So I'm not even sure why I'm giving this place 2 stars but I did get what I ordered and the service was ok and the place is cute but that's about it. This place is always crowded and the food always looks great on everyone else's plate but whenever I go there I'm always disappointed. We always get chips and guac. The chips are not warm like other places and they taste stale. The guac was good but have had better. My tostadas looked pretty but it was all lettuce and cheese disguised as a tostada. What I thought were beans turned out to be tiny pieces of steak. Not much flavor at all so I dumped my salsa on it which wasn't very good either. If you are walking by, and see an empty seat anywhere - snag it and enjoy a margarita. This place is ALWAYS packed. When i moved to the neighborhood i made it a personal goal to stop in for a drink as soon as i was able to find a spot! You know that's a sign of a great restaurant! Service is amazing so you can be in / out pretty quickly, but they also will never make you feel rushed. Spicy margaritas are amazing and personally one of my favorites in the area. The margarita was absolutely the worst I've ever had ... tasted like straight vodka with a splash of lime juice. $15???????????? The waiter simply never appeared. I prefer to get my drink, peruse the menu over an appetizer (guacamole dip for $14?????) which meant that anything I wanted from that point on, I'd better get it myself. I got up to get the menu, ask for water, try and track down the waiter as I was ready to order (he was eating soup at the bar). The food was mediocre at best. Next time I want Mexican I'll take a subway to somewhere reasonable and good ... two words El Mitote doesn't k ow the meaning of. Just a HORRIBLE experience. And for only $75!! I gave this place four stars because they make a pretty damn good margarita that bears their name. I'm not talking about the frozen one. Margarita was not overly sweet and the tequila was good quality I had the mushroom taco and al pastor, the guacamole with chips. And I tried a fish taco. Everything was pretty good. The guacamole could've used a little more spice, but the avocado was ripe and delicious Now I live on the Lower East Side where we have good food at affordable prices 24 hours a day, but for the upper West side, this place is great. It's a little cramped, some tables are a little close to the kitchen and hot as a result, but all in all this is the best you're going to find in this area with overpaying. Got some grub around the imax theater in Lincoln center to kill time to see The Batman. Wanted to get some food and my dad put me onto to this spot. What happened to the old El Mitote? I used to live directly across the street from this place and this was my go-to dinner spot at least two days a week. That's how good the food and service used to be. To kick things off, the service was horrible. When we arrived and stood at the hostess stand, we were just told to pick a table, no warm greeting or even a simple hello. Was cold and impersonal. Now on to the food. I ordered the Bistec platter and although the food came super fast, it was not very tasty and the portions were cut in half, nothing like how I remember. The steak was bland and chewy, the beans tasted as if someone opened a can of Goya black beans and poured them in a bowl and the serving size of the rice was just a little more than a table spoon; literally. Not worth $22 or the total of $57 that we paid. Also, the tables are very close together so do plan on your conversation being shared with the table right next to yours. There are plenty other Mexican restaurants that are better tasting and better value for your money. I recommend Street Tacos on 103rd and Broadway which is only 4 additional stops from this place on the 1 train. read more

Absolutely delicious food - perhaps the most flavorful, authentic Mexican on the Upper West Side. We went on a busy Friday night and the service wasn't as attentive as it could've been; however, given how busy it was, it's understandable. There are tight quarters on the inside, but the decor and restaurant's square footage contributes to the feel of a Mexico City taquería. We sat outside and were promptly given menus and water. Since it was a mexican place we had to order some guacamole. They say its made fresh but it came out 10 seconds after we ordered it. My guess is they make a big "fresh" batch so they can pump it out quick. It was good but if made one the spot it would be better. For lunch I had the salad with chicken and it was good. The salad was a little underdressed which is better than overdressed and had some unique flavors. The chicken was in little pieces and seemed sauteed with simple salt/pepper. It all worked though. I love their set up for Covid 19 and it is always bustling here. Everytime I come here I feel like their service is slow and not too nice. Even with people waiting around, they take forever to process check or bring food. My husband and I live their frozen margarita. It is tasty and pretty strong.
