This update was prompted for a multitude of reasons, but the best one is, our continuing enjoyment of their cuisine, and our continued discoveries on the menu. They have gone through the rigors of opening a new business and have met and exceeded our expectations. The owners, Maritza and Miguel, a couple from Peru, are solely responsible for the kitchen and cuisine. They are the heart and soul of this restaurant and will bend over backwards to make you feel welcome and satisfied. They have recently added Idania as their warm and eager-to-please server. She is a welcome addition to an already successful business. First and foremost, I come for the ceviche. I cannot eat here without ordering this. It is made using Swai, a very non-fishy white fish served in a wonderful cilantro/chili/sour orange juice marinade that chemically cooks the fish. I have been known to drink the marinade after already engorging myself on this dish. Shameful. Served with conchita, yam, yellow Peruvian corn, and plantain chips, it is something you simply must try. There is plenty for two or more to share, or for one as a complete, healthy meal. The conchita is a traditional side dish, a Peruvian answer to popcorn, large kernel of corn that have been fried and salted. I am warning you, it is addictive. They have a very great understanding of how to produce a beautiful rotisseried chicken, their signature dish, that is both flavorful and moist. Brining first makes it almost fool-proof, then coating it with a lovely herbal paste (cilantro, oregano, lime????) and cooking it so slowly it doesn't dare turn dry makes it perfect. They continually cook small batches throughout the day to ensure the best quality. Highly recommended. Avoid the disappointment: call ahead to make sure there is some ready for you. Or order something different...not a bad idea either. The chicken is served with a side of the most amazing fries. They are fresh cut, fried in a delicate oil to perfection, and lightly salted. You will find yourself having naughty thoughts about these fries, I guarantee. If they have made some the day you come, please taste their green chicken and rice soup. It is rich and flavorful and tummy-wonderful! The green-ness is from the herb, cilantro, a welcome addition to any dish in my opinion. And then there is the Tamale Peruano, a must try item, with a pork and egg filling encased in a moist, tender, flavorful masa (made with lard) that will have you scraping the plate. It is perfection, and they make them here from scratch. I would kill for these. This is served with a heap of Salsa de Criolla, a lime juice marinated onions/tomato/cilantro "salad". We have had a great Lomo Saltado that came with those freshly cut and superbly fried potatoes. And the breaded beef steak, similar to a Milanesa, is very good, also offered with fries and rice. Last but not least, I love their baked empanadas. Again, the pastry is made from scratch, slightly sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The ground beef filling is brilliant with its rich complex flavors of raisins, hard boiled egg, herbs and onions. We have not tried the chicken filling. Never could get past the beef. But, please avoid disappointment. You MUST order a day ahead. These are made to order, no extras in the freezer. You will never go back to "the other guy" after tasting these. Now, if this doesn't excite you enough, here is my last tip. Try their authentic cold beverages. There are two that are made in-house and they are exceptional. The Chicha Morada (a purple corn, pineapple and (I am guessing) a clove brew that I swear tastes like Christmas in a cup) and the Maracuya (a passion fruit drink that is so perfect, you can really enjoy the pure taste of that marvelous fruit). So good, highly recommended, not too sweet, and neither the least bit weird. We are very excited to have El Pollo Kri-ollo in our neighborhood. Was in the area and checked out the reviews and seemed like it is a good choice for Peruvian cuisine. The arroz con pollo came with fried rice and a side of pickled red onions which gave an awesome tanginess to the entire meal. The pollo saltado (Chicken sautéed in vegetables and crispy French fry cut potatoes in an amazing tangy soy/teriyaki kind of sauce) is also a must and the portion served will not let anyone down. Not truly bothered by the overall appearance being outdated, however a nice upgrade could real create a beyond pleasant visit to the place. The waitress serving us was joyful and attentive through our visit, despite the rush of customers that emerged around closing time. Beef was tender, and the surprise dish that everyone seemed to rave over was the seafood fried rice. The only drawback is the actual place, which appears pretty rundown and kind of depressing. In fact, I miss the food even as I type this Yelp, but just thinking about sitting in the restaurant itself is a bit of a turn off. What I also like about how they pack their to-go orders is that they separate the sauce in a little cup to avoid spillage. Extra points for that! The restaurant is dingy, dated and without air conditioning. I could get past the air but not how dirty it was. The food was very good which made me so sad. I wanted to love it and comeback but i kept thinking how bad is the kitchen if the front is this bad. They took a while to serve us, however, I've grown to be patient. Our family loves this place! This was one of our favorite carb meal spots. Unfortunately for me I can't enjoy it like I use to. There must be a form of gluten in the seasoning or some part of the food prep because I get a bad "gluten attack" within hours of eating. Worst service I have had in a restaurant in a very long time. We showed up more than an hour before closing with a party of 7, and apparently we bothered the waitress by making her have to work. Had to ask for waters 3 times, which were never refilled. Server rolled her eyes at us several times as we asked for things like a fork or napkin. I am never going back to this restaurant. She offered no suggestions for food, and took forever to even take our order to begin with. It was a little difficult to locate using the "trusty" GPS, but I hung in there and found myself in a strip mall... and there it was. I ordered their Pollo A La Brasa (rotisserie chicken) which came with soup and and choice of fries, beans, salad or rice. I chose fries and salad. The food was delivered quickly, and boy was it good. The soup had big chucks of chicken in it. The pollo had great flavor from all the herbs and spices, and the fries were really yummy too. The green sauce (aji verde) was nice and spicy, and complimented the chicken, fries and soup really well. Now, I'm not a salad guy (tried to keep the meal as healthy as possible) but it was really tasty....nice and fresh. The owner was very attentive to me, making sure I enjoyed the food and that my cup was always filled with soda. I have no negative comments about this place other than its located way far away from me. -4 star for the food -5 star for the customer service --We're going to round up and give this place an overall 5 star.
