This review has been on my draft list since last year. I really didn't want to come here again because my first food experience here was very bland. Came here on cinco de mayo with a coworker of mine. All other Mexican restaurants within the vicinity had a line, so we resorted to this one. Big mistake. We did enter quickly. There was a 15m wait. The couple behind us were seated, had their drinks and appetizers before we did. After waiting 30m, we noticed that they had finished their appetizers, and their main dishes had arrived. I kindly spoke to the waitress and let her know that we ordered our food. The manager came over with 2 house tequila shots. Cool, but we were hungry and haven't eaten since lunch at work. I wound up not enjoying the food at all. My friend didn't enjoy his either, and we just regretted wasting our time. They should definitely have more staff especially on a busy day like cinco de mayo. They got specials. I needed something quick and saw this place. It's a large restaurant with plenty of staffing. The menu is impressive. And by impressive I mean big. I was really happy with the large selection of lunch specials. I got the #13, the fajita burrito with the cheese sauce on the side. It was ok. I got the cheese sauce on the side so it wouldn't make the tortilla soggy. The burrito was a tad salty. Nothing too bad but I know if I added the cheese sauce. It would be bad. The Spanish rice was. The chips were fine and I did like the salsa. Overall three stars. I will try this place again, I just won't get the lunch special. I recently had lunch at El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant located on Military Highway at JANAF Shopping Center in the heart of Norfolk. It's been a while since I've been here and now I'm wondering why it's been so long? The staff is friendly and helpful with menu questions and suggestions. I'm a fan of their burritos, especially the beef and bean special with lettuce, tomato and sour cream on top. This is a combination that is served with Mexican Rice and refried beans. It comes out quickly and it's piping hot, especially the plate so please be careful. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Hampton Roads. The service and food is great. The guacamole dip is fresh and always tastes great. I usually get lunch specials and really like their burrito, enchilada, and beans. The sweet tea is also really good. It's a restaurant located not too far from our house so whether we dine or order takeout, they have been super quick, great with service, and are generous with their portions! I typically order some variation of their combination dinners. Last time we ordered takeout, my husband and I ordered some guac (came with salsa, white sauce, and chips), chicken tamales, chimichangas, and a combo dinner that had a hard beef taco, enchilada, and Tostado. Everything was so good - came out fresh and quick! Their refried beans are one of my favorites here and the quality of the rice is always spot on. 10/10 amazing food. Super juicy and marinated chicken and they use a lot of it! I wanted something lighter so I got a dinner combo for $9.99 and the tacos were loaded, amazing cheese to chicken to lettuce ratio. Beans and rice were hot and fresh and flavorful. Queso was spicy and warm. My Girlfriend who is a bit picky with onions and peppers requested a quesadilla without either and they nailed it! Our server was very professional and well spoken, and our food came out very quickly. Our first impression when walking in and sitting down is that the restaurant is very clean with good lighting, and that was the case as our seating area was spotless. Very pleasant dining experience after dealing with the lack of service at Olive Garden next door. We we promptly greeted, led to a table, served chips and salsa, and drink ordered taken in less than 5 minutes. Every person we came in contact with was smiling and said hello. Our server was impeccable. We both had the shrimp burrito lunch special. The food and dish were extremely hot but the food was so fresh and flavorful. I rarely stray from my staple Mexican haunts in each CoVA town, suspect of other places (the chips/salsa are an influencing factor); alas, a central spot was needed bc of remote working...Yelp to the rescue. Plenty of parking outside, lots of space inside for SAFE physical distancing; closest table to us was over 10 feet away. Delicious complimentary chips/salsa/white sauce, dynamite queso sauce, fast/friendly service (all wore masks), extensive food (Tex Mex) and bev menus with prices on par for portions. Chicken Fajita quesadilla lunch w rice: 5/5 stars, $9. Tender protein, grilled w veggies, covered in warm cheese; rice was light and fluffy. Chimichanga entrees: 4.5 stars, $11.49 ea x3. Not my go to but ALL who ordered were delighted, noting the flavorful sauce that wasn't too spicy. Arroz con pollos: 5/5 stars, $12.99. You'd think it's hard to wreck chicken, rice, and cheese sauce but I've seen it done. But definitely not here. Again, the queso is the hero; when good, queso is like love...it covers a multitude of sin! Fajita nachos: 5/5 stars, $14.99. I tend to not get stoked by meat, cheese, and chips, but this was impressive. Queso just sent it over the top great. Grand total, including 2 large queso bowls (5/5 stars, $7.99 ea) and 2-3 rounds of adult bevs for all, came to $140+ tip; muchos buenos deal for the food quality and reasons listed. Ingredients tasted fresh, definitely cooked to order like the normal choice spots I frequent (Azteca in Va Beach and Norfolk). Not gonna lie, margarita on rocks hit the one and done spot. We ordered the fajita nachos, Shrimp Chimichangas & plentyyy of tequila-Served in mini wine glasses which was cute. LOL We also got some much needed entertainment, The waiter came over and played his guitar for me, sung and did a few magic tricks. Not a terrible amount of check ins, and refills suffered by association. I had gotten fajitas without the meat trying to get extra veggies instead. Came out somewhat lacking in a few departments. One, mushrooms were still pretty little. They increased the amount of onions probably for cost saving. And they forgot the bell peppers entirely. Worked decently once I actually got everything. Friends weren't too impressed by everything either. I'd probably explore other options in the area before considering coming back again. Despite living in Norfolk since 2004, I had never eaten here and decided to stop in on Tuesday the 12th. I was met at the door by a young lady named Ashley who was very friendly and kind and was seated immediately. I ordered the Parrallida Fajita meal which for $16.99 was a great value in terms of the quality and the quantity of food that you are given. The three meats were very tasty and the food was brought to the table hot in temperature. When I asked if they had any habanero sauce, Ashley brought me 4 different types of homemade sauces which were awesome. She mentioned to me about her family having another location in Windsor, which based on my excellent experience here in Norfolk , I actually stopped at and ate the same meal to compare. Her brother Andy was running the restaurant that day and he is a very friendly and personable individual. I was treated like a king during my visit there. Johnny my waiter was excellent. My demands on Mexican food are three: Authentic taste, plentiful serving, affordable price. This restaurant hits all three! So much so I'm mad that I've driven passed it for years and never bothered to test it out until recently. I was taken here for lunch after delivering a talk nearby and I'm glad they chose this place because the food is delicious, the restaurant is clean and the service was adequate and fast. We walked in with a party of six and were seated quickly on a Sunday afternoon and attended to by the wait staff quickly. Parking is plentiful and the location makes it easy to find with landmarks locals will know all around. FOOD: I had a meal that came with two combination burritos stuffed with tender flavorful steak, juicy shrimp and all the typical burrito stuffing topped with a delicious white sauce of some sort and served with rice. It was fantastic and very affordable. So good i wanted to order another plate but i was being treated and didn't want to take advantage. And the prices were great; between my wife and myself (if i were paying) we may have spent $30 which is on par with our go to Mexican restaurant in the area. We stopped by here on our way to the airport. The outside doesn't look real inviting because it is located in what I believe to be an old McDonald's maybe? So it looks a little shady but as soon as we walked in we were politely greeted and taken to our seat right away. To be lunchtime on a Tuesday it was packed! They had a constant flow of traffic. The lunch menu had decent prices and a nice selection. My only complaint is that my quesadilla was super greasy and all I could taste was grease. Don't pay attention to Heather G's review. There is a review on here with a picture of a waitress and they are complaining about the service and a broken drink...well we were there the same night and that review/complaint is ridiculous. She raised her voice and raised hell for no reason. She's still yelling now arguing about how many drinks she had. The cops came and took her away. Her review is garbage. She was in the wrong. This place is awesome. The service and food is great we've been coming here for years and years and know the amazing people here. The food is always on point as well as the service. Stopped here for lunch after a day of shopping. We started with margaritas and the queso fondito. I think the cheese dip was the best part of our meal. I had a cheese quesadilla, beef enchilada and a chalupa - all subpar. My husband had the burritos deluxe, and it tasted like they used Ragu pasta sauce on top.
