We went here early on a Friday night. For years I'd always driven by and wondered what it was like to eat here. Here's a list of what we experienced: 1) The staff was completely dismissive to us. 2) We ordered three things. They got two of them correct. 3) We chose to eat on the patio because inside was ridiculously hot. 4) We were attacked by many flies on the patio because it was super dirty (cigarette butts in the planters, trash on the floor, etc). Based on the above, I will not be returning. I might find forgiveness if the food was exceptional, but it's not. Very sup-par. I can't believe this spot has so many 5-star ratings. The only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is because it's relatively cheap. The bad thing is so is their food. The only two times I've had food from here is when my coworker offered to pay. This is not somewhere I'd go pay to eat put it that way. I've had a burrito de carne asada and a bacon breakfast burrito. (Not at the same time, I'm fat but not fat fat). The first one was bland and flavorless. The latter had gray eggs and one slice of soggy bacon. If you do decide to eat here it's better to call in your order. They take a long time to make your food. Quick recommendation: I haven't had a bad dish, but I would certainly recommend the nachos and chilaquiles. Everything comes in medium-large portions. Now for the nitty-gritty... This is a really solid hole-in-the-wall kind of place with great traditional Mexican restaurant fare. They have an adorable patio area (that makes the most of what view is there, namely a gas station and shopping centers, with the Hollywood Hills barely noticeable behind), and the food is always better than I remember, which isn't bad at all considering that I keep coming back! First things first.. I have been coming here for yearsss in the past but it has actually been awhile since my last visit and let me tell you.. the customer service was always excellent! I was unable to get our cashier's name but she was very friendly, attentive and helpful. She answered all my questions (regarding the ingredients) very well and also explained that *at the moment* their avocados are not ripe yet so they were unable to include guacamole for some dishes, which has actually been happening everywhere!! My husband is super clumsy and accidentally dropped his drink but the girl was nice enough to clean it all up and give us another one :D We got our food which was a Carne Asada Burrito, Chimichangas Plate, Chicken Quesadillas, and French Fries. My husband said his Carne Asada Burrito was dry and didn't have any moisture in it at all. I graded my chimichangas a B- because it also didn't have as much moisture in it at all either and the flavors just didn't mesh well together in my opinion. Maybe I should've stuck to my usual, the enchiladas plate but oh well. My daughter ate a couple pieces of the Chicken Quesadillas but of course, she favored the French Fries more. I decided to give El Tapatio a try after a coworker raved about how awesome it was. Since she is a big fan of their bean and cheese burrito, I decided to give that a try. I agree with some other yelpers that it was rather bland, but at least the prices of this place are decent. It's not common for me to say a food a bland, since I usually find a bunch of foods to be overly salty (darn my taste buds), but the burrito I received was rather bland! My boyfriend tried the chicken enchilada plate, and it wasn't as big as I expected it to be, but for the price we paid, it was expected. He didn't have many complaints, and it was filling, so woot woot? Maybe I will revisit El Tapatio again someday. Maybe. So where in the LA County has the best bean and cheese burrito? The quality of the food varies from visit to visit. Usually it is good but I wish it was consistent. When they nail it, YUM! The service is not so great with the woman at the order taking window but occasionally you get the owner who is really kind and helpful with suggestions. We got rice, beans, quesadillas,5 tacos, gorditas and a fish taco. And horchata and a soda. For all that we paid 25 bucks...not bad for a family of 4. There is outside seating and some inside seating. We decided to sit outside, great vibe! The food: rice and beans were good, the carne asada on the gorditas were cooked just right! (Gorditas had beans inside also) The carnitas were great! Very tender. Okay, i think im gonna be very picky but i was not amazed by the fish taco, i was not impressed by it (but then again im comparing to tacos that i had in Ensenada and Puerto Vallarta), it just lacked flavor. Small restroom(s). Seems awkward, difficult for wheelchair users. Didn't see a "Service Animals Welcome" sign. Inclusion of disabled people would give them the last star. Wish they would improve. 2 Stars just because was edible. No I didn't really expect authentic or even delicious. But I also didn't expect to smell the food on me a day later. How does this food smell so strong? What is that? My husband had a chicken burrito and I had the sopes plate with no meat. As we were eating it we thought it was a 3 at best, but since I can smell the food I ate at 4pm yesterday on me somehow at 7:36pm today, even after I showered, it's a 2 at best! First of all they took 35 minutes to make a burrito and carne asada fries despite there being no line. The food itself wasn't amazing, however, being from San Diego, these carne asada fries are the closest (in terms of flavor not quality) I've had in LA to SD carne asada fries. I moved to the neighborhood recently and have been here a few times, and I have yet to be let down by anything. Burritos the size of your head, the fish is goooooooooooooood. Last night while I was waiting for my order, a homeless vet came by and chatted up the proprietor for a minute. He then straightened up some of the tables and chairs on the patio, at which point the proprietor happily provided a plate of food for the man. This is by far one of my favorite places to eat really good Mexican Food since I moved from East L.A. I used to work a block away, so I was there at least once a week, up until a few months ago. Now I try to go if I'm withing a few miles, just because. Sometimes the service can be a little slow (5-10 min wait), but whenever this happens they've been more than willing to refill my Extra-Large Horchata, Orange Bang or Soda for having to wait. That's something that almost never happens especially the first two. Also, even though the menu doesn't point it out, yo can put any type of meat on the Tortas and Nachos(which are huge, good to share) at no extra charge. I highly recommend choosing the Al Pastor, it's awesome. I even ordered Chicken Al Pastor tacos one day, and they usually only do Al Pastor with Pork like many places. But they're so cool that they made it just for me since it was a slow day and they knew I came in a lot. Ordering off-menu is always something I like. Some reviews here are misleading, as if people are expecting gourmet dining from a walk-up window that sells burritos for 4.50. Then there are others complaining that it isn't Chipotle... wait, that's a bad thing? Chipotle is garbage compared to El Tapatio and/or most burrito stands in this town. In my humble opinion you get more than what you pay for in a good way! The burritos are HUGE! Stuffed with all of the good stuff. The cheese tacos here are off the hook. The vibe is typical taco shop meats burger stand. The food here is definitely super fresh and authentic. Their pickled carrots and jalapenos are AMAZING. If you live nearby then you are lucky because you do not need to go to Chipotle. If I am in the neighbourhood I will eat here. Vegetarian burrito is a full burrito! One time they put pickles in it, which weirded me out, but that turned out to be a fluke and it never happened again. I'm a chip and salsa lover and the chips and salsa here are great! My dad orders chorizo, or tacos something-something, for himself and my mom, and I guess you could say our family loves this place because we have been eating here for years. In fact, there is only ONE restaurant in which I eat the rice, and that place is in Austin, Tx, but I ate every last grain. It was soft, fluffy, and perfectly seasoned. I was more than happy with my meal. My boyfriend ordered the beef chimichanga ($7.50). Rather than ground beef, it was cubed steak. I never order chimichangas, and usually when I see them they look like a huge eggroll, but this one seemed grilled rather than fried. The tortilla was nice and crispy (somewhat greasy, but that was expected). I liked the flavor of the steak - will be ordering something with steak next time. With it being a Monday night and only 5 other guests at one table, our food took longer than expected, but we weren't bothered by it. The men and woman who worked tonight were very nice and attentive with our drinks and chips. It was a very enjoyable experience, and I really enjoyed the food. Definitely will be returning! Went here for a late lunch around 3PM. This place is literally, a hole in the wall. Well, 2 holes. One you order and pay at; one you pick up your order. I ordered an al pastor burrito, no beans, add guacamole and crema. No problem. $5. 46 please. That's a good price. I paid cash, but there was a sign that said visa/mastercard. Not sure if there's a minimum on that. 5 minutes later, my order is up. Nice sized burrito, but not huge. I ate it w/o any difficulty. Good flavor, although not the best pastor i've had. Rice was cooked well and the crema and guac rounded it out well. Chips and salsa were in the bag, too, so that was a nice touch. I would hit this place up again if i were in the area. read more
