I have been to this restaurant many, many times and have ordered take out many, many times. Tonight I called to place an order on my way home and got a girl on the phone and when I told her what I wanted, I could not understand anything she was saying. I didn't know if the item was unavailable or what. She had a very strong Hispanic accent, but that was not the reason I could not understand her. She spoke so fast it was impossible to understand. I finally said I didn't understand anything you said and she says "call back maybe you will get someone else" and hangs up. I was floored, I wasn't rude, all I wanted to do was place an order. So I call back and she answers. I said didn't I just talk to you and she says "yes" and I asked to speak to the manager. She starts raving on again so fast I do not know what she was saying about her manager. She then hangs up yet again. So I stop there on my way home and talk to the manager, who really could have cared less. He said she put him on the phone and I wasn't on the line. I said because she hung up on me again. He says he doesn't know who it was, I told him she had a strong accent and he says with a smirk, we all do. I had no problem understanding him! He says, so what do you want me to do? As a manager, you would think he would have at least apologized and said he would speak to the people that answer the phone. I know I can't be the only one that has been treated like this. I realize they are very busy on Friday night, all she had to do was be polite. Anyway, not that they will care, but they have lost my business. Lots of restaurants have good food. read more

When we first started eating here the food was good and everything was freshly prepared even throughout this COVID-19 situation the world has been going through. The past couple of times we have ordered from here we have noticed the food quality has been dropping off, but today was the icing on the cake. We ordered steak nachos and some taco's what we received was chips with beans and some melted cheese with no steak or anything else and the taco's were dried out reheated meat with no flavor with old cilantro and onions piled on top of the meat. We have recommended this place to many people about how good this place was and now we are embarrassed about ever saying anything. read more

I would give this place 10 stars if I could. Their lengua is killer. The carnitas are painfully good. Their cheesesteak tacos are stupidly fantastic. I dream of this place. Attentive service, great margaritas, food is amazing, place is always clean, and they are really friendly. Food usually comes out really fast. Visited this location for the first time with my family. As we walked in we were greeted in a friendly manner. The server noticed we had children and worked at getting us settled. Once we ordered the food was out in a timely manner. The food tasted like a typical Mexican restaurant. Not saying that's a bad thing! Will definitely be bringing back my family. read more

This restaurant has very generous portion sizing at an excellent price! The food is very solid; I'm never disappointed with what I get. I love their fresh salsa & chips and I've heard great things about their queso. Your stomach will thank you for choosing it over places like Taco Bell, that usually have much more inflammatory additives in their food products. This location is excellent. A new one just opened up about 6 months ago in Hobart at the corner of Ripley and Ridge. I would always stop here when passing by LOFS. Now, I have my favorite restaurant only 2 miles from where I live in Hobart. Very poor experience. First thing we were seated at a booth that the bench was broken like sitting in a hole. They knowingly sat us there and said there are actually 2 booths with broken seats. My food was terrible. The chicken breast and skirt steak were less than 1/4 inch thick and 2 1/2" across. And like leather. The shrimp was obviously frozen and small as well. I was going to take a picture of my food tonight before I ate it, but I was so excited, I forgot! Lol!! When we moved to Winfield a year ago, I was worried I wouldn't find a Mexican restaurant I loved because I love Mexican food!! I shouldn't have worried though because I found el jimador, and they are awesome!!! I am a creature of habit when it comes to Mexican food, and I love steak sopes without lettuce and all rice no beans on the side The sopes are topped with tomato, cheese, sour cream, and avacado. That is my go to order! My husband usually orders the steak tacos or the Gordo burrito, and he likes them both. I am never disappointed when we order from this restaurant, which is at least once a week! Since we have little kids, we usually order carry out, and they do a great job! The restaurant itself is kind of small, so it can be difficult to get a table at times, but that's okay because a wait means their is something worth waiting for!! So here's the thing...I LOVE chicken enchiladas and these fall short because they are missing flavor. When I go out for mexican I always order chicken enchiladas...I don't eat out alot anymore so when I do, I want what I want... and I really want it to be awesome. I will sacrifice service for satisfaction over a dish. I have been here twice and both times was very disappointed with the food. I feel like everything taste flat as though it's missing that something...spice, salt, seasoning?...it's not there. The place is clean and the servers are very nice but the food is Okay. If i could give it no stars i would. the beans are always dry & they always put cheese on my beans.... if i ask for no cheese on my entree what makes you think i want cheese on my beans? they messed up my order now 2x in a row. the last time i ate there was 2 months ago, and they made me wait around for 25 minutes before even SEATING me and another 50 for my food, and there was maybe 3 families there at the time.... i was late getting back to work. the customer service is terrible and so is the food. read more

Nothing fancy, but this place was great. My wife and I were looking for good Mexican food heading to Merrillville. I read the reviews on El Jimador and we both thought they had their friends giving good reviews. Closer to home we gave it a try. This place was very clean and the food was fresh and very tasty. I had their 27 oz margarita and it was not over powering with booze and tasted great with the monster steak burrito with cheese. My wife had the combo plate with ice tea. She said the tea was some of the best she ever had and her food was fresh and tasty. If you are looking for excellent Mexican food at a very reasonable price you have to try EL Jimador next to the Four Season subdivision in Crown Point. This is a hidden gem and you need to try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed. read more

Palatable food, but not particularly jovial service. The portions are large, and the menu is pretty standard Mexican fare. I judge most Mexican restaurants on their salsa, and I wasn't particularly impressed with theirs. We got the bottom of the pan for our beans (I watched them being scraped out), as well, so they weren't very good either. The meats, however, were fairly good, and the burritos are absolutely stuffed with it. A pretty standard "quantity over quality" approach typical of most small, independent Mexican restaurants. However, the restaurant was generally clean, with simple decoration and ample seating, and the prices weren't outrageous. They do have take out (which I did), but the sense of urgency is somewhat lacking...so, if you're in a rush, probably best to call ahead. Because of the lack of options in Winfield, I have to admit to being somewhat pleased that there is at least something other than pizza on offer, but the truth is, for a short drive, you can get better Mexican food at La Carreta, and cheaper, similar quality food at Taco Depot. Convenience only goes so far. All that said, I will likely return to give it another try, but it'll be in a pinch. A suggestion for the owners and servers: a sunnier disposition and a little attentiveness goes a long way with customers, particularly in our fickle community. During my thirty minute wait for my take out dinner, the employees seemed far more interested in the soccer game on the televisions than the fact that I was in their place of business. The best ground beef (with everything) nachos we've EVER had! They're so large, flavorful, and filling that it is easy to order as your meal and you won't be able to finish them. As an Austin, TX "ex-pat", it is nearly impossible to find genuine mexican food in NWI. We change up our orders frequently, yet they usually remember our silly requests (i.e. no rice double beans), even if I forget to mention them! In 3+ years we've NEVER had bad service, and for a place that we frequent, I'd assume that would be impossible! Even on psychotically busy nights like Cinco de Mayo they all worked together like a perfectly oiled machine. Their pico and red sauce are made fresh, and they will try to honor almost any special request if they have the ingredient. They even make us nachos with no chips for our low carb days! Their prices are surprisingly low and the chefs clearly take pride in the food they create. If you're not a fan of mexican, start with their giant burrito. If you're a foodie, have fun! I personally love their cheese chile rellenos. My husband's life would be more complete if they served barbacoa, and mine if they served carne guisada!
