This is for the El Jardin in TWAIN HARTE CA couldn't find it on YELP I went there the other day thinking we would try it again bc in the past we haven't received good service. We went in there and the order wasn't right, buss boy had his hat back wards (so unprofessional) when he didn't hear what we said to him he say HUH instead of pardon me. The waiter was early distracted and wasn't very busy. We received 1 basket of chips for a table of 6 people and we had to ask for a 2nd basket. Just over all bad service. Went to this place around 3:30 in the afternoon and had our dog with us. We asked if we could eat on the patio since we had our dog and the waitress said, no, because it is to cold. Wouldn't that be up to the customer? Temperature was 70 degrees. I mean, she only has to come out maybe 3 times for a minute. Yesterday, 04/18/17, my wife and I had a craving for Mexican food and due to recommendations of several friends in Twain Harte we decided to look into El Jardin in Sonora. Berore driving down from Twain Harte we decided to check them out on Yelp. We were shocked by the number of poor to terrible ratings for this establishment - poor service, rude servers, mediocre food, terrible food and on and on. Although there were some good/great ratings it all averaged out to 2 1/2 stars. We convinced ourselves that we would find another restaurant in Sonora since we had to go there anyway. On the drive down from Twain Harte we decided to give El Jardin a try after all, our friends recommendations won out. Were we ever glad that we did; the greeting/seating by a lovely young lady, prompt charming order taking, delivery of our drinks and fresh salsa and chips was handled within minutes of our being seated. We barely finished our chips when two large hot platters of food arrived at our table; combo chili rellenos and michaca enchiladas for both of us, our favorite combos; green sauce for her red for me. The food was very good, so good I thought we must have been at a different restaurant from the one described in the reviews we had read. We had two servers taking care of us during our time there and they were both lovely, happy,polite and friendly young women. We both agreed that we would return for great Mexican food and excellent service. We highly recommend El Jardin and urge anyone to give this place a try and make your own decisions as to it's qualifications. We are very happy that we did! read more

This place is the farthest thing from consistent on this earth! One day pretty good food & service & the next day, absolutely HORRIBLE service- server got our orders all screwed up & never offered to fix them! HORRIBLE sloppy, runny retried beans ( which we did not order) swimming all over the plates, & dripping off sides of plates! Gross! Both orders were screwed up & absolutely lousy!! Chicken was dried up- had to be very old & nothing near fresh- beef was the same! YUK! Should have thrown our money in the street & NOT ordered from this place!! How can a restaurant mess up fajitas and guacamole? This restaurant needs a visit from Gordon Ramsey on the next episode of Hell's Kitchen! The food is NOT fresh, the fajitas are not grilled, and the guac is watery and tasteless. We ate here recently for lunch. It was a Friday and the place was not busy at all. One other table had people at it and three 'twenty something servers' were on duty. We had to ask for everything! Servers were not attentive. The water and iced tea had an 'old pipes' taste to it. She left with my tea to refill and never brought it back. I had to go hunt it down. We visit the one in Turlock often but this one gets crossed off our list. We'll visit the one in Columbia or Twain Harte! Do yourself a favor and do the same! read more

I would love to review the food here but, unfortunately, an awfully rude waitress (blonde straight hair, thinish, tallish) told me that she was not going to be able to seat my party of 7 because we did not have a reservation... and I quote, "if you want to sit together, it'll be at least an hour... if you want to split up it'll beeee (waitress peruses the FIVE open tables) about a half hour..." I guess I don't mind her reasons for not wanting to give us a table, maybe there is a real reason why she couldn't split us up into two of the open tables that were right in front of me... it doesn't matter that we're all from out of town and we drove into downtown Sonora from up the hill in Twain Harte to eat here... all that's fine only she did it with a smug, sh&*-eating attitude face and was probably the most rude waitress i've come accross in a while.. so, el jardin, let's do the math shall we? 7 people at 20 bucks a head that's 140 dollars you just lost because you hired a snot nosed brat to serve your food.. maybe she's your kid? Genetics or not, i would advise rethinking your wait staff. I'll consider attempting to eat here again, maybe... probably not if I have to deal with that chick again... read more

I Love El Jardin! I usually do take-out at the one in Murphys because it is closer to me. However, I meet friends in Sonora for a nice fun meal and enjoy the chicken enchaladas. Mediocre at best. It didn't seem like any of the ingredients were fresh. The beans were runny, the rice had no flavor. The chips and salsa were good. Margarita was fine. If we come back, it'll be to sit on the patio (in the summer) with a drink and chips and salsa. read more

Went for lunch yesterday. I ordered the tostada and hubby ordered the taco and enchilada. Portions were so big, almost too much to eat for a lunch special. We did get to eat outside which was nice but I wasn't impressed with the beans and rice or the chicken. When time to leave, someone was using the phone so we had to leave our card number so she could run it later since they only have dial up. The food was good, the chips / salsa was very good. The reason for the low rating? Our table was dirty (dirty cloth napkin folded on the table with salt and pepper on it as decoration ) and the establishment in general seemed dirty. It needed a broom and some elbow grease. The big thumbs down from our family is NO CHANGING TABLE! How does a place in this day and age not accommodate families? Wow! Surprised by some reviews, but I've only been once-here's my experience. On a Saturday afternoon, went with husband and our friend who has mobility problems. No tables available in pretty courtyard so we went in and chose best table for us. As the nice waitress brought chips and salsa we asked if she had any idea when another patio table might open up. She went and looked, said one would be free shortly, and she'd get us as soon as it was ready. Those patrons left and another waitress went to clean it- ours was in kitchen area. New patrons came in, and wait to take table, so husband and I got up to claim it. Our waitress got there first and apologized to them, saying she'd been holding it for us. So thank you, nice waitress! Helped get everything transferred to new table, blah blah blah, now lunch! Tom had chicken torta, which he said was good, but chicken serving was small. Husband had combo with 1 chile relleno and one enchilada, he also said portions were small but flavor was incredible! I ordered steak fajitas... OMG- sooo GOOD! Flavor was amazing, the portion was crazy big-waaaay too big for me! But I put quite a dent in it! Then I heard one of my favorite words: FLAN- ok people-I may not get out much- but that flan was one of the best I've ever had! Lastly, I read some people had problems with staff- our servers were attentive, helpful, and appeared to be quite happy at their jobs. None of the eye rolling or semi sarcasms that tend to be the undercurrent of young wait staff. All in all a GREAT afternoon! Well, I eat here often do to the fact that I work on Washington St. and it is easy and convenient for a quick lunch. Your food almost always arrives within 15 minutes of ordering it and they are open on Mondays when most other restaurants downtown are closed. That being said, the food here is not very good. I have ordered an ala carte chicken burrito from there, nothing special. It arrived cold, with the tortilla edges hard and stale and it cost $4.19, which is crazy for a small burrito with no beans or rice. I can get a huge one, double the size and meat at the taco truck for $.81 more The lemon chicken salad at the COLUMBIA El Jardin is very delicious, but the one here is Sonora is not good at all. It doesn't have half the ingredients as the one in Columbia. The totrtilla soup has a solid 1 inch layer of cheese at the bottom - very overkill. read more

I really want to give three stars. I like the looks of the place: the tile floor, the outdoor seating, the cute little (full) bar. And I've had a lot of fun here over the years. Great staff. But it comes down to the food. I order the same thing every time I go because I've had other things that were either mediocre or bad. For instance, they still run a lemon chicken special. I like lemon. I like lemon a lot. But let me tell you, that was a lot of pucker. So I have the taco salad with chicken cause you have to try real hard to mess that up. So finally, it was time to leave. We had a three hour trip back to Sacramento and we were anxious to get our checks so we could pay and leave. The waitress broke the entire bill into three checks instead of separate checks and the confusion that followed bordered on the ridiculous. Each person had to go over the three separate checks and find the items that they ordered. So, we had to wait our chance to look at the three checks. Finally, I looked at it and ours was simple since we had only ordered one entrée to share with my wife and she had a glass of wine. During the confusion, someone mentioned that the tip was already included in the price and that was passed around the tables. Each person had to give their credit card with a yellow note on it with the amount that they owed for the bill. Apparently, after we left, all the cards were charged and the payment was still $60.00 short so there was a scene as those left struggled to understand what had happened. The manager came out and talked with some of our family to try to resolve the situation. Finally, he said that if someone didn't pay the final $60 due that the waitress would have to pay for it out of her tips. My brother-in-law's daughter is a waitress and he understands how hard they work and that tips are the major part of their compensation so he paid the final $60 on his credit card. All in all, the entire meal experience was a disaster! We were handled like a herd of cattle instead of feeling appreciated because we had brought so much business to the restaurant. The waitress did an overall good job but the food was mediocre and small for $16 for Taco Bell sized entrees. Most, if not all the complaints here are related to the management which appears to be VERY POOR! Be very careful about eating here especially if you have a large group! What has happened to this once very good Mexican restaurant. Service was terrible. Arrived at approximately 6:35 and didn't leave until after 8:00. They were not busy. Seemed forever to get our food. My three companions thought the food was ok. Just ok. My carnitas were room temperature. When our food came out two of us had to wait another 5 minuets for our entree. I timed how long it took to check out. 10 minuets to get the check and 6 minutes to get credit cards back. Bummer. read more

My family and I had a disastrous experience here. Very little service. Finally brought our food after 45 minutes, but it was food we didn't order. Never got an explanation, never got our food. We left. Staff was very aloof. When I asked for the check and explained we were disappointed, the waitress shrugged in a "so what" way. The restaurant was comfortably full, and, in my opinion, there was staff enough to be able to handle the customers that were there. A very disappointing experience.
