Came here with family to have dinner. I had not been here as I don't live in the state, the service was great. The food was good and the portions were big, the staff was friendly and they checked on us a lot to make sure we had everything we needed, the atmosphere was also chill. Best Chips and Salsa in Kitsap County, hands down! A fresh spicy salsa with hot fresh cups goes a long way at a Mexican restaurant. I ordered the Gringo Plater which had chicken taquitos, a stuffed tortilla, and enchiladas. Only costed 15$ and was a really good portion size. The inside of the restaurant has a lot of booths which I appreciate. You get what you expect, prices are within todays inflated prices you get everywhere and the portion sizes are good. We love this place, have been going here for many years. It the very best Mexican restaurant in Kitsap County. The service is usually very good and the food is great. Those Chile Rellanos are amazing and the Carne Asada is very good. Also like those Fijitas, Enchiladas, the list goes on... The salsa is really good and I love those Hornitos margaritas. We are new to dining in the Port Orchard area and were in need of a place for a family meal. We did some yelp searching for Mexican and came across this place. I tend to look at menus in advance so as not to end up at a place without vegetarian options but did not have a chance to in this instance. Apparently this place changed locations 3 years ago, but is near the old location. Large parking lot out front, large dining room inside. I was a little scared to not find anything listed as vegetarian on the menu, as most Mexican places tend to have a vegetarian section on the menu. I did see some rancho beans though which seemed promising. The waiter was able to list off multiple vegetarian items to me when asked and even recommended the veggie burrito. I do think not having things listed on the menu discourages people like me who make their decisions online ahead of time based on menus, but was happy they could accommodate me since I failed to plan ahead. Two members of our party got the Chips and salsa were tasty. We got tons of drink refills. Service was super fast for a Sunday at lunch time. read more

The staff is all very friendly, the food is good, and it's reasonably priced. It's a dream boat of cheese, meat and rice goodness. They've done a recent remodel and it looks nice! Seriously fajita sized tortillas are six for a nickle even if they are buying them (which they almost certainly are). All of this was compounded by slow and inattentive service. We've been to El Sombrero several times and absolutely love it. The servers are friendly, the food is wonderful, and it has a very Mexican ambiance. Probably one of the best meals I've had in the last 10 years was today's chicken carnitas (you read that right), flour tortillas, rice and beans. I cannot describe how satisfying those flavors were. If I could give this establishment no stars I would. I have actually been here once. The food was mediocre at best. What this review is for is the visit my family had this past weekend. There were five in the party. They had ordered dinner and were being served when the waitress dropped a hot plate of food on my Dad's hand and it then flipped and went onto my Mom's lap. Not only did it make a huge mess, it burned their skin. The waitress cleaned up the mess in the area and replaced the food....and knew they were burned because she offered them ice. They had to sit through this meal with soaked clothes with food still on them and burns to their skin. The waitress at first offered them a 15% discount on one entree. After my Aunt spoke up, they then offered to pay for that entree. At no time did the manager of the restaurant come out to see if they were ok or if they needed help or Anything! I called the restaurant afterwards and the manager said he was just busy and didn't think it was that big of a deal! (I honestly think the waitress didn't tell him she spilled food on them, just that she dropped a plate.) Horrendous managerial skills! I will tell everyone I know about this place, their lack of training, the not so great food and how unprofessional they are. read more

This place has some great reviews so I thought I would give it a go. First impressions were good. The decor was a little over the top, but frankly I like that. The booths were large, the place was clean and half full with customers. I even heard Spanish being spoken. We got to our table and chips and salsa were immediately served. The Iced tea tasted fresh and the refills kept coming. I ordered one of my benchmark dishes. This time I was in the mood for Arroz con polo. The wait was not long. The dish arrived and it looked good....and then.... The food had absolutely zero flavor :( I tried adding salsa and salt, but that just made taste like salty salsa. The dish was very bland. Maybe this was just an off night? As I said above I really wanted to like this place. The staff were very nice, but as the food left a flat impression I doubt I will be back. Almost Authentic! This is probably the closest thing to actual Mexican cooking that is available in a sit down restaurant in the area. The service is top notch and the decorations are kind of "Economy TJ". The booths are home made so can be a little uncomfortable if you get one with a broken down pad, but overall the furniture is in good shape. The food is the star. While you get the traditional chips and salsa, make sure to order the bean dip while you are perusing the menu. This is a pretty decent option for Mexican in Port Orchard. I grew up in Arizona and I know this is not particularly authentic...but I do understand that I'm now in the Pacific NW and I don't expect the same level of authenticity as in AZ. The service here has been pretty good. I've eaten once in the bar area and once in the restaurant. I definitely prefer the restaurant side. The bar side was ok, but the group of people was a bit rowdy while watching soccer and not really my scene. The fajitas are pretty good. I prefer the chicken as I think it's a bit more flavorful and I find the beef a bit chewy. I don't usually crave Mexican food; which is to say, when I do, I make it myself. But lately, something about chips and salsa has been making me drool. Since I avoid Mexican chains like the plague (no thank you), I've been looking for a nice little local "hole in the wall", authentic or TexMex. Thanks to the reviewers here on Yelp, we decided El Sombrero was the place to try and we were not disappointed! My other half says you can judge a Mexican place by their tortilla soup. He was very impressed and full by the time we left. I didn't want something way over the top that night, so a tostada salad with shredded beef was on the bill for me -- definitely a good choice. Flan and deep fried ice cream was more than we could handle after dinner, but we triumphed nonetheless (and paid for it later!) The waiter was extra attentive without hovering, the ambiance was mostly tolerable (screaming children behind us and a group of foul-mouthed teenagers nearby wasn't great - but not the restaurant's fault, really), and the cost was comparable to a place like Azteca, but for way better quality. I actually felt like there was care taken with the meals and it wasn't slopped onto the plate to get it out of the kitchen ASAP. Definitely a place we'll return to in the future when I'm not up to the task to make my own Mexican food. read more

Just left here. Really disappointed in the quality of the food for the price. $12.99 per burrito. My husband had the macho burrito and I had the Sombrero burrito. Both were bland and small for how much they cost. Salsa seemed to be just tomato juice with a few onions and too much salt in it and no spice. We asked for pico de gallo, which was more like a bowl of diced onions with a touch of tomato and we were charged $1.99 for it. The waiter made no indication that there was an upcharge for it. I love, love LOVE this place. They are so delicious and my favorite Mexican eatery in Port Orchard and probably in the Kitsap County area. Went in for my 2nd visit a few days ago for lunch and left pretty happy with the overall experience. I really like their salsa and tortilla chips. The chips are always hot and the salsa has a great kick to it with lots of flavor. This time I ordered the Tacos Mexico with chicken. I got 3 tacos that were loaded with fresh cilantro, onions, and chicken. The dish also came with re-fried beans, rice, and a lime wedge. I love their re-fried beans and I'm not a fan of re-fried beans. I had churros for the first time and really enjoyed them. The service was great. Our food came out fast without any mistakes and our server was on top of our refills and brought them out before we actually needed them. Overall my husband and I enjoyed eating here. My husband has been eating here for about 15 years now and said that they're his favorite Mexican spot in Kitsap County. Their prices are reasonable and you get generous portions. Something that is also a plus, the food isn't smothered in cheese! I will definitely be coming back. read more
