It really sets the mood and tone for the whole evening experience when you walk in and see fresh tortillas being made when you step foot in the door. The chips and salsa is always a fan favorite. I loved both my happy hour mojitos, the blackberry was my favorite I could have had 5 more. So refreshing and tasty. The calamari was fried well and tasted good (not rubbery or over cooked) and I personally loved the pepper jelly sauce but it's an acquired taste. My husband didn't care for it but he doesn't like pepper jelly so it's definitely different from a normal calamari experience. The al pastor tacos were so flavorful and I loved that they put a whole thin slice of pineapple in it so every bite had pineapple. I swear I've been here when I was a kid because I have memories of an El Torito Grill with house made flour tortillas. This place had exactly that. Most people get excited about the chips and salsa, I get excited about the flour tortillas and butter. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner. We've been wanting to come here for a while because of all the great reviews. We got a booth right away, we didn't even have to wait. This place is very spacious and they have lots of big tables that are great for families. Our waiter Adrian was super nice and service was quick. I ordered some ice tea to drink. We got our chips and salsa to start as well as the flour tortillas and butter. With the flour tortillas I spread the sweet butter on them as well as some pico de gallo salsa to add some spice and then I roll it up into a taquito shape to eat. So delicious, warm, house-made flour tortilla. We could literally watch them make the tortillas from our table. The butter melts and is slightly sweet, I wonder if they add some honey or agave to the butter. The pico de gallo adds some savory spice to the mix. I could eat those tortilla creations all day, but I had to leave some room for my entree. For our entrees I got the carnitas and my boyfriend got the carne asada enchiladas and shrimp. My carnitas were super tender. What surprised me the most though was the rice. It was seasoned perfectly and went great with my carnitas. Of course, I also made a little taco out of my flour tortillas. I liked the addition of raw red onions to the carnitas as it gave a strong and refreshing flavor to the dish. My boyfriend's dish looked amazing as well. He gave me a piece of shrimp to try and it was cooked perfectly. It came with a creamy sauce that complimented the shrimp well. Joanna was an incredible server--her hospitality was truly superb. However, having lived in Brea and frequented El Torito Grill for over 30 years, I was shocked to be charged $3.00 for chips. While we received the salsa, being told the chips were extra was deeply disappointing. I always viewed El Torito Grill as a high-end establishment, but charging for every little thing makes it feel cheap. And what is worse when you ask the staff how much longer they seemed to be annoyed . The reason behind was we do not have enough chairs - so shouldn't we pay attention to how many reservations are made. UPDATE - Once I asked the host to get a manager involved in the situation regarding finding the chairs he actually came and spoke to us. Wow! I went to El Torito Grill for lunch and was I surprised! There was a brunch! The food was delicious. Fresh steamed vegetables, Chile Colorado, Chile Verde, fresh salad, taco area with someone making the tacos of beef, carnitas and chicken, a lot of other foods to choose, homemade tortillas and a dessert area. The management was all to happy to accommodate us. Violet, manager, was very cordial. Jose, the bartender helped us decide our drinks. He is such a nice person! Carolina, the Regional Director, was at the site, also. They told me brunch is from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm M-F. Brunch is $19.50. Saturday's brunch is from 9 am to 1:00 pm. $24.00. Just want to say they have the breast champagne brunch in Orange county however, the service is even better and their manager Violet is exceptional have not been here in two years because of Covid the menu had changed and the thing I came here for was the dessert banana fosters put to the heat in the flame, bananas, caramel butter, and ambience. We used to visit this restaurant when they had one in Los Angeles on Wilshire Boulevard. Sadly, that is closed many years ago and this is the only one left. Yes it's a 2 1/2 hour drive on a Friday night to get there, but it's definitely worth the drive. The food is exceptional. The tortillas are freshly made with orange honey butter And the combo plates are the way to go. We had a really nice server. Her name was Cynthia and she was outstanding. Had a birthday brunch with 12 of us today. Our waiter was as great as well as the variety of food. However, the person manning the omelette station was not nice. Five people in our party asked for omelettes. Each time he acted like he was "put out"for having to make them an omelette instead of any kind. Would have given today 5 stars, however, the omelette station needs to be manned by someone who is friendly & attentive to what you ask for in your omelette. After having had a negative experience celebrating my partner's birthday, we had received an invitation to give them a second chance. While this place is quite the distance, we decided to go ahead and drop by. We travel all the way from Torrance just for the whole El Torito Grill experience. The ambiance was still the same, giving the authentic feel of a true Mexican experience. Our server, whose name on the check, "Carbajal," is what made our second visit well worth coming back. He was patient and exhibited stellar customer service in comparison to our previous visit. The service was indeed welcoming and we felt very pleased with our service this time around. I have to emphasize how delicious the Shrimp & Avocado wraps were. I am not sure if this was a new item, but it was delicious! A perfect balance between sweet and savory. If you don't know what to get, always go for their fajitas. (Either one are outstanding, we had Suprema). Because of the amazing service we had experienced today, we will be returning in the future.
