Stopped here after a day at the beach for dinner (with kids). Bottom line, I'd come back again. The space is actually pretty cool and feels welcoming. They have a huge bar with a lot of selections and a big beer list as well. The green and red chicken enchiladas were excellent and the portions were big. If you're looking for the classic "chicken, cheese and rice" their version is really good. The chicken was very flavorful and the entire dish was enjoyed as well. Great little Mexican restaurant in Jacksonville Beach. For the sports fan there are TV's throughout so you can catch the games while eating. Our waitress was accommodating while we figured out what's lol we wanted. Speaking of the food I tried their strawberry kiwi frozen margarita and that was delicious. A giant helping of complimentary chips and salsa that my party of three did not even finish. We all ordered different main courses, I had the steak burrito. Before the meal arrived I was offered and red and green sauces, and I accepted those, I do enjoy a little spice on my food. As for my burrito, I had to add the green and red sauce to it. It was lacking flavor. I was really surprised at how much flavor the burrito was missing. Once I added the red and green sauces the dish was perfect. I ordered a steak chimichanga through uber eats, and I really liked the way it came packaged. It was tamper proof and all the food was wrapped which I really appreciate.. The presentation was nice, I like the way everything was set up and laid out. However, I didn't like how the sauce like sour cream and guacamole were on top as it made the whole thing mushy. We have been disappointed since moving to Jax Beach area last year that all the Mexican places were "fancy" - weird, elaborate dishes that cost way too much for what they are. This place is amazing- the food was perfect, service was fantastic, and the total bill was under $20 for lunch for the two of us (before tip). Chips were crispy and the salsa was perfectly spicy and super flavorful. If I could give ZERO stars to this place after tonight, I would. The worst delivery experience in a long time!!!! We have ordered several more times from this place since my initial review and it seemed to get a little less enjoyable each time. BUT, we decided we wanted Mexican tonight and knew we could use Door Dash for the food. To say our order was messed up is an understatement and if that was not bad enough the service I received from the said "manager" was even more appalling. We did not get our cheese queso at all though charged for it and tipping on it, my cheese enchilada had meat in it and I don't eat meat and haven't for over 40 years, and my husband's chimichanga meal that was supposed to have beans and rice had double beans and honestly looked like a box of slop. He is not picky and even he was grossed out by how horrible it looked. We eat with our eyes first and it was awful to look at and not too tasty. He threw most of it out. We threw away the enchilada with meat also. I called the manager right away before we even began to eat and expressed my displeasure and these were his responses: (1) It is Door Dash's fault, not the restaurants as they (Door Dash) send in the order, yet my ticket attached to the bag was exactly what I ordered (2) He could not refund my money, as he does not get paid from Door Dash for four weeks and he doesn't have that amount of money to refund me (might be a sign that you will be closing soon due to operating cash) (3) I could drive out there (again the purpose of Door Dash is not driving) and he would replace the items that were missing or made incorrectly When I explained to him that none of those was an acceptable solution, he said that was all he could do and I should not have ordered through Door Dash. I should have called the restaurant for pick up. Why would you use a vendor that you don't trust for your delivery? Unbelievable! I WARN you not to order delivery from this place and I will tell everyone I know and I warned him of that. Is it really worth your reputation and loss of a customer plus other potential customers for a $25 order? Short sighted at best. Bye bye El Potro! read more

While I was visiting Jacksonville Beach 2 years ago I stumbled on to this Mexican Restaurant, it was a take out , I was very impressed with my burrito carnitas. Second time 6 months ago I dined in for lunch and enjoyed the Chili Relleno Ordered a Burrito to go for later . To my surprise when I opened the container it was just a flour tortilla kinda wrapped carnitas. Runny onion sauce . It was gross ended up throwing it away w/o eating . Swearing I'll never come back , I was starving and thought I'd would see if it was a fluke last time . I ordered very specifically burrito carnitas. Well when I opened the container it was a huge mess not even wrapped authentic style burrito. I am a frequent visitor to El Potro as my yelp checkins can attest. They have so many different options to try instead of just specializing in one area [Taco Lu or Burrito Gallery]. The staff service is better at Cantina Louie, but the food is about equal in deliciousness. They have recently upgraded their vegetarian menu to include more vegan options. Be sure to ask the waiter if you don't receive one. The soapillas were very disappointing. They were hard and crispy as opposed to the light and airy soapillas at Taco Lu. read more

Let me start off by saying WOW. You never know the true potential of a day until you end it with a night at El Porta. To give you a little background I'm a 25 year old just totally caught up in the work, eat, sleep, repeat routine. Needless to say, at this phase in life it's easy to find yourself lost, scared and afraid of what is to come next. This is exactly how I felt walking into el porta tonight with my friends Madeline, Carlton, and Drew Grossman. We started out with some chips and salsa (obviously) and then quickly stared throwing back some margaritas. Let me tell ya, the frozen ones will really set the mood right if ya know what I mean ;) . Madeline was just being totally chill and we even learned that she might be the real female Trump, Carlton, well she has always been a lovely woman to be around but el porta just really brought out the beat in her. She was literally glowing. As for myself and drew, we are sitting on the toilet right now with much remorse of our dinner selection. If you have read this far you must not be actually looking for quality food, and that's why I would recommend el porta. Whether it's a first date, or an anniversary dinner I promise you will not be disappointed. This restaurant is a family favorite of ours. It is traditional Mexican cooking with friendly staff who always go the extra mile. Is it trendy? No. Is it comfortable and will you get a good meal? Yes. There are big TVs in the bar area for watching sports so I assume that's where a bulk of their business comes from. There are comfy booths throughout. I came here on a dreary wet day. I originally went to another Mexican place and wasn't impressed with their menu. So, I came here. I hadn't been here in almost 20 years. I'm glad I stopped in. I think there was 3 people sitting, including myself, and 1 waiter. My waiter was Christian. I ordered a frozen strawberry Margarita, no salt, with silver taquila (not house) so that took a little longer. I ordered some queso and 2 beef soft tacos. My food came out before my drink. I waited to eat until I got my drink and some Valentina hot sauce. The drink was amazing. I could have had another 1 or 2 of those. I didnt realize it was an extra $1 to have strawberry. ‍ . Anyways, the tacos were big and stuffed. The beef was juicy and well flavored. I almost couldn't finish everything. Overall my meal was $19 plus I left a tip.
