I ordered on uber eats. The food arrived fresh! It was a great value and came pretty fast. The food: Milanesa torta- breaded steak sandwich, yes it's very good and I recommend it. I would get it again. Pretty big too. Chicken Nachos- loaded nachos, I would get again but not the chicken. It was tiny hard cubed pieces of chicken that didn't taste good. Chicken taco- didn't like the chicken but would get the tacos again. Also, I ordered the Birria tacos and they sent me chicken.. I assume they may have just been out of birria at the time, sad day! You can find Taqueria Los Rayos at 3473 Clairmont Rd, Atlanta, GA 30319 where Clairmont crosses Buford Highway just south of the Deering crossing. This is a free-standing building that used to have some fast-food joint like a DQ or Del Taco and it still has the same basic footprint - parking is all along the edges and there's an unattached covered patio in part of the parking lot so you can eat outside. There's a remnant of a drive-through which appears to still be in operation. I've eaten here before, coincidentally on both occasions it was with my usual Buford Highway Restaurant Crawler group - this second time was much better than the first (the first time there was a rather unpleasant sewer backup going on and the smell was hard to get past). You order at the counter at Taqueria Los Rayos and then pick up the food as it comes up. On this Wednesday evening there was on person at the counter and one in back - otherwise it was empty. As with other local area Latino joints, this place caters to the many who live in the nearby apartments and can easily walk by. The food here is fairly authentic - very typical of what you might find in Mexico City or elsewhere in central Mexico. The tacos are double wrapped in corn tortillas and have a hefty serving. I had this meat plate - don't remember what it's called on the menu but it had beef, pork and bacon with sides. Good but a bit much for a single serving. Make sure you order a Mexican Coke with your meal - a bit of a given - you can thank me later. Service here is quite good if sparse - I think everyone enjoyed their food. Like Taqueria El Rey Del Taco, Taqueria Los Rayos is a good late night option for authentic and inexpensive Mexican food on Buford Highway. Unlike El Rey, Los Rayos is located deeper ITP (inside the perimeter) near Buford Highway and Clairmont Road. While the business address is on Clairmont, the restaurant actually has two entrances, one on Buford and one on Clairmont. At the time of writing this review, Los Rayos' business hours are as follows: Monday to Thursday - 9am to 1am Friday - 9am to 4am Saturday - 9am to 5am Sunday - 9am to 3am Like popular El Taco Veloz up the road, Los Rayos has drive-thru service. Inside, the restaurant has eight four or five-top tables, three two-tops, and a bar that seats eight for an approximate comfortable seating capacity of 50 customers. There's also a fanned, covered patio outside featuring a half-dozen circular tables. Parking isn't an issue as there's plenty of space. This is very much a casual, no-frills Mexican joint. There's a big TV at the bar and a smaller one facing a dining area off to the side. The small restrooms are clean. You can place and pick up your order at the counter or you can sit down for table service. Los Rayos specializes in their version of al pastor, which is marinated and sauteed pork *and* steak (in many cases, al pastor is prepared only with pork). It, along with other meat options, are offered in taco, burrito, platter, and torta (sandwich) form. Along with al pastor, meat choices include: Bistec - steak Chorizo - Mexican sausage Suadero - "flat meat" (thin slice cut between belly and leg) Pollo - chicken Cabeza - cow's cheek Lengua - cow's tongue Barbacoa - made with goat here Carnitas - pork Tripa - pork chitlins (intestines/bowels) Tacos run from $1.75 to $1.95 each, quesadillas $3.00 to $4.50 each, burritos $4.50 each, tortas $5.00 to $5.50 each, special plates $9.00 each, and fajitas $9.95 each. Seafood is offered Friday through Sunday and includes items such as campechana (shrimp cocktail) and ceviche made with red snapper and lemon juice. The tacos look great. Each is served with two filling corn tortillas. After all the juices and sauces soak into the tortillas, one tortilla isn't strong enough to hold a single taco together. Each taco comes with chopped cilantro and white onion. Marinated onions and a lime wedge are served on the side. Taste-wise, I think the tacos are OK. I'm not a huge fan of the somewhat dense tortillas and I think some of the meats could be seasoned better, but that's what the salsas are for. The carnitas (pulled pork) are partially chewy and dry. Lengua (tongue) is probably my favorite and the bistec (steak) is satisfying. The lengua texture is smooth and soft. Cabeza (cheek) isn't bad, though it's a bit rubbery and bland. Tripa has an expectedly unpleasant flavor/odor. I like tripe, but not in this form. Overall, the ingredients seem sufficiently fresh. There are two salsas, one red and one green, available in squeeze bottles. Both salsas are tasty. I prefer the green salsa. It's milder in both spiciness and tanginess. I've also tried the al pastor special plate. The specials are served on metal plates that are pretty much like hot skillets. Corn tortillas serve as the base and are topped with bacon, melted cheese, fresh tomato, avocado, and white onion slices, a whole cooked jalapeno, and the meat of your choice. Additionally, each plate comes with a side of hot corn tortillas (wrapped in foil) and lime. While it looks terrific, the al pastor special is simply too heavy and greasy. It's delicious for several bites, but the excessive oil makes it a difficult entree to finish. The savory yet fatty bits of bacon only exacerbate the issue. The extra tortillas aren't really needed for this dish unless they're intended to sop up the fat. Try a Mexican beverage with your meal. The horchata (sweet rice drink) is good and isn't overly sweet nor chalky. They've also got juices (e.g. jamaica - hibiscus) and Jarritos Mexican soda. Service is fine. read more

This stretch of Buford Highway offers numerous taquerias, and Los Rayos offers a fine selection of tacos that my fiance and I actually prefer over other, more popular restaurants such as El Rey Del Taco down the road. Despite the lack of a significant lunch crowd on a recent Saturday afternoon, my fiance and I tried this place out since they rank among the few shops that offer goat tacos. The cooks here spice the goat meat a little differently here than the more saucy preparations we have had at other taquerias, which makes for a robustly flavored bite. We additionally enjoyed the serviceable chorizo and tender-crisp tripe varieties. Tacos here arrive double wrapped in El Milagro corn tortillas which, while not housemade, do an admirable job of keeping things together and adding a pleasantly corny taste. We also appreciated the citrusy verde and smoky roja salsas on offer that added both piquancy and freshness to our tacos. Our cashier was sweet and humored our broken attempt to order in Spanish. Los Rayos offers makeshift patio seating with a few tables in the parking lot, and indoor seating is distanced with every other table blocked off. The owner was nice enough to still let us order the very few items on the menu available at that time (around 230am) this place has plenty of parking in the back. The restaurant is pretty neat and did a good job keeping the traditional Mexican culture alive with their music and decor. Came in here with a big group of 16 or so people. Place is set up so you order at the counter, but they had someone actually wait tables and she did a really good job. Better than some high end restaurants. Place is known for their tacos. Specifically the Al Pastor which is a steak and pork taco. They have a bunch of other tacos you can order such as chicken, steak chorizo, and pork. But they also have some weird toppings like chitlins and cow's tongue. All are around $1.75 to $2. They also have burritos with the same toppings. You can get this with just meat and cheese or you can add rice and beans. I ordered an Al Pastor taco and a steak burrito. The taco was alright. Nothing to special. The burrito was much better. It's about a foot long and stuffed from top to bottom with meat, beans, and rice. My girlfriend had the shrimp fajitas. They give you plenty of shrimp and veggies. Taste was just ok. The guacamole is pretty decent. Loaded with tomatoes. The chips are really good; definitely homemade. This place is open super late; Till 1am on weekdays and 4am and 5am on Friday and Saturday, respectively. This place would make a great spot for late night eating if you're near Buford. Much cheaper than any Tex-Mex place you'd find in town, and I love the presentation, it looks so authentic - it is authentic. I decided on the chicken taco and the barbacoa (goat) taco. The chicken was dryer than I'd like, but it was well seasoned enough, as for the barbacoa - I'm in love..I can't recall ever trying a goat meat taco, but this is good. It's super flavorful and perfectly tender - I know what my regular order will be. I also got to try the BF's steak and pulled pork tacos, both well cooked and tender. Decent tacos. Corn tortillas are a little weak and I don't know enough about how tortillas are prepared to offer an opinion why. I had three tacos - chorizo, lengua and barbacoa. Chorizo was the best. The other two, particularly the lengua, were a bit bland. Beef tongue isn't the most exciting taco meat to begin with, so it generally needs help. Three tacos make a good meal for an average person. Two very popular squeeze-bottle sauces at the table - one mild green sauce, one somewhat hotter red sauce. Hard to judge the service. I was there with a party of about twenty Yelpers. Our server did well to handle us all, efficiently taking orders. The food came out fairly quickly, as I'd expect from a BuHi taqueria. No one was sure how we were to pay, so we all eventually queued up at the register and told the server what we each had. Maybe with a normal size group they deliver the check to the table. You can get take-out at the register, but otherwise it's regular table service. Or sit at the counter. Overall, not bad. Taqueria Los Rayos is one of those places that you might not wander into. It's rather plain on the outside, but we're all about adventure. Weeknights they're open until 1am and even later on weekends. The staff speaks both English and Spanish very well and are very polite. They have free WiFi and when we were there everyone had an iPod or a laptop out at the table. They also have DirecTV which is usually tuned to some sports channel. This is one of those places you order at the front and they bring it to your table. Most of the items have sample pictures available so you know approximately what you'll be getting. I went with the Deluxe Beef & Pork plate, which had sliced tomato, avacado, on several small corn tortillas, with a ton of beef and pork piled on top with cheese. You definitely want to come here if you want some late night greasy food. Much better than a Waffle House and you can leave stuffed for a little over $10. read more

We waited about 10 minutes, nothing shabby! Authentic tacos! No idea which ones were which--but they all had great flavor. I loved the side salsas, green was my favorite. I try both of the tacos and I really only liked the steak. The steak needed a little more salt and it was a little dry, at least the steak was better than the chicken. Chicken was a little flavorful but it was really dry. This is the reason why I never liked to order chicken when I go to a Mexican Restaurant. I didn't find the food here to be particularly flavorful. It was mediocre at best. My wife ordered a chicken burrito and I had steak fajitas and neither of us particularly was blown away by the fare. The chicken was dry and my steak had very little flavor - it didn't taste like it had even been properly seasoned. The steak was just little scraps of beef (like they serve in mall food court cheesesteaks) rather than a properly cooked and sliced piece of flank or skirt steak - for $10 I honestly would have expected better. I'm not one to give a bad review unless the food is absolutely appalling. I can't speak much about the ambience as this is for a delivery order from UberEATS. I ordered right before closing, so this may have something to do with my food as well. First, I found a rubber band inside one of my tacos. I was chewing on it for the longest time thinking it was a tendon. Nope, 'twas a rubber band. Delicious! Secondly, the steak tacos and all the tortillas were like...ingesting dust. They were the driest things I've ever had in my life, and I love pork sung. I'm glad I got hungry around this area and chose to try a couple of tacos here. I got the cabeza (cheek) and barbacoa (goat) tacos, which I don't see very often in my own neighborhood. Oh my, I don't know if it's because it's been so long, but the cabeza taco was really good. It's also the perfect vehicle to try the tomatillo or red salsa that is brought to your table. The barbacoa really didn't need any extra flavoring and was also very good. All washed down with some refreshing jamaica. A couple of notes about this place: -it's sandwiched between Clairmont Rd. and Buford Hwy, with entrances to the parking lot from both streets -it's a sit in and take out restaurant. Typically you order at the counter when you walk in but since we had a large group, one of the staff members took our orders at our tables. She was fantastic and took great care of us. I can't say the same about my steak burrito and chorizo taco that I ordered. It wasn't anything special but I just came from volunteering at Open Hand Atlanta that morning and skipped breakfast so was famished. I'm so happy I was introduced to this place! It's no fancy pants restaurant, it's a little gritty, and has a ton of character. My five star ratings are reserved for those businesses in which I can't imagine how I could improve on the experience. Los Rayos just does it for me. First, many of the menu items have little photographs of the food next to them in case you were wondering what they looked like. The Carne Asada Steak meal looked exceptionally delicious from it's image. All of the televisions are on Univision and are playing telenovellas. The bathrooms are painted a rusty red color with synthetic topiaries and baskets hung on the walls. Now, I guarantee, that within five minutes of having placed your order, you will have your food; my record time was 2 minutes. The tacos are prepared with soft, mini corn tortillas, cilantro, meat of choice, two kinds of onions and a side of the perfect sauce. The chicken quesedillas are delicious, with plenty of cheese and juicy, spicy chicken. You'll definitely need extra napkins. Been meaning to try this place for awhile since I moved to the 'hood. My friend Mike M. summed it up rather nicely in his review, "For a low-key, authentic Mexican Taqueria, head here." I remember when this place used to be a Dairy Queen. Oh how times (and the neighborhood) have changed. I ordered the three taco meal of one lengua, one steak, and one chicken. Also opted for an extra / side of beans and rice plus a horchata (my go-to beverage of choice at authentic taquerias) to wash it all down with. I was asked if I wanted cilantra, onions and cheese on the tacos and I answered in the affirmative. The tacos are presented open-faced on a double layer of fresh masa corn tortillas. They are covered with melted Mexican white cheese and finely chopped onions and cilantro. Also included is a garnish of delicious grilled onions plus lime wedges. These tacos are great. They are filling and well made. The rice and beans were served together in a bowl topped with melted cheese. My only complaint is that the green sauce (served in mustard / ketchup squeeze contaimers) is a little watered down and weak. The red sauce, a smoky tomato / tomatillo rendition, is decidedly better than the green and also comes in the squeeze container. Will have to add this place as yet another go-to spot for my frequent Mexican fare fixes. NOTE: The smell some other Yelpers have mentioned is indeed a pressing problem; however, only so if you sit near the bathroom area. So avoid that part of the retaurant. These tacos are served on soft corn tortillas, ask for cilantro and onions, you are good to go! I have to admit I would rate it higher if I had been here first before El Rey de Tacos. Los Rayos has a good menu, and I have always had good service here. The interior doesn't add any stars, and not having beer takes away at least 1/2 star. Pros: cheap, fresh, authentic, good service. When I'm looking for authentic Mexican food, this is the first place that comes to mind. I've been going to this place since I first moved to Atlanta 5 years ago (when they were at the old location near the Dekalb Airport). Since then, I believe the ownership has changed hands but the menu and quality of the food has remained the same. The new location is in a refurbished Dairy Queen with a fully functional drive through window. Apparently white people will go to any place that resembles a DQ because I was usually the only one at the old locale. Their Al Pastor (pork and beef) is old faithful. I frequently order the "super burrito" which also has cheese, rice and beans. It is served with a red-brown salsa (salsa verde is available if you ask for it). The barbacoa (goat) is excellent. Pretty lean, cooked in some spices. All of the tacos come wrapped in 2 warm corn tortillas, with fresh cilantro and few veggies. If you like ceviche, they make it on the weekends and it is very good as well. No tex-mex here. Ground beef is not on the menu. Only freshly chopped meat. Awesome. -- I love that my huevos con chorizo came with slices of avocado and tomato as well as fantastic refried beans topped with chihuahua cheese (I love it when they're chunky!) and rice. -- Tacos come with fantastic grilled onions, cilantro, and lime. Divine. -- There's a drive thru (although you may wait...) -- Outdoor dining (even if its on the corner of Clairmont and Buford) What's Not So Great... -- Its like you're eating in a Dairy Queen, primarily because it used to be one. Bah. -- The coffee is odd, even though it is served on its own plate (but with Kroger brand coffee mate - ick) -- No sweet tea, but if you're into Mexican soda, you're in luck! -- No alcohol means no ritas! -- While the papas fritas are delish, I really would have loved some sort of breakfast potato... -- Service is slow-ish (i.e. get ready to wait!) If you've been looking for an authentic Mexican dive, this is it and you will be rewarded. Its a great idea for Sunday brunch, just because there really aren't that mainly place that have true huevos rancheros on their menu. Houston, we have a taco (that is almost good enough to compete with those offered in your TexMex haven)! After living in Texas for the past two years, and Los Angeles for many years before that, I was a little leery of indulging in very many tacos in ATL. However, this place was very highly recommended on Yelp, and the boyfriend and I were starving. The good news. Tacos are indeed cheap and yummy: we split 5 tacos between us for less than 10 dollars including tax. The better news: yeah, home girl got full off of two tacos! Boyfriend got full off three! (perhaps even better news if you are a night owl: they are open late... till 3am on a Sunday, which seems pretty uncharacteristic of an establishment in the South) Definitely get the al pastor if you go. Carnitas are a solid choice as well; chicken is mediocre and dry. The goat was pretty unremarkable. But hey, if I have at least two types of tacos that can satisfy my cheap-quick-tasty-Mexican craving, that's good enough for me! Especially with the yummy green and red salsas that come standard with the meal. read more
