim this for my own, my two kids decided to order that one. I settled for the lomo saltado and my wife got bisteca con tacu tacu. Our meals came out of the kitchen cooked to perfection. I have a weakness for tacu tacu which is refried rice and beans mixed together and fried again. So I traded some of my food for theirs. A shout out to Claudia who cooked our meals. She is so warm and friendly with a big welcoming smile. We will go again when are in the neighborhood. And thank you Claudia for making my night before Father's Day dinner a special one. read more

Great Peruvian roast chicken! The place is very small so be prepared to wait. We shared a half chicken, fries, and salad. It was enough to share...although I did want some more of the chicken. They give you a TON of fries! They give you even more fries if you order the full chicken. The other entrees sounded delicious, but it looked like most people came for the chicken. They have a really awesome rotisserie at the back of the restaurant. This place looks like it was probably a house back in the day, which adds to the homie feel of it. You can peek into the kitchen where all the action is going on. I even heard they are open on Thanksgiving! It could be a great place for takeout if your too lazy to cook. read more

La Inka is a hidden gem located about 20 minutes outside of the PDX city center. They have limited seating so be prepared for a wait during lunch or dinner prime hours. We went for late lunch around 2pm so we only waited a few minutes. Their most popular item on the menu is the "pollos a la brasa" or rotisserie chicken. And I must say, it's pretty damn good! Juicy and flavorful, I wish we had ordered a whole chicken to share. I think the only set back is the service. They only had one server and service was somewhat so so. When I first heard about El Inka featuring Peruvian Rotisserie chicken on the magazine and later read some Yelp reviews to confirm its authenticity, I was pretty excited to try out the place myself. I think this is the only place that has Peruvian rotisserie chicken around Portland metro area (unless I am wrong and please let me know). So I starved my self for half the day to make room for what I was planning to ingest. I knew exactly what I wanted. The reviews were pretty high for the rotisserie chicken and the seafood ceviche. For two people, we ordered a whole chicken with 2 gigantic sides of salad and fries and the ceviche for appetizer. With the combo, there was also 2 liter of Inca Cola for $1.50 extra. Of course I couldn't pass that until I realized I was drinking high fructose corn syrup with yellow number 5. But that was all good. What I came here for was the food. The rotisserie chicken was moist but a little under flavored. I was expecting more because I had a great experience of Peruvian rotisserie chicken in San Francisco (Limon Rotisserie). Compared to Limon, this place is 5/10. I meant the chicken was generally good but nothing special. I could just go to Costco and get a rotisserie chicken and just be as satisfied without having to drive all the way to Gresham. The salad was nothing to rave about. It was just iceburg lettuce w/ some tomatoes and cucumber. The fries were soggy but I am not a big fan of fries anyway so I didn't care so much. They had five different kind of sauces for you to try. Nothing amazing about them. One of them was sriracha sauce. The other big disappointment was the ceviche. It said seafood but it's mostly squid. There were a lot of onions and toasted corn that was inedible. Just imagine half done popcorn (they felt like hard kernel that you could break your teeth trying to chew on them). I have had way better ceviche in the Portland area. Despite my above comment, this place was packed. The dining area is not that big and with minimal decor. The open oven in the back was a nice view. I didn't like the fluorescent lighting too much, felt like sitting in a hospital cafeteria. Prices were reasonable. Service was ok. Food was ok as well. I don't think I would go back here again. I would recommend it if you are curious about Peruvian rotisserie chicken. I just don't think this place is the best representation of it. read more

This place is absolutely worth a visit! The dining room is small, so your attention is immediately drawn towards the large brick oven/rotisserie. The chickens look and smell amazing. I would like to suggest ordering (if you have 2-3 people) the whole chicken, fries, and salad for $18.99. We did not order this, but wish we had after we saw this particular (massive) order coming out of the kitchen and being delivered to other tables. Knowing and seeing the options, I still decided to order the pollo saltado, a dish that I love, but have often been disappointed with at other places. It was very good (and fragrant, as WW said in its review) but the cuts of chicken were tough and grisly, and I found myself trimming it on the plate. But other than that, the mix of rice, rice, cilantro, tomatoes and onions was great. My bf had the lunch special with 1/4th chicken (now this comes right off of the rotisserie) and the chicken was excellent. It came with rice and beans, he described the beans as bland. This ALMOST tops my own dear ma's cooking. Authentic anticuchos, the papa la huancaina was creamy with just the right amount of aji amarillo. The ceviche, mouth watering. The service was very homey but she same around too often to see how we were doing. But then again, it's just like how you would treat your guests at your own home. The prices is so very reasonable.
