This el Torito has been around for a long time. My office is across the street so I have made this my happy hour go to spot. I make my way to the bar area & usually always have Eduardo serving me. Without asking, he brings me my Cadillac margarita and makes me table-side guacamole. He is always friendly and cracks a few jokes with me and co-workers. I'm most def a regular. The service was a bit slow but the wait staff and management worked together to get my party of 8 fed and that was nice. This place is really big and I heard they have a great weekend brunch that might be worth checking out. The salsa had a roasted flavor which was nice and the hips were served warm. We were there for lunch which had a nice list of things to choose from. They brought my friend a flan and sang happy birthday to him...then charged him for the dessert which was a first. I'll give it five stars for their Sunday buffet alone. A few examples. Chicken fingers are usually a throwaway item for the kids. There are dozens of inedible varieties. But it seems like this place uses the best kind. Tyson. Also, there are plenty of nasty chocolate chip cookies they could have chosen (see Gardena Buffet & Vegas Buffet). But the cookie-pizza thing they have is top notch. But there are some things to improve with the non-buffet meals. Chips don't have much flavor. See Zacatecas or Madre for how good chips can be. Less rice, more beans. I got zero beans on my $14 taco plate and left a little bit hungry. Will try to get beans next time. And the mobile tablet that you pay with is less than fun. Usually Slow service with dozens of open tables they are making everyone wait 20 min for a table to make it look like they're busy. I ordered salmon tacos with my mom and we were eating them and realized towards the end that it was mahi mahi tacos. We called the manager over and he went to the back and said maybe they did the wrong one when he came back. I eat at El Tortito EASILY two times a week between Torrance and Hawthorne. The "salmon" tacos came out and I should have known that there was an issue because they had cheese on them and they never come with cheese. So they are fooling people who do not know better into thinking that they are salmon tacos. I have photos from my dinner the other night and I can clearly see that they are two different types of fish. Terrible one, go to the one in Torrance instead, they actually care about their customers. Also, only on salmon taco was taken off of the menu because we ate them. EDIT: I went back in to vent again and the manager gave me salmon tacos Togo; he was very apologetic and they looked like salmon. I might be back to this one but it'll be awhile. Visited El Torrito today on Labor day. The food was not good this particular visit. Usually, the food is fresh and hot. Today it was warm and tasteless. The guacamole was old and brown. Not made fresh at out table. The chicken tenders were like rocks. What happened?? read more

I really wanted to give them a chance even though they're in the hood. But unfortunately they didn't come through. So first of all when I called I had been put on hold for a while, and then I just wanted to order a simple chicken tortilla soup. They couldn't even get that right and I had to keep repeating my order. So of course they charged me for the soup that goes on the side, which was $4. I kept asking the lady of that was the right price and size. She confirmed that was the only one they had. So when I got there it wasn't the one for $4, it was really $9. And then they thought I ordered an extra piece of grilled chicken. No I didn't, just the chicken that comes in the CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP. So again I made sure that I wasn't ordering extra chicken. Oh and by the time I got there it still wasn't ready so I went next door. When I came back for my order, I look in the bag and of course it's a size I wasn't expecting. The last straw for me was when I added my tortilla strips and cheese and the strips are hard and STALE ASF. I really wanted to give this location a chance but I won't ever be coming here again. Thee worst... Shrimp ceviche had very little shrimp in it... if you did find one, texture was firm and dry inside. Salsa... according to the waitress, she would check with the cooks but they were very low on salsa (probably because they stuffed the ceviche with it) Sunday brunch items... Chicken over spinach? Breakfast sausages? Not enough Mexican food items to pick from. Champagne... was very heavy on the alcohol taste, not enjoyable but it gets you buzzed... then again, so does a Four Loco without the food disappointment. Service... My waitress didn't offer chips, salsa, water, napkins. She came around only to refill the champagne, so I guess thats where the star can go. This was my first and last time here. I have been coming to this restaurant for many years, over 20 years, but I am pretty sure today is my last visit. I have experienced the gradual decline in customer service but today was just exceptionally bad. I was told 25 minute wait, and we waited for over an hour. We have young children and when you tell a person a wait time, you need to be reasonable and somewhat accurate. At the 50 minute mark of our wait, I entered the restaurant and there were lots of people frustrated at the front desk and nobody in the staff seemed to care. I stood waiting for over 10 minutes without anyone coming to the front desk to address mine or anyone else's concern. I'd rather drive the extra 5-10minutes north or south to another torito. Like I wrote initially, I've been coming here for over 20 years, but never experienced such unsatisfactory customer service. And when I called for some help, they placed me on hold for over 10 minutes and then hung up on me when i tried to talk to the manager! Incredible! read more

I'm not sure if it was because my husband and I decided to go on a Saturday night or the fact that they were understaffed but we had a bad experience here. I have been to El Torito before but the experience wasn't like this. My husband and I were expected to be seated but we're told to hold on for second while another seated customer was taken care of. Ok that was fine. But then another couple walked in and a different greeter approached and they were seated. Seeing that we were first we decided to speak up. We were seated. We decided to order a Cadillac margarita, buffalo wings and all you can eat mahi mahi tacos. Our waiter Edwardo was awesome. He even realized that it took forever for our food to arrive and kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. He brought us water when he seen that we finished our margarita and we didn't even have to ask!! He was very attentive. We ate three baskets full of chips and salsa and our drink before the food arrived. We were a little too full of all the chips we ate to really enjoy our meal. When the food arrived I'm assuming this lady who was part of management walked up to our table and told us who would be waiting on us seeing that Edwardo was off duty. You would never believe this...The waiter was the very one who had us waiting to be seated. At the point I just wanted to leave. I had a very bad experience. My husband had regrets he had brought me. The parking wasn't a problem, as it is shared with other stores. The music and entertainment was awesome in the restaurant but the staff and their service needs some serious improvement. read more

I enjoy El Torito in Hayward marina but the location in Hawthorne is unbearable. Filthy restrooms. Had to ask server for silverware, napkins, refills. Server seemed agitated to explain the options and was always in a rush to walk away. Sunday night but no game in the bar. Overall atmosphere is uninviting. Food was great. read more
