La Azteca's pride & joy is their Burrito de Chile Relleno; Cucumber Mint Agua Fresca
    Gary I.

Tortillería La Azteca is in the same neighborhood as my favorite Mexican establishments, Panadería La Fama, Raspado Zacatecas, La Fortaleza Totopos & Tortillería. It's a total dive in a way that it promises good eating. La Azteca's pride & joy is their Burrito de Chile Relleno with a choice of various meats. I chose my favorite Mexican Carne in the form of al Pastor which traditionally is roasted on a rotating vertical spit called a Trompo, splattered with a complex vinegar, red chile salsa that is sweet & sour infused with pineapple which has an enzyme which tenderizes the meat. Supposedly this type of barbecuing technique was brought to Mèxico by Lebanese Middle Eastern immigrants. The Tortilla de Trigo/wheat seems to be whole wheat and not bleached unnaturally white. The texture is rough, taut, pleasantly leathery, stretchy, that makes the mouth feel of this Burrito particularly note worthy. The Chile Relleno is mild, dark green Pasilla Chile that has a green bell pepper flavour stuffed with a stringy, sweet Queso Oaxaca that is a cousin to Italian Mozzarella. However, this Chile Relleno doesn't have the typical egg wash & flour fried fluffy coating. The excellent al Pastor becomes the luxurious filler, lightly red dyed chunks of moist pork flavoured by what was previously described with slices of pickled red onion to provide a subtle gastrique & allium earthiness. The Salsa Roja suggested by the cashier is very rustic. It seems fermented for a while giving off what may be fantastically weeks old funk. It must have tons of probiotics for good gut health. Possibly made with tomato, red chiles, Chipotle/smoked chile with Epazote that gives off a bitter, musky, green medicinal herbal aroma. Unusual Salsa that seems to hark back to pre-Colombian times. Washed down with a refreshing Cucumber Mint Agua Fresca that cleared the palate for more of the Burrito de Chile Relleno. La Azteca is the only place I know that has Chile Relleno as the centerpiece. Genius move. Also, it's a deal since it can be dinner for most people because it is so filling. 4+ stars PS Caters to early birds, but closed by around 3:30pm.

I stopped by on an early Saturday morning (around 6:45 AM) because I had heard that these were the best breakfast burritos in the area. There's no dedicated parking lot so you need to park on the street or chance it in the parking lot near the bakery a couple doors down. Approaching the restaurant, there were several people crowding around the entrance and inside there were probably 6-8 people already waiting for their order. It's a small spot with standing room only and a few places that you can eat your food. I put in my order for a carne asada burrito and the person taking my order was really friendly and nice. The people in the back looked really busy and were focused on their own stations. I did wait for almost 15 minutes for my one burrito which was a little surprising. The sign at the front says that they don't necessarily hand out food by the order they received them but by how much you order and how long the food chosen takes to cook. When I did get my food, I took it to my car since there was nowhere else I could eat it. It was a good burrito. There was a lot of meat and it was cooked well. And everything inside tasted well together. I wished my tortilla was a little crispier because it was so soft that it started breaking towards the bottom when I began biting. All the moisture from the heat and the tomatoes/eggs also made the tortilla super soggy at the bottom. Other than that, it was good. It was pretty reasonable for the price, so I'd probably come back and try something else.

No line, but no seats. We put our order in to go and just as we picked it seating opened up. Loved the burritos. Definitely a new place!

I've been to La Azteca a few times. The burritos are good, yet a bit overpriced. It's strange how tight they are with the salsa. They give you one salsa with your burrito and it isn't even enough. They charge for any additional salsas. CHILE RELLENO BURRITO The balance is great with the flavors and ingredients. The tortilla is good too. The asada flavor is good but the meat quality can definitely be improved. RESTAURANT This spot is small. There are a few counter tops that you can eat at. SERVICE Good. Order at the counter and wait for your order. PARKING Limited street parking.

Customer service off the bat was 100% there. Greeted me the second I stepped foot inside the restaurant. The guy taking my order behind the counter had an excellent attitude for a morning morning. I ordered the Al Pastor Burrito and it actually came with slices of pineapples packed inside the burrito with sweet tasting onions. I would describe it as an Al Pastor Street Taco in the shape of a burrito. The weight of the burrito felt hefty and the length of it was worth the entire charge. My first time coming to this location was not successful due to the heavy traffic within the parking area. I just can't deal with cramped parking and then having to wait longer for my food than if i came in on another time where I didnt have to deal with either of those two issues. Safe to say, my second time coming to this location was a success. Love my Al Pastor Burrito. Definitely will be coming back here again.

This little joint was Highly recommended by Espanic friends, and here I am! It's mainly a to-go spot, few seatings attached aside around the wall. It's fast food but the price is not! And I realized when looking on my receipt: they charge $1 for credit card payment...I wish the cashier could hv mentioned it to me Burrito w/ Chili Renello n Asada: 4-star OMG, it's humongous! Diced Asada is kinda chewy less of flavor...(1-star down for this reason) chili relleno is big but lack of spiciness which tasted more like bell pepper. Overall burrito is juicy tasty pairing well w/the complimentary chili sauce. The winner is their home made tortilla-soft fresh fragrantly holding up all of the ingredients n juicy flavors. The BEST tortilla ever!

Takes credit card. Add $1 for credit card transactions. La Azteca burrito ($14.25)- the most famous item they have. Add any meat they offer. Tortilla is nice and chewy, you can tell it's home made. The chille relleano with cheese is a poblano pepper makes this so unique. The pepper adds a nice chewiness. Unfortunately my pepper was a little undercooked and hard to bite through, I'd prefer it cooked more. Chicharroon- it's a great idea, and adds e texture to each bite but the chicharroon was too hard kind of like it was overcooked. Next time I'd get the carnitas meat. Breakfast burrito ($12.50)- asada meat. The meat was so tasty, cooked well, still soft. Tortilla grilled. This was way better than the. la Azteca burrito. This alone is worth the 5 stat rating. Prices have gone up probably because cost of eggs went up. Overall prices are pretty steep for what they offer.

I've come here three times during different times of the day and ordered up front. The biggest tip I can give someone is to always order ahead of time because it takes a while to make the order. Granted they do have a sign that lets customers know that orders are not served on a first come, first serve basis. That being said, waiting around 15 minutes minutes for one burrito can really make it, as good as it is, not worth it. Parking can be a hassle and it can get a bit tight inside the restaurant itself during rush hour as well. That being said, the Chile Relleno burrito was out of this world. Having the poblano pepper inside the tortilla added levels of texture, something I've not experienced myself with other burritos. No wonder the restaurant's walls are adorned with reviews praising the place like Hudson "Doc" Hornet's collection of the Daily Exhaust articles covering his multiple Piston Cup championships. It's well deserved. It's a restaurant I definitely want to come back to, though I'll probably order ahead of time.

Yes this place is worth it. Despite the hype, yes this place is the bomb-bay! Yes parking lot sucks big assssss Street parking even worse! I recently went on a late Saturday morning & it was packed as hell. The last time I had been here was maybe 5 years ago on a weekday late afternoon & it was kind of empty. I ordered a chile relleno burrito & they gave me an electronic thingy that would vibrate when my food was ready, like Olive Garden. I drove to a nearby liquor store & chilled in my car prob 15 min. Orders aren't fast in other words. So I eat it at home, it withstood the travel & the time. The tortilla they used is greasy & pliable yet firm It's a small Size in my opinion. Like if you ordered a 6 inch at Subway , you know you're scarfing it down. So this burrito I finished it & didn't feel like a pig after. The hot sauce they give as an accompaniment had tons of flavor, not a lot of heat technically but a lot of flavor. All in all the burrito was very, very delicious & I will still return & recommend but if you're starving or hoping that you can make this into two meals, it ain't gonna happen! I forgot the price, but I remember not feeling shocked when I tapped my card

I work in healthcare. On occasion, I meet with medical staff at other hospitals and bring lunch while we meet or plan or discuss our mutual goals and lines of service. For this particular luncheon, the nurses had asked for La Azteca. Having spent years in ELA and my wife growing up here, I was actually embarrassed I never heard of this place. The framed reviews lining one wall spoke volumes of what this place is known for: the chile relleno burrito or simply, the La Azteca burrito. Don't get me wrong, they have other offerings, including a fresh nopales (cactus) salad and breakfast faire, but the go to was the chile relleno. The flour tortillas were made by hand as the sign so proudly read, "hecho a mano." There was a vibe of home made authenticity that made sense given these tortillas were part of the experience. Parking is non-existent and the restaurant, itself, is more of a waiting area. Sure, there are a few tables and one long counter, but most people, including myself, got my order to go (para llevar). The sign by the counter warned customers that orders came out as they're prepared, not in the order it was placed, meaning a guy can come in 5 minutes after me and only want nopales and walk out in 30 seconds while I might wait for 15. We were smart enough to order ahead and our order was waiting for us. We were at the counter for about 2 minutes and had a bag, a very HEAVY bag, handed to us. But after smelling the burritos and seeing how there were made, we ordered two additional La Azteca burritos for us (we only ordered for the nurses). That one, small addition added almost 20 minutes to our wait (read the sign, brother...). We finally got our orders, complete with 2 bottles of Mexican Coca Cola, and we lugged our order the 1/4 block to our car. I say lugged because our entire order had to have been close to 8 or 9 pounds. Each burrito easily came in over a pound or more like a pound and a half. The first bite was met with cheesy goodness. The tortilla wasn't overpowering, meaning the first bite wasn't all tortilla. It was skillfully wrapped so that every bite had tortilla and cheese or chile or beans. It was simply delicious. It's size belied its heft. It was a girthy burrito that made use of every square inch of the wrapped tortilla. While not exactly a two handed affair, it was weighty. The salsa roja that came with it, was a perfect spice compliment to give just the right amount of heat. If you look at the pics, you can see how it compares to a fork and an iPhone 14 case. You can also see the first bite of cheese. The last bite, like the first, was similarly cheesy with just the right amount of tortilla. No matter which way your turned the burrito or which end you bit first, the first bite and the last were exactly the same. There's true artistry with a burrito like that. And a wonderful way to remember a first bite with a lasting one...

The front door to this eatery boasts "Voted Best Burrito in Los Angeles" (sans quotation marks). A bold claim. One that raises many questions ... Voted by whom, exactly? Is the sample size in the poll statistically significant? "Best" in LA City ... or LA County? *Is* it really the best? Is this just hype? Is this claim just puffery? The list goes on. Well, this is just one man's potentially controversial and subjective take, but here it is: in my estimation, this is *not* the best burrito in all of "LA" - I'd *probably* award that prestigious title to Alfredo's in El Monte (inclusion of guacamole - or lack thereof - makes the difference for me - your mileage may vary). But does La Azteca offer a delicious burrito that can stand on its own merits? Absolutely! I thoroughly enjoyed my Chile Relleno with Asada - definitely worth the $13.25. The taste was satisfying, and the portion was filling. The quality of the meat and tortilla were fantastic. Their included green and red salsas were flavorful - oddly, their green salsa appeared to be more spicy than the red salsa (my experience has been the opposite in pretty much every other Mexican eatery I have patronized). Their Cantaloupe Agua Fresca was also incredibly refreshing and delightful - easily worth the modest $3.25 price. If you don't get one with your burrito, you're missing out. The cashier appeared to be experiencing an existential crisis of some sort. That said, he was very polite and appeared to recorded our absurdly complicated and massive group order with satisfactory accuracy. There is no public restroom, and limited interior seating. Parking availability nearby generally seems atrocious - if you ain't walking or ridesharing here, I would file this place under the "2-man food run" category (one person to drop you off and circle around the block until you come out with the food). That said, we got *super* lucky and scored a free curb spot smack dab in front of the eatery. I'm admittedly not a huge fan of them closing so early at 3:30/4:00pm, but ... I guess business is really good, and who could blame the staff/management/owners for wanting the evening to themselves?

    Relleno quesadilla w/asada

Small restaurant with a small amount of seating and even smaller amount of parking, but it's worth it. I'm not a huge fan of quesadillas and usually opt for tacos or burritos, but I had to try the relleno quesadilla. It was by far the best quesadilla I have ever had. It came out hot, cheesy, and they did not skimp on ingredients. The carne asada had no gristle or huge chunks of fat. The quesadilla was surprisingly not swimming in grease. I wasnt sure about raw chopped tomatoes on it, but it offers a nice contrast of texture and some freshness to a usually greasy, heavy meal. Their salsa verde is bright with a kick. Just how I like it. Their red salsa seems more like a smokey Chile de arbol salsa. Its dark, smokey and very spicy. I loved it. (in small amounts) I also got the cucumber lime aguas frescas. It was tart, not too sweet and refreshing. The best part, however, would be the service. They have a sign by the register that says to ask questions if its your first time, and they mean it. All three guys at the counter were extremely personable, helpful and offered quick service with a smile.

So I went to La Azteca last weekend and I was kind of disappointed. I saw the great reviews and even when I walked it they were busy. I ordered the Asada Burrito with Guac and there was a lot of fatty pieces of meat and the whole Burrito feel apart the pico they use just made the thing super watery I felt like I was having a Baja Fresh Burrito instead of something a little more authentic.

Can u order a lunch burrito in the AM? If u cannot, what time does lunch start?

    Yes.

Do you have to stand in line for phone orders?

If there is one, it's the line to the left for pick up. You don't have to stand in the line waiting to order.

How is the menudo? I'm trying to find a place that makes delicious, flavorful, quality menudo.

La azteca does NOT sell menudo. Try Paris bakery around the corner

    Do they take phone orders?

    Yes

    Do they ID?

It's a Mexican restaurant with no dining. You can order your tacos/burritos/quesadilla without showing ID.

Can you make vegetarian breakfast burritos with eggs, beans, cheese, potatoes, and avocado?

    No, the beans have lard

Is it still take out only or do they offer seating at the restaurant now (mid-May 2022)?

I was recently there. There is outside and some inside seating

    Is there asada fries?

    Nope

    Do they have indoor seating?

    Not at the moment (Covid-19)

    Are buñuelos available all year?

To be honest they are always running out of things because they sell so much. I say if you want it go early when they open. Hope that help and I would also call them to make sure they have it before you go?

Anyone know what their vegan options are?

Can make your own burrito just be specific

Do they just sell the tortillas ? How much?

$5 for 1 dozen! They are home made and so delicious - I just warm them up on a griddle and they puff up fluffy and white. I highly recommend

    Do they sell tamales here?

No they don't. But just a block away has a store that sell nothing but tamales and they are amazing

    Why is it closed today?

    Veterans Day

Will they add chicaron inside the chile relleno burrito, if you ask them to?

I think so, because you can add a meat to it

Anyone know what kind of cheese they use in the burritos?

I'm not 100% certain, but it almost certainly tasted and looked like Monterey Jack cheese. It's all white.

    Is it chorizo or longaniza?

    Chorizo

Is there another number I can call because I'm trying to call and it goes straight to voicemail? Please message!

You just have to keep calling. They only have one line and it is usually busy. Happened to me all the time but on occasion I get through.

Is it possible to get the chili relleno burrito with eggs?

    Yes!

Do they sell party size burritos? 3 feet or longer?

no, try El Tepeyac in East LA

The menu is quite simple, but beware that no prices are listed on the main menu, but they are on the paper menus. They accept Apple Pay/credit cards. I ordered the asada burrito and the pollo caramelo and added the grilled poblano (as recommended on Yelp!). The tortillas were the true stars -- soft, nice chew, with a buttery mouth feel (probably lard). The fillings were just ok. The inside reminded me of a Taco Bell 7 layer burrito -- a lot going on but all the flavors kinda blend together. I (incorrectly) thought the beans were refried, but they are not. Whatever is going on inside, I didn't find much structure. The burrito was the best. The caramelo was a lazily folded burrito. I read that it was like a quesadilla, but I couldn't disagree more. I would skip this next time. I spent $25 and it was a lot of food, but I wasn't impressed, especially given the hype and the fact that LA should really be the pinnacle of Mexican food. Not sure if I'll make a second trip here.

Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

Located between Koreatown and Pico-Union, this restaurant delivers an outstanding dining experience from the moment you're seated. My wife and I both ordered the Mole Coloradito with chicken, and it was absolutely delicious. One detail we really appreciated was being able to choose between white meat or dark meat--a thoughtful touch that lets you customize your meal to your preference. The mole was rich, complex, and full of flavor, exactly what you would hope for from a restaurant known for its Oaxacan specialties. As a welcome appetizer, they bring fresh chips and salsa to the table, but what really impressed us was when they replaced the salsa with their incredible mole sauce. It was so good we found ourselves dipping everything into it. Both meals were served with rice that was perfectly cooked with a great consistency and flavor. For those feeling adventurous, give the Chapulines (grasshoppers) a try. They may sound intimidating, but they were surprisingly enjoyable and added to the authentic experience. The staff was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and patient with those of us who are not fluent in Spanish. Their hospitality made us feel comfortable and welcomed throughout our visit. Great food, authentic flavors, and wonderful service make Guelaguetza a restaurant we'll definitely be returning to. Highly recommended!

As soon as you walk up the stairwell you'll be transported into this super cute place with an outdoor-indoor feel, almost like an elegant treehouse. We were seated on the second level which provided a Birds Eye view of the restaurant. We ordered a few items to share: Cameron ceviche, flautas and for our sweet tooth, French toast paired with a mango sorbet surprise with a candle for our birthdays (tip: we drizzled the melted sorbet on our French toast and took small scoops with each bite - game changer!). Everything was so delicious! We also ordered mocktails, a miche-nada for him and a lemony drink for me. This experience wouldn't have been as great without the exceptional service we had. Our waters were always refilled without asking, our tables were cleaned with every dish, honestly top-notch service! Parking can be a bit challenging but drive around a few blocks and you'll find a few spaces. Worth the walk after an incredible meal. Happy eating!

While it is definitely on the pricier side, the flavors are extremely unique and delicious, making it worth the splurge for a special night out. My only real bummer was discovering they took the vegan ceviche off the menu--that was actually the whole reason I came back! I'm sure they have their reasons, but I was pretty disheartened to see it go. Overall, the menu doesn't have a ton of vegan items, but they do have some room for adjustments if you ask. Despite the menu change, the incredible atmosphere and unique menu still make it a must-try.

And I live in Portland, which has really good vegetarian options. First of all, I could eat like 75% or more of the menu as a pescatarian. I was thrilled and so overwhelmed because I normally don't have that many choices! First of all, the water was infused and was delicious. I browsed the menu and had a really hard time deciding, but ended up on the cauliflower rajas taco, the crispy shrimp taco & the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The waiter recommended the crispy shrimp taco, but I actually enjoyed the vegetarian tacos more. I love cauliflower and poblano so that taco was a great starter. So much flavor and a variety of textures. The tortillas were super flavorful too. The potato taquitos came next and I am actually obsessed. The outside was perfectly crispy, the interior was soft, flavorful & cheesy. The sauce complimented it perfectly. I can not recommend them enough. The crispy shrimp taco was really good, but I also tried a crispy fish taco and would honestly get that over the shrimp. I think there was mango or something in the coleslaw of the fish taco because it had a really nice fresh flavor to it. Last, I had the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The mushroom shreds & the flavor were just perfect. Again, as a pescatarian I have really never had Korean BBQ because it's so heavily meat focused. I truly loved this taco. If I hadn't discovered it on my last night in LA, I might've come back on my short trip. The whole place is just a vibe and the food was beyond excellent.

The building is an original piece of the City's history, boasting a menu that features their famous burritos that vary in size from a regular to a huge party size beast that can feed several. I tried the Hollenbeck and the Okie burritos on two separate occasions via pick up, as aforementioned, the service was quick, convenient and the pick up window is seamless, parking is located next to the structure and I haven't had problems getting there. Hollenbeck was good but I definitely enjoyed the Okie burrito more, I ordered the "original" size once and didn't seem to learn my lesson the second time, these burritos can feed two in Original size. They offer a "Mini" version which would be satisfactory for one person. My favorite thing about these burritos is how "home-made" they are, the salsas and meats are fresh and taste like they came out of an abuelitas kitchen. I still need to try the crunchy tacos and nachos which look great, I recommend trying this classic establishment at least once if you're in the area.

The ceviche is bright with lime and the cocteles are lush and briny with a tomatoey kick, and the aguachiles hit with sharp citrus, fresh herbs, and it's a really decent amount of fish.
