As a SoCal transplant in ATL, it has been great to find a taco place to call home! Let's just say that their chicken and steak tacos with corn tortillas remind me of exactly what I used to get on both sides of the border! Today I tried their chicken taco (just one) and it was great! So, I would have taken pictures of the food, but I did take one of the aftermath which tells its own story now doesn't it?!!!! You can find Taqueria Michoacan at 3328 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 across the street from the Northeast Plaza shopping center. This is in the center of a shopping center with limited parking out front. The place is fairly busy, I believe with regular clientel. This restaurant is a bit of a dive with limited seating - I visited with my regular Buford Highway Restaurant group, tonight there were a handful of us. The people who waited on us were quite kind and provided some limited translations when we asked questions - however the English was limited. The menu features classic plates of Carne Asada, Caldos (soups and stews), Ordenes, Mariscos (seafood, mostly shrimp or fish), Tacos and Tortas (sandwiches). They also serve Negra Modelo - if you like beer you'll know that this is one of the better Mexican cervezas (in my humble opinion). I ordered the Tortas Campechana as it's one of my favorite sandwiches - here it was on one of those squishy Latino bakery rolls. I think the Campesina at Las Tortas is better, but I could certainly get by on this one. I also ordered the Pollo Mole Rojo - this was spicier than you usually encounter on BufHi and I liked the mole quite a bit - but I've come to find that I really don't like this version of mole where the chicken legs seem to be stewed then doused with the mole as a sauce. I think it's the texture of the skin and meat that turns me off a bit. I rate it as average but maybe worth trying if you like picante mole. John F ordered the Camerones a la Diabla - your basic sauteed shrimp in spicy red sauce. This was unusually not very spicy - the Diabla label had us fooled. Otherwise the shrimp were delicately cooked and not the rubber bands you sometimes end up with. Also ordered were some classic pork tacos and these were passable if not fantastic. We were hoping for fantastic but sometimes you get just OK. I think overall we weren't too impressed but we didn't think it was awful either. I think there's much better authentic Mexican down the street (in either direction) - it's difficult to say with one visit - we may just not have ordered what Michoacan does best? We got the carne asada and chicken burrito. There was hardly any salad or beans. Only rice and meat. Was not memorable. Steak was ok, wish there was more salad. Also there was no avocado. The red hot sauce is very hot. Green hot sauce is good. Fries were soggy. For $11/entree I expected more. This place isn't that cheap. read more

Wonderful service and food. I love the appropriate COVID-19 protocol while being able to maintain the same family atmosphere. Not originally from Atlanta so this isn't my normal taco place but a friend recommended sit to me so u true sir and it's the best I've had here so far. First I would like to thank Naoya, since Taco Quest has definitely inspired me as well, as this is the 4th taqueria in a week on Buford Hwy for me and something I've missed since moving here from Arizona. This is quickly becoming a 2nd calling for me next to the unnamed pizza quest I am perpetually on. I came prepared for the no habla ingles with my pretty much no habla espanol. So I say my hola and sit down with the menu, and give the waitress my horribly spoken Spanish order: "Me gustaria tener un taco de carnita, un taco de pastor, y un taco de asada". She smiles and starts talking to me in Spanish pretty much as fast as anyone could possibly talk. "ah....ok, no habla espanol". Failed experiment, but I tried. So she says 'cilantro and onion'? Ah....all of that was simply cilantro and onion? Si! Cilantro and onion! By the way, the service was friendly and prompt. Anyway, like Sean and Naoya have said, the homemade tortilla is the hit of this taqueria. It is thin, it holds up well, and it is nice and crispy on the edges. The tacos, either shredded or sliced, have a good amount of onion but could use more cilantro. I'd put the asada as the hands down winner of the taco trio. Incredible flavor. The pastor was o.k. but a bit dry, and the carnita didn't do it for me at all. It didn't have a whole lot of flavor, but did have an aftertaste that was a bit funky. Washed it all down with my tamarind refreshment (it was lunch on a workday!). At $1.75 a taco, it wouldn't be my first choice for a repeat visit (not that it breaks the bank! but still....). 2.5 stars. read more

My husband and I decided to be adventurous after some years of being disappointed in intown Mexican restaurants for their lack of variety and authentic taste. We ventured into this little place after hearing it being mentioned as a decent authentic eatery that local Mexicans frequent. If you do not read or speak Spanish, this is a time to brush up! There are no English menus but boy is it worth it. I've eaten Mexican many many times, more than I cared for, but I have never developed a taste for chips and salsa or tortillas or tacos. I almost never enjoy the refried beans on my platter. And I have been on a hunt for some good mole on the menu forever! We have eaten and enjoyed food at Mexican flea markets and to us, intown Mexican restaurants were overpriced, bland, unexciting and lacked that elusive authenticity. But boy, did this little place changed it all. There are four different types of mole on the menu. The beef tacos were out of this world. The corn tortillas amazingly yummy. The refried beans? We polished it off. The shrimp diablo, delicious. The same foods, a WORLD of a difference. My husband and I now lament frequently of those years of missing out. read more

We heard about this place from our friend who is Mexican and a foodie. Have been a couple of times before and it was good (3-4 stars), but tonight was off the chain. The Chorizo and Egg Torta was sublime. My tacos (beef and and carnitas) were amazing. The salsas were too simple to taste that good--don't know how they did it. A bit of a challenge with the drink order because of my limited Spanish, but it's not worth dinging them because I should have studied more in school. Don't expect chips and salsa, as this isn't one of those places. Just enjoy the food and the Latin soap operas that are playing on the tv while you eat. read more

The staff was very attentive and spoke good English. Most of our group thought the food was just ok. The chicken mole was spicier than normal which may be interesting for you to try out. The tacos al pastor were dry and overcooked. Would recommend La Pastorcita next door for a better taste experience. read more

Well, the service provided was ok. There was only one server during my visit, so I can understand that she was busy. Thankfully, it wasn't busy. I ordered a torta de carne asada (steak sandwich) and, I wasnt impressed with it. Even tough the order came fast, I will rather wait and get a nice meal. It was a really really plain sandwich, compared to all the other Mexican restaurant in the area. In my opinion, they need to step it up! And the meat, it didn't have a lot of flavor. I also ordered a carnitas taco and it was sad also. I tough for a second that I ordered a onion taco. Again, the carnitas didn't have flavor. These tacos rocked my world!!! Taqueria Michoacan is the real deal, folks! I placed a small order of 8 tacos and had a pineapple Jarritos (if you've never had Jarritos before, you haven't lived yet). The meat was chopped a little small for my taste, but fully made up for it with flavor!! The salsa verde was my favorite. Just the right amount of onion & cilantro too. Great service too!! The servers forgave my awful Spanish! I can't wait to go back to try every single thing on that menu!! This place is crazy affordable, so stop what your doing, grab $10, and get ready to have your mind blown!!! read more

Stopped in for a quick bite with a friend on Mon., 09/10/12... Food: We each ordered an al pastor taco & a carnitas taco.... The tacos were served traditional style - in corn tortillas, with onion & cilantro, and a condiment trio caddy of red salsa, green salsa, and marinated onions & habanero peppers. I felt that both tacos were a bit on the dry side, and nothing special in terms of flavors... My friend echoed that sentiment & added that he felt the corn tortillas were also too dry. Service: Waiter / full table service. Our server was a nice latino lady who took good care of us. No issues with service... Atmosphere: A small restaurant, with about 15 tables. The tables have 4 chairs per table, but the tables themselves are VERY small and would not seat even 4 slim ladies comfortably, much less guys... Overall: So-so... the tacos were nothing out of the ordinary (for a taqueria). Nothing really stood out, so 3 stars... read more

I really have mixed feelings about this place: on one hand, the woman who helped me tonight was rude, short, and made me feel like I was an inconvenience. On the other hand, the food was good and reasonably priced. I normally judge my Taquerias by their carne asada, so I got 4 tacos and they were good, but nothing special. I'm satisfied, but there are too many places within a mile that have good food and better service so I won't go back. read more

Wow - this was a shocking disappointment. I figured with the #2 Taco Quest 2009 ranking I would be devouring little sizzling morsels of goodness out of delicious home fried corn tortillas. I found myself staring a a big plate of meat from a steam table scoped into mediocre corn tortillas that ripped open about half the time. I will have to start my own quest. I'll keep this short and sweet. I got 3 tacos: al pastor, carnitas, and asada... the usual suspects for me. And a medium horchata. Came out to $7 something, totally worth it. Coming from SoCal, not the best I've had -- the asada was my favorite of the three -- but I think that may be because I went at an odd hour. Yum. I'm with these other guys. I paid around 5-6 bucks for one each of the chicken, carnitas, and asada soft tacos to go. My Spanish stinks, but it didn't matter, as the two supersweet young women at the front are native English-speakers. My order took about 10 minutes to prepare, but I then had to wait about 30 tense minutes before digging into my take. I was happy when I did: most of the meat was moist, and each taco had one toothsome corn tortilla (yay! I can never find a use for the second one) that did not rip. My favorite of the meats was the chicken--I found the carnitas a little dry--and I preferred the salsa verde. The flavor of the meat wasn't super-exciting, but the texture and the flavor of the other bits and bobs was very nice. Solid. read more

JUST FINISHED eating at the Michoacan Taco Shop. It was absolutely fanastic. I had 3 different tacos; pastour, canitas, and carne asada and some rice and beans. Although the carne asada was a little too dry for my taste they do tacos properly and promptly. My lovely lady and I ordered and had our food in less than 5 minutes. All of the tacos come complete and traditional with the meat of your choice or whatever they have available, CORN tortilla, cilantro, diced onion, and quartered limes on the side. The clean tables are fully stocked with a napkin dispenser and a condiment carousel full of a mild salsa verde, a beautiful red sauce with a good afterburn, and sliced onion marinade. It seems the locals appreciate this taqueria as there are a few within immediate distance to Michoacan and yet it stays busy. Also I was ready to go in Spanish-a-blazin' but it was unnecessary as our waitress spoke good English. Super happy tummy :) read more

This was my first visit. The food was authenticate and very good. They have the best refried beans I've ever had. However, the service was awful. I did receive a greeting when I walked in. Once my food was served, the hostess never came by to see how I was doing. Once I ate I paid at the counter. She simply told me the price and took my money. She did not ask how my food was or wish me a nice day. I left feeling that I was not welcome. This might be why I was the only customer there during lunch. Based on other reviews the service is normally pretty good. Maybe this was a new employee or one having a bad day. Nonetheless, there is no reason for me to return. read more

So I'm out on a scavenger hunt today looking for props in outer Mongolia, and I find myself cruising Buford Highway right at lunch time . . . hmmnn . . . sounds like taco time !! So I went into Taqueria Michoacan since it seemed the the perfect lunch dive and I was feeling a bit adventurous. I quickly cased the joint and concluded that it was safe enough to park and try the food. The menu and the staff quickly had me wishing that I'd taken Spanish 5 times in high school like most of my friends, so I decided to go with old faithful . . . Carne Asada (my server really was sweet and we managed to communicate despite the language barrier). The beef was definitely well done and super thin, but very well seasoned - really reminded me of all of the roadside Costa Rican joints boasting "Typical Food". Throw in the "Typical" salad, refried beans, rice and small corn tortillas and voila !! The interesting part was the salsa trio that accompanied the meal. Red Habanero salsa, Salsa Verde, and Pickled Habaneros with onions. The pickled Habaneros & onions were awesome !! and quickly had me ordering a second Corona to extinguish the fire (even their hot sauce is habanero). Good thing for me I love the heat - but I sure could have used a margarita to was it down if they had them . . . The final kicker - Cash only. If they had a decent Margarita and took credit cards they would have earned themselves a 4 star in my book. read more
