So, I love El Pollo Loco. Their chicken is bomb, regardless if it's fast food. You also cant beat the price for a BRC or crunchy taco and the salsa bar is my favorite thing about the crazy chicken. Well, live and learn they say. Yesterday was my second visit to El Pollo Loco in about 5 years. Now I remember why I hadn't gone back till now. Ordered a Grande Avocado Chicken bowl and a small guacamole and chips. Got home to see that half of the ingredients were missing from the bowl and the small cup of guacamole had about a teaspoon of guacamole in it. It was too hot and I was too angry to call or go back, but be sure to thoroughly check your order before driving off. It's too bad we have to do that, either that or get home with half of your food at full price. Hasta la vista, El Pollo. I won't be making the same mistake a third time. This place is so weird. We spent over $47 here tonight and the employees will NOT give us any sour cream, which was supposed to come with my husbands salad. They demanded that we pay extra for it. I would understand if they charge extra for everything else but they literally put 10 salsas in our bag that we never wanted or asked for, 6 cilantro dressings that we never wanted or asked for, and 8 Chile verdes when we only asked for 2. If they can afford to waste all that, they can surely give us a little sour cream. When my husband said he was going to contact corporate and the manager then they suddenly wanted to give it to him, but he was so pissed he just told them "too late" and walked out. The employees are rude and act like they have to pay for the sour cream or something. It doesn't come out of their pocket. Doesn't make sense to piss off a huge family who comes here often and spends a lot of money over some measly sour cream. read more

I haven't been in one of these for .... decades. I tried it in the 80s in SoCal and it was dry. I would go to Super Pollo (in Costa Mesa) instead. So today a friend wants to go there, so we go. He got a chicken ceasar salad bowl, which they USED to have on the menu, and so far he just asks for and gets, apparently. Kinda like the secret menu at In-N_Out. I got a 2-piece leg and thigh, and I'm highly impressed. No more dry chicken! It's really good. I got to choose two sides, so I got this sort of scoop of corn stuff that's really good, and sweet potato fries. They were really good. I also got 2 corn tortillas, which are sort of midway between toasting up ready-made ones yourself at home and the really good ones you get when you start with masa and do it all by hand. Very very good for fast food! And they're not afraid to make the salsa HOT, which I like. All of the food was nice and hot, no sitting around until it's cold here. The meal came with a drink, take your choice, the standard high fructose corn syrup or nice plain old iced tea. I am really impressed and will be back. Now, in my world the two direct competitors of this meal both cost about the same as it, about $6. One is the McD's Angus burger meal, which I've eaten many a time and will many more. For the same money this is MUCH better food. The actual calories probably come out the same (yay, calories, I like calories) but the quality is much higher. The other direct competitor simply because it's so close would be to go into Arteaga's and get a couple of Super Tacos and a soda. And their Super Tacos *are* good. But I think for taste, nutrition, healthiness, and still not getting shorted on calories, this is the best. After eating roasted chicken, the only thing I'd suggest is some hand wipes. I think KFC offers them. But I was able to use some of my unsweetened tea and a napkin to clean my fingers up OK. read more

I have never eaten at El Pollo Loco before the other night. I'm really confused on the concept. Are they trying to be a Americanized fast food Mexican restaurant or are they trying to be a true Mexican fast food restaurant. First thing I'll say is that the chicken was very good. I do have to comment on the sides. I like the fact that they tried to do pinto beans rather than refried beans. The only problem was it feel short of being good Mexican pinto beans. The flavor profile was all bad. Unfortunately, the Mexican rice was even worse. It was probably one of the worst Mexican rices I've ever had. For one it looks like they used a short grain, rice pilaf type of rice. The flavor was all bad as well. I do like the fact that they give you tortillas with your meal, although half of them were rock hard. I also got mac and cheese for my daughter. I didn't try any did I can't comment on them. I think next time going forward if I ever go back there, I'd only order the chicken without sides and make my own homemade rice and beans. Again, I'm not sure of the concept of food here. The quality here has really gone downhill. First the last few times I have been here they have been out of crunchy tacos, I don't know if they are to lazy to make them or they have discontinued the product. The staff didn't seem to now. So I took my order of 30 tacos and went else where. I need 50 tacos for two week, wonder if they will have them then. Probably not so I won't even try. I am very upset. I drove here thinking they are open until 11pm on a Sunday and came more than 15 minutes before they closed and their lights were off. I am so disappointed. Save your money or find another location. It wasn't until we got our food that I had made a mistake in ordering. If you want the cheese enchiladas and churros with the $30.00 family meal combo you must tell them you want the "NEW" family meal combo. We just left this place. We saw a commercial that was advised a family meal deal with Chicken, sides and Enchilada 's for $20.00. We walk in and they don't have it. Why in the hell would a place advertise something they dont have? Okay, thats fine. I wanted to leave, but, we were already there. As we were waiting for our order, we were looking around the place is a MESS. The salsa station was gross. The prep station was a mess. We asked for pre-packaged green sauce because the salsa station was gross, the manager was very rude and gave us a shitty look. We won't be back. I wish we would of got her (the manager 's name). Unfortunately, my experience at this EPL in Gilroy has totally turned me away. The chicken is usually over cooked, and the sides are nothing too impressive. I frequent this place. (Dine in is fair to ok). But make sure you go inside and get your food and check your order before you leave. They will short you big time in the drive-through and give you the oldest smallest piece of meat that's been on the grill for way too long.
