My friends and I got food to go. I really liked the ambiance and the service was excellent. The place was clean and there was intentionally in the decor. However, the food was honestly not great. My friend said his rice was undercooked and his steak overcooked. I did not enjoy my food either. My enchiladas lacked flavor and did not taste like Mexican food. I was so hungry and I still failed to finish my meal.

The chips were made in house & the salsa tasted freshly made, as well. It had very good flavor with real ingredients. The Tostada Marian salad was a generous portion of each ingredient, the jalapeño's added a nice kick of spice. I had the shredded pork, protein.(a favorite of the waitress according to her.)

We didn't have great expectations for this restaurant. Being from San Diego and so close to Mexico, I've been spoiled. I was surprised, the food great! Authentic and seasoned well. Service was awesome too! But, who is "El Topo" ???

11/9/18 update: Lousy service. My Caribbean margarita was good. Chips and salsa taste prepackaged. You have to pay $3 for that. I got a salad with chicken in a toasted tortilla. Th tortilla was pretty soft. Not great. SO got a smothered chicken and rice burrito. He enjoyed it and ate every bite. Chips and salsa taste prepackaged. My house margarita was smallish but tasty. My SO's chicken and rice burrito was good but lacked spice. My chicken taco had great flavor. I got a side of rice (not hot, and a little dry) and black beans (utterly smothered in melted cheese

Everything was fresh. This is the best Mexican food I have had and I eat a lot of Mexican food. Highly recommend the margarita and the street tacos. We had barbacoa, lengua, and shrimp. They were all incredible. The service was awesome, the atmosphere was inviting and vibrant, and we even got to hang out with Thomas, the owner, and share some laughs. The experience was wonderful and we just happened to stop by there! Go see them! You will not regret it.

Not sure how that's even possible with a vegetarian taco. Anyway, nothing special here. In response to your comment Thomas. Would you have charged me less if I asked? I don't complain in front of my guests or to get free stuff. I give honest reviews to give other people a heads up and to give owners an opportunity to improve. You used yours to blame me....your choice. I just went back and read the poor reviews for the past couple years. Your answer is always the same. Never an apology never your responsibility, just blaming people for not asking for more, better, hotter....whatever. One person complained to you and after giving then a small discount, you gave them the cold should. Seriously, go back and read the bad reviews and then read your response. Sometimes people just want a sincere apology and for someone to take responsibility. Best of luck figuring it out.

It would normally have grapefruit vodka in it, but I'm not a fan of vodka or any of its flavoring. The kind bartender substituted the alcohol to gin with a splash of grapefruit at no extra charge. I believe the bartender is the owner as it seemed to be a one man show. The same guy was our server, a bus boy, bartender, and our host! He was probably the cook too! Talk about wearing many hats! I ordered the golden and red beets with goat cheese for $12 and this came to the table looking like a colorful masterpiece. Every bite was delicious. The huckleberry creme brûlée was great! The huckleberries are hiding at the bottom of the ramiken. I'm a tourist and was on a mission to eat everything huckleberry and this dessert did not disappoint! It's a must try! My boyfriend ordered the wild mushroom crepe $16 which was roasted wild mushrooms, prosciutto and swiss cheese with mornay sauce. I thought the crepe was a little undercooked, but he absolutely loved it. I also thought it was a bit salty for my taste, but the mushrooms were tasty! I ordered the $16 grilled salmon and andouille sausage over spinach with tomatoes, fresh orange and red onion. I never heard of these two proteins together, but they make a dynamic duo! I'd like to say it's a warm salad and it was so good! The charred salmon was the star of this dish!
