Now we've tried many more menu items and everything has been really great! It tastes like everything we've had has been made from scratch, and both the corn and flour tortillas are scratch made. That makes their burritos heavenly. I can't say enough good things about their beans, if I only had beans and corn tortillas I would have a feast. But the other foods are just too good to pass up. The food was awful. My husband had the Carne asada, it was very dry. His grilled onions were good. I had the shrimp enchiladas, the sauce tasted out of a can. But the rice was ok. The service was good. Nice waitress, very attentive. But the food was way too expensive, $42 dollars for okay rice, tasty onions, bland fish tacos, and awful everything else... waste of money! never again. Don't recommend to anyone. The best thing to ever order here are the Empanadas De Camaron (shrimp turnovers) They are served with a very spicy green salsa...delicious (if you don't mind your nose running a bit because of the heat) You may have to call ahead to see if they have any made because they run out often. We have ordered several other items on the menu and it's been "okay". We recently ordered the Mojarra Frita (whole deep fried perch)and it was a little lacking in flavor. We added lots of lemon and salt and it helped but garlic would have been a good addition. The homemade tortillas made it better but not enough to order again. A few of my coworkers suggested we go here and they had great tortillas homemade and everything on their menu was good. I always end up craving Carne asada however since they were out of this, which is a high disappointment to me and very surprising for them being a Mexican food restaurant, I ordered chicken flautas which were not up to par. My husband ordered fish tacos which you did get a large fish piece in the taco but it lacked flavor. The place was run down and dirty and deathly in need to get a deep cleaning and an update. A few days after we went they ended up closing down for a remodel. We have not tried them again to see if anything improved but all I heard was that they added some paint but it was still dirty. The Carne Asade burrito was 1/2 a side of dried meat no onions or anything and the other side was dried cold hard beans. El Palmar will forever be special to me. Back in 2009, my husband who at the time was my boyfriend, took me on our first date to El Palmar. Ever since then we've continued to go. Every time we go, we are treated with outstanding service. Our favorite plate is Camarones Empanizados which comes with your side of rice, beans, and can't forget, handmade yummy flour tortillas. Before we order we are served a nice size portion of chips and salsa, which you can refill at no extra charge. The chips and salsa are my absolute favorite. I have tried different plates such as, flautas, sopes, tacos, shrimp cocktail, and green salsa pork. The only downside is that it can get very busy at times but makes it a good thing, because that means people love it. But we have managed to get a head of the line and order take out. Our food is ready to be picked up within 20 minutes. I definitely recommend El Palmar!!!! read more

This place has some great tasting food and is a must try. Their salsa has a particular taste that has grown on us and has become a craving. The sopes meal is usually the "go to" for me and their corn dough is probably one of the freshest and best quality that I have tried. This wasn't our first choice today because our usual spot was closed. I looked at reviews and we decided to try this place. We ordered some burritos and was not disappointed. I had the shrimp burrito which tasted great. There was so much shrimp I couldn't finish it all. The other burrito was a carne asada and my boyfriend liked it. I've had a lot of Mexican food in my time and in a lot of different cities. This place seemed to have really good reviews, so my husband and I gave it a shot while in Lompoc for the week. Am I a snob? I really didn't like it. The best way I could describe my review to my husband was, "It's the worst Mexican food I've had in a long time." That's not to say it was awful. It's just that I'm used to really, really good Mexican food, I guess, and this was just not on par. I got the shrimp enchiladas combo. The cheese was rubbery and mozzarella-like. The sauce had a strong tomato taste to it, so much that the combination of that and the cheese really reminded me of eating pizza. I was happy there was lots of shrimp in/on the enchiladas, though. The beans and rice were below-average in my opinion. The beans were an odd color...lighter than I've ever seen anywhere. Not sure why. The chips were fine, and the salsa is not cut out for wusses like me who can't handle the heat. The service was great, though. But anyway, not that I have plans to stay in Lompoc in the near future, or really ever again, I would definitely not be running back to this place. read more

We were staying at a motel on Ocean Street, and when we asked, the desk clerk recommended this place to eat (and so close by! We walked there). Wow, this Mexican food was as good as it gets! I especially enjoyed my chile relleno: a nice, big, fresh green chile stuffed with the most wonderful mild and gooey white cheese--queso fresco, perhaps?
