First time dining at this place, food was good. The spicy garlic edamame was very good. Seaweed salad was delicious. The rice was a bit undercooked, we told our server and she was kind enough to replace it. All the food was good! The restaurant is small and cozy and the had amazing Spanish pop music that was just the perfect volume. We stumbled upon this place by accident. We originally wanted tacos but my son wanted chicken teriyaki. My husband popped in to see if they had some so we could order to go. Once inside, seeing the menu and listening to Caifanes being blasted, my husband said nope let's eat here. Wow everything we tried was soo good!! I love the Japanese and Mexican fusion. Tried this place for the first time since it was the closest Sushi restaurant aroundZ The restaurant gives a chill Southbay/Mexican/Japanese vibe that offers something for everyone. We tried the aguachile tostada as an app, it is served on a small wonton tostada. It is on the smaller side but still had a significant amount of tuna and packed a punch. Service was quick, friendly, and efficient. I saw some other tables ordering ramen but we didn't try it. Ordered a couple rolls and both were above average in flavor. I should've known better but my friend wanted sushi after 8pm and this place is across the street. For starters the service is trash and second they use paper straws, that's how I knew this place was going to be terrible. I order gyoza, fried rice, one roll and a sprite. Everything was trash. My friend got ramen and it was trash too. The fried rice was swimming in grease. My sushi roll had a weird taste and feel to it. Everything we've had is great and we have super white babies and toddlers and they let us bring in happy meals for them because they are super picky while we had sake bombs and all the rolls. The only reason I didn't give five stars is that we ordered the same roll twice and it was different the second time? Honestly was still very good though so no real complaints. This is probably one of my new fav sushi spots. I have never tried it. I was thinking and thinking and decided to look for a new sushi place. This location isn't that far from where I live. It was a little late and sister mom and I decided to go eat sushi! As soon as we got there we got sat. Menus were given right away and asked for our drinks as well!! There are couple of options! I ended up doing the starfish roll sister did the 805 roll mom did the fried fish (mojarra) and we also got the scallops aguachiles!!! And a side of steam rice. And the French fries (they were super bomb) My sushi was delicious!!! Super super super bomb! And fresh! My sisters was good too Hers was deep Fried and I'm not a big fan of deep Fries sushi but that one was good. One of my faves was the scallops aguachiles (small portion) but so worth it! After working out of state for the summer I was happy to return to my neighborhood and try this new spot so I stopped by for lunch. As a MOH alumni, of course I ordered the Montgomery Roll and some yummy shishito peppers. They give you so much shishito peppers for a very cheap price in my opinion. And of course 2 out of every 10 shishito peppers are spicy for a fun pepper roulette. I appreciate the fusion of Mexican and Japanese flavors as seafood is a big part of Baja and coastal cuisine. We also ordered some iced green tea and MANGO sake. The mango sake was amazing and tasted like a mango smoothie. Between 2 people the mango sake poured 2-3 sake cups each. Not all sushi places have good and/or fresh pickled ginger. Their ginger was F R E S H. I also noticed one of the owners having a business meeting to get some more alcoholic drinks on the menu such as wine and more sake. They didn't have a drink menu, we asked the waitress about their drink options after we saw sake cups along a shelf. So I look forward to returning to new drinks and trying their yummy looking scallops next. As someone local to the area I noticed their website is targeted to Imperial Beach locals and via social media they previously used to tag their location as Chula Vista. I take pride in my area, we are not IB or CV, I hope the owners can learn to also take pride in our area. read more

This used to be the old Rita's Italian Ice joint a couple of years back so I'm glad something tasty has filled the spot. First time coming in (only a 7 minute walk from my house) and will def return. Had the Vegetable tempura (no shrimp) with the Yakisoba Tofu. Both spot on and got both for $14 total. We were the first ones in, around 6pm, but by the time we left at 7:30, place was filled up. Good service and clean. Hope this place survives, so it can become a weekly routine for me. The tostada was delicious. The waiter didn't do a very good job of explaining the Kuro Crab dish. It was too salty for our taste. We took one bite and set aside. When we told the waiter we didn't like it, all he said was "Aww that sucks." Our entrees/roll took another long while come out. Wife ordered a poke bowl. She actually really liked it. The fish was fresh. We had the 805 roll to share. It was ok. I ordered the Guajillo Salmon. As you can see I'm my picture, it doesn't really look appetizing. It tastes pretty much how it looks. Overcooked, soggy, fishy. The the portions were really thin. I found that a little odd. Not really much flavor to it. I put this place on the map but I guess someone else did too, so here's my review that I originally posted: I have never been so pleased with a soft opening. I have had my eye on this place since it was "coming soon." When I heard they were doing a soft opening, I had to come check it out. I'm a fan and foodie ... a ... groupie? Anyway, I digress. It's gonna be quite the hidden gem considering the location (it's a decent sized CVS shopping center) but I also hope they blow up because the food and the atmosphere is legit. Alex is a chill guy with awesome ideas. The inside of the restaurant has a sorta industrial touch to it. The art on one of the walls is gorgeous. The seating is spaced out pretty well for a cozy sized place. And yes, I named the awesome octopus toilet roll holder in the restroom Hubert. Tell him I say the next time you excuse yourself from the dinner table. The menu is limited for now but still great variety to choose from. No beer right now but they will have craft beers on tap in a about a month. They've got a handful or appetizers and sides, classic rolls, special rolls, a couple entrees and sashimi. They do have dessert too but you have to ask since they're still making adjustments to the menu. Let's see, I had tons of food. Lemme break it all down... Papas Fritas with a BBQ Aoili: These fries were hot and fresh. There's a really amazing crispy exterior with that meaty potato on the inside. The fries are topped with some cotija cheese and the dipping sauce is a creamy sauce with a tiny bit of a BBQ-like smokiness to it. If I had to compare it to anything, it's kinda like the Campfire sauce at Red Robin. I dig it. Gyoza: I'm vegetarian, so I relied on my hubby and daughter for some feedback. Hubby said the filling on the gyoza was a nice combo of meat and veggies. I did. dip my finger into the gyoza dipping sauce. It's got a rich sesame flavor with, I think, a ponzu thing going on. Very tangy and citrusy. Kuro crab: Oh man, this appetizer has my heart and stomach. I think I could have ordered to or three more of these. It's soft shell crab with a salsas negras, thinly sliced cucumber and red onions. The soft shell crab itself has a super light, crispy batter and it is seasoned very well. The sauce it sits on has a wonderful sweet and citrusy thing going on. I love that the dish is not oily at all for being fried up and the cucumber and onions play a very nice balancing act with the soft shell crab. If you're gonna get all appetizers, get this one for sure! Udon with Shrimp Tempura: Hubby got the udon. Of course, I tried it! Glad I did. The broth itself is super deep in flavor. It has a tiny smokiness to it because it's got some ancho chili. But it's not spicy at all. Just very rich broth. The udon noodles are soft with a little bit of chew. Pretty darn good. The shrimp tempura that comes with it just melts in your mouth. Dip that sucker in the udon broth and you got yourself a party of flavors in your mouth! El Pez Roll: This is a low carb roll. It's cucumber wrapped tuna, salmon, yellowtail & crab and it's served on some white yuzu ponzu... Oh my word! Tall the fish is tender and melts in your mouth. The flavor of the ponzu doesn't overpower the roll at all. It compliments it very well! Very fresh fish, as if it were straight from the ocean. Montgomery Roll: Probably my favorite roll so far (I will be returning to try more, lol) it's kinda safe roll if you don't want a classic roll but you want a special roll to try. It's got crab, cucumber and shrimp tempura topped with spicy tuna, avocado, eel sauce, spicy mayo and tempura flakes. It's not over spicy and the eel sauce adds a nice sweetness to the roll. Crab and shrimp is always a great combo, too. Fuego Azteca Roll: Okay, this is a fun one. But like I told Alex, who was taking care of us, it works. It's a crab and shrimp tempura roll with cucumber and Hot Cheetos. And the the roll has Hot Cheeto dust all over with a dollop of nacho cheese sauce. Sounds crazy, but if you love Hot Cheetos, it's worth trying! So yeah. HAD to put this place on the map. I wish great success for this place. I hope if you're in the area, you can check it out! Went here yesterday. They only had the soft opening menu available. Regardless, it was amazing to say the least. Ordered the Miso Soup, Karrage Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken, Montgomery Roll, El Pez Roll and the Tokio Soul Roll. The Karrage Chicken was average, a bit over cooked, not the best. Aside from the Karrage, EVERYTHING else, including the service was on point! My son who is 5 enjoyed it all as well. Which is saying a lot considering he's only 5 and most kids just want to eat chicken nuggets. Excited to have them in the neighborhood and looking forward to coming back and trying the full menu. Our favorite item was the El Pez Roll. Sushi is definitely fresh and tastes great. Highly recommend this place. UPDATE: Came back a second time. Tried the Short Rib entree and the Starfish Roll. Even though I gave super short notice (not expecting anyone to agree to such a large order so soon), the manager Alex came through. What a gem! As their website says, this is Japanese cuisine with a Mexican twist. This is by far now one of my favorite spots. This isn't just sushi, the entirety of the mixed menu means an amusement park for my taste buds. Sushi, ramen, gyozas, calamari, tostadas, teriyaki and much more. See the thing about this place is you can tell the food isn't made quick to just send out, it's made with passion, the chefs aren't in it for a buck, it's what they love to do and you can taste it. We started with a tuna tostada, gyozas, two chef's recommissions: cucumber salad, ceviche, and went on to order two sushi rolls. Laura's roll and Sea Butter roll. We kept going with the tostada flight which consists of all of their delicious tostadas. Boy were we stuffed, but it was so worth it. Washed it all down with some Sapporo. We ate so much and while I highly recommend all the above mentioned dishes, my favorite were the tuna tostada, Laura's roll, cucumber salad and the ceviche. The cucumber salad seemed simple and small but don't be fooled, packed with flavors, I can eat it every day! A punch of savory yet sweet flavors, perfect side or a simple appetizer. The tuna tostada was so fresh, salsa negra, aioli and the avocado sauce it sits on ties all the flavors together, so fire! Laura's roll has salmon, shrimp, crab, avocado, cucumber, lemon slices, chiles toreados, ponzu and cilantro. This is another refreshing dish, the lemon slices cleared the pallet after each bite and it's simply perfection. The ceviche, I don't know if it's on the menu but I believe it was a chefs special this night, wow, wow, wow. Not your average, common ceviche, this was a twist for sure. I think it's soft boiled shrimp, on top of the yummiest sauce, topped with a dab of mousse, cucumber, red onion, avocado, thinly sliced radishes, micro greens and cilantro. Blue corn tortillas to enjoy this delicious dish. I could go on, and maybe I will after I return to indulge on the rest of their dishes, I hear their ramen is just as amazing.
