I've had El Pipila countless of times when I lived in the area. I love supporting Women owned businesses so ordering from here is an easy decision when I'm feeling Mexican food. The only caveat is the open hours, but I understand that a majority of the traffic comes from workers on weekdays during lunch hours. Throughout the years, these are some of the foods I've ordered: 1. Pozole (5/5): If it's cold outside and you crave soup, this is the item to order. Savory yet tart and warm, this is such a deep and well rounded dish with plenty of soft and tender pork. 2. Chicken tacos (5/5): The chicken is seasoned, cooked well, and with the toppings and wrapped in their delicious tortilla, this is so good. This comes with a side of chips and some spicy salsas. 3. Chicken Burrito (4/5): The chicken here is similar seasoned to that in the tacos, and is cooked very well too. I think it's soaked in soup until they serve it because it was soft but what made the burrito a little soggier. I ordered black beans and added guac to the burrito. The only sad point was that the tortilla was soggy from the black beans or chicken. Overall, very delicious. Places like this should have a line out the door!! Lucky for you, there's not, yet. It's a family owned restaurant by mom and daughter, go Mama! More than that, the food is delicious and so fresh! The tacos are $5 each and you can probably do 3 easily. The carne asada is tasty and the Al pastor might have been even better. It's done with pineapple and all! The best part is the homemade corn tortilla that isn't deep fried like most places. The quesadilla is made with the same corn tortillas and it is soooo good with sour cream inside making it unlike any other quesadilla I've had. The aqua fresca $5 all looked tempting but we went with horchata, which was creamy and flavorful. Lastly this has to be one of the cleanest restaurants in all of SF! It's pleasant to actually sit at the bar and watch them make the food right in front of you. Watch out on the hours though. So if you're looking for some decent Mexican food in SOMA, this is the spot. It's a little pricey, but I can't imagine what their monthly lease payment is for commercial space in this area. It's just part of living in the city. They have to charge a lot in order to make a profit and cover expenses, including higher food costs and what not. My only complaint is sometimes they don't get the order right. I've had this happen a few times where I say no salsa and I get salsa. that's my only frustration. Dare I say, best tacos ever?!?! House made corn tortillas that have the soft texture of flour tortillas, plus tasty generous fillings, equals the best tacos I've had. Downside? They close at 3pm. Granted I don't tend to order tacos when they're on the menu because places usually either skimp on the fillings or the shell is crunchy or super dry. Def not the case here! My fave is the Al pastor. Tacos are so tasty, it's like they're really cooking with love. My local neighborhood taqueria, run by a mother and daughter team. The mother is always behind the counter cooking and boy does she whip up some delicious stuff. My go-to on a dreary afternoon (or, truth be told, after a hangover) is her delicious pozole verde, a rich soup with a thick chile/chicken broth, loads of hominy, and fresh onions and cabbage on top to give it a crunch. Normally though, I'll just order a burrito and I'm always satisfied. The chips are house-made, and do ask for the salsa, which they keep in condiment bottles behind the fridge. After testing her dishes at various pop-ups, she and her daughters decided to put a stake in the ground in the Design District. I became aware of this place because their pozole verde landed at #27 on 7x7's Top Takeout Dishes in SF during the pandemic. This I needed to try, so I ordered the $15 Chicken Pozole Verde, a particularly rich tomatillo stew filled with local chicken, bacon, serrano, cilantro, and hominy and topped with onion, shredded cabbage, and sliced watermelon radish (photo: https://bit.ly/3xn3lNP). Another TooGoodToGo review for this place: The purpose of participating on the app is to avoid throwing out perfectly good meals at the end of the day by selling them for less instead. Bakeries means baked goods, restaurants usually do meals. If a restaurant runs out of food, they normally cancel orders for the day. This place just mixed up some loose corn and white onion, added some tap water, and called it a $15 entree. Corn and tap water do not a soup make, but "corn soup" is nonetheless what it was called . I checked the menu- they don't actually serve this. So they literally threw together some random ingredients and decided to make a quick buck off of slop. Though nestled in a rather modern looking apartment complex, right next to a very tasty Detroit pizza joint. What a pleasant oasis those two restaurants make in this hood! Pozole Verde: Despite the fact that it's a soup, it's extremely filling! Loads of chewy carby hominy, that are so hearty. Tons of stringy pulled chicken, like the texture of pulled pork. And bacon, because bacon is awesome! Also, lots of tortilla strips since tossing in some deep fried corn tortillas makes it even heartier. Plus I'm a huge cilantro fan so I was pleased to see that herb representing strongly in the batch of green ingredients. I will say that it had a distinctive kick, perhaps a lot of serrano chilies. Ordered 2 chicken Tacos to go. I get back to work to eat, and the tacos have like boiled potato cubes in the taco. I just wanna know who puts boiled potatoes in their tacos? Flavor wise, tacos are lacking a lot of. To be honest, the only good thing about this place is they make their corn tortilla chips in house. First and last visit here. Each taco is $5.00, which is way to high for how terrible these are. I can get street tacos that have so much more flavor, for half the cost of these tacos. Our company got a catered boxed lunch for us from this restaurant. I had the vegetarian enchiladas, with rice and beans. It was delicious and I wish there was more of it. The enchiladas were chock full of nicely cooked veggies, covered in a red chili sauce and cheese. OMG! Only thing, I wished they gave a side of some sauce for the rice and beans though. I had my routine Covid test at the end of the block and was walking back to work. Saw the sign on the sidewalk and remembered that I'd been meaning to try the breakfast burrito. I went with the chorizo over the potatoes. Both come with eggs, jack cheese, pico, and beans. These are made fresh to order, so only a 5 minute wait. The tortilla was grilled to have a perfect crispy outside. Hearty bites of egg with chorizo, creamy melted jack, and vibrant freshness from the pico de gallo came together perfectly. It's normally served with tortilla chips, but I asked for tortillas instead, and the super friendly staff here immediately whipped up two homemade yellow corn tortillas on the griddle hot and fresh! As far as the soup goes, it was definitely on the acidic side, but was also balanced out nicely by the herbs and other seasonings. I learned about El Pípila during a recent meeting; what intrigued me most about this business is that they got started with a Kiva loan (if you don't know about Kiva.org yet, you should check it out...its' kind of like Kickstarter only that you get your money (a micro loan) back once the business is successfully). Anyways, I'm digressing: after said meeting I went to check out El Pípila right away and I have to say I'm quite a fan already. I asked the lady at the counter what she would recommend and she walked me through the menu, explaining each item and pointing at them in the kitchen. I ended up choosing the enchildas and since I wanted to try a couple flavors, I ordered one with chicken and one with vegetables. (I will have to try the sopes on my next visit; they looked delicious as well.) My order was up in no time and I sat down at one of the many tables inside The Hall. I really liked the chicken enchilada and thought the vegetable one was decent, but not amazing. The only thing that I would recommend is to just get rid of the bit of iceberg lettuce that was strewn on the side. I know people like to use lettuce as a filler/decoration, but the fact that it was cold and didn't add anything, just made me dislike it. A group of friends and I had tickets to a show nearby. We decided to meet up at The Hall since it was close and offered variety. After having a couple glasses of wine, I decided to try La Pipila. We grabbed dinner on Wednesday, March 15th around 7pm. *Chips and Guacamole ($8) *Enchiladas: two enchiladas served with rice and beans, filled with Pollo - con salsa verde ($12) *Tacos de Pollo: two pollo tacos garnished with onion, cilantro and lime ($8) Unfortunately, they had run out of carnitas, so they gave us the tacos with chicken. (They normally come with carnitas.) I only took a bite of one taco, but I found it super bland. Even with the added salsa they gave us, it needed more flavor. I felt the same way about the guac. Tasted almost like plain avocado. It needed more lime juice, peppers, onions, etc. Just more eveything. I didn't try the enchiladas, but I'm guessing they didn't have much flavor either.
