My husband and I like the healthy choices and delicious chicken el pollo loco offers so we decided to try the remodeled one in town . We have the opportunity to try various el pollo locos on our monthly travels so it's easy to make the comparison. This location had problems before the fire and I had hoped those were resolved with the new restaurant. Today we ordered take out and once again the order was missing some items . In addition , I noticed in the past that the food is much smaller in quantity than the other El Pollo Locos we go to . This continues to be the case today . For example, I almost always order the chicken tostada and can make a meal of it for 2-3 days . Today the shell was barely filled to 1/2, same as before the remodel . I came to El Pollo Loco May 17th around 2:40 p.m. to get a birria quesadilla with just meat and cheese, i ordered the meal. After leaving El Pollo Loco I go back home to take a nap, wake up around 8:40 9:00 to eat my meal and it's the wrong meal? In fact it was with avocado amongst other things inside. Now I'm allergic to avocado, and I specifically told the lady that took my order I just wanted meat and cheese which she insured It was. This was my first visit during the shelter in place order too effect. Used the drive through, wearing my face mask and when I get to the window, I see that the individual handling my food was wearing a mask, but there was a coworker inside who was not. I also noticed that the customer in front of me was not wearing one eirher. I should have refused my food, but I had my grandson in the car, and I just didn't want the hassle. The chicken had tough skin and was mostly disgusting tasting dark meat. Ugh. It was gross! They're offering new carne asada items but I'm reluctant after the food I had. I do have to mention the eating area was extremely well kept and looked fresh & clean. It helped make my not so great food taste decent as possible. I don't like chicken but I love el pollo loco. You can eat healthy at a fast food joint but make smart choices. I always order the broccoli, sometimes a double order. Steamed broccoli no butter no salt, as healthy as you can get. If I feel like indulging I get the coleslaw since I am on the keto diet and can't eat any carbs but can eat fat. The mac and cheese is mushy but the rice and beans are delicious. If you do carbs order the corn tortillas. Otherwise I usually order a two or three pieces leg/thigh combo. The drumsticks are my favorite but it luck of the draw what pieces you get. I love the chicken skin. I refuse to order the skinless breast for double the price. Skin is good as it is not fried or battered. It's just seasoned skin grilled. Yummy! I usually am a white meat type of chicken girl but el pollo loco's is a bit dry for me and often times they are out so I've learned to love the dark meat cuts. So much flavor and inexpensive. I love that you can see them grilling the meat as you order. Dip your meat in the spicy avocado salsa or if you don't like spicy their fresh tomato salsa is just as good. I dig El Pollo Loco! Straight up Drive-Thru Cal Mex, with an emphasis on the "cal". It's primarily chicken (as the name implies) and the chicken is good for fast food! Fire grilled, well seasoned, and most importantly, not processed pink slime. It's not as cheap as most fast food places, but if you order the right stuff, the prices are decent. I recommend the original El Pollo Bowl, but substitute black beans for regular beans. First, I must say, that I am glad that Gilroy is finally coming up in the world and actually getting more restaurants than what we had a few years ago. The menu here is pretty basic. Burritos, tacos, the basics. Then, they have chicken... so its kinda like a mixture of Taco Bell and KFC. Weird... but whatever. I got the Fiesta Salad. My mom got the Ultimate Pollo Bowl. Both were over $5 each. The flavor and taste were ok. I liked the creamy chipotle dressing. But there was NOTHING special about this salad. What really disappointed me was the size of both our dishes. The bowls were pretty small and not deep at all. My mom wasn't that impressed with her pollo bowl either. I ordered the $5 chicken bowl deal through the drive through. It came with the bowl, chips, and a drink. The bowl was delicious! The chicken was tender and lean, and the beans and rice were filling. It didn't have the "low quality" taste of other drive through restaurants. It tasted really nutritious and it was a really good deal!
