I have heard about their great grilled chicken for years and finally drove over to try it today. I got the 3 taco combination plate which had a beef, chicken and pork taco with beans and rice for $769. The tortillas were freshly made and the green salsa was excellent. I spilt the order with my son so we could try each taco. His favorite was the beef, which was grilled and had cilantro and onion. I liked the pastor, which is the pork. Bear with me for a minute, I have to tell a story. Once upon a time, I met up with my little brother at a Chili's. No big expectations - it's just Chili's and the only thing that was open in our neck of the woods at the late hour. Anyway, we order and after MUCH deliberation lil bro decides to order a margarita. Why so much deliberation?? Well, because he knew the likelihood of it not being so good. Bartender shows up with the margarita shortly there after, and he places it on the table. "Thanks, man." Then, the bartender says, "So, yeah...um I made it EXXXTRA strong...um because yeah it was near the end of the bottle of tequila." He then looks at my brother and I expectantly...you know, waiting for our approving reaction. He got dead silence and walked away in the awkward moment. My brother and I sit in the silence and exchange knowing looks...My lil bro looks at me and exclaims, "DAMMIT! Now, it's really going to suck!" I said, "Yeah, he hyped it up...and it can never live up to all that talk. It's just a Chili's Margarita." In the end - we were correct. This little tale occurred some time ago, but it was the origin of a metaphor we now use to refer to anything that has been over-hyped, talked up, built up...but sadly does not live up to any of the expectations. We say "It got Chili's Margarita-ed." Hmm... El Pollo Rico...It got Chili's Margarita-ed... Yup, you can get a whole chicken, rice, beans, a grilled onion, lime, corn tortillas, and red and green sauce for like 12 bucks. That's cheap eats. Yup, they literally take your order and have you on your way in like 2 minutes. If I was really hungry - I don't suppose I'd kick the chicken out of bed. However, I've had way better meals. I certainly won't be going out of my way to relive this one. I'd rather buy chickens at HEB and marinate them in Italian dressing and garlic salt and have Dad throw them on the grill. My friends and family now to refer to the pollo asado from El Regio, as either "the chicken" or "the Mexican chicken." I've braved I-35/Riverside 5:00 traffic for this chicken, been lost in South Austin trying to find this chicken, stood in line in the sun for this chicken. Its that good. I love me some Mexican chicken. The green sauce is to die for delish, the chicken is spicy, grilled and so tasty, the beans rock the dock and the whole expierience is a weekly occurence for me. And its practically free. $12 for the whole bag-o-food. Now there is one in the Fiesta parking lot 38 1/2 and IH 35! Turns some folks on to the chicken and they'll love you forever! read more

I drive by this place everyday and since I don't eat meat, I figured they had nothing for me. I was starving one day and decided to stop. I asked if their beans were vegetarian, they replied yes and I ordered a bean bowl. It was tasty enough, more expensive than Taco Cabana (I confirmed vegetarian black beans there)and less of a bowl size as well. I go towards the bottom of my bowl and found 2 huge hunks of pork. They either didn't understand my question about meat or just didn't care, I wasn't happy about this discovery!!! I did ask the guy atleast 2 times confirming no meat, he even repeated it but it didn't happen that way. For meat eaters: I'm sure it's just fine. I have passed by this South Austin business many times but the bars on the windows kinda had me a little weary. I was looking for a place to go this afternoon when I read some reviews here on yelp about El Pollo Rico. The line was long but moved quickly and soon I found out that all of the reviews on here were absolutely right! The chicken is AMAZING!!! The Beans were probably the best I've had in Austin and that is saying something! Also, everything was still warm when I got home and the beans were wrapped with shrink wrap to keep them from spilling on the car ride home. For a little over $7, a person can gorge on rotisserie chicken, tortillas, onions, rice, beans, and the famous green 'crack' sauce. Delicious. I guess this small drive-through at the corner of S. 1st and Stassney (in the parking lot with Time Warner) was "El Regio" but now it's "Pollo Rico?" Anyway, who cares about the name! I used to avoid this place because it was in an old Short Stop restaurant, you know, the sort of building that goes burgers to cell phone dealer to cigarrette shop. I'm glad I gave them a try. The chicken is fantastic - flavorful, a good charbroiled smell and taste, and lots of it - for cheap. I'm taken by the rice and beans though. I could make a meal of just these. The beans are whole in a light broth with plenty of jalapeno, onion, tomato, some sort of meaty goodness, and man, are they good. I'm going to say they're the best I've had in town. This is my go to spot whenever I have a taste for delicious charcoal grilled chicken. The chicken is so flavorful and juicy. The half chicken meal is my go to. It's enough for two. It comes with a side of rice and pinto beans. I have also had the Caldo de pollo, Mexican chicken soup. The soup is amazing I tried it this week when I was feeling sick and wanted some homemade chicken soup. I was not disappointed. I have also had the breakfast tacos as well as the breakfast burritos. Their location on Stassney and 1st is the worst. I love the food but they never get my order right. Its happened so much that I make sure and repeat myself more than a few times. I get that I should check the food and make sure it is all there but that should not be my responsibility. It happened again today! And always with the the guacamole too, I ask for extra every time and I either get NONE or one with a little bit in it...probably a dumb thing to get mad over but everyone knows guac isn't cheap and when I pay for extra, I expect to get extra. I try not to even eat there anymore because it literally happens every time but it is so close to my apt so it's hard not to. The only way to fix it is to always check my food. The chicken is almost too good. So good and cheap that I would have easily given 5 stars if it wasn't for their sides. The beans are great but the rice has been sitting in the little styrofoam containers too long. The rice kinda gets a styrofoam taste.
