El Mezcal is the closest Mexican restaurant to my new home. It's not the best, but when you're craving some South of the Border fare, it does the trick. Actually, I think as with any restaurant I need to discover what is good and stick with that as a standard order. The Margaritas are not hand shaken, but they satisfy the craving. I paired mine with a half order of Chicken Nachos with added jalapeños. This is a dish worth repeating. The tortilla chips were heavily topped with both shredded chicken, diced jalapeños and that good ole white Mexican cheese. In addition to my nachos, I ordered a Beef Burrito and a Fried Taco off the Sides menu. Being ordered as a side, I thought they'd be smaller. I was wrong, I ordered way to much food. However, on the bright side I got to experience more of their menu. The beef burrito was your typical fast casual Mexican, it was satisfying, but not memorable. I don't remember fried tacos being a thing in STL, except for Jack in the Box. Over here in IL, every Mexican or river pub offers, "Fried Tacos". Personally, just give me a classic crunchy taco or a soft taco and I'm a happy camper. Thus far, I have only experienced one fried taco that I've liked and the one here wasn't it. I will not be ordering the one from here again, it was just to weird. The service was attentive and they were doing a decent job following the guidelines for safe dining during this pandemic. Mask were being worn by all visible staff and they required all guest to wear them upon entry and moving about the restaurant. A fellow Yelper recommends the Carnitas Tacos, so they'll be the next thing I order. When: February 22, 2021 Why: Dinner

Authentic delicious Mexican food and margaritas! Their Chicken nachos and taco salad and so many other dishes are amazingly delicious!

Again, I really need to get some new friends, all I seem to do lately is have Mexican food. Luckily the last few places have been good. We went to El Mezcal for a quick lunch, quick and tasty I might add. They have 11 different lunch specials, all under $7. I feel this is a good deal because with the chips and salsa it keeps the belly full all afternoon. I had the chicken soft tacos, very tasty. Next time I hope to try the margarita's.

Well worth the drive from Caseyville, Illinois. The flavors remind me of the food I enjoyed in El Paso, but haven't tasted since. We will definitely be coming back!

So when I go, I know my experience will be top notch. It was Taco Tuesday and I was actually craving a taco. Normally when dining at Riviera and wanting tacos, I order their shrimp. This Tuesday, I changed things up and ordered, shredded chicken. It was simply made in a soft tortilla shell with only shredded lettuce and cheese. The chicken was tender, juicy and seasoned well. I topped the tacos with some of the salsa that was served with the complimentary chips. They really hit the spot on this Taco Tuesday. The tacos are served 3 to an order with a side of Mexican Rice. I added a side of Refried Beans to my order. I don't eat my beans and rice separately, I mix the two together creating a totally different texture and taste. I even mix in some salsa to give it an extra kick. I learned the trick of mixing the two from another diner at another Mexican restaurant. I saw her doing it and once I tried it myself, I've never stopped. You can't have tacos without a Margarita and the Top Shelf Mags here are very refreshing. I don't do salt on my rim, but you can if you want. Their glasses are thick glassed, so they are heavy. Lifting them is like a gym workout, so you're burning calories as you're drinking them. Service is always friendly and attentive. Even as a lone diner, they always check back with me to make sure everything is okay. With this heat wave we're having, I dined on the inside, but their patio is pretty relaxing.

Because, when I do come, I enjoy my experience. The other day I stopped in for lunch and in the foyer, they had a board with weekly specials. One of the specials was, Shrimp Chimichanga. That made my decision real easy. Shrimp Tacos and Quesadillas are my favorite Mexican foods, so why not try a Chimichanga. It came with Refried Beans and Rice. It also has small servings of Guacamole and Sour Cream. The shrimp inside my Chimichanga were good sized and if memory serves me right, there were 8 stuffed inside. If not 8, it was 6 and it filled it to the brim. I love it when an entree has Guacamole, that way you can use it with your chips as you enjoy your entree. It also allows me to order good ole White Cheese Dip at the beginning, to enjoy with the complimentary Chips and Salsa. When I was served mine, the chips were still warm. Nothing beats a fresh warm chip dipped in salsa and white cheese. Dining alone makes it acceptable to double dip mixing the two together. A Margarita was my adult beverage of choice. I enjoyed a Jumbo sized and it lasted me through my appetizer and entree. To my delight, it was served to me in a frosted Margarita glass. I was frosted better than some beer mugs I have had. My server was friendly and attentive. In addition to waiting on tables, he was busy wrapping silverware and his multi-tasking did not take away from quality service. I plan to keep Taqueria Maya in my rotation of Mexican restaurants. It's worth the drive and worth passing by some of their competitors, to enjoy their quality of food.

The birria that I ordered wasn't necessarily the best, but I'd certainly go back to try something else.
