    Kanpachi tostada

I was in the area and in the mood for Mexican, did a quick google search and this restaurant popped up. Amazing gourmet seafood (think Holbox) with some traditional Mexican options. It's a place you would find in trendy West Hollywood, DTLA, Highland Park. Restaurant is clean, food was wonderfully presented. I can't wait to return and try the sushi rolls and ceviche.

Very mixed experience here. Killer reviews got me and my workmate to drop in at noon today. Place was completely empty. That didn't really bother me because of the high ratings. I think it was the owner serving us. The place is decorated in a Japanese theme and they have a very eclectic Japanese/Mexican mix. Kind of fancy inside with full waiter service. We started with a soft drink and they were completely flat. We traded them in for some water. My buddy ordered 2 fish tacos and they looked tasty but kind of small for $7 each. He enjoyed them. I had a mixed seafood ceviche which was excellent but also a rather small portion for $20. This is a nice place in a really tough neighborhood. I hope they make it.

First, we were pleasantly surprised how clean and nice the restaurant is. The dishes we ordered were delicious. 1. Brussel sprouts: Very good, especially with that tangy sauce (i think it's balsamic vinegar). 2. Fried calamari: Yummy, definitely liked the sauce that came with it. 3. Calamari sushi roll: Tasted good 4. Enchiladas: It was chicken enchilada, came with soanish rice and beans. My brother loved it. 5. Baked mussels: Loved it. It cane out hot, and it had lots of onions and yummy sauce. Overall, this is a very good restaurant to try Mexian Japanese fusion dishes.

Awesome new fusion restaurant in the LA area. They've only been open for 2 months apparently. Foot traffic seemed slightly less when we went there, but I have a feeling it'll get busier once people start finding out about the place. Food kinda gives me Holbox vibes. Most of the food was a hit but there were also 1-2 that were just okay. We ordered what seemed like too much food but somehow finished most of it... Guac & chips: tastes fresh, similar to chipotles style Kanpachi Tostada $17.5 :THE CRUNCHIEST tostada...had that puffed rice vibe. Perfectly tarte for me and fish was fresh. Would come back just for this. Pricing is a tad steep for the portion though. Peruvian scallops $20: Beautiful presentation. Very fresh scallops. Flavor was a tad strong and overpowered the fresh sweet taste of the scallops but nevertheless it was delicious still. Lobster roll $20: Was meh about this one. Presentation was lovely but it just didn't blow me away. Enchiladas suizas: Liked the sauce and everything but felt it was kinda plain. Think there was only chicken inside? Service was great. I'm guessing our server was the owner because he was super friendly and gave good vibes. I hope this business will do well~Oh and parking is on the street~plenty to go around.

Love this place! They have the best sushi in town. Definitely deserves all the recognition. The inside is cool it has some Japanese decor. He plays great music. Not too loud so you can hear your friends talking. Miguel is super attentive. You must try! I had the hand rolls and the hamachi roll and they're 10/10!

Food was great, sushi and ceviche was fresh and so good. Service was excellent - owner /chef Miguel was attentive and kind. The place was clean, open and welcoming. Cool art around :) hidden gem in East LA.

mexican/japanese cuisine Amazing service. Owner so kind and tentative. food was delicious. everything was amazing. will be back to try other items in the menu. recommend restaurant

Amazing food and service! I cant wait to come back and try everything else on the menu. I want to highlight the brussel sprouts appetizer and the octopus tostada! Ive never had brussel sprouts like this before. The octopus as cooked to perfection and elegantly arranged on a puffy-like tostada with a guajillo type of sauce. I wish it was bigger and it never ended. My husband's pozole bowl cured his pozole snobbiness. And my picky eaters devoured fish tacos. El Sol de Mexico is a hidden gem!

Everything was just ok. Everything felt like it was missing something to make it memorable. With the quality of the food and the flavor profiles, I probably wouldn't make the trip back. -Tostada de Shrimp: The paper menu said this was sweet shrimp. It was just normal shrimp and pretty cooked. Also ordered it because the menu said it came with some ikura, didn't see any of that. The flavor was ok, wish it was a tad spicier or something with a bit more punch. I enjoyed the puffed rice cracker it came on though. -Japanese Scallops: This was very pretty but lacked flavor. The sauce it came swimming in was tasty but weird to need to flip the scallop (and all its toppings) over to sauce the other side. -Ceviche de Hamachi: The sauce was tasty in this. My friend said the sauce would've paired better with the roll we ordered. -A maki roll with fried corn on the outside: Forgot the name of this roll but it was interesting. I loved that there were fried corn kernels on the outside but the eel sauce didn't bring anything to the table. My friend would've liked the ceviche sauce to be with it and I would've liked a creamy sauce with it. Maybe even an elote styled sauce! -Branzino Empanizado: I liked the pieces of fried fish, the sauce was just ok. It described a Szechwan sauce, which made me expect spicy, but it had no heat. This dish might benefit from some blanched bok choy on the side with the rice for balance. The waitstaff was nice enough but constantly had to ask for water refills. And so weird to be approached for an order right when my friend got up to use the restroom.

    Excited to try this restaurant

Wow!!! Hidden little gem serving quality Mexican and Asian cuisine. Came in on a Saturday for breakfast. Cozy restaurant with amazing service. Very diverse menu with something for everyone. My child wanted something that wasn't on the menu and the chef was more than happy to help. The food was fresh and well presented. Hard to find authentic crepes and boy they were delicious. Their chilaquiles burrito was great. Perfect blend of sauce and protein. Don't sleep on their pancakes. Both my kids loved them. Met the owner/chef Miguel. Very humble and friendly person. Just an overall great experience. We can't wait to come back for dinner.

So glad we had the chance to eat here. Came on a Friday night and it was not loud or hectic in here. All four us could not stop eating and we were already stuffed. Perfect blend of Mexican food and sushi to satisfy anyone's needs. Definitely coming back and thank you everyone here!

The Brussels sprouts were delicious. Potato taquitos , chicken taquitos Crispy and delicious with plenty of avocado and salsa . The chicken mole was a treat smelling and tasting amazing. Don't forget to take a picture by the "Cinco Puntos" sign on the wall and the well-known tree nearby! The food was edible, I ordered a carnitas taco with chicharrón. The meat itself was flavorful, chicharron nice and crunchy and I liked that you get to choose your own toppings. The tortillas are handmade, which many people will appreciate, although they were a little thicker than I personally prefer. If you enjoy authentic, handmade tortillas, this place may be more your style. The service was the highlight of our visit. Everyone was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and kind. It was an extremely hot day, and one of the ladies even gave my daughter a small bag of ice to play with and cool off, which was such a thoughtful gesture. Thank you for going the extra mile. There is a small parking lot, and we were able to find street parking right in front near the outdoor tables. The outside seating area was perfectly fine for enjoying our meal. The biggest downside for me was the cleanliness inside the restaurant. While nothing prevented us from eating there, I felt the interior could really benefit from a deep cleaning. Overall, I'm glad we visited and experienced such a well-known East L.A. landmark. While I probably wouldn't return because it wasn't quite my personal preference, I can still recommend it to anyone looking for authentic carnitas, handmade tortillas, and a piece of East Los Angeles history.

The people who work there are so friendly and kind, and the food is amazing. I still remember the crema de chicharron soup that I had the first time we went, and the chile en nogada and enchiladas tres moles are so delicious--they're my family's favorites, but you really can't go wrong. It's so hard to describe what makes them so wonderful; you taste so many different ingredients and yet the flavors balance so perfectly. Whatever the soup of the day is, you should get it; they're all delicious, especially the crema de chile poblano. My wife and I don't live close by, so we can only make it out here every few months. But for years, it's been our place to come for date nights or special occasions--birthdays, anniversaries--and you only have to look around the restaurant to know that it's the same for many other families, too. It's a beautiful and welcoming place to come, with so much art and often live music; it just feels full of life on a busy dinner shift. During the pandemic, we were still coming here when nobody was eating indoors; we'd drive an hour to Bell, pick up our take-out, and eat in the car. And in the middle of all the grief and uncertainty of that time, it was still such a treat. More than a treat; something joyful and soulful in such a hard time. We went to La Casita last night for our anniversary, and we saw Chef Jaime chatting in the parking lot with a friend (who turned out to be an artist working on murals for the restaurant). We recognized him and said a quick hi, and we were going to keep walking, because we didn't expect that he'd know us. But he recognized us, even though it's been a while, and he was so warm and welcoming. He even called the restaurant to order us a glass of wine on the house for our anniversary. We were really touched. And, as always, we had a delicious dinner and fabulous time. If you've never been, I hope you give La Casita a try. We love it so much, and I think you will, too. P.S. Get the jamaica margarita.
