The food is good standard TexMex fare. I really did enjoy the steak tacos which were so large I had to take 2 of 3 tacos home.

I really hate leaving a bad review during this pandemic so I hope I'll be able to try El Jaripeo again during better circumstances. We like many decided to get Mexican on Cinco De Mayo. I tried calling in my order but couldn't get anyone to answer the phone. So I went in to place my order. They were very busy and there was a line outside. There wasn't any sort of order so some had already placed orders and some needed too. When I got to order I asked them to please place all of my items for the nachos separately. I also ordered three tacos with onions and cilantro and two orders of arroz con pollo. It took about an hour for our food and they made you get back in line to pick up your order which made the process even longer. I checked the food in the car and noticed they didn't have any toppings on my tacos as well as the nachos all thrown together. I was super disappointed and due to the line I didn't even bother trying to have my order corrected. read more

The food is wonderful, the atmosphere great, the prices were fine, but the service stinks!!!! I have been there twice, taking a different friend each time. The waiters were so sour & bothered each time I went. Neither waiter checked on us & to ask for something was either dismissed or met with dissatisfaction. Wow. I am blown away by this place. I've been to MANY Mexican restaurants (as it's my favorite type of food) + I have to say we had the best service we've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. Most people would think this is another Tex mex restaurant, but you can taste the authenticity when you try the sopa casera. My boyfriend and I stopped at El Jaripeo tonight and it is definitely NOT Mexican food. Our food tasted like it had been microwaved (rice) & from the can (beans). The food had absolutely NO seasoning or flavor. I ordered tacos de pollo (chicken tacos) & they brought out tacos that looked like Taco Bell's. I was in awe. I asked why they weren't normal Mexican tacos & our waitress told us that the restaurant is TexMex. It doesn't say that on the outside of the building. That restaurant is not Mex anything in terms of food. They brought me flautas/taquitos de pollo & they had no flavor. I asked for the manager & she took my order off of our bill but she was very defensive. She tried to tell me that my taste was a little off because they never get complaints about food & I quickly stopped her & told her I've lived in Mexico. I have family in Tlaxcala & the food tiene sabor (had flavor). That was the worst "Mexican restaurant" experience I've ever had in my life. Taco Bell even has El Jaripeo beat. This place is one of Indiana's best kept secrets!! El Jaripeo shares a parking lot with the Kroger, so it's understandable that in that neighborhood with an unassuming exterior, one might not expect to be wowed.... But I was wowed!! A friend and I decided to grab a late dinner and she recommended the El Jaripeo. The decor is classy and somewhat elegant with dark wood and a beautiful fountain. We were seated and provided menus with a terrific selection. We received excellent service and yummy margaritas. The food was both delicious and the chef's effort resulted in a beautiful plate arranged for visual as well as taste appeal. I'm excited to go again and bring friends! read more

Only giving two stars because the waitress was pretty quick to take our order and the food came out rather quickly. Once food was delivered, we never saw our waitress again, no drink refills, etc. Had to put on our coats and act like we were leaving without paying to finally get our bill. I scouted this place on yelp! when driving across the country to move out west. I never thought Indianapolis would be a hotbed of hispanic restaurants, but there was one on every corner. I figured I wanted to try something different, and landed at El Jaripeo. The place was deceiving at first, as you couldn't see inside and the windows were all blocked up (somewhat alarming). But once inside you realize the place is pretty big, with three sections of seating in three fairly large rooms and a ton of decor (which explained the lack of window to the outside world). The place was really crowded on a Tuesday night before Thanksgiving, a tell that it was a pretty popular place. The food was pretty good, and overall it was a good time. The only downside was our waiter, who was not too congenial and rushed our order and our dinner in general. So minus one star to that affect. Still, I would suggest this place to anyone from the area or passing through-- its always great to avoid the chains and support the uniqueness of restaurants like this. read more

Awesome! This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant ever. It is one of those hole in the wall places, but the food is perfect. Great Salsa. The Margarita's are super - be careful. Very spacious Mexican restaurant on the far east side. The servers are much friendlier than at many similar Mexican places, with some actually being conversational. There are nice murals painted on the walls and ample space between you and the other diners. I had Carne Asada soft tacos and the meat didn't have a lot of flavor, but was passable. My companion had Pork Carnitas and it was great! Moist, tasty cubes of pork. Refried beans and rice were tasty (I know they're "automatic" but at some places they're pretty gross). Our water glasses stayed full, and I liked that when the server brought our check he asked if we needed anything else, then let us know we could pay up front whenever we were ready. Also, if you like to recycle, there are bins in the SAME parking lot! The bins are on the west side of the Kroger lot and El Jaripeo is on the east side. I've eaten here a dozen or so times, maybe more, including today. I like it more than most of the cookie-cutter Mexican joints here. I'd say the food is above average. The margaritas are good, and they have drink specials. The salsa is good, and they keep it coming. My only knocks on the place would be that it's really big and not always very well staffed, especially during the day. Service can be a tad slow. Not molasses slow, just a little bit of a wait at times. Also, a couple times I've had to send back food that wasn't prepared correctly (nothing major, just not the way I asked the server for it). Lastly, and it's just a pet peeve, I've ordered things on the menu that didn't come with guacamole included, and I asked for it and offered to pay extra (numerous things on the menu come with a small amount of guacamole and lettuce/tomatoes, which is all I really wanted), and they said all they could do was charge me for a whole bowl of guacamole dip. Not that same thing, amigos. But they have good, authentic food, a diverse menu and an interesting selection of Mexican beer at reasonable prices. So I come here a lot. You probably should too if you live or work on this side of town, especially if your other choice is that Mexican place a little bit up Washington Street, on the corner of Mitthoeffer. I had the Shrimp Burritos, only suggestion would be to have the cheese sauce not so thin because it just drenched everything and it "wet." One of my best friends [hailing from the east side] loves this place. I was hoping I could say the same after dining in, midday/post lunchtime on a Saturday. My burrito wasn't anything special, nor was service. For being sparsely busy while we dined, service was fairly bad. We got drinks after about 15 minutes of trying to flag down someone, then had to wait what seemed like forever for chips & salsa & queso [and chip refills]. The chips and queso & salsa were amazing though, as well as my friend's usual [a steak burrito with some sides added in]. Once we got our main food our server really played a good disappearing act. I know I'm not giving it a 5 but I'm giving it a 4.5 on here. I've come here to eat a few times and the first time was absolutely delicious . But the second time was not I ordered a chimichanga meal and it was mostly filled with onions and peppers rather than meat. so I did discuss it with the waiter and he just seemed to kind of brush it off like I should have expected that. so and that visit it was not the greatest. I do have to say they do give you good size portions and they have a normal pretty standard Mexican restaurant menu. They also have a very open space so that's nice although it can get a little loud in here it's not unbearable. I love El Jaripeo. I always order the steak and shrimp. If you carry out plan on having it in 10-15 minutes and that is not a joke. I've gotten carry out countless times and NEVER have I waited. If you dine in plan on feeling all snuggly and comfy. There is something about the ambiance of that restaurant and the staff that make you feel like you just happened to stop by your abuela's and she was up cooking all of your favorites. Stop by after sundown with a date sometime too. It's got a nice romantic feel and some margaritas that pack a punch. read more

I forgot how amazing this place is!!! My Burrito Asada was orgasmic, S.O. and I refrained from talking for a while as we were too busy devouring our plates. My meat was perfectly charred, overflowing, and wrapped in a beautiful tortilla sprinkled with pico de gallo which neutralized the cheese slathered over it.YUM! Heavy for my asian tummy but you don't go to a mexican restaurant and expect to leave with a light feeling hahaha Well worth every calorie!!! This rating was more for the service, which would have been a zero star rating. The food was good, but not exceptional. The margarita - now that was exceptional! The waitress didn't try to be friendly. She rolled her eyes when I asked for a spoon. Our meals were delivered relatively quickly, but there was no checking on us after that point. No refills on drinks, or clearing plates when we were done eating. We were there at about 2pm, so the place was fairly empty. Finally, my friend flagged down a male server who came to our aid. He was really on it & quite friendly. Maybe our experience with this rude waitress was a one off, but I think I'll stick with La Parada for my Mexican food. read more

I Took my wife to El Jaripeo the food was very good, but the service was lousy. My wife has an allergy to all dairy we informed the waiter of this. And were served beans and rice with cheese. Also I ordered Iced tea, and received coke. When I told the waiter about the mistake, I got no apology, he just gave me a iced tea and left the coke on the table. Also no used dishes were removed from the table. When we went to pay for our meal, the cashier talked to a waitress the whole time we stood there waiting for our card to go through (we have the chip). Not once did he ask how we enjoyed our meal, or was our service okay. In fact he ignored us completely. He didn't even say goodbye or come back. Needless to say we won't be going back. Felt welcomed when we walked in and our waitress was very nice. Food was good and close to the AMC theatre where we were going to catch a movie!! Definitely go Just went back and they were super slow on a Tuesday night and the shell on the taco salad tasted gross!! Told our waitress and the manager that rang us up and they didn't even offer us a discount. They also did not refill our chips and salsa. Will not be going back. We don't get to the east side that often, but our schedule had us there last night and we found ourselves needing a quick and delicious dinner. We had been to El Jaripeo at their old location across the street several years ago and just loved it - so we decided to visit them at the new locale. Wow. Just...wow. It seems that everything has gone down hill. Oh, sure...the new digs are nice and picturesque and spacious compared to the other location, but at what cost? The food was "Americanized Authentic" at best. And the service...well...so much for a quick dinner. When we go out for Mexican we always go to an authentic, non-chain restaurant because that's what we enjoy. But our food was FAR from authentic. The robust heat of a good salsa was not realized here. It was bland, tasted as if it came out of a jar, and...I agree with another person's previous review: it was closer to cocktail sauce than salsa - way too salty and not refrigerated (which, again, lines up with being from a jar versus freshly made). The entrees were underwhelming. I feel like we could have gotten the same dishes at a non-Mexican establishment. Very Americanized. We split a dessert, and it too lacked flavor. This was just an all-around disappointing trip in the food department. Now...let's talk about the service. We were there during the late afternoon - between lunch and dinner. When we walked in we probably ended up being one of maybe six tables in the whole establishment. What should have easily been a 30 minute dining trip ended up being an hour and fifteen minutes. Our server was pleasant, yet under-attentive. He asked what we wanted/needed but didn't deliver in a reasonable amount of time. He even apologized for the delays...yet ended up continuing to be slow. I don't think we'll be back. On our way back to the interstate, we were already scoping out other Mexican restaurants on East Washington Street that we could have tried instead. read more
