My squad and I got rained out of Central Park (Weatherman said 20% chance of rain but it monsooned out there, smh). So we were looking for a place nearby that could accommodate a group in moist casual clothes. With a little bit of a wait, this place obliged and we were very grateful. Standard Mexican fare. The food was good but what really stood out was their drinks. Margaritas etc. but with so many flavors and so strong! In my opinion, that's the real reason to go. We were here on a Wednesday night, which was unseasonably warm. There was a long line and the staff took our name. However, he gave a table to another couple that arrived way after we did. I could see on the list of names that he crossed their name off and it was below ours, which was a little upsetting as we had been waiting quite a bit by then. The food was just so-so. I am not amazed easily but when I ordered the corn on the cob with the cheese and the whole nine years and instead got a bowl of delishesness I fell in love. This place makes it easy and delish for you to eat a corn on the cob beacuse they take it off the cobb and put it in a bowl for you. Good tacos but the portions were smaller than I expected. Good, dependable margaritas. Service was good. The place was pretty loud, though.

Very good food, nice vibes for sure, and the margaritas are strong af (just like I like them!) This was an accidental find while we kill time before our movie. I must say, I'm glad we found this spot because it is the perfect date spot before a movie! The pescado tacos are divine! You get 3 tacos for $14 and they're small but so filling. The flour is perfection and just hits the spot. I am also so happy with their guacamole! You'll be surprised how easy folks in nyc mess up guacamole- but this place gets it, they know what's up! I was looking forward to eating here since I miss So Cal Mexican food. Service was slow. If you want chips, you gotta pay for them. Menu is way way overpriced. Ordered flautas and was deeply disappointed. Had to ask for salsa and was given thimble sized servings in plastic cups. For the price I paid for those underwhelming flautas, I'd expect to get an entire molcajete of salsa. Will not be returning to this establishment. read more

Probably some of the best Mexican I've had in the city! The portions aren't enormous but the taste packed a punch. I had the lamb barbocoa burrito and it wasn't too oily or salty. The homemade red hot sauce was spicy and the red creamy sauce had plenty of zest. Their tamarind and virgin pineapple drink is excellent too. Their current menu says - right after the list of tacos, "Extra lime - $1.50." So, in plain English, that means that you receive lime with your tacos, like any normal Mexican establishment. I understand that if you ask for EXTRA lime, you have to pay $1.50. I ordered mushroom tacos, and did not receive any lime. I asked for lime, and received it. When the check came, I saw that I was charged $1.50 for it. I have never, ever, ever been charged for lime with my tacos - at any Mexican restaurant ever, or at the six times or so that I've been to El Mitote. I brought this up to our server, who then got super sassy, and said that EVERY taco on the menu came with lime, EXCEPT for the mushroom taco. Uh-huh. Well, Mr. Sassy Server, that's not what your menu says. It says under the tacos, you pay $1.50 if you ask for EXTRA lime. It does not say, "Extra lime for $1.50, except for the mushroom tacos, which do not come with lime and for which you have to pay extra for just to have lime in the first place." Nope. I wasn't having it .So he reimbursed me the $1.50, then came back to say pointedly, "Now you know that it doesn't come with lime." Good for you, man! You got the last say! For Chrisssssake, just go to any other Mexican establishment in the city that offers chips and salsa and lime with their tacos and builds it into the price like they should. read more

What appears to be an easy-going Mexican food spot turns out to be a rather rigid menu with charging for what most restaurants provide free of charge (e.g., $1.50 for an extra slice of lime). Spent $72 on guac w/ chips, 1 burrito, 1 plain tostada (no meat), and 2 beers. Don't even ask for salsa to go with your guac and chips; that's extra too. All of this was served up by a waiter who looked slightly annoyed when taking our order. Not worth it! read more

This is probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in NYC. The food has a very similar taste of what you could find in Mexico, specially in Guadalajara and it makes me feel at home. The service is great, they always welcome you with a smile and they have bilingual servers which is a plus for all latino diners. The vibe and music is super cool because it's not your usual banda and mariachi, they have actual modern Mexican music like rock bands or alternative, wich I really appreciate. I would recommend to get the tortas, because they are delicious and you don't find it very often in other Mexican restaurants. Also please don't go without trying their guacamole! The guac is fantastic and generous. The steak burrito and the dinner platters also very good. The people are attentive.

They have a great half priced happy hour here with strong and big drinks. I like coming here after work. It can get a bit crowded but love a good happy hour. The first time I was here, I had a torta and it was the best thing I ever had. I came here recently, ordered a carnitas torta and it was not as good as I remember. I think I ordered the braised pork one the first time because I remember the meat being shredded and so tender, plus it was after a couple drinks. I'll just have to come back and try again. The service my last visit was a little spotty. Took our waiter awhile to get to us. He did tell us there was a backup in the kitchen at some point but we were in no hurry. We did have to ask for chips and salsa. When he brought out the salsa he told us that it was on the house because of the backup. But paying for salsa...? El Mitote is a constant staple and an easy lunch stop. Tacos are good, margaritas (I had in the past for dinner) are strong, and the service is pretty fast. This is a casual establishment. Guacamole is a good starter, I had the fish tacos which are excellent, and then we had an order of churros. I could live without the churros, but the dulce de leche sauce was amazing and made it worth it. The price is relatively fine, but you could definitely get quick, casual, quality tacos elsewhere for a better price. read more

Popped into the restaurant on a whim. This place is always packed for a reason (but not so packed that you can't get a seat). Ok. So the food here is terrific. I dig that it's close like around the corner a 200 meter walk. But every time I or we (my partner) come here, it's cold inside. She hates the cold and wants to leave. Even in mid summer the inside is too cold for her and for me so we go outside. You have to be in a parka to sit at the bar. Am here now and now counting 3 couples who have left because it is just chilly in here (yes - take note older couples who have been the staple of this 'hood). And the dish should not be cold mid meal because of the wind storm at the bar. Only reason I am still here is this text with my son who lives one block from me, knows the joint because I turned him on to it. Turn the ceiling fans off, maybe come up with a better ventilation for the kitchen staff as I know and agree it's about their comfort but let's not forget the comfort of the people paying the bill...right? read more

I have been a patron and big fan for a long time. I have spent thousands of dollars on dinners treating friends and family here but after my experience today, I will never go back. I ordered a quesadilla for pick up and when I called it in I specifically asked for either a small side of hot sauce or spicy salsa. I pick up my order and as I'm walking away I check my bag to make sure I have my sauce and there is none in there. I go back to the counter and kindly ask the host for some hot sauce and he tells me the quesadilla doesn't come with hot sauce and if I want some I have to pay $1.50 for it. I told him I wanted a tiny side cup of it not a significant amount and he still told me I had to pay for it. I'm appalled that after spending so much money there they couldn't provide me with a tiny amount of hot sauce that doesn't even cost them 5 cents. Whenever you go to a Mexican restaurant and pick up food they never charge you for that - heck if it was a home made fancy salsa sure I can understand but I very clearly asked for a tiny amount from a glass bottle they have and the guy said no. Hidden GEM! Best guac i've ever had, and I've tried quite a few. Esquites had the right level of spice and the tacos (carnitas) were flavorful and packed with meat.
