Bear WITH ME AS THIS IS A LONG ONE but.... I'm from out of town and was really excited to try Mexican food here, but unfortunately my experience with this restaurant was extremely disappointing. I was placing an order through DoorDash around 8:30 PM and had a few questions about the entrees, so I tried calling the restaurant beforehand. I called from two different phones because they didn't answer the first call, but no one ever picked up either time. I went ahead and placed my order anyway since DoorDash already showed a 40+ minute delivery time, so I wasn't in any rush. Around 8:50 PM, a man from the restaurant called me back with an immediate attitude. He kept repeatedly telling me my order wasn't ready over and over, even as I calmly explained that I had tried calling earlier before placing my order pertaining to other things, not to rush my order. What really bothered me was how unprofessional the conversation became. He was laughing away from the phone while I was talking, clearly thinking I couldn't hear him. At that point, yes, I did give some attitude back because I felt disrespected by the way he was speaking to me and laughing during the conversation. He then ended the call by saying, "Well your order will be ready in 5 minutes, we just got it, ok honey," in a very demeaning and sarcastic tone. I understand restaurants get busy, especially during dinner rushes, and I'll admit the conversation became tense on both sides, but there's still no excuse for treating customers this way from the start. First impressions matter, especially for visitors trying your restaurant for the first time. Ended up not even enjoying the food and throwing it all away because I didn't feel comfortable feeding my family food from a place who had acted that way before even making my food because people are crazy and evil these days. read more

El Potro was amazing! This restaurant is located right off of Buford highway and definitely worth the stop. They had the authentic delicious Mexican food I was craving for an affordable price. I got the steak fajita quesadillas cause I I wasn't hungry enough for the milk fajita meal and it satisfied my stomach all the same. The meat and veggies were season to perfection and there was a yummy queso or sauce they put in the quesadilla that really made I stand out. The service was great. There weren't many people when I visited around 5pm but it did start to pick up significantly but the time I left around 6. Our server was very quick to get me and my guest some waters and starting chips and salsa. He came back a couple times to make sure our food was tasting good and answered all of our questions! Great food, great service and good prices-- definitely come here if you're in the area and looking for your next lunch or dinner spot. read more

We found half a dead cockroach in our basket of chips. Extremely unfortunate experience. Staff ran away with the evidence and seemed extremely unbothered and unconcerned about us finding a dead roach in our food. Still tried to charge us full price for the meal. read more

Really disappointed with this. My boyfriend and I drove by the other day and thought "we NEED to go there", saw the reviews and decided it was actually a need. My cat had some emergency issues this morning which put us 5 minutes away from el Porto so we decided to order pickup. Service was quick and the staff was kind. The food on the other hand was pushing gross. The cheese dip tastes oddly like peanuts and the fajita didn't have any actual cheese in it it was just soggy tortilla and meat with cheese dip, bell peppers, and onions. Great tasting food, friendly staff, and a beautiful ambiance. I ordered the Chile Relleno, and while the presentation was unusual, the pepper was sliced and the filling was poured over the top instead of being stuffed inside, it still tasted really good. At first, I even thought they had brought me the wrong dish. The only real challenge was the language barrier since most of the staff did not speak much English. Everyday is Taco TUESDAYYYYY at El Potro! My friend @atlantabestbites had us join her at one of her favorite spots on Buford Highway and we wrrr excited to give it a try. It is DANGEROUS to come in here ordering a pitcher of skinny margaritas... let alone two of them... especially for our table 3 people. Service was pretty good - the server was patient with our questions and recommended certain dishes based on what we liked. I like spicy and was feeling something slightly lighter than red meat so I decided to try the Camarones a la Diabla and it was SPICY. That sauce HURT ME in many ways LOL but if you can handle spicy, I definitely recommend. It comes with rice and refried beans and I found it to be on the pricier side of the menu ($16.95) but it came with a ton of shrimps so I didn't complain. Overall, it's a little farther of a drive down Buford Highway for me but a solid spot to grab a drink (or two or five) and a bite to eat before a night out. read more

I came to this place because I wanted some fajitas for lunch and it was the closest. This place is huge with parking all around the building. There parking lot has a steep slope so make sure your brakes work. Service was decent but nothing spectacular. This is truly a no frills place. I had to flag down my waiter a couple of times to get hot sauce and the bill. Not an issue but only come to this place if you have time to chill. I got the lunch Fajitas Texana. It is basically fajitas with chicken, steak, and shrimp. The price was very affordable. The portion was large. The flavor in the fajitas was lacking but the salsa and hot sauce made up for it. read more

I happen to pass this spot often. After I passed the joint countless time, I thought I would stop in. They have a bar, not the biggest bar but it's enough to get you going! Of course there are a lot of tequila bottles and back so if you want something different, this may not be the best place to look at all the drinking options. They have a bunch of TVs, it's not sports bar like but it has TVs for you. If you're trying to wash maybe a game or so with a couple of friends this may be okay. This may not be okay to get about 30 people though! Just keep that in mind when you think about how big the spot is and how many TVs they have. The ambience is nice and it's not really quiet but that's okay. They have music going in the background so just be aware of that if you wanted someplace quiet to eat. It was close to closing time when I got there but everybody was still really friendly so I appreciated that. I know what I'm ready to get off work, I'm ready to get off work! So the fact that they didn't seem to rush me was a big plus as far as customer service goes. The place is really big, you don't know how big it is till you get inside but it is a lot of space. There's of course inside, and there's kind of outside. It's covered so I guess it's still inside but they have the plastic over the windows so you can make it outside or at least get you a breeze if it's nice outside. I got a carnitas taco and a Texas fajita. The tacos were the smaller kind of tacos that you would associate with street tacos. They came with little on there, not all the fancy bells and whistles that we like to dress tacos up in. And they had a few salsas to try, and all the sauces were pretty damn good. The fajita was also really good. It came to the table piping hot in a skillet. The Texas fajita had chicken, steak, and shrimp. And for the first time they actually had more shrimp than it had anything else which is usually not the case! Overall it was a good experience. I passed this place often enough so I would consider going back for sure. read more

This is the worst mexican restaurant that I have ever been to. The rice was stale, the carnitas was oozing grease. The cheese that I paid $1.50 extra for was missing. The waiter customer service was ok and the ambiance of the ok too, they had one of the FIFA matches playing on the Big screen television. Food wise however, I would have done better stopping my Chipotle or Taco Bell. Avoid this dump at all costs. I will not be returning. read more

The salsa that came with the chips was not very good, but the cheese dip was good. I ordered the Carne Asada Torta and it was not very flavorful at all. It was definitely a generous portion, but just not as good as I expected. The service was good and the margaritas were not bad. read more

Stopped by for a late night bite and for that role, I'd give it a 3.5/5. Prices were on the cheaper end and the food was surprisingly filling. They give you nachos and salsa to start. The menu is massive though with lots of combinations. I got a combo chalupa, taco, and enchilada with beef. The chalupa and enchilada was just straight meat. My friend had a bean quesadilla and it only had beans. I think the combo items were lacking spice or flavor. They played music and had some dancing in the aisles. Again, this place packs a punch! You almost miss it on the outside but you feel the love on the inside. Everyone has been absolutely the best. Service is extremely attentive. Most people in the establishment are extremely authentic. You will feel like you are in Mexico by dining at el Potro. I was so delighted at the affordability and the taste that I will frequent this place off of Buford hwy!! If you're looking for authentic Mexican without that ATL price tag, this is IT! When you move into a new neighborhood you want to discover all your new favorite spots. I wanted to find a traditional Mexican restaurant with great margaritas and great cheap food and we found it! Oh I am so happy that we found it. It's not a big space but it was great. The servers were quick with providing our appetizer and entrees. The queso was the perfect thickness. I've been to restaurants with the queso that's too thick and queso that is too watery but this was just right. We started small testing them out with their arroz con pollo y queso; however, we'll be trying out the fajitas and chimichangas next! I'm very excited! read more

If you read enough of my reviews you know I'm always on the hunt for good Mexican food. I was driving down Buford highway, and came across this restaurant. I knew I wanted tacos. I was instantly greeted upon arrival. The customer service was great. They offer outside seating, but they should really do something about the plastic film that covers the windows. Messes up the ambiance of the outside seating in my opinion. I ordered asada tacos. I didn't really like how they uncharge you to order different meat fillings for your tacos. You can order 3 for a certain amount, and you're only allowed to have one meat per order. Otherwise there will be an up charge. The tortilla you get is pretty huge, and they weren't stingy with the meat at all. If I knew they were that large I would've just ordered one lol. Unfortunately the flavor of the meat wasn't really satisfying for me. They'll bring you salsa, and onion and cilantro on the side to put on your tacos. Complimentary chips, and salsa offered. Our family have been regulars since moving to the area in 2013. The food has always been average, but the service was always good until the other night. My wife ordered Tacos with rice and beans. A pretty simple dish. The Tacos were not edible and the beans looked like a cat threw up on the plate. What was most disappointing was the attitude of the man at the front by the register. He was extremely rude and when my wife asked him "Should the beans look like this?" He responded very rudely and just said "Yes".My wife told him that she could not eat it so he said very loud and condescendingly "Well I guess we will take it off the bill". We paid, left, and never will go back. Their margaritas are horrible as is their Tequila selection. Do yourself a favor and stay away. There are too many good Mexican restaurants( Like Los Bravos) around to put up with this and waste your money! read more

I will say the pictures on the website doesn't do the food justice. The guacamole Mexicano is an excellent start to you meal. It's light and fresh and was an suggestion from our server. We loved it! Now drinks we went with a peach margarita pitcher that was $22. The pitcher gave us about 9 glasses. The margaritas were on point and i wish I ordered more. Our server was very knowledgeable and on point. Now I ordered the chimichangas and trust me they were so delicious and all the portions are huge! Overall, I would've given this restaurant 4 stars but the other people in my party thought it should be less stars/enjoyed their food less than I did mine. Been here twice. The service is always good and the margaritas strong I liked their chicken fajitas and guacamole a lot. Got the shrimp Diablo last time and it was good but too spicy for me. I like the outdoor patio, especially during Covid bc it's got plastic for warmth but still less occupied than the restaurant so it feels more Covid-safe with more space. With that said, I would happily keep this in our taco Tuesday rotation but probably not call it out as one of the best. read more

Their menu is jam packed and has everything you could imagine. It's the age old argument of quantity vs. quality. For me the quality just wasn't there. The margaritas were missing the details of salt on the rim, and felt a bit rushed together. I had one of the combo platters worth Chile relleno. The food was average, and felt more like cafeteria than restaurant food. I think the one redeeming quality was the fast service. I came out here on a recommendation though think I would skip coming out here again. It has some perks, though overall not a place that provided a unique experience. Stay frosty. read more

What was once one of my go-to Mexican spots, I'm afraid this place is struggling during COVID. Not only business wise, but it seems to have hurt the moral and the vibe of the restaurant as well. The service we received on the past two visits was so cold and dry. The waiter on the most recent visit seemed annoyed every time we asked for something. Literally threw one of our items down on the table. This is not to mention the sketchy stuff that seemed to be going on behind the scenes... fancy car pulls up, guy walks in the back, and then leaves less than 5 mins later. Could of been the owner decked out in jewelry and driving a Bentley I guess. At the end of the day, this is the same Americanized Mexican food you can get at any of these similar restaurants in the area. Casual spot for Mexican food. We got a grilled shrimp plate (without jalapeños) and it was pretty good. We also got the chalupa, enchilada and taco combo. The combo came with ground beef and shredded chicken. Everything also kind of looked the same except the taco was open face and didn't have meat we did not like this dish. The kids got quesadillas with rice and beans. You can add grilled chicken or steak for $1. The portion was generous and was good for a kids meal. Seating inside is a bit tight but there are a lot of tables. They provide complimentary chips and salsa and the cheese dip (without jalapeños) was also very good.
