This hotel was so bad it actually wrapped all the way around and became entertainment. The place looked like the Bates Motel got a makeover from Temu. Check-in instructions said my room door would be open and the key would be inside. They got the "door open" part right. The key, however, was participating in a completely different vacation. I called, and to their credit, they quickly brought one over. After unpacking, I discovered a lovely collection of treasures left behind by previous guests: press-on nails, perfume, random personal items, and what appeared to be either a sex toy or the world's most confusing shower accessory sitting on a dirty towel. Staff offered me another room, but at that point I was already unpacked and emotionally invested in seeing how much stranger this stay could get. Then I hopped in the shower and discovered there was no soap or shampoo. Apparently cleanliness was an optional add-on package. They did bring some after I called. The night's entertainment featured a woman driving onto the property, jumping out to argue with some guys, speeding off dramatically, then returning later for the encore performance. The walls were apparently made from the same material as potato chips because I could hear every conversation outside my door. Overall, if you're looking for a luxury experience, keep driving. If you're looking for a hotel that feels like a deleted scene from a low-budget crime documentary, this place absolutely delivers. read more

You get what you pay for. Roaches in the bathroom, ants in the living area. Dirty towel behind the bathroom door and sand on the floor. Wifi was unusable and fridge was set on so cold it froze my items. Room was not made up for the second night, leaving me with one towel, roaches, sandy floor and ants. This motel isn't fancy, but the room i stayed in was very clean, and the bed was comfy. I really liked the fact that there was no box spring under the mattress for bugs to hide between the mattress and box spring. It was a basic room, and everything in it worked as it should, like the TV, coffee maker, microwave, fridge. Oh, and they're DOG FRIENDLY!!! I checked in last minute because of an emergency, and the staff, especially Jason, the manager, was extremely helpful to me. They showed so much kindness to me that it really alleviated some of my stress. The motel is located off the main street, which is nice because it's very quiet, but it's walking distance to a lot of businesses and restaurants. I have read some negative reviews about this place, and I think a lot of issues mentioned are being fixed. It's been recently painted with very vibrant colors, and the rooms are being updated. Do not stay at this place. This place is beyond run down. The day before we were supposed to go there we had a message sent to us saying we had to go to a different hotel to check in. We pulled up to the other hotel at 7pm walk in and they inform us our room isnt ready yet. Its 7pm like wtf? We finally get our room in this shady looking place. They have no curtains for the windows. The back window is missing a lock. The tv doesnt have a remote there is black mold in the refrigerator it was disgusting and it took over an hour for someone to come take care of the window by that time we were over it packing up and getting out of there. I will give the motel another try because I feel like it's worth another shot. The tv internet was down so no tv, my front door to my room ( number 7) was broken and when I got to my room the door was open and the bathroom window was open too. When I came home from fishing the maid had left my door open! Not only unlocked but open ( a jar) nothing was stolen, so phew! I called the front desk ( which is at their other location/ trees motel) the lady told me that they knew the door was broken and she would remind the maid to close the door. We've stayed at the El Rancho Motel a handful of times over the years and it's been mostly positive experiences, except for one year when they lost our reservation and rented out our room and nearly derailed our entire vacation, but when we actually had a room to stay in it was clean, had daily maid service, and the management was friendly. Alas, that was about 10 years ago and this place has definitely changed for the worse. We stayed here again this July and in the room we booked (one of their bigger rooms with a full kitchen) it was obvious it wasn't well taken care of - it had stains on the floor, tagging carved into the walls, multiple cracked floor tiles, the toilet paper roll holder was broken and hanging on by a thread, the shampoo dispenser was empty and broken off from the wall, the bathroom sink handle was broken, the AC unit was making loud and obnoxious noises, the WiFi password didn't work, and worst of all there were ants and not just one or two but hundreds, it was literally an infestation of ants. Those were just the things we noticed as soon as we checked in, later on we would discover the kitchen had less than the bare minimum of cutlery plates and cups, the beds were incredibly squeaky, and the walls were paper thin so much so that we struggled to get any decent sleep the entire time we were there as we could hear our neighbors every move. On top of that the maids came into our room only ONCE during our 7 day stay and all they did was change out a single trash can - no beds made, no new sheets, no nothing! And when we called the front office about some of our issues they were mostly combative - we told them the Wi-Fi wasn't working and they said no other guests had any issue and it must be our mistake (it wasn't!) and when we brought up the ant infestation there was no apology and they didn't act surprised at all they just said we must have left food out and to not do that! Even with all the bad I do have to say there is at least one good thing that the El Rancho has going for it and that is the manager Jason. He went above and beyond trying to rectify all of our issues - he fixed the bathroom sink handle, he fixed the noisy AC unit, he brought over a brand new fan for one of the bedrooms and a brand new pasta strainer for our spaghetti dinner, he brought over ant traps to aid the infestation, and he brought over new towels and kept us well stocked on toilet paper. But even an excellent manager can't save the shortcomings of this place. So overall, even with Jason's 5 star service, the El Rancho gets a 1/5 stars (I would give it 0 if I could). We will not be staying here again and I implore anyone reading this review to look elsewhere for lodging. read more

This review is for room 8 on 11-13-19 I really wanted to give this place 5 stars because Crystal at CHECKIN was so super great. And the room was clean and quite ADORABLE. With tax the room rate was $67.26. So it's a real bargain for such a cute clean room. I'm torn between 4-3 stars. I'm still debating as I write. Be aware that you must call ahead for a late CHECKIN. The office is open 8am - 10pm 7 days a week. They will accommodate late checkin if you call ahead! Perhaps other rooms have other beds? But on the night I was there my bed squeaked quite badly. Enough to repeatedly wake up a light sleeper. I recommend you test the bed if that is a concern. This is the ONLY issue that caused me to drop stars because I find the bed very important in a motel. Other than squeaking, it was fine. It's not a pillow top mattress. A memory foam topper would probably make it perfect...so with a topper, and if they eliminated the squeak I'd have given the room 5 stars. Absolutely. I rather doubt that many people use the coffee makers in rooms so this probably isn't a big deal or a star dropper. But in case you do, be aware that the cord is very short. Perhaps you could borrow an extension cord? As it was, you'd need to sit it on the floor to make coffee. The hot water takes about a minute to get to the sink. Just be aware and plan ahead. I'd rather have a nice clean sink like this one, and wait for hot water than fast water into a cruddy sink. A minute only seems long if you're standing there waiting! It's really fine at this price point...and when someone warns you ahead. I will probably stop in again if we're in Bishop. I like that it's off the beaten path. I'll just test the bed first! We did a late check in, arriving at midnight. Unfortunately, there was a mix up and we were given the wrong key. The office is only staffed until 10pm so there was nothing we could do about it. The room we got was pretty small and the bed wasn't very comfortable. The next day, I got a message from an employee apologizing and immediately offered me a refund for the 1st night. Someone else brought us the key to the room we were supposed to get and again apologized for the mix up. The new room was way better! We booked a room with a kitchen and it was very large, with a separate kitchen and pretty large bathroom. The room looked just like the pics on their website (minus the dog lol). It's a motel in a small town out in the middle of nowhere so if you're expecting the Ritz you're going to be disappointed but it was pretty much what we expected. Air conditioning worked well. Walls are a bit thin, but luckily our neighbors were quiet and with the air on it drowned out any noises. The clientele hanging around the place was a bit sketchy and the neighborhood is just ok. But like I said we needed a place to sleep for the night and the price was right. Not sure about all the great reviews.. I booked this hotel basted on a friends recommendation. I stayed in room 2 and this is what I thought when I first walked in. Cons: It smelled like smoke (cigarette) Paint was chipped off the walls in areas. The area where the hotel is located is sketchy. Pros: The gal at the desk was very pleasant and nice. Room was clean. Bed was comfortable. Quiet room. Originally, they wanted to give me room number 6 but I asked to be switched to a different room because there is a generator right outside that made a humming sound. Would I stay here again? Probably not. I'm more of a Ritz Carlton kind of gal when it comes to staying at a hotel. But with that said, I would've rather stayed at a campsite. read more

A small bakery is one block away. +QUIET -- This place is on a very quiet street. It's NOT sketchy, I guess people who think it's sketchy must live in gated communities or something. Didn't hear the neighbors (two young kids next door) or road noise. Only noise I heard was coming from the front door when the wind howling or cars entering/leaving premises. +CLEAN -- for a pet friendly place, I didn't see any pet dander on the bed, sheets, and bath towels. Impressive! -- the toilet was a little dirty when we arrived, but I just wiped up a small spot real quick. No big deal. -- 2 lamps were burned out, but there were so many other lights we could turn on, it wasn't a problem. If you're bringing a pet, be honest and tell the front desk that you have a pet. We paid the quote we saw online, but after inquiring about a pet fee, they said it was fine. AWESOME! If you have a quiet and well behaved dog, you're good. It was dog friendly and reviews seemed decent enough but I have to tell you that room number 9 is disgusting and dirty. I would have drove home right away if weren't so tired from hiking that day. We kept our clothes and shoes on in the room at all times. Ants all over the place, bathroom is tiny and dingy. The area is sketchy and there are many interesting characters hanging around to boot. I'd rather sleep in my car than stay here again. The only recommendation I can give to management is to demolish and rebuild. This place was gross. It's a block off the main road and welcoming with a well kept garden out front. The manager at reception was very welcoming and gave us a great recommendation for dinner. You park directly in front of your room which was very convenient. Upon entering our room ... We simultaneously said "Charming!" Clearly they've invested in updating the rooms, the decor is quaint and comes with a fridge and coffee pot, as well as, free wifi. It was super comfy, quiet, and affordable. We will absolutely stop here the next time we visit Bishop/Big Pine/Ancient Bristlecone Forest! PS. We accidentally left our pillows (I always sleep with extra!) and when I called two days later the woman manager was an absolute sweetheart to hunt for them, find them, and kindly keep them until we could retrieve them... Floors are dirty, tub has residue, the shower curtain is d dirty , the toilet doesn't flush, the bed is lopsided and there's a frog in the room. I would like to give the place more stars and honestly the stay was pleasant but they didn't clean the place very well at all. We stayed in a two bedroom cottage which was cute and roomy. Great shower even though small, great wifi too. We walked to eat a block away on Main Street and even got to walk to see a movie at the cute theater on Main. But after inspecting the room I found it was quite filthy. We had to wear shoes 24/7 otherwise your feet would be black. There were layers of dust, crumbs, and dirt. See pictures. Vintage motor court motel nicely updated with new fixtures and furnishings. Clean, fresh, spacious feel...room felt bigger than it actually was. Down comforter/silky smooth sheets. Fridge, microwave, and coffee maker with coffee, tea, sweeteners/creamer. Walls a little thin, typical for the age of the building. Nothing they can do about that! They spaced guests out to minimize noise transfer. We slept quite soundly. Our cell carrier was a little weak but using their free wifi instead fixed that issue. read more

Never Stay Here!!! Shoddy business practice of not returning money when cancelling reservation within 1 hr. I made a reservation on 06/04/18 for a 2 night stay for 06/22-06/23 at the motel over the phone. During the phone call, I gave my credit card info, but cancelled the reservation before the call ended. The person I spoke with was confusing and not clear with the amenities, so I cancelled. I did not stay at this motel. I received my credit card statement and I was charged for the 2 night stay. I have called repeatedly, even speaking to the owner. The first few people I spoke to had no record of my reservation. THE OWNER REFUSES TO REFUND MY FEE WHEN I CLEARLY CANCELLED THE RESERVATION. read more

Booked our room through hotels.com. The room we booked was double booked so she accommodated us to a new room. We showed up about 20 mins later and stood in the lobby & waited about 15 minutes until she finally came. She was very nice, however, it was unprofessional. I did however notice she seemed to be be doing everything on her own. Whoever manages this place should realize they need a maid separate from a front desk clerk. Not just to make it more professional for everyone but to overall make sure every area of the hotel is being properly dealt with. The room was not clean at all. I mean not like somone stayed there, but just overall dirty. Not swept, mopped, or dusted. Walking on the floor turned my feet black and from a look it didn't seem that dirty. I woke up itchy and turned the light on to find over 20 bites on my hands up to my shoulders. Not sure if its from mosquitoes (which should be outside not in) or bed bugs. All i know is we will never be back and now I've had to take off work because I'm having such a severe reaction to the bites I've lost out on money from work. read more

The El Rancho Motel was very basic, the room is well done, the wi-fi worked great. The bed and pillows were soft and firm. The air condition worked well and parking is right outside your door. There are however two things you need to know, no phone in room and bathroom issue. The bathroom was well very small, total space was 3ft by 2ft which include the shower. Shower was worst part so small the water would only hit my head as the nozzle is fixed. My recommendation to the El Rancho is install a shower head that points strait down in the center of the shower. Or remodel the bathroom. Other than that I very much enjoyed my stay as the staff was friendly and very helpful. read more

We stayed here two years ago and were pleasantly surprised on how nice it and comfortable it was. We recommended it to everyone we knew. But, the year is a total different story. Issues with check in, people hanging around, and not feeling safe. I'm not sure if some of the staff lives in the hotel, but there were a lot of hang around drifter type gathering at one or two rooms with staff smoking cigarettes and giving dirty looks. They would just sit there and watch you unload your car and smoke would blow in to your room. It felt like they were sizing you up to see what you had and steal your stuff. Last minute decision to stay the night in Bishop on a motorcycle trip. I was very impressed with the check in process, very quick and efficient. When I called about a slow drain in the shower they immediately came and cleared it up. Highly recommended for a guys trip. It is a bit raw for the wife and would probably not want to include it on our road trip list but for a guys stop over I can highly recommend it. It is a block off the main drag so very quiet but easy walking distance to all the restaurants shops and more importantly on a motorcycle ride, a laundromat. read more

Stayed over one night last year for fishing trip. Really enjoyed the small town feel of the motel and owners were really nice. They are also pet friendly which is even cooler. Arrived and was a bit skeptical from the outside of the property. It was small, lots of parking slightly tight spaces in between cars. If the motel is full, the car can be awfully difficult to back out if you have a larger vehicle. The rooms are actually very quaint, updated and very clean. We had problems with the vending machines, but the owner was kind enough to give us a soda since the machines were inoperable. We plan on staying here again this year when fishing season opens. read more

I was looking for a last minute affordable place to stay in Bishop after a long drive. The location might put off some people, it's off the main drag, but it's still just a short walk to shops and cafes in town, and real close to a bakery. For a cheap motel, I was not expecting it to be super clean, but it was much better than most chain motels I've stayed at lately. The bedding was pretty good, a nice heavy comforter and not the run-of-the-mill duvet set you see at places. The lady at the front desk was helpful. The shower in my room was small, but the shower head was nice and in working order, and the water drained properly, which I don't think I've ever experienced at a motel at this price point. On a motor trip to Lake Tahoe, we stayed overnight at the El Rancho Motel. The manager was very friendly and got us into our room early. The room was small, nice decorations, and the bed was adequate. The outside is Early Rundown with a somewhat rusty motel sign in a quiet neighborhood off the main street. Most of the occupants seemed to be bikers but weren't scary or threatening or even noisy for the most part. It was close enough to the main street for walking to restaurants. Price was standard for Bishop area. Free WiFi. Now the bad stuff. The bathroom door hinges were rusty so the door wouldn't close all the way. The shower was tiny with a shower curtain torn or ripped across the bottom and obviously used as something else in its checkered past. Behind the motel was some kind of electrical industrial complex that specialized in very bright lights at night. The worst was the linoleum floor. I had white socks on and very soon they were black socks. The floor was filthy and needed a genuine major cleaning. We were very glad to leave early the next day. I would not ever stay here again. If your budget is cheap and you aren't too particular feel free to stay. It was booked up solid for the weekend. But you know, all considerations of old timey feel or fond memories of dumpy motels from your past won't make this place worth your time and especially your money. read more

So glad we stayed here! Hubs and I wanted to take a random get away so I booked a kitchenette room for Saturday night. After a day of exploring Convict Lake further up the 395 we came back down to check in around 3:30pm. We were greeted by a very friendly gal who just made us feel very comfortable. I had brought chicken to grill and she made sure there was a bbq available and took out some grilling tools to use. The main house keeper, Melissa, was beyond awesome. Very accommodating, went out of her way to ensure our room (#3) was comfortable and had plenty of coffee. She helped suggest the new brewery across the Main Street and suggested to go to the Keough's Hot Springs down the road, which was perfect for hubs and I to relax in after dinner. Awesome staff, comfortable and clean room, perfect location to get to everything, great price for this little gem. I will definitely be staying here again! read more

There's new management and they are trying to turn things around! I'm a climber and come to bishop 2-3 times a month during the climbing season and always stay at the El Rancho! They new staff is so much friendlier and helpful then the old management. We also recently hosted a huge climbing event in Bishop with 50 queer climbers who all stayed at the El Rancho. They were super cooperative and helpful in getting what we needed! They are even re-modeling all the rooms and we got to stay in one of the new ones, it's a huge improvement and looks awesome! Kitchenettes come with basic dishes so all you have to do is bring some food and cook up a great meal for yourself. No complaints with the awesome new management! read more
