Came here for dinner with the family before moving onto the next place while on vacation. It was a nice meal. No problems with seating our party of 6 tonight. The brand new Mexican place a few doors down was much more busy than here, but our guests said they've been to El Mezcal many times and is a local favorite. The frozen peach and lime margaritas were nice and boozy. The fajita nachos did not come out as an appetizer as requested but instead with the rest of our orders which also did not come out together. My kids' chimichangas were excellent. One even thought it to be better than our local Mexican restaurant at home which is saying a lot. My Fajitas were more than filled with shrimp, chorizo, chicken, and steak. The guacamole, pico, and rice and beans were flavorful. Beans were actually kicking with some spice. Wife and I got two shots of what I think was maraschino cherry flavored tequila gratis. What a nice touch. Overall, a nice meal. Restaurant seemed a bit dingy and dark. Had some TVs showing baseball this evening. Mexican style music was loud on the sound system. Service was attentive and pleasant. Not sure of the bill total as I did not have to pay today! read more

Loved the fast service and delicious food! I got the spinach and cheese quesadilla and they had a great vegetarian section (9/10) and my husband got the chicken fajitas (7/10). I have gone to El Mezcal for years. They used to be the best Mexican restaurant in town. Anymore the food is inconsistent. I get the same order every time, chicken fajitas. Sometimes it has a lot of chicken sometimes it's mostly vegetables. Today it was mostly vegetables. Food consistency is a big deal with me. If I don't know what to expect when I get your food I'll just stop getting your food. Do better El Mezcal, you now have competition in town. El Mezcal is the closest Mexican restaurant to my new home. It's not the best, but when you're craving some South of the Border fare, it does the trick. Actually, I think as with any restaurant I need to discover what is good and stick with that as a standard order. The Margaritas are not hand shaken, but they satisfy the craving. I paired mine with a half order of Chicken Nachos with added jalapeños. This is a dish worth repeating. The tortilla chips were heavily topped with both shredded chicken, diced jalapeños and that good ole white Mexican cheese. In addition to my nachos, I ordered a Beef Burrito and a Fried Taco off the Sides menu. Being ordered as a side, I thought they'd be smaller. I was wrong, I ordered way to much food. However, on the bright side I got to experience more of their menu. The beef burrito was your typical fast casual Mexican, it was satisfying, but not memorable. I don't remember fried tacos being a thing in STL, except for Jack in the Box. Over here in IL, every Mexican or river pub offers, "Fried Tacos". Personally, just give me a classic crunchy taco or a soft taco and I'm a happy camper. Thus far, I have only experienced one fried taco that I've liked and the one here wasn't it. I will not be ordering the one from here again, it was just to weird. The service was attentive and they were doing a decent job following the guidelines for safe dining during this pandemic. Mask were being worn by all visible staff and they required all guest to wear them upon entry and moving about the restaurant. Service was not had to ask another waitress to get our waiter just to order drinks then he disappeared and we were waiting a good 10-15 mins he finally comes back and we order I asked for queso for my chips and he leaves doesn't come back for another 15 mins finally brings the food and got half the order wrong goes back and brings out the right order and before we could get a word out he walks away again. I asked another waiter for some queso and they finally bring it out. We are waiting about 10mins tried to get a waiter attention just to get us refills and he says "hold on" and walks away finally comes back and gives us refills and the check. Then the check was over 5.40 there was 4 of us and it wasn't tax we asked about it they charge parties 2 or more automatic tip fee. So there planning on there waiters being trash. read more

Food is amazing, everytime we go our waiter always gets it right! And if it just so happenes to be wrong they fix it right away!!

They are very nice. I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican food but add some hot sauce and it's pretty good.

Again, I really need to get some new friends, all I seem to do lately is have Mexican food. Luckily the last few places have been good. We went to El Mezcal for a quick lunch, quick and tasty I might add. They have 11 different lunch specials, all under $7. I feel this is a good deal because with the chips and salsa it keeps the belly full all afternoon. I had the chicken soft tacos, very tasty. Next time I hope to try the margarita's. read more

Some of the most tender, juicy, and flavorful pork you'll ever taste, wrapped in two perfectly warm corn tortillas, and smothered with cilantro, pico, and more. Put your own beans and salsa on it, and you're in heaven. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point- it's incredible! Also at our table, my family was raving about the Hawaiian fajitas, quesadillas, and chips and salsa. Not the first time I've experienced bad service and food quality at this location. Called to place pickup order. Took 3 times before anyone finally answered. When he did answer and took our order, he wouldn't give us a total for our order over the phone and instead said we would get one when we got our food (maybe it's unnatural to ask for a total for the order before picking it up...they've provided a total for our orders over the phone before?) Fiancé went to go get the food, he said it wasn't busy. They forgot chips and salsa and didn't bother to ask if we wanted it when called in the order so I assumed they would give us complimentary chips and salsa as usual (my mistake for assuming). Food was warm at best, my quesadilla was undercooked (not a single grilled spot on it), soggy, and drenched in grease. Overall poor service and food. Went for lunch at 1:00pm on Friday, 9/20/2013. Parking and seating were fine. It was around 70-degrees and rainy outside, but very warm inside. Sitting over a plate of sizzling steak fajitas was very uncomfortable. The red salsa had a slight kick but was very boring and really no better than something you'd buy at the store. Chips were nice and light, very little grease/oil. Steak fajitas were bland. The meat had very little flavor beyond 'meat' and 'char' from the grill/griddle. The flour tortillas were obviously warmed in a microwave because they clearly never touched a grill/griddle. Refried beans and rice were typical fare. Service was fairly quick and prompt, but the staff barely said a word and made me feel like they didn't really want to be serving me. I don't need to be gushed over, but I do need to be made to feel welcome, which I wasn't. Pricing was about what you'd expect for the Alton area, but I highly doubt I'll return. read more
